Butmake nomistake.Incondemninganimmoralabuse,Christianitybringsno chargeagainstanypurelyeoaomicalsystem. Itacceptscapitalsm andthemoderntheoreticalbasisof progressiveindustry.Noristhere anythingwronginthem.Capitalismbyitsemploymentoflabour andbyitsabilitytodirectitinthe lineofthemostprofitableandusefulproduction,isthemainsource ofindustrialwealth.Anyinterferencewiththissystemmustdislocate labour,destroytrade,andimpoverishthecountry.Inthesameway Christianityfindsnofaultwiththe fundamentalprinciplesofcommerce
whichstillcontinuetobetheaxioms firstenunciatedbythepoliticaleconomistsofthei8thcentury. TheseAssertedthatWealthwas theNaturalBasisandProper AimofCommerce.
Theyalsoclaimedthatself-interest wasapredominantmotiveofhuman action,andthat,forthematerial benefitofthecommunity,ample scopeshouldbeallowedtothis forceinthepursuitandproduction ofwealth.Noraretheseprinciples erroneousinthemselves.Solone astheyareinterpretedintheWant oftheGospelandinfullviewof Godasthefinalendoflife,theyare notwantingintruth.
