Atterthepreliminariesof.reception thepartyweretakenovertheschool wheretheysawthestudentsatwork andwheretheysaweveryevidence oftheirclassificationandthenumbersattendingtheCollege. They werethenconductedtothelargest room,intheestebliehment,onenteringwhichthestudentslustily sandtheentireNationalAnthem. WhenallwereseatedtheRev.Bro. Culligan,saidthatitgavetheteachersandscholarsoftheCollege greatpleasure.tomeetSirFredericeandLadyBedford,andtheotherspresenttherethatday. They welcomedhisExcellencyfortworeasons.Inthefirstplacetheywelcomedhimastherepresentativeei KingEdward,anIsecondly,they' welcomedhimandLadyBedfordas trueandsincerefriendsoftheCollege.Theywereallcognisantofthe factthatannuallyHisExcellencyhad beenkindenoughtodonateacup tobecompetedforbythepupils, andthisyearthatcuphadbeenawardedtothechampionrunnerof theCollege.Thepracticalinterest shownbySirFrederic.:inthat.and otherwayshadbeenagreatincentivetothem,andhadledthemto endeavourtoexcelineverybranch ofcollegework.Whattheyvalued mostofallwashisExcellency'skind appreciationoftheirwork.Thishe hadshown,notonlybydonatingannualprizesforliteraryandathletic subjects,butespeciallybyhiskindnessinattendingtheirannualcommemorationattheendofeveryacademicyear.Theywereallsatisfied whentheysawthoseinhickplaces recognisetheireffortsandheard themgiveexpressiontotheirappreciationoftheworkthey(theChristianBrothers)weredoingforthe promotionofCatholiceducationin theState. Theywereexceedingly sorrythatSirFrederick,andLady Bedfordwouldbeforelongbedepartingfrom'WesternAustralia,andin orderthattheymighthavesomethinginthefuturetoremindthem oftheCollegetheydesiredtopresenttoLadyBedfordalittlemomentowhichhadspontaneouslybeen subscribedforbyallthestudents. HisLordship,BishopGibney,said thatitwaswithsincerepleasurehe waspresenttotakepartinthereceptiontoHisExcellencyandLady Bedfordthatday.HisExcellency wasabouttorelinquishthePosition ofGovernor,buthewouldremainan Admiral,andanAdmiralofthe greatestnavyinntheworldwasa
astherepresentativeofthegreatest Empireoftheearth,andhehoped thatitwouldremainso.Personally,hewasnotamemberofacowardlyrace,andiftherewerenot Dreadnoughtsbehindhimandkis ovencountrytherewereplentyof "Fearnoughts."(Applause).HebelievedthatabrightdaywascomingforIreland,whenherpeople wouldbeascontentedandenjoythe sameprivilegesastheAustralian people.Thereweretwogreatkingdomsontheearthonehehasmentioned,andtheotherwastheCatholicChurch.TheChurchhehadthe honourtorepresent,howeverunworthilyinthiscommunity,wasnot confinedtoanyland.AllthechildrenofthatChurchwastaughtthat theyweresubjectsoftheKingand theGovernorssentbyhim.That subjectionsimplymentreverence andobediencewhenn.2sesaryThe ruleoftheCatholicCarchwasthat theywareboundtoobeytheKing thesameastheyweretheHolyFather,eachintheirrespectivespheres. Reverence,obedience,andsacrifice weretheruleswhichmustbefollowedineverycivilisedcommunity. ThatCollegehadbeenexceptionally kindlytreatedbytheirExcellencies, andhewasgladthatteachersand pupilshadthatopportunityofshowingtheirappreciationandregardfor SirFrederickandLadyBedford.Ho wassuretheywouldalljoinwith himinwishingtheirExcellenciesa safeandpleasantvoyagetoEngland andlongandprosperouslives.
Mr.DerwasCumming,theCaptain oftheCollegeCricketClub,andone oftheprefectsoftheschonl,onbehalfoftheteachersandstudents, thenpresentedLadyBedfordwitha handsomesilver-mountedtoilet-case, containingcut-glasstoiletarticles andsuitablyinscribed,bearingWesternAustralianemblems.
LatyBedfordmadeaneatlittle speechofac'nowledgement(teetering howmuchsheappreciatedthespirit ofthestudents'andpromisingto cherishtheirpresentasasouvenir ofthekindnessofthestudentsat theChristian.Brothers'College. HisExcellencysaidthatlieappreciatedtheopportunityofmeeting allpresent,sothathemightbid themgood-bye.Hethankedtheir PrincipalandHisLordshiptheBishopforthekinreferencestheyhad madetoLady,Bedfordandhimself, andhealsodesiredtoexpressfor Lady,Bedlordherheartfeltthanks fortheirhandsomepresent. They hadspokenoftheinteresthehad takenintheCollege,buttheymight bequitesurethatifhedid'notbelievetheCollegewasdoinggood workfortheStatehewouldnot havetakenanyinterestinitatall.
