himselfacquaintedwithHomerand Virgil;

Afterfinallyleavingschool,Dickensobtainedapositionasreporter onthestaffofthe"DailyChronicle,"atwhichpostheworked'assiduouslyforseveralyears.Inhis twenty-firstyear(I835),,hepublishedhisfirst°book,"Sketchesby' .1aArio ,,xog. Twist,"andin1838"Nicholas Nickleby." BythistimerDickens hadearnedforhimselfanameof greatrenown.About1840hevisitedAmerica,anddidnotformvery goodimpressionsofthatcountry, muchtothedisappointmentofthe inhabitants.

Thetwochiefworks,theresultof thisvisit,were"AtriericaniNotes," and"MartinChnzzlewit."

Dickensspentmanyyearson Continentwherehewroteseveralc hisworks.Mr.O'LoughlindescrledalltheprincipleworksofDickens,illustratingthedifferentcharacters,andexplainedthesource whenceeachwerederived.
