sessionofaCollegethatfromthe viewpointofeducationalequipment, cancomparemorethanfavourably withmostofthelongerestablished collegesofthemainland,andthat inregardtoconsiderationsof health,climate,etc.,willfarsurpassthemallforthereisnota moreprettilysituatedcollegein Australia,norone,ofcourse,ina healthierclimate.

WehavedrawnlargelyfromMendel'sPaper,becauseitundoubtedly containsthebestaccountof"Mendelism,"initssimplestform.The scientificprecisionofthepapercannotbesurpassed.Nosignificantdetailsoftheexperimentsareomitted;thefactsandfiguresarefirst clearlystated,andasimplehypothesisisproposed,fullyaccounting fortheobservedphenomena.Finallyinamatterwheretheunanimity,ofthe'resultsmighthave temptedotherstogeneralise-witnessDarwinforinstance-hisremarksarestrictlyconfinedtothe Particulargenusofplantsinvolved.

Togainsomeideaofthetheory ofnaturalselectiononemustbecomeacquaintedwiththeMalthusian doctrinethatpopulationtendsto increasebeyondthemeansofsubsistence,whichinturnsupposesa struggleforfood,ormoreproperly thestruggleforexistence.Batnaturalselectionisonlyoneofthefactorsinthetheoryofevolutionand againitmaybeclaimedtobethe sumtotalofmanyotherfactors suchassexualselection.Thetheory ofuseanddisuseofanorganand ofgerminalselectionsandthetransmissionofacquiredcharacters,all ofwhichareessentialauxiliariesin theideaofdevelopmentandthe sumtotalisnaturalselectionor thesurvivalofthefit.Itiseasyto seehowmaninthecreativekingdommayselectbyactinguponthe Principlesofvaribilityinnature. bothwithanimalsandplants,such asBurbarkachievedinthevegetablekingdom.Butinnaturalselectiontheselectoriswantedoris absent.Asasubsituteforthisselector,Mr.Darwinintroducedthe Principleofsexualselection. The merepresenceofsexincreationwas asufficientselectiveagent,according toDarwin.Bythismeansthebirds receivedtheirplumageandsong notes,etc.Itwasapparentthat someselectiveagenthadtobeem. Playedinoppositiontohumanselection,soastonecomparedwith itbecausewheneveranincipientvarietyappearednothingcouldprevent itbeingsmothereebyacrossfrom Aitsowntype.Theideaofsexualselectionwastoallowtheacquiredcharactertobeperpetuated.We shallsoonseethatNaturalseinedonisnotaselectionagentatall, andthisisbestdonebycomparison withHerbertSpencer'ssurvivalof thefit,whichisitssynonymous termunderanothername. The useofthetermNaturalSelection Ainthisrespectismerelyan expressedofinanityusedbyevolutionistsali'u',itsupposesasomethinginthenatureofananimaland plant,havingthediscernmentofa qualityandofbeautyequaltothat ofthehumanfaculty.Thesameas thatwhichBurbankachievedinthe vegetablekingdomandthesameas stock-breedersdowiththeirstock. Inselectingbeautybytheexercise ofafemininechoiceofthemost handsomemalesDarwincouldnot haveknownam-thingofthebeauty' inthemicroscopicworldorthatthe colourofbutterflieswasduetoseasonaldiamorphism,bywhich one ofthesametypeveouldbedifferent whenhorninspring,thanwhenborn inthesummer. Moreoverthe thoughtdidnotoccurtohimthat hissexualselectioncouldrotbe appliedtotheearliestspontaneous formsbecausenosexexisted,otherwisetheoriginalformswereoforiginallyorganicfunctionsunlessthis weresothetheoryofuseanddisuseofanorgancouldnotbeappliedeithersothatanorgancould notheaccertuatedwhichdidnot exist.Neithercouldanyacquired characterbetransmittedtooffspring without,someorganiccontrivanceof transmission.Hereweendallthe Principalfactorsinthetheory of

kind

evolutionalllamentableabsentand canonlybeaPPliedtoacreative Hypothesis.Afterall,itisthesame storyoffmaninthegardenwithfictitiousandinefficientagentstaking hisplace. NowwecometotheMalthusian lawwhichitsauthordidnotwhollyunderstandandwhichhasbeen verywronglyappliedandequally misunderstoodbyevolutionists.This lawalwaysassumesafamineas prevalentamongthespeciesaswell asitassumesthattheanimalsacquiredtheirenemityandweapons foroffenceanddefenceconsequenton thekeensearchforfood.Bya simplecalculationthelowestbranchesintheanimalkingdomwould soonoverruntheearth.Butthat theyhadnotdonesoisoneofthe factstooapparenttobeignored. HenryGeorgeclearlyshowedthatas farascivilisedcommunitieswere concerned,productionkeptpacewith thebirthrateandthatMalthuswas mistakeninhisarithmeticalproportion,andthattheincreasewasin Geometricalratio.Malthusalso assumedcertainchecksontheincreaseintheanimalkingdom.This culminatedinthestruggleforlife. Hencealltheanimalkingdombegan toputonarmourandallwereat enmitywitheachother,someescapeddeathorextinctionbyreasonof theirbetterequipment,othersby theirfleetness,othersbyflying,othersbytheirarborealproclivities, andsoon,everythingbegantochose everyotherthing.Itseemsunfortunatethatthisenmityhadbeenprecipitatedthroughfaminebecausepovertyinnature,wouldbegetapovertofoffspring.Theyoungcould notbesuckledorfedenough.Hence ageneraldegeneracywouldsetin andnaturewouldbecontinuallyselectingtheweeds,whichinturn wouldbecrosseditherobustonly tore-actwhenthefamineappeared againbesides,thiseffect,ofwhich thereisampleevider.ce,thefamine itself the wellashungerwoulddevelopacannibalistictendencyforanimalsto devourtheirownkind,inwhichthe bestandworstwouldperishafike, andthereisthecheckwhichmanwouldhavealwaysappliedtowardstheincreaseaslongas he wasincreation.Thischeckbynean issowellknowntoevolutionists, thatitwouldnotdotohavehim increationuntiltheverylastbecausehewouldalwayscheckthe spreadoftheotherstoagreatextentwhichwouldprovehiscontemporareitywiththerestoftheanimalkingdom,aswellasitwouli notallowofthepossibilityofputringonanynaturalarmourbyevolutingmethodstobeginthestruggleortheenmitywiththevery earliestspontaneousevolutionary forms,oneispuzzledasto why thisshouldspringupheresincethey hadtheworldtothemselves.They hadnoenemiesandthenumber mustbeverylimited,aswellasthe worldbeverylargeforthem',surelytherecouldbenofaminehere.