(Applause.)Itwasnotnecessary forhimtorecallallthesuccesses gainedbythescholarsoftheCollege.Theyhadgainedanumberof scholarshipsandexhibitions,and theCollegehadproducedtwoRhodes scholarsintheshorttimethose scholarshipshadbeeninexistence, andwould,hebelievedinthefuture producemanymore,.whiletheirsuecessesatcicketandfootballand everythingelsewasquitesufficient toshowthattheauthoritiesofthe schooldidnotdevotetheirenergies solelytotrainingtheirscholarsto gaineducationalprizes,butalsoencouragedtheminthatmostimportantpartofschoolboylifer,namely, exercises.Theycouldcalltomind manyprominentmenwhohadbeen educatedatthatCollege,andhehad nodoubtthatmanyofthosehesaw beforehimwouldinthefuturetake aleadingpartintheaffairsorthe State.itwaswellforthemtorememberthatinalandlikeAustraliaitwasPossibleforthemtorise tothehighestpositions.Ofcourse theycannotallbePremiersbut PositionrotsecondtoanyGovernor-hewouldhavethemkeeninmind
thefactthatinalandlikeWestern Australia,whichwasbeingadvanced everyday,and,whichwoulddevelop muchmorerapidlyintheruture theycouldaspiretothehighest position. They,shouldbethankful thattheyhadtheopportunityof attendingareallygoodschoolwhere theycouldbetrainedtobegoodan usefulcitizensoftheCommonwealth andatthesametimeimbibeareverenceforandloyaltytotheKing, whomtheyhadneverseen,butwhom theyhonouredasheadofanEmpire whichwasworthyofbeingmaintainedatanycost.Somepeople spokelightlyaboutthatmatte*. Theyhadrecently,heardtheexpression"cuttingthePainter."That wasaphrasewhichitmightbe thoughtshouldappealtohimasa seafaringman,butitdidnotdo so. Whatwoulditmean?It wouldmeanthedisintegrationofthe greatEmpirewhichnowasawhole wasthegreatestfactorforpeacein theuniverse. Nonationcould touchthefringeoftheBritishEmpirewithouttheheartbeingaffected, andeverypartoftheEmpirewas readytospringtotheassistaneeof thepartinterferedwith.Butbreak theEmpireintofragmettsandthere wouldnothethesameinterestor feelingcallingupontheotherparts tocometotheassistanceofthe Partaffected.Theyallknewthat nowifEnglandwereattaceedAustraliawouldveryspeedilysendhelp, andthatifAustraliawerethreatenedGreatBritainwouldsendassistanceacrossthewaterinavery shortspaceoftime.HisLordship hadsaidthatthoughhemightcease tobeaGovernorhewouldstillremainanAdmiral.Hehadnoticed thatamongtheotherflagswhich decoratedthewall,theyhadkindly placedhisoldflag.ItwassupportedoneachsidebyUnionJacks, andheaskedthemnottoletthat oldflaggooutoftheirshool.He hopedthattheirCollegewouldcontinuetoprosperandbeasourceof goodtotheStateinwhichthey lived.
Attheconclusionofthespeech Bro.Culliganannouncedthathe wouldgrantahalf-oolidaytothe stndentsinhonouroftheauspicious ccasion,whereattheGovernordeclaredthathehadforgottentomake theannouncementhimself. The studentsreceivedtheannouncement vociferously.
Anadjournmentwasthenmadeto thediningroom,whichwasbeautifullydrapedandornamentedwith wonderfultastewithpotplantsand evergreens.Thetablswereladen withtemptingdaintes,andafter lightrefreshmentswerepartaken, theRev.Bro.NunanatthesuggestionofBro.Culliganproposedthe healthoftheGovernorinahighly eulogisticma-ner.Inthecourseof thespeechhesaid "thathehadlivedinWestern AustraliaunderthreesuccessiveGovernors,/eachofwhomhadtakenvery specialinterestinthesuccessand welfareoftheChristianBrothers' College.Buthehadnohesitationin sayingthatSirFrenerickBedford hadsurpassedallhispredecessorsin hisinterestintheCollegeandhis kindnesstowardsthem.HisExcellevybyhiscontinuedgoodnessto them,hadendearedhimselftoteachersandscholarsaliketoanextraordinarydegree.Hehadgiventhem manypresentsandprizestobecompetedfor,andhecouldassurethem thattheboysalllovedHisExcellencyandregrettedverymuchhis approachingdeparture.Theyfelt theywouldneverhaveanotherGovernorlikeSirFrederickBedford.He wouldliketosayinregard'tothe educationof'theCollegethat, thoughtheyPaidthegreatestattentiontotheCatholictoysandeducatedtheminCatholicprinciples, theyalsoaffordedthegreatestopportunitiestotheboyswhodidnot belongtothatchurchtoattend theirrespectiveChurchesandgain religiousknowledgefromtheirown Pastors.Averylargeproportionof theirscholarswereeitherProtestants orJews,andhediddesire)toimpressuponallpresentthatnoattemptwasmadetointerferewith thereligionsbeliefsofthosescholars
whowerenon-Catholics.Alotof theirleadingboyswerenotRoman Catholics.HetrustedthatSirFrederickandLadyBedfordwould,have along,happy,andusefulcareerin England.
TheMayorofPerth(Mr.Molloy), insupportingthetoastsaidthathe wassurehewasexpressingthesentimentsofallthePeopleofWestern AustraliawhenhesaidtheyregrettedexceedinglytheapproachingdepartureofSirFrederickandLady Bedford.ThecitizensofPerthwere indebtedtotheirExcellenciesfor manyactsofkindnessperformed44 ringtheirresidenceinWesternAustralia.Ithadbeentrulysaidthat neverbeforehadtheyhidaGovernorwhohadtakenmoreinterestin everythingthatpertainedtothewelfareoftheStatethanhadSirFrederickBedford.Hetrustedthatthe scholarsoftheCollegewouldnot beallowedtoforgetthatasAustralianstheyweremembersofthegreat BritishEmpire,whichhadconferred somanybenefitsupontheminAustralia.Therepresentativesofthe citizensofPerthwouldhaveanopportunitylateron,intheTownHall ofgivingexpressiontothefeelings .1thepeopleinregardtoSirFrederickandLadyBedford,and,hewas suretheywereinaccordancewith thesentimentswhichhadbeenexpressedthatmorning.
