BrotherAnthonywasanativecf Thomastown,nearRathangan,Co. Kildare,wherehisfamilyisoneof themostrespectedintheneighbourhood.HejoinedtheDeLaSalle OrderinLondonover30yearsago, andpassedhisfirstyearsofreligiouslifeatSt.Joseph'sCollege, Clapham.Sincethattimehetilled withcreditmanypositions'oftrust inhisOrder,andhedirectedthe CollegeoftheBrothersinLondon andwas,subsequently,formany years,attheheadofSt.Joseph's IndustrialSchool,Manchester. It wasunderhisdirectionthatthis schoolacquiredthe..distinguished plaAithassinceheldamonginstitutit-Ili-ofitsclassintheNorthof England.In1892,attheearly,age of35,BrotherAnothywasappointed ProvincialoftheOrderinIreland andfromthatdaytothetimecf hisdeath,everythoughtofhisenlightenedmind,andalltheenergies ofhissplendidphysiquewerespent intheservicesofhisinstitute. 7.n itsinterestshetravelledinnearly everycountryintheworldand whereverhewenthiskindlyIrish manner,aswellashisinnatenobi lityofcharacter,attractedtohim numerousandlife-longfriends.Indeed,itisliterallytruetosaythat

NotwithstandingtheuniversalfavourtheGaelicLeaguehaswonamongallclassesinIreland,andnotwithstandingthefactthatitiseverywhereacknowledgedthatthe countryhasreapedmanybenefits fromitslabours,yetthereareOatholicIrishmenofeducationand.

Position,onthesideofDublinCastle,invigorousoppositiontothe League'sdemandregardingthestatusofthenationallanguageinthe newuniversity-thatis,theknowledgeofIrishtobecompulsoryat thematriculationexamination.While! theseoppositionistsacknowledgethe League'sideatobetherightonein theory,they,vehementlycondemnit asimpracticable,buttheLeague,undauntedbyapparentobstacles, maintainsanuncompromisingattitude.

A manwhohasbeenafaithful,zealouspriestinmanypartsofWesterni Australia,performingtheworkofa missionaryincentreswherethewore ofGod,wasmuchneeded.Amananxiousforthespreadofeducation throughoutthelengthandbreadthof theState,whohasdevotedallhis means,intellectualandpecuniary,to thatobject,andhascausedhisname tobecloselyandhonourablyassociatedwiththehistoryofeducation inWesternAustralia.Aripescholar,widelyanddeeplyreadamusicianwhoseviolin,hadhislotbeen castinotherplaces,mighthavewon himaprominentpositioninthe musicalworld. Amanrespected andlovedby'menandwomen,and wellnighidolisedbychildrento whomthenameofFatherBourke conjuresupallthatisloveablein one'sclosest,andmostbelovedrelative.AmanheldinaffectionateregardbyhisBishopandbrotherclergy,andbyeverySisterhoodconnectedwithhisChurchamanhonouredbytheVaticaninamanner thatfallstothelotoffewpriestsin Australia.Aman,too,uponwhom evenTimehassmiledkindly,for thoughheisnowinhis74thyear, andhasenduredhardshipssuchas thepresentgenerationcanscarcely conceive,workingandstudyingearly andlate,andlivingalifeofconstantsacrificeofhimselfand thoughtforothers,allofwhichhave lefttheirmarkonhim,yetinmany respectsMonsignorBourkephysicallyisasyoungashisheart,which stilibeatssostrongforhumanity. FatherBourkeisanativeofDab lin,wherehewasbornonSeptember 10,183;. Wheninhistwentieth year,heleftforWesternAustralia, wherehearrivedonMay24,1853. WhatturnedhisattentiontoWestern Australiawasthis. Twoofhis schoolfellows,Messrs.Reynoldsand Bryne,werepassingthroughDublin ontheirway,tothisState,orcolonyasitwasthen.Theyhadbeen inItalyforafewyears,andthey suggestedtotheirschoolchumthat heshouldaccompanythemtoWes ternAustralia.Thesuggestionwas accepted,andthethreeyoungmen formedmembersofalargeparty,all ofwhomwereinthecareofBishop Serra,whoforsometimeruledthe CatholicdioceseofPerth,andunder whom,theBishop'sPalace,nearthe CathedraloftheImmaculateConceP tion,wasundertakenandcompleted.

