Theannualentertainmentgivenby thestudentsoftheLoretoConvent AdelaideTerracecameoffonTuesdaynight,andwasmostsuccessful fromstarttofinish.Ithadthe distinctadvantages,thatitwasnot toolong,andalsotheitemsselected fordisplaywerejudiciouslyarranged.Thehailwaspackedwithfriends andadmirersoftheConvent,andit --,ak-butbarelystatingafactthatthey allwentawaydelightedwiththeentertainmenttheyhadenjoyed.The choruseswererenderedwithverve andfreshness,andcreatedanexcellentimpression,andincluded"The Snow"(Eiger)and"RobinAdair." ApupilplayedBeethoven's"Sonata J'athetique"charmingly,andavocal solo,"0DivineRedeemer1'(Gounod),wasbeautifullysung. The youngerpupilstookpartinapretty part-song,"TheJapaneseFan," MacKenzie's"Benedictus,"asaviolasolo,andPleyel's"Oeuvre8," forfirstandsecondviolins,received alargeamountofapplause.Decidedlyoneofthebestitemsonthe programmewastherecitation"King RobertofSicily."Inthisthree girlsshowedmarkedevidencesofexlenttuition,thesinginginthe ohurchnearby,whichformssucha strikingfeatureofLongfellow'spoem andwhichbreaksintothestorywith somuchappropriatenessandmelody', beingadmirablyrendered.Another recitationdelightfullygivenwas "'TheMonkandtheBird"(SirAlfredLyall). Withdeepestandmostunfeigned regretwerecordthedeathofoneof Australia'snoblest,mostgenerous, andmostzealouspriests,theVery ReverendB.P.Keogh,V.G. His deathwhichunexpectedlyoccurredon Wednesday,December16th,after ashort,thoughseriousillness, createdquitea shock.and castagloomoverthemane, peopleofeveryclassaadcreedwho hadthepleasureofhisacquaintance inthecityandsuburbs. ThedeceasedVicar-Generaldiedin theveryflowerofyouth,havingbarelyreachedtheageofthirty-four. HewasbornatFuerty,intheCountyofRoscommon.Ireland.Having completedhiseducationinthelocal school,hewassenttotheDiocesan SeminaryoftheImmaculateConception,wherehewongoldenopinionsfromthestudentsandprafessore,andwaseventuallyselectedas theworthyrepresentativeoftheDiocesefortheCollegeofMaynooth. Herehestudiedphilosophy,metaphysics,andtheologyandhavingcompletedabrilliantanddistinguished coursewasordainedfortheDiocese ofPerthin1599.Sincehisarrival inW.A.intheendofthesameyear
iedicaliysuppuratingeversince,as hefrequentlysufferedfromhemorrhage. Notwithstandingtheunpleasantsymptoms,therewasnothing alarminguntillastMondaymorning whenhehadtwoattacksofwhat threeteitedtobeapoplexy. Dr. Haynes,whoattendedhimthroughoutrecommendedhisremovaltothe HospitalofSt:JohnofGod,atSubiaco.TherehecontinuedtoprogressuntilTuesdaymorningwhen thefatalchangesetin,whichbaffledeveryeffortoftheskilleddoctor.TheRev.gentlemanwasconsciousuptothelastmoments,and gavemostminuteinstructionstothe Rev.FathersO'Reilly.andDonogher, whoadministeredhimthelastrites oftheChurch,whichhereceivedwith themostsincere,earnestandpatheticernetion.Oneofhisdyingmessaee.stoFatherO'Reillywas"to bidtheBishopGoodbye,andassure himthathehadgivenhislifefor him." FormonthspastthedeceasedFa-

ThechantingoftheRequiemoffice by'abouteopriestsintheircassocks andsurpliceswasamostimpressive ceremony,andmanyofthoseinthe 'Cathedralheavedsighsofsorrow, andshedabundanttears.Atthe conclusionoftheOfficeaRequiem HighMasswascelebrated. HisLordshipBishopGibneywas presentinstate,andheappeared verymuchaffected.

