TheWaterfordcorrespondent of theI'ilfn"Freeman,"writingon the2:thoflastmonth,says:-Todayinpursuanceofdecreesfor arfetionoetainedatthelastKilmacowtettySessions,aforceof17o Police,accompaniedaysixbailiffs, ProceededtotheNewmanEstate, Aglish,Co.Kilkenny,aboutfour milsou',toputtheminforce.The policy,whowereinchargeofCountyInspectorHeard,'Kilkenny,and DistrictinspectorsSmith,Flemming andlieggartwereobligedtomarch out,anddidnotreachAglishvillageLailIIo'clock.Longbefore thathourthetollingofMooncoin Chapelbellhadattractedalarge crowdtothescene,andtheapproachofthepoliceandbailiffs washeraldedbyderisivecheersand hoofingofthebailie's,thelatterapparentlybeingknowntothepeople. AtadinnergivenbytheEighty Clubinhishonour,Mr.Birrellsum'mineuphispositionasIrishChief Secretarysaid,interalia:-"He mishtbecalledtheIrishHomeSecretary,responsibleforlawandorder,andhewasboundtosayfor everyothercrimeinIrelandfrom whatevermotive(laughter). He wasresponsibleinIrelandforthe administrationoftheworkhouses, foroldAgepensions,fortheBoard ofAgricultureandTechnicalEducation,andmaneotherthings.Would theytelieeeit-itwasshockingthatnotonedayhadbeengiven forthedismissionofhissalary (laughter).WhatIrelandwasentitledtodemandfromanyParliament,thatdesiredtoexerciseadministrationandlegislativecontrol

overitwasnotoneday,oneweek, oronemonth'sdiscussion,butyears ofconstantstudyandwork,andthe overhaulingofallthesebodiesand institutions,injuryandexamination intothePoorlawsandallthelams andlegislationnotinaccordance withEnglishnotionsoftheEnglish economicfacts,butinaccordance withIrisheconomicsfacts(cheers). TiedidnotgrudgetheIrishmen theiroldagepensions,butheknew ifIrelandhadbeenaself-governing countryandresponsibleforitsown financialaffairs,afarwider,far better,andfarmoreeconomical, sensible,andjustarrangement wouldundoubtedlyhavebeenmade. Whatwastrueinoldagepensions wastrueinpoorlawandinother matters.TodrawIrelandin the wakeofEnglandwassheerdownrightstupidfolly(cheers). Scotlandhadbeeninrevolt,andWales wasseethingwithdiscontent,and Englandhadanoverwhelmingcase forrevoltherself.Asthingsstood shedidjusticetonoone,noteven toherself. Thetrueimperialism thatcommonsenseandjusticedictatedwasthatthereshouldbetime tocarryoutworkineachcountry andineachpartoftheDominions, inaccordancewithitstraditions, anditsownwishes(cheers)."

