edzealously-ontheCarolinamissionsforsevenyears. Ill-health thenforcedhimtoreturntoIrelandin1829,hutthewoesofhis fellow-CatholicsinAustraliaappealedsoforcefullytohimthathevolunteeredtogotothepenalcolony andarrivedinSydneyin1832.Untilhisdeath,onAugust22,1868, hewastheleadingiigureinNew SouthWales,andoneofthemost influentialpromotersoftheprogress oftheChurchinAustralasia. SoeagerwasbetoassisttheCatholicsattheconvictstationthat helandedatSydneyonNovember 14,1817,withouthavingreceivedthe officialsanctionoftheBritishgovernmentforhismission.Thegovernorofthecolor*,oneMacquaire, outofhatredforCatholics,ordered himtoleave,andonthepretext thatFatherFlynnhadenteredthe Colonywithoutpermission,arrested. himanddeportedhimbacktoEngland.

DuringthebriefperiodFather FlynnwasinSydneyhelivedin thehouseofanIrishmannamedWilliamDavis,whohadbeentransportedformakingpikesfortheinsurgentsof1798.HesaidMassinthe house,usingalittlecedarcabinetas atabernacle,inwhichtheBlessed. Sacramentwasreserved.Whenhe wasarrestedtheofficialswouldnot lethimreturntothishouse,and therethePyxwiththeBlessedSacramentremainedenshrinedguarded bythepiousDavisfamilyfortwo years,untilthenextpriestcame intothecolony.Davislatergave thehouseandgardenaboutitfor thesiteonwhichSt.Patrick's churchinSydney,nowstands.He wastwicefloggedandthenimprisonedforrefusingtoattendProtestantservices.

He hopedtheywerenotundulygrateful fromthebenefitsthatdissociated fromthegloriesoftheEmpire,but hethoughtpatriotism,likecharity,began'athome,andtheirchildrenshouldbetaughttolovethe countryoftheirbirth,whichwas theessentialideaofpatriotism.The BritishEmpireLeagueendeavoured toturntheirlovetowardsEngland, andtoinstilinthemanadmiration ofherpolicy.Hedidnotsayan AustralianDa.\shouldbedisassociatedfromthegloriesoftheEmpire, butitmustbeprimarilyAustralian. HethoughtitwouldbewellifMay 21,theFeastofOurLadyHelpof Christians,wasinfutureknownas AustralianDayintheCatholic schools,andcelebratedassuch.It wouldgiveafilliptothepatriotism oftheirwork.Suchacelebration wouldheamagnificentanswerto thecaltiminatorswhotauntedthem forwantofPublicspirit,isolation ofPolicy,andwantofpatriotism. ThelateArchbishop Vaughan,in1879,withBishops Quinn,Lanigan,andMurray,issued aPastoralwhichvoicedtheposition ofCatholicsinregardtoCatholic education.Theclaimsmadethen havebeenstrengthenedbymany earsofprotestation.WiththeunitedeflortsoftheBishopsand priests,teachersandlait\thework ofCatholiceducationhe,4increased everyyearinamarkedwa., In thedioceseofMaitlandineducationalmatters,theywereonewiththe Cardinalinallthathedid.They hadstrivenwithmuchsuccessinthe Maitlanddiocesetoconsolidatethe workofCatholiceducation. ThisIstrulyanhistoricoccasion. Itcelebratesthelargestdonationevermadetoreligionoreducationor charity,byaoyonepersonorfamily,sincethefoundationof the diocese.Itcreatesafocusofsweetnessandlight,whoserayswillnot beconfinedtothenarrowcircleof ourvisiblehorizon,butspreadfor milesround.Itmayperhapslea ontotheclosersettlementofthis fertiledistrict,totheestablishment ofcomfortableandhappyandvirtuoushomes,onthosepicturesquehillsidesandsmilingvalleysthatsurroundusoneveryside.Maythe consecratedinmatesofthisbeautiful convent,andthechildrenwhowill beentrustedtotheircareinthis school,andthefaithfulpeoplewho yearinandyearout,willassemble toPrayinthismostdevotionaland restfullittleChurch,neverforget whattheinscriptiononthefoundation-stonerequestsofthem-topray forMichaelandEdmundandLawrenceandAnastasiaRyan. ThenextspeakerintroducedbytheBishopwastheHon.HughMahon,M.H.R.Hecongratulatedthe Bishopandtheparishonthefine provisionmadeforreligionandeducationthroughthemunificence of MissRyan.Oneremarkwadeby hisLordshiphadsethimreflecting. ThiswasInreferencetotheintolerantsection,which,iftheydared wouldcloseCatholicschoolsaltogether.Hethoughtsuchpeoplewere anegligiblequantityInthiscommunity,andtheehadlittleinfluence now,andlateronwouldbo.1-fortheywerecontinuallydiminish-

inginnumbers,andthefreeairwas unfavourabletosuchapernicious growth.Butifthetimeeverdid comeforanattempttopreventthe impartingofareligiouseducationto Catholicyouth,hewasconfident theywouldmeetitasdidtheir Irishforefathers.Personally,he didnotthinktheexistingstateof affairsregardingpubliceducation couldlongcontinue,andinvolving, asitdid,averyrealinjusticeto theCatholiccommunity,itdidnot deservetocontinue.Catholicsnumberedsome22Percent.ofthepopulationofAustralia.andpaidthat shareofitstotaltaxation, from whichthecostoreducation was taken.BeingunableconscientiouslytousePublicschools,theywere obligedtomaintaintheirown, by, whichtheyrelievedtheState of considerableexpenditure.Itwould onlybeanactofcommonjustice tocompensateCatholicsforthispublicservice.TheendsoftheState wereservedwhenthefuturecitizens wereeducateduPtoacertainstandard.Itdidnotmatterto the Statewhereorbywhomtheeducationwhichitenforcedonitsyouth wasgivem.TheStategotfromCatholicschoolswhatitrequiredofse culareducation,anditwasclearly inequitabletorefusetorecognise theirwork.Hewasconvincedthat thepeopleofAustraliaonlyneeded aclearcomPrehensionoftheCatholicPositiontoinducethemtodoit justice,forinthemassAustralians werebroadmindedandgenerousand lovedfairplaytoowelltolongremainresponsibleforthehardships imposedontheirCatholicfellow-citizens.
