"Parliament,"saidMr.Birrell, oughttomakeupitsmindbetween thecattleandthepeople.Arepeopletogivewaytothecattle,orare thecattletogivewaytothepeople?' Andamidstringingcheers therightlion.gentlemandeclared;"Wecastourlotuponthesideof thepeople." TheGovernmentrecognisestothefulltheextremeimportancetoIrelandofcarryingout asspeedilyaspossiblelandpurchase. TindertheActof1903thereareagreementsoutstandingbetweenlandlordsandtenantsrepresentingover fiftymillionsofmoney.

TheBillprovidestocompletethose tran.actionsandtoconvertthetenantfromamereinterest-payeron hispurchasemoney,intoanactual tenant-purchaserbypayingoffthe landlords,partlyincash,andpartlyineuaranteed2/percent.stock ataminimumof92.Thelossesof flotationinfuturearealltobe transferredfromtheIrishratepayer totheBritishExchequer.Thatwill representasumof£66o,000onthe wholetransaction,andtherelease fromthisyearlyincubuswillmeana veryconsiderablerelieftoIreland, NewPurchaseagreementsenteredinosincetheretofNovemberwillundertheBillbefinancedbya3per cent.guaranteedstock.Thebonus willbegraduatedonaslidingscale ininverseratiotothepurchase price,andmayrunanhighasi6 percent.wherethepurchasepriceis verylow,andmaydwindledownto nilwherethepurchasepricebiasreachedashighas25years'purchase.

ThishasbeenaredhotChristmas onthegoldfields.Commencingon the23rdwithatemperatureof103 degrees,everydaysincesucceededin breakingtherecordofitspredecessor.Sundaywasthehottestand mosttryingdaywehad.Thetemperatureasofficiallygazettedwas only112.Butveryfewifanywould scrupleincreditingitwithanother halfdozendegrees. MembersofbothBranchesofthe HibernianSocietywerethereinregalia,butnotinsuchnumbersas mightbeexpectedfromagoodflourishingCatholicSociety.TheChoir waspoorwhencomparedwithyears goneby.Theredidnotseemtohe morethanhalfadozenmembers therealtogether,andwereitnotfor MissSheedy'sbeautifulrenderingof oursoul-inspiringChristmasmusic theeffortwouldhavebeenverypoor indeed.It'sadisgracetosloeCatholicmenandwomengiftedbyGod withmusicaltalentsofearandvoice andyetbegrudgingtosingHis praisesevenonChristmasDay:.And yet,therearesomesuchmen.and womeninKalgoorlie.

TherecentEuchretournamentorganisedbytheSouthKalgoorlie SchoolCommitteewasarecordfor theGoldfields. Thesetournaments havebecomesopopularthatthe largeschoolwasincapableofaccommodatingthecrowdswhousedattendfromnearandfar.Onthis lastoccasiontheCaledonianHall washiredwiththeobjectofaccommodatingall-corners.Butitscapacitywastaxe,',earlyinthenight. Whenseventy-fourtablesweresurroundedbysomanyquartettesthe housewasdeclaredfull,andabout fiftylatecornerswererefusedadmission. Thefinancialresultshave beenhighlysatisfactory.Already theschooldebthasbeenreduced by£30;andwiththeremainderthe committeearepreparingaNew Year'sTreatforthechildren.Anothersuchtournament,ancltheschool dehtwillheathingofthepast, thankstotheeffortsoftheCommitteeguidedbe,itstwoSecretaries, JackStarrandJimScanlon.Mr. Wilkinson'slatestrifttotheschool isasplendidpress,madebyhimself forthesafe-keepingofallAltarand schoolrequisites. Yetteeandualexpenditureuponthe otherthird,-"theloyalminority," ofDrDillMacky,underthenew EducationActistobealmosttwice asgreatasuponthetwo-thirdsand thisalthoughtheProtestantthird possessesmorethanaproportional shareofthenationalwealth.SurelytheRev.gentleman'sviewsinregardtoeducationalmattersinIrelandaresomewhatoutofshape. Therecanbenoparallelasregards thequestionofdenominationaleducationinIrelandanddenominational educationinEngland.IfProtestant EnglandwishestolaiciseitsChristianity,lether,butCatholicIrelandclaimstherightofthemajority tosay,whatisbestinherownsocial, moralandintellectualinterests.