Speakingatademonstration of LiberalsoftheCrewDivision,England,Mr.StephenGwynne,M.P., IrishNationalist,declaringthedemandsoftheIrishPartysaidThey didnotaskforHomeRulebecause itwasgoodfor-othercountries. HomeRulewasthegoverningprincipleoftheBritishEmpire.They hadgivenHomeRuleeverywhere butinIreland,andeverywherewith success.'TheirgovernmentofIrelandwasadisgraceandashame totheBritishGovernmentto-day. Somepeoplesaidthatiftheygave IrelandHomeRuletheCatholics wouldoppresstheProtestants.He wasaProtestanthimself,andthere werenearlyalwaystenoradozen ProtestantsintheIrishParty.Did theethinktheewouldadvocatea measurethatwouldcauseoppressivetyrannytotheirbrethren? TheyadvocateditbecausetheybelievedthatProtestantswouldhave asmuchfairplayasCatholics.It wasadisgracethatinthegreat citiesofBelfastandDerry,where theProtestantshaditalltheirown way,thatnoofficeshouldhegiven toCatholics.IntherestofIrelandtheyfoundCatholicsandProtestantshonouredandtrustedand inmanycasessomeofthemost prosperousshopswereowned by ProtestentsinCatholiccommunities, andCatholicsweretheirhestcustomers. Anyonewhosaidthat Protestantswouldnotgetfairplay inIrelandwasstating-whatcould nothejustifiedinfact.IfIreland wereProtestantinsteadofCatholicitwouldhaveHomeRuletomorrow.Theobjectiontoitrested uponabigotryandprejudicethat itwasnotcreditabletoEngland. OnlastWednesdaynightthefirst ofaseriesofOrganRecitalswas givenintheCathedralbyMr.Taylor,assistedby'theleadingsolotits ofthecity.Fromeverypointof viewthe'effortwasabrilliantsuccess.Despitetheinclemency of theweath-r,theCathedralseating accommodationwasseverelytaxed, andnumeerswerecompelledtostand intheporchesthroughouttheentireperfermance,yetsoraptwere theybetheexcellentmusicthateven they,feltloathetoleavewhenthe lastitemontheprogrammehad he'nrendered.Thisspeakswellfor theneworganist,andtheselections henutfor'h,aswellasforhis highlyefficientrenditionofthem.It isalsoastrieingtestimonytothe superiorityofthemusicwhichis renthredintheCatholicChurch. Theidae,thesentiments,andthe wordsedithevesettomusicfor recitaleeforetheGodoftheTaberminearethemostsublimecorn position.everwritten,andthemu-

Initselftheorganembracesahost ofmusicalinstruments-itisanorchestra,itisevenmore,becauseit canhemadetoimitatethehuman voice,.(andinthebeautifulorgan atpresentinstalledintheCathedral,ithasastopcalledthe(vox Humana),thehumanvoice),even toanicety,andyetall Mend,underthetouchofthecapableoreanistintothemostpleasing harmony.IfwetakethecompositionoftheChurch-whosechiefmusicalinstrumenttheorganis,we findthatthoughitismadeup of hundredsoftrillionsofmen-each onediflerentfromtheother,each havinghisownnaturalkeynote, andsound,hisownopinion,hisown voiceoneverysubjectunderthe sun,yetwhentheyallmeettogethesastheydo,whentheyassembleforMassorforeveningdevotion andwhen theMasterHand ofDivineFaithsweepsoverthem, forthfromthemanifoldelements thatcomposethecrowd,comesone voiceofpraise,onevoiceandone noteoffaith,allbelievingthegame truths,alladoringthesameGod,all expressingthesamefaithandlove, eachoneaddingtothestrengthand sweetnessofthatmelodybythe contributionofallthatisbestin him,ofmindandheart,inthe nameof,andforthegloreofGod. DivineFaith,itis,therefore,that makesthemysticbody-of('hriettheChurch,andtheorganwhichis theembodimentofsomane-dissimilarunits,solikeintheperfect harmonywhicheachrenderstoGod, intheevereiseofHispraise. Itmaybesaidthattheorganis usedequally,bytheothervarious sectsanddenominationsas:wellas bytheCatholicChurch.Weadmit it,butwhodoesnotseetheinincongruity Unlessthemusicof theCatholicChurchisrendered,the organismerely"adraw,"andif theCatholicChurchmusicisrendered,thenitonlyprovesthatshe isthemistressandpatroness of musicandtheonlyonethatknows howtoimprintanddeveloptheDivinestofthoughtsonourlimitedhumanintelligences.TheCatholicChurchcontrolsthemindand heartofman,justasdidHerDivineFounder.Shewascreatedfor us-FOROURMINDStogive us alltheknowledgeofGod,togiveit initspurity',togiveitinallits integrity,togiveitandproclaim itinallthestrengthandmajesty ofitspower.ButtheChurchalso endsherwayintoTHEHUMAN HEART.Itisnotenoughtosay webelieveintellectually,-wemust openourheartstoherinfluenceand allowthemtoheswayedtewards theLordourGod.AndifweexcepttheSacraments,andprayer, themoststrikingandPenetrating meanswhichtheChurchutilisesfor reachingtheheartofman-isher music.Afterthesupernaturalthe mostpowerfulmeansofreachingthe humanheart,arethesplendourof herliturgy,thegrandeurofher song,andtheresonantaccompanimentofheror'anicmusic.Truly, wewouldbelieourmiture,we wouldnotunderstandourselves,if wedidnotadmithowlargelythe heartendeniritofmenisswayed, touchedandinfluencedforgoodor evilh.%music.Whodoesnotre-

