Thedemonstratorsretaliatedwith anotherfusiladeofmissiles, and soonageneralmeleebetweenpolice andpeoplewasinprogress.There weresomehalf-doyenhands,with bannersinattendance,andbefore manyminuteshadelapsedtherewas nothingseenontheroadsidebut prostratebodies,brokendrums,torn banners,andfleeingpeasantry.

AstothedemandforHomeRule hesaidthatbyHomeRulethey meantsimplybeingallowed,intheir ownway,hereinthiscountry,and accordingtotheirownIrishideas, togovernthecountry,innational affairs,justastheyweregoverning itsuccessfullyintheCountyCouncilsatthepresentmoment.Allthey wantedwastobeallowedtodevote theirenergiestothesocial,educational,andmaterialelevationof theircountry.Mr.Redmondthen combattedtheideathattheywould oppressProtestantsifthey'got HomeRule,andsaidthatinWexfordthelittlecoloniesofProtestantsandQuakerswerethemostrespectedpeopleinthewholecommunity,andwhenoneofthemcame forwardtoespousethenational cause,theCatholicmajoritytripped

TheKilkennyHurlersretainthe AllIrelandChampionship-theTipperary.menwholodgedobjection foundthattheirobjectionhadno foundationinfact,andtheyaccordinglywithdrew.

Thelatter,afterreachingthe browofasmallhill,againcharged, aidedwithreinforcements.Inthis meleeseveralpolicewereseriously injured. Againthepolicecharge, butthepeoplefledacrossamoving bog,whereheavily-equippedconstabularycouldnotfollow.

Abayonetchargewasafterwards ordered,andthecrowddispensedin alldirections.Severalminorencounterstookplace,butatlength theeffortsofMr.Smythandthe Rev.FatherCasey,C.C.,wiresuccessfulincalmingtheangerofthe crowd,andcomparativepeacewas r.'stored.Asdarknesssetinanumberofrevolvershotswereheard.

Suhseiuentlyameetingwasheld somedistanceawayfromtheevicted farm,butnofurthertroubleensued, andthecrowdwentquietlyhome.

Oneofthesaddesteffectsofthe secularismandtheirreligiousenvironmentWhichobtainsso'widelyin Australiaisthealmostirresistible tendencyofouryoungmentogrow upliketheirfellows.Nomatter howgoodtheirrearingmay,have been,evenaccentuatedbytheexampleofgoodparentsand,theedificationoftheirsisters,ouryoung boys,inverymanycasesigiveearly evidencethattheyareonthedownwardgrade,andthattheypreferit tothenarrowpathwhichisbeset withtheobstaclesofreligion.Takingtheweaknessofnatureinto consideration this tendency ofyouthiseasyofexplanation,and Yetitissomethingof,aparadoxto findthatastheyoungboyripens intomanhoodhedepartsfromthe waysofhisyouth.Ifourboysdid butclingtotheteachingwhichthey receivedinourCollegesandSchools andChurches,duringthetenor twelveyearsoftheirstudentship, theywouldhemuchbettermembers ofSocietythantheyareusually foundtobe,butthepenchantfor pleasureandgratificationissucha PrevalentcharacteristicofAustralian life,thattheboyscatchitsfever beforetheircharacteriehalfdeveloped.Takethepassionforgambling.Scarcelyarethesonsableto Peruseathirdstandardreaderthan theirparentsinitiatethemintothe gamblingarena.Theydonotmean toharmthelads,theysimplygive themtheopportunityofriskinga fewshillingsonahorse-not,however,thehorseoftheirfancyor judgment-fortheyhaveneitherat thatage,butonthehorse,whose successhasbeenvouchedforbysome tipsterinthegame.Sometimes theywin,andtheparentsareproud ofthehorseyacumenoftheirsons; asoften,however,theylose,andthe parentsaremerelydisappointed. Otherevilamusementsforour youngmenaretheexcessivecard playingandtoofrequencyofclubs andsaloons,fornogoodpurpose. Wemastnotberegardedas too prudishifwequotewhatSt.FrancisDeSales,oneofthekindestand mostgenerous-mindedofmen,speakingofexcessivecardplayingsaid: "Gamesofthisnature,"saidhe, "are -drecreation,andtheywere inventedtoservethatpurpose,yet theydonotbyanymeansserve th' purposeforwhichtheyweeinventedforasamatteroffacttheyare nothingbutaseverementalstrain. OurCatholicboysandyoungmen arealsounfortunateinthecompany theyarethrowninto,whenthey starttoearntheirliving.Ifthey happentobeblessedwithamodicumofcommonsense,andarewell educatedintheirreligion,andkeep upthepracticeofit,thereislittle tofearJoysuchmenbutwhenthey areill-equippedinreligiousknowledgeandwithalfoolishlyconceited, theunprincipledsuggestions,andthe corrodingmaterialismoftheirantiCatholicassociationssinkdeepinto theirminds,andtheyverysoonfall victims.Thereareseveralothersocalledyoungmen'samusements whichwemaynotdwelluponinthis connectionthe'dangerous,thesinfulandthescandalousamusements. Itisdeplorabletoseethedepthto whichouryoungt ofwhom wereonceprivilegedtobeAltar Boys-havedescended.itisnohonourtothem.TheCatholicyoung manwhofallsinwithirreligious companions,whoconsequentlyneglectsMassandtheSacraments,is notfittohetrusted,muchlaserespeenedorhonoured.Suchaman betray'sthegreatesttrustevergiventoahumanbeingandhedoes itwithathoroughconsciousnessof theevilinvolvedinit,andifheis faithlessinthatwhichisgreaten heisorwillbefaithlessinthat whichisless.Thisgodlessdispoei-

