Yr.W.Dwyerwasinthechair, andaftertheusualloyaltoasthad behonoured,proposedthetoast oftheevening-"TheDayWeCelebrate."Hepointedoutthatthe eveningwasinasensethecontinuationofSt.Patrick'sDay,forthey, wereabouttocelebratethesuccess thathadmettheireffortsandto clearuptheiraccountsbyhanding overthetaneiblerepresentationof theirwork.Hehadtoreturnhis mostheartfeltthankstothoseindividualsandbodieswhohadassisted sowellinmakingthecelebrationsa success.InParticularhehadto tenderthinkstotheBoulderRacing Club,whohadmostgenerouslylent theirgrounds,andhadalwaysassistedthesocietytotheWhippetClub, andtotheAutomotileClub.Without theassistanceoftheofficersofthose bodies,theirsportsandpublicentertainmentduringthedaycouldnot havebeenasuccess.Inhonouring theanniversaryofSt.Patrick,they weredoingsomethingmorethan honouringthememoryofanational saintandsaviour.St.Patrickhad landedinIrelandwhenitwasunder thedarkestcloudofpaeanism.He piercedthesecloudswiththebrieht sunshineofChristianityandcivilisation,andmorethanthishemade Irelandthecentreofleernineofthe
ancientworld.Therewasnota countryinEuropewhichdidnot oweitsfirstrudimentsofknowledgetothemissionariessentout fromthecollegeandschoolsupervisedbySt.Patrick.Tohimwasdue thefirstgreatmissionaryeffortin Europe,andthegreatinfluence wieldedasshowninthatstudents flockedfromallpartsofthewestern worldtogainknowledgetobeinstructedinreligion,morality,and philosophyatthelipsofthegrandestfigureofancienthistory.Asa resulteverycountryhadatthefoundationofitsliteraturesomerevered Irishgenius,aswasshownbytherecentinvestigationsamongtheancientmanuscripts Europe. Itwas thatthememory halraisedIreland,tothepinnacleof fameinthetrinityofreligious,moral,andeeilosailoceiqualifi oid shouldbeheldsacredtothegreat causeofIrishnationalismandof Irishself-government.Throughages ofoppression,Irelandtdheldtrue tothememoryofthemailwhohad foundedherereatfame.Despitethe fict,thateducationwasproseribel -despitethefactthatancientglories hadbeencloudedbyforciblemeans, sothatIrelandceasedforatheeto bethefountofknowledge,theaspirationsofIrishmenremainedthe same,andthenationalism,which wasoppressedonly,becamethe strongerforitsopPression. They inAustraliawerefreetoenjoy'the blessingsofself-government.They hadpassedintheFederalParliamentamotiondeclaringforIreland'sself-eovernment-forIrelandto betreatedasAustraliaandasthe otherdenendenciesweretreated,and theIrishnationalismasserteditself theworldover.Hehonedthesigns ofthetimeswouldsbowtheconsummationofIreland'sgeeltidealof self-management.Whenthatcame, hewassuretheircountrywouldbecomeoncemoreasinSt.Patrick's Day-aseatoflearning,ofadvanced