TheCatholicChurchhasalways beenagreatbuilderinWesternAustrala. Longbeforethecomparativelyrecentaccessofpopulation andactivity,theSpanishclergyhad accomplishedalargeshareofwork inthecolony.TheCathedraland Palace,theOrphanageatSubiaco, theChurchandPriest'sHouseat Fremantle,churchesatGuildford, Toodyay.,Albany,Geraldton,and Busseltonhadbeenbuiltaswellas school-housesinmostofthose places.Theworkthusbegunhas spreadinalldirections,andtoenarneratethelargenumberofbuiblinge onwhichtheactivitiesoftheCatholiccommunityhavebeenspent wouldoccupyconsiderablespace.In thepresentsketchitisnecessary onlytorefertothosewithwhich FatherBourke'snamehasbeenmore particularlyassociatedduringthe pasttwodecades-St.Brigid's.As alreadystated,thesehadaverymodestbeginning-asmallcottage.The firstconnectionofthesitewiththe buildingslayinthepurchasebyBishopGibneyoftheupperpartofthe allotment,whichfrontsAberdeen, FitzgeraldandJohnstreets,from thelateMr.O'Dea,thefatherofone ofthepartnersofawellknowncity firm,acoupleofyearsbeforeoperationscommenced. Mailcommunicationwiththemotherland,bywool shipsonceayear,asfarasFremantle,andthenceinanopenboatby rivertakingmanyhourstomake thejourney.Whatarenowstreets inWestPerthinthevicinityofSt. Brigid's,werethendensebushin deed,betweenaspotafewhundred yardswestofwheretheTownHall standsandSubiaco,nothingbut thedensestbushintervened,Subiacowasinexistence,butitthen gavenoindicationthatinfuture yearsitwastobeoneofthemost extraordinaryinstancesknownof urbangrowth,largelyduetothe thriftoftheworkingclassestwas simplyamonasticsettlementinvirginbush.Themonasterywasbuilt bytheSpaniardsofpaperbark,and inoneoftheroomsformedofthat materialFatherBourkeusedtosleep andspentsomeofhiswakingaoute lookingupthroughthecrevicesin theroofatthestars.Itwaslong afterthisthatthestonebuilding waserected. Itwasinthelater Subiaco-butstilltheSubiacoofthe bush--thatthe"WestAustralianRe cord"wasstartedandformany yearshaditsoffice,andamongst thosewhoheldthepostsofeditor andmanagerofthatpaperwase'atherBourke,whodescribesthetime heputinforyearsinthosepositions asamongstthemostarduousinais life.TheBishop'sPalacewasthen athatchedcottageoffourorfive smallrooms,occupiedbyabouta dozenoftheSpanishcle,egy,most ofthemmenofsubstantialproportions.Onepeculiarityofthecottarewasthatithadamagnificent gardeninfront,andinthis,the Spaniardswhowerecapable,enthusi. asticgardeners,cultivatedfruitsof variouskindsandplentyofvegetables.Therewasonlyonehankthen inexistenceinPerth-theWestern Australian-anditwasheldinthe premisesitoccupieduntilit-removed tothepresentsite-thosepremises beingnowoccupiedbyFoyandGibsoninSt.George's-terrace. The MilitaryBarracks-nowusedbythe PublicWorksDepartment-hadnot beenbuiltitwashush.Theroadto Fremantlewasnotthatwhich-runs throughKarrakatta,Claremont,Cottesloe,andothersuburbs-whichwas builtbyGovenorHamptonwithpri-

sonlabour.TheonlyroadtoFremantleinthosedayslayoverthe Causeway,andrightroundatthe baccoftheriverand,overtheCanningBridge.TherewerefewmacadamisedstreetsinthecitySt. George's-terracewasnoticeablefor stumpsjuttingupoutoftheroadwayratherthanformacadamspread overit.Hay-streetwasmuchthe same.Therewasnoattemptat gradingthestreetsroseandfell withtheundulatingsurface,heavy, orlight,providedbynature.What macadamwastoheseenwasalittle narrowstripalongthecentreof thosethoroughfaresforafewhundredyards.Perthwas,indeed,a bushcapital.Afelehousesand otherbuildingsinthecentreoutsidethatrestrictedareamainlybush withhereandthereasmallgarden andahumble-lookinghomestead.

Everybodyknew everybodyelse. Theyallhadto maketheirownamusements,butif thesewereofasomewhatprimitive kindtheywerenonethelessenjoyable.GovernmentHousewasthe acknowledgedcentreofcultureat thattime,andsettheexamplein suchfashionsasthenexisted.Peoplehad,perforce,tolivelargelyin accordancewiththeprinciplesof the"simplelife,"buthearing,seeing,andknowinglittleofthecurrentaffairsoftheworldoutsideWesternAustralianshorestheywerenot ofthewholeparticularlyconcious ofanylostormissedopportunities. ThisstateofaffairswasindeedcharacteristicofWesternAustraliafor aconsiderableportionofFather Bourke'slifehere.Whenhearrived theCatholicportionofthecontinuaitynumberedabouta.thousand,,,r tenthofthepopulation.Thesewere scatteredoveranumberofsparselyinhabitedcentres,buttheareaof habitationwasmorerestrictedthan atpresent. NeitherRoebourne, WyndhamnorDerbywereinexistenceanymorethanthegoldfields townsGeradlionandNorthampton formedthemostnortherlysettlements.

Itmaybe awakeningtothefactasrealasft isdeplorable,thatwithoutreligion deleiteretaughtintheschool,the childrenwillgrowupcorruptedand grotesegenarodiesoftheirparents andancestors.

Thisisavery hopefulsign,andifonemayjudge atallofthefuturefromthepresent attitudeoftheHighChurchParty. andtheRitualists,itseemsbuta matteroftimewhenthewholePartywillreturntothefold,outwhich theirancestorswentafewcenturies ago. HisGrace,however,wasstillmore impressedwiththemagnificentpageantwhichhewitnessedatDusseldorfinGermany,whensixtythou sendmenmarchedinprocessionin honouroftheMostBlessedSacrament.Thisgrandarmyassembled inalargesquare,forbenediction, whichwasgivenfromaplatform capableofholdingthreethousand people.Theoutlookon6o,000stal wartmen,fullofreverenceandloyaltyandfaithandloveintheHoly Eucharist,singingitsdivinepraises asonlytheGermanscanwasthefinestsightHisGracehadeverseen, oreverhopestosee.Thehouses inthevicinityshooktotheirfoundations,whilethewindowsrattledas theywouldunderthestrainofcanon dischargeswhenthemensangthe "LaudaSion"andthe"Pangs Lingua."HisGracefeltveryproudofhis goodfortuneinsecuringabont2600 worthofChurchrequisitesinRome.
