Physicalconditionof thechildren attendingthe State sohoolsinNewSouthWales,has beencirculated.Itisbasedupon observationsmadeinconnectionwith themedicalinspectionofthepub- licschoolchildrenin19o8 and 1909.Thereportstatesthat48 schoolsinthemetropolitan and Newcastledistrictswerevisitedfor thePurposesofmedicalinspection. Ofatotalenrolmentof66,000 14,380,or21.7percent.,were Presentedformedicalexamination. Nofewerthan57percent. were foundtohavedefectivevision,49 Percent,throattroubles.

AstheresultofinquiriesbyDetectiveSullivanandConstablesMallonandGrey,ithasbeenascertainedthatagirl,13yearsofage, wasresponsibleforthemischevious actattheCatholicChurchatTarrawingee,whenitwasfoundthat thevestrydoorhadbeenforcedopen,andthevestmentsmutilated. Therehadbeeninterference,nlen withthetaberna-leSuspicionatthetaeliedtothegirl,andsheultima-

InhisealydaysthelateMr.J. C.Harrington,Nationalist, wasateacherinHolycrossSeminary,Tralse.Duringtheseventies thetenantfarmersofKerryresistedtheexactionsofthelandlords, andthyhadasoneofth-irtrusted1-aderetheyoungprotessOrof Holecroes.Tobetteradvocatetheir cause estedisarelthe"Kerry Sentinel,"whichsubsequentlybecameaPowerfulNationalistforce intheOro:inces.Hewasthenin histwenties.

HarringtonorganisedKerry so thoroughlythattherewasnot a districtinthatcountywhichhad notgotitsbranchoftheLeague Whenheresignedhisappointment onthestaffatHolyCrossSermt arehieplacewastakenby his brother,thelateMr.EdwardHat rington,agiftedmanandfearless. Themonasteryisaverysubstantialbuildingandanexcellent specimenofSpanisharchitecture. Thewallsareabouttwofeetin thickness,andthebeamsofthe roofaresolidtrees,onlylevelledoff wherenecessary.Someoftheseare considerablyoverafootindiameter.Improvementsare,howevercontinuallygoingon,anditwillonly beamatterofafewmonthswhen thesebeamswillbehiddenbymetal ceiling.Mostoftherooms have alreadytheseceilingsandtheyare beingfurtherelaboratedbytheartisticdesignsofalaybrotherwho isagifteddecorator.ThisBrother doesallthepaintinganddecorating inthemonastery,Convent and Churchandhisdesignsarecharming.TheOratoryisasplendidexampleofhisworkmanshipandhe isnowengageddecoratingtheOratoryintheGirls'College.ThealtarintheChurchisbeautifuland iscoveredwithgoldleaftothe valeofovera£IoobutthealtarintheGirls'CollegeOratoryis themoststriking.Itisamagnincentpieceofwore,excellentlycarvedandthecrossontopofitreachestotheceiling.Thenativeboys' homeisoneoftheearlybuildings ofthemission.Onentering the schoolroomattachedtothishome oneseestheyoungnativessitting totheirdesksalongthesideofthe wall;andwhatasightitis,everyoneofthemturningroundto acknowledgethevisitwith a broadsmile.Intheevenings,Gramaphoneconcertsaregiven,the GramaPhonebeingworkedbe one oftheeldernatives,whoisvery fondofmusic.Theyoungnatives dancetothetunes,andtheykeep splendidtime.Withalittletrainingtheseyoungsterswouldmakeexpertdancers.

IntheRefectory,the"Coat of 'Arms,"ofthemissioniscarvedon thebackoftheAbbot'schair,and thisisafinepieceofworkmanship. Thewalkthroughthegardenisdelightfulandonenoticestheirrigationschemeinfullworkingorder. itisaveryprimitive,butnonethe lesseffectivemethodofraisingwater,thattheyhaveinuse.ibelieve itisthesameasisusedinIndia.Alongpoleisplacedinthe "fork,"ofa'treeandtothethin endofthisaverylongsaplingis suspended.Ontotheotherend ofthesaplingabucketisfixed. Thethickendofthepoleis"weighted,"soaswhenabucketisfullof wateritwillpractically-come up ofitsownaccord.Thisisemptied intoalargehollowlogandfront thereitTellsintovariousother channelsandthus\voteralarge areafromthesamewell.
