Nodoubt,gentlemen,thewording oftheaboveheadingwillnotacsuratelyconveythemeaningaimed at,astheterm"revival,"certainly Impliesalooseofcontinuity.To tierevivedaPastime,oranything sloeforthatmatter,must be broughtbeforethepublicview-not Weavision,butasarealityiit mustnotbemerely'spokenof,but PutintoPractice.

Certainlywemustaccedetoth firstportionofthequestioninfact wehavehereatleast,toomanyof them,andconsequentlycannotde votesufficienttoany'oneinpar ticular.Ashasbeenlatelypointed outbyoneofourleadingluminaries,sportreceives5opercenttoo muchattentiononthese'Fields.We cannotagreetothatremark,which becomesmoreinaccordwithour viewofitwhenitisadded,with truth,thatthemajorityofsport indulerdinhere,shouldnotbetolerated.

Weareoftensurprisedatthenowcommonliteremarkthat"Sport InAust..liaisdead,"andnotonly surprisedbutastonishedthat,inthe moo-ityofcases,sucharemark shouldemanatefrom,'thosewhohave themeansandopportunityattheir dietoialofreversingthisdeplorable stateofaffairs.

"Theyouthofto-dayarethemen ofto-morrow,"andiftheyouth, then,areaffordedthemeansofbeingimbuedwiththetruespiritof cleansport,surelythenitfollows, asthenightthe.day,that,infuture,sPortmaybereviewedina morefavourableandcleaneraspect.

Thenumberofpastimesatthe Present,inwhichinterestistaken forthesportitself,isverysmall. Football,horse-racing,swimming, andpedestrianism,nottomention Whippet-racing,maybeenumerated (touseaforcibleexpression)as "take-down"sport.Wethink,then, ifwereviewourcatalogueofpastinoslandrejecttheabove-mentioned wehavefewgamesinwhichany truesportsman,couldorwould,indulge.Seeingthen,resultantupon this,thatsolittlescopeisafforded inthisregard,wearesurprisedthat somemoreennoblinggameisnot givenanopportunityofdisplaying Itsmeritsandperhapsitssuperiority.WenoticedlatelyinthePress, thataHandballClubhadbeenformedinconnectionwiththisSociety. Beinganoldenthusiastofthisenjoyablegame,Iwasdelightedthatat last,theCatholicyoungmen of KalgoorliebadfollowedinthefootstepsofalmosteveryotherSociety ofthiskindinAustralia.Such greatinterestisevincedinthe gameintheEasternStates,forexample,thatrepresentativeteams fromBallarat,MelbourneandAdelaidemeetannually,andsometimes oftener,totryconclusionsonthe Courtserectedinthesecentres.In fact,atournamenthasjustbeenconcludedinMelbourne,inwhichH. BurrowsofBallarat,defeatedT. LeahyofAdelaideby31to15and 311to29,forthetitleofchampion HandhallerofAustralia.

Anobjectionmighthereberaised, withreferencetoourlastfewremarks,viz.,-thatthegamehasgot aholdinthedifferentcitiesmentionedandsoweareatadisadvantageherebutwemustthinkbeforefollowingtheexampleofthe impulsiveboywhorefusedto go intothewateruntilhecouldswim, andfurthermoreshouldrenember, thatnoneofuscouldwalkbefore wewereabletomaintainourequilibrismdoingthe"crawl."No. gentlemen,wemustnotwastetime withtheargumentthatweareat adisadvantage.ItPossiblyisa caseof"thespiritwillinghutthe fleshweak,"butweareinclinedto theopinionthatdisinterestedness Inconclusion,wehopetheClub

and,soperhaps,laziness,coversa greatdealofwhatistermeddisadvantage. Thegameofhandballissupposed tohaveoriginatedinSpain,but thishasnotbeenauthenticated; true,itishowever,thatittooka goodholdinIrelandandlinthe NorthofScotlandsometimeinthe 14thcentury.Thegameissowellknown(outsideofKalgoorlieappar- ently),thattherearefewcitiesin Americawheretheenthusiastmay' notpractise.Thegamehasagreat holdinDeomarkatthepresentas anyothergame,andbethenational gameinSpain.Needlesstosayit wouldbefutiletoMentionbow flourishingitisinIreland.

Itsunaningupthen,wemay statethatHandballreceivedconsiderableattentionbeforeFootball,cricket,horse-racing,etc.,etc.,were thoughtof,andeven,beforethepro- verbialbowlswasplayedbyDrake, ontheeveofhisvictory.overthe Armada.Therefore,gentlemen,we thinkthatthishighly,interesting, andscientificgamehas,atleast, somethinginitsfavourrecommendable,andpreferable,Perhaps,to manyothers,and,assuch,should begivensomesmallamountofattentionnowthatwehavetheop- portunity.