For prayerisanactiveelementinthe religionseconomyoftheworli, whateverformreligionmayassume. Someofthemodernpiloaophers wouldmakeofprayerasort of safety-valvebywhichthefeelingsof theheartmaybepouredout.They toleratePrayerontheprincipleon whichsomemotherssendtheirchildrentoSundayschool-becausealthough,ofcourse,religionisonlyis "fancy"itdoesthelittleones good,itkeepsthemtogetherand teachesthemtoIseneatandtidy."

EventhisadmissionofPrayeras somethingworthretaininginsome sense,orforsomePurpose,isbut aLeslieechoofthevoiceofhumanitycomingdowntousthroughall time.Itisawantofournature andtherefore,itisacravingthat comesoutsPontaneouslyfromthe soul.Itisinborninuslikereligion,withwhichitisinseparably boundup. Religionmayappear, andhesappeared,underditlerent forms,trueandfalse,buttherehas neverbeenareligioninwhichprayer somekindhasnotbeengiven animportantPlaceandadmittedas anessen-ialelement.

Therearedoctrines,whichreject prayeruponthepleathatitisincompatiblewiththeunchangeablenese,knowledgeandgoodnessof Godononehand,andwiththesystemoflawsdevisedbyHimforthe governmentoftheworldonthe other. "Dowhateverwecan," saysJulesSimon,"itisimpossibletotakeawayfromGodHisimmuta'ilityandeternity.Prayers bringsusnotothereoodthanto drawusnearertoGod,bymediationendlove."Moreover,theyask isnotGodall-seeinganddoesHe

notknowourdesiresandneeds?Is Henotinfinitelygood,andwillHe not,knowingthem,satisfytheone ifitbegoodforus,andprovide fortheothersiftheybereal'ButI thetheory'ofPrayerimplieseither thatGodmaynotknow,orthat knowingthem,Hisgoodnessmay notbeabletograntthemwithout ourinformingHim.Thesearesome ofthethingsthatareallegedagainsttheusefulnessofprayer.

Inthefirstinstanceprayerfinds itsopponentinacertainclasset physicistswhoareremarkablefor arrogatingtothemselvesamonopolyofknowledgeinphysicalmatters asifnobodyelseknewanything aboutthem.Thenthereisacertainschoolofpsychologists who maintainthatmentalphenomenaare underlawsasfixedasthosethat governthephysicalworld and hencethatitisnolessirrational toprayforgraceoragainsttemptationthanforfineweatheroragainstaplague.Athirdschoolholds thatpeoples,nolessthanindividuals,areguidedendgovernedbyan inflexiblelaw. Itisuponthis theorythatthePhilosophyof historyisbeingtaughtinmanyplaces to-day.

Catholicdoctrinelooksatprayer fromtherationalstandpointofour relationshipwithGod.Whenanythinghappensastheresultofprayeritdoesnotmeanthatthenand thereGodhasbeeninfluencedand Hiswillchanged,butthatHehad willedfromalleternitythatwhat happensshouldhappenthen, and happenthroughPrayer. Noris PrayerofferedasaremindertoGod ofourneeds,asthoughtheycould heun"nowntoHim,butasthefulfilmentofaParticularlawdecreed byGod.Godhaselvenusmany thingswithoutaskingforthem. ButitisforourgoodthatHerequiresustoaskforsomethings forwethusacquireaconfidencein Him,andatthesametimeacknowled-eHimastheAuthorofeverythingwehave.

Moreover,althoughphysicalsciencehasmadeusacquaintedwith thelawsofnaturetoasurprising extent,neverthelessallofthelaws ofnaturearenotknownandnever, canbeknownbyus.There are manywhichweknow,while wo donotknowtheirfullvalue.There areathousandcomplicationsand circumstancesthatinfluencetheactionofforcesononeanother of whichweareyetignorant but theyareallwithinGod'sknowledge andunderHispower.Whatright, then,hasanyonetosaythatGod cannot,inthisorthatinstance,in answertoprayer,interferewith causesandcircumstanceswhichdo notappeartous?

