Oursisaweanlinechildstruggling forexistencethatmusthedeniedit bythattruestofallcritics-the yearstocome.Wearegoingthe wrongwayaboutgivingexistenceto agreatschoolofAustralianpoetr; thosewhowouldfosteritseemto forgettheoldLatinadage"That poetsarehorn,notmade." We haveanexampleofthisinthe verseturnedoutweeklyfromthe SedillyTempleoftheMusesandlabelled"AustralianPoetry."This schoolofpoetryhasdonelittleto advancetheliteraryreputationof ouryoungland.Itursurpsthe rightofOmnipotencetosupercede Natureherselfinoneofherdivinestofficesbyendeavouringto mouldaclassofpoetstoitsown standardorstyleandsubject.Poetryisnottobecircumscribedor limitedanymorethanthesoaring oftheskylark,orthesongofthe nightingale.Itcannotmoulda writertotheirBrowning,orSwin-

burnestandards,ithasbeenattemptedandwhathavewehad? IfaschoolofPoetryistohe foundedonthesteleofanyparticularPoet,whynotontheworks ofourgreatmasters?Whynoton thesublimityofMilton,orthe grandeurofKeats,orthesound senseofShakespeare,andthepassionateandsensuousworkofByron?Thereis,inmyopinionnothinggreatineitherBrowningor Swinburne,thatentitlesthemtohe themodelsafterwhichtoformour Poetry,withtheexceptionofthe latter'ssongsofsimplechildhood, whatisthereworthconsidering, andafterthirtyyearsofemulation whathastheBulletinschoolevolved? Ouranswermustbenothingabovethemediocrityofmere "Jingle."