Undoubtedly,ifthisweredone,the outdoorinterestsofyourprogres- sivesocietywouldbeaswellcateredfor,as,judgingbyyoursocial prosperity,theindooramusements are. youhaveformedwillbegiventhe patronagethegamemerits,andwe aresurethatresultantuponsucha coursebeingadopted,yourmember- shipwillnotdiminishbutrather increaseinthenearfuture,asthe scholarsattendingtheonlyCatholic Boys'Schoolinthedistrict,who doubtlesswillheeligibletoenter yourSocietyasmembersarenow. andwehopealwayswillbeaffordedamnlescopeforparticipatingin thegameofHandballItFAIR-PLAY.

MarcoPolo,thefamousVenetian Neoisator,haddaringcompetitors inBartholomewDiaz,andVascoda Gama.TheyroundedtheCapeof GoodHopeandplantedEuropean outpostsintheIndies.FinallyColumbuscomeswithhisdiscoveryof anewworld1492.Thecannon boomingattheBeigeofConstantinople,in1453,wasaclearand emphaticannouncementtotheworld thattheageofGunpowderwasat hand.Thefallofthatcity,thenthe capitalofGreekculture,sentscores oflearnedrefugeesintoItaly,GermauyandFrance,wheretheywere receiJedwithopenarmsandinstalledasteachersintheUniversities. This,andtheinventionofprinting, -analmostcontemporaneousoccurrence-areconsideredthetwogreat causesoftherevivaloflearning.

TheGreeksrousedanewinterestin classicalstudy.Simultaneously therewasanewinterestinscientificstudy,partly,butnotentirely duetocontactwiththeArabsand Moors.Theliteratureofeveryaountryfelttheimpulseofthisawakenedconverse.Itwasa"newberth" toletters,andtheepochhasbeen fitlysocalled,-theRenaissance.

AsforPrinting,itsvastimportance,iseasytoimagine.Itwent intoimmediateanduniversalUse.

"Mussulmanimpiety,"saidthe contemporaneous.PopeUrbanII, addressingthegreatCouncilatPiacenzain1095,atwhich"twohundredBishopsandnearlyfourthousandpriestswerepresent,"hasoverspreadthefairestregionsofAsia; Ephesus,NiceandAntiochhavebecomeMohammedancitiesthebarbaroushordesoftheTurks,have plantedtheircoloursonthevery shoresoftheHellespont,whence theythreatenwaronallourStates ofChristendom.Unlessyouoppose amightybarriertotheirtriumphantcourse,howcanEurope be savedfrominvasion,howcanthe stormbeavertedwhichhas so longthreatenedtoburstuponour countries?"Withchristiancivilisation,itwasawarofselfpreservation.InthisrespecttheCrusades wereanotablesuccess.Insteadof WaitingasdisunitedStates,toreceivetheblowofMohammedaninvasion,thenationsofEurope"took timebytheforelock,"weldedthemseisesintounity,andmade the aggressivemorethemselves.The SaracensandSeljukianswerebeatentotheground.Theissue for supremacy'wasinevitablebetweenthe religionbornatGalileeandthat bornat'Mecca.Romesawfarthest ahead.Inthisconnectionitisthat CardinalNewman,remarks,that thoseinourtimespeaksobravely againstthePope,oweittothe Pope,thattheycanspeakatall. Thenest(A.D.1090),fifth(A.D.. 1201),andsixth(A.D.,1228),Crusadeswerethemostimportant,at leastontheirresults.

In1099thefirstCrusaderscapturedJerusalemandsetupaChristianKingdomthere,whichlasted eighty-eightyears.In1205aLatin Empirewasestablishedinplaceof theGreekempireatConstantinople. andtheEasternschismappearedto beatanend.Butthisunion of theeasternandwesternchurches sionoftheChristiansbyTreatyin Latinempirewasoverthrown.JerusalemagaincameintothepossessionoftheChcictiansbyTreatyin 1229(asaresultofthesixthCrusade),butin1242thehordes of FenshizKhanagainsweptawaythe Christiandominion,nordidthesubsequentCrusadersevergetasfar astheHolyCity.Thelastor ninthCrusade,underS.Louis,King ofFrance,wentoutA.D.1270.Nazarethwastaken,buttheretheenterpriseended.