Oncethereasonablenessofprayer isestablished,whenitisknownto beaninfluenceincludedintheProvidenceofGod,allobjectionsmanufacturedoftestcasesareworthlittleornothing.Thecommandment ofprayerhavingbeengivenbyGod sinceitcannotconflictwiththeom niscienceandunchangeablenessof God,orwiththelawsofnatureas theyareinthedivineMind,itfollowsthatprayerpossessesallthe zoodandsavingqualitiesattributed toit.

TheParis"Universe,"ofJuly 6thcontainstheaccountof Elbe miraclesregisteredrecentlyatLourdes.ThefirstoneisthatofMadameDeniauxofSt.Sauveur,Brest agedfifty-fyeyears.Shehadbeena suffererformorethantenyears fromulcerousvaricoseveinsinher leg.Onherarrivallastyearat Lourdeswiththepilgrimagefrom Quimpershehadthreelargewounds in' herleg.Madametookthree bathsinthepiscineandappliedthe waterfromthegrottoasacompresstothewounds.Fromthe firstimmersionthewoundscommen-

ced to heal,andonthethirdday theywerecompletelyhealed.From thatmomentthecurehascontinued,thesufferingsceased,andthe ladyhasbeenabletocontinueher usualoccupation.Theulcersdisappearedcompletelyandsothisyear MadameDeniauxreturnedtoLourdes to havehercureconfirmedand registered.Thesecondcureisthat ofMademoiselleMarieleCozannet, agedthirty-threeyears.Shewent toLourdesin19o7sufferingfrom diseaseofherrightlung.From thetimeshebathedinthepiscineon the18thofAugust,1907,shebecamebetter,andbythetimeofthe departureoftheNationalFrench Pilgrimage,onwhichshehadcome, thesvmptomsofthediseasehad nearlydisappeared.Thisyearthe lunesonbeingexaminedshowedno signofdisease,andthecurehas beenregisteredandconfirmed. Anothercureof1909hasalsorecentlybeenregisteredandconfirmed thatofMdlle.HeleneJeanneMarie BernarddeItuceyeles-Gey,Haute saone,agednineteenyears. She hasbeencuredofpulmonaryphthisis,andreturnedtoLourdesonthe firstFridayofthismonth,July1, 1910,foravisitofthanksgiving, andtoPresentherselfattheOfficial Bureauwithacertificatefromher doctor.

TheCarlowGuardiansandDistrictCouncilhasunanimouslyadoptedaresolutionconveyingtheircongratulationstotheMostRev.Dr. FoleyonhisreturntoCarlowin restoredhealth,andexpressing a hopethathemaylongbesparedto ruleovertheDiocese.

Someweekssincealectureon thissubjectwasdeliveredatthe PerthLiteraryinstitute,byMr.CecilAndrews,oftheEducationDepartment.ThelecturerdidnotdisguisethefactthatMendelwasa Catholic,and(tellitnotinGath!) aFriar-oneofthoselazy,ignorantmaths.forsooth!thelastman indeed,fromwhomProtestantism andculture(aretheynotidentical terms?)couldexpectscientificenlightenment.Initsreportofthe lecture,ourgreatmorningjournal, whichpublisheda`discussionunder theheading"CardinalMoranand McCabe,"(whydiditnotgotone betterandcallit"ThePopeand thePedlar?")wasabsolutelysilent astothepersonalityofMendel,a manwhosecontributionstogenuine science,thoughlongr.eglectedani almostforgotten,arenowregarded asthemostvaluableofthegreat scientificcenturyofourera.Bateson,ProfessorofBiologyinthe UnivirsityofCambridgeisthegreat admirerandexponentofMendelism, intacthehasconsecratedhislife tothepropagationofMendel'sprinciplesofilereditry,andhaspublishedseveralableworksonthesubject.