WithregardtoHomeRule,the reverendgentlemanpointsoutthat Ulsteristheonlyprogressivepart ofIrelandinmaterialwealth.Perhapsheisright.ButbehindUlster'sprogressthereisgraveandbitterhistornandtothestudentwho carestore-openthepagesofIreland'spast,therewillbefounddata ofanorderthatsofarfromreflectingcreditonUlster'senterprisewill beanimpeachmentofthecupidity ofEngland'sruleinIreland."Let sleepingdogslie"isagoodold maxim,anditisgoodadvicetothe reverendcritieoftheCatholicpeople ofIrelandnottostirupsleeping crones,elsehemayfindhimself hoistwithitsownpetard.Thetwo "authorities"fromwhomhe.draws, hisbiassedjudgmentsarediscredited anddisappointedwill-o'-the-wispsof nopolitical,social,or,forthematterofthat,intellectualstanding,theyareworse,theyareapostates, whoprosecutetheirpropagandaof slanderandmisrepresentationwith allthedespairandzealofapostacy. triestheharmonisingofold,bad antagonisms;thedemolitionofsectarianbarriersandthegradual growthoffraternityamongstall classesofthepeasantandcommercialinterestsofthecountry;arepavingthewayforanabsolutedethronementofsectarianisminthe socialandpoliticallifeofIreland. Thietthereverendgentlemanissincereinhis"militantProtestantism,"willbereadilyconcededhim, butifhemustpersistinit,asregards,hishopesanddesiresandanticipationsrearectingthefutureof Catholicismi'nIrelandthereisacertaintyofhisgreyhairsgoingdown insorrowtothegrave.

theVictoriaParkTownHallwas crowdedwithanenthusiasticaudiencewhichbadassembledtowitness theannualdisplayofthepupilsattendingthelocalConventofMercy. Thehallwasverytastefullydecoratedwithpotplantsandscrolls, andthestagewasveryprettyindeed.Fromstarttofinishthe loneprogrammewasgotthrough withoutabitchandtheaudience gavetheyouthfulperformersacontinuedchorusofapplause.Among theaudiencewereseveralpriests,ineludingFathersFagan,(Victoria Park),Smyth,O'Reilly,andGallagheroftheCathedral. Thevariousitemsontheprogrammewere wellrendered. Thelittleinfant girlsgavegreatsatisfactiontothe airingparentsbytheskilfulmannerinwhichtheywentthroughtheir littlepartsandbytheirwellbehavedanddecorousdemeanour.The boyswereenthusiasticallyreceived, whiletheseniorgirlsandsenior boysgaveeveryevidenceofgood andjudicioustraining,andacultivatedpresenceofmindwhichnever seemedtodesertthem.

Thefirstpartoftheprogramme, whichweprintbelow,wasverywell arranged,andcarriedoutjustas well.Thesecondpartwasadrama entitled,"WhittingtonandhisCat," anditisbutstatingafactwhenwe saythateveryoneoftheaudience youngandoldlistenedandobserved withthemostintensesuspenseof mindtoeveryword,andforevery characterawlchangeofscenefrom beginningtoend.Thecharacters wereallwellchosen,andtheysustainedtheirpartswithexceptional credittothemselvesandtheirteachers. Infactfewcouldpossibly expecttoseesuchtalentandinsuch variety,inasmallcommunity,,such asthatofVictoriaPark; yetthe degreeofdramaticskill,andthe coolnessandselfconsciousnessofthe performersinthepopularsuburb weretheadmirationofthelarge audiencethatassembledtodothe goodSistersandtheirpupilshonouronthenightoftheirannualdisplay. Unlikethevariousother schools,theSistersofVictoriaPark reservedthedistributionofprizesfor thedayaftertheconcert,whenthe friendsandadmirersoftheConvent haitanopportunityofwitnessing teallocationofprizesandtheusualmagnificentdisplayofplainand fancyworkdonebytheirpupilsduringtheyear.