Oristheirstandardof comfortandluxuryhigher,ortheir self-lovemoredeveloped?Ormay itpossiblyhethattheyviewmarris4emore'seriously,aremorealive toitsresponsibilities,andaware thattheeasy)evasionoftheseresponsibilitiespractisedbylargenumbersofProtestantscannotheavailed ofbyCatholicparents? Certainit isthatCatholicmarriagesaremore fruitfulthanthoseofnon-Catholics, whichfactgoestoprovethatwhen Catholicmendocontractmarriage, theyarefaithfultoitsobligations. Then,again,theCatholicsenseof dutyisverydeep,andisoftena causeofdelayedmarriage,theclaims ofanagedfatherormother,or both,onhisearningspreventinga sonfromcontractinganewobligation.Inthismatteritwereperchancerashtojudgeandunwiseto condemn,thoughwearesafein censuringthosewhorefrainfrom marriageforselfishreasons,or throughtimorousdistrustofProvidence.Anotherstatementwehave heardinconnectionwiththemixed marriagequestionisthat,though thereisalosstotheChurchin somecases,thereisagaininothers,andthegainoutweighstheloss. Thisisanargumentwedonotadmitforamoment.Thegainisno. gain,becausethechildrenofaCatholic'mother,shouldbeCatholic. Thelossremains,for,again, thechildren ofa Catholic,A shouldbeCatholic. mothere 'wellabsolutelylosessomany Catholics.Itcanhardlybesaid thatshealsogainssomany,unless weagreethattheirmotherswould nothavemarriedatallunlessthey' marriedProtestants-aproposition wedonotadmit.Theaboveconsideration,ofCourse,leavesoutthe torment,themisery,themutualunhappinessofsomanymixedmarriages. Whenallallowanceismadeforthe non-marryingyoungman,itwould appearthatthemenofourdaylack toaconsiderableextentthecourageandthemanlytrustoftheir-.fathers.Whoisthereamongstus whohasnotknowledgeoflargefamiliesrearedonalabourngman's wage,comingintonootherheritage butcleanblo:xl,health,andunimpairedintellect,andwhosemembers have,allthesame,madetheirmark inthecommunityasdoctors,lawyers,andsuccessfulbusinessmen? Themodernyoungmanshuddersat thethoughtoftheprivationsenduredbythoseparentsoflargefamilies,andvetthesacrificesweremore thancompensatedfor,andtherewas greathappinessintheirhomes.Selfiniulgenceandavoidanceofthedutiesandburdensoflifearenotthe kernofhappiness. Thenumerous familywitnessedtocharacterinthe parentsitdevelopedcharacterin thechildren.Inthiscasequality,

andquantitygotogether,whilethe restrictedfamily,asitistheresult ofadepravedmoralsenseandweakSeesofcharacter,mustbeexpected toshareinthedefectsofitintorigin.