Thecortegewasavery longone,extendingconsiderablyoveramile.Therailway,linewas crossedattheThomas-streetbridge, andadetourwasmadesothatthe cortegewouldpassinfrontofthe HomeoftheGoodShepherdatLeederville.FatherKeoghhadalways takenakeeninterestinthisinstitution,andhisworkinconnection alwithitwillberememberedbymany. TheSistersoftheGoodShepherd, desiringto,insomewaypaytheir lastrespectstothedepartedpriest requestedthattheprocessionshould passtheHome,andthisrequestwas accededto.Ontheslopingground closetothegatesofthehomeand over-lookingtheroadway'theinmatesoftheHomewereassembledlong beforethefuneralprocessioncameintoview.Theyrealisedthatinthe deathofFatherKeoghtheyhadlost onewhotookthedeepestinterestin theirwelfare,andasthe.hearsecontaining,hismortalremansapproachedtheHome,alargentmberwereto beseenontheirbender'.kneesprayingdevoutly.Atthedatewereas sembledanumberoftheSistersof theGoodShepherdcommunity. Nearingtheplaceofintermentat theprivatereligiouscemeteryatSt. Joseph'sOrphanageagreatmany peoplejoinedintheprocession.At theentrancetotheOrphanageabodyguardofchildrenwasformed, andthehearseproceededthrough thelinesofchildren. Theserviceatthegravesidewas touchingintheextreme.ArchdeaconSmythofficiated,andhe,likeall theotherpriestsandSisters,was greatlyaffected.The"Benedictus" waschantedbythepriestsanda numberofmalevoicesfromthechoir oftheCathedral.

HisLordshiptheBishoppresided atthedisplayanddistributionof prizesattheSt.Joseph'sGirls'Orphanage,Subiaco,onlastTuesday.Theprogrammewasshortand veryacceptable,theaudiencecomprisingtheBishop,theRev.Fathers Verling,Smyth,andDonogher,Mr. andMrs.LongmoreandtheSisters ofMercy,underwhosecontrolthe orphanageisconducted.ThedistributionofprizeswasmadebyMrs Longmore-theBishopdistributing theprisesforChristianDoctrine,and andthespecialprizetothegirlwho foundtheamethyst(stone)which waslostfromhisEpiscopalringin hisrecentaccident,whenhewas injuredbyafallfromthebuggyin whichhehadbeentravelling. Thesingingoftheseniorgirlswas anitemnoteasilyequalled,andnor soonforgotten.Everyvoicewas trueandthetimeandharmonywere verycreditableindeed.Howeverthe clubswinginganddumbbellsbythe girls,wereperhaps.themostskilful andartisticwehavewitnessed,and itisverylittlewonderthatMajor Emmottcouldboasttotheboysin thedifferentschools,thattheywere atleastbutpoorsecondstoSt. Joseph'sGirls.True,therewasa melancholysomethinghangingover thewholeproceedings-owingtothe lamenteddeathoftheVeryRev.Fr. Keogh,andthoughthechildrencli.d not,andcouldnotpracticeforthe threedays'precedingthedisplay,, theiraccuracy,demeanourandartisticskillleftnothingmoretobe'desired.
Beforedistributingtheprizes, ArchdeaconSmythpaidafittingtributeofpraisetothegoodSisters, whohaddolesomuchforthechildrenofthepresentgeneration.They haddonesimilarwork,inPerthfor thepastsixtyyears,andthereare nonesoreadytoadmitthatfactas thosewhoareintheleadingpositionsto-dey,whoreceivedtheireducationfromthePioneerSistersof theMercyOrderinW.A.Pecounselledthechildrentoprofitofthe advantagestheywerereceiving,and heaskedthepeopletobegenerous andsympathetictowardstheirgood

Priortothedistributionofprizes theVeryRev.FatherCoxgavea veryinterestingaddress,inthe courseofwhichhereferredtothe educativemethods,employedbythe Brothersattheschool.Itwasnot, hecontinued,allbooklearningthat wenton"inthesilentbuildingin Ellen-street." Notonlywasthe student'smentalculturetakeninto considerationthere,butthebrothers tookakeenpersonalinterestinthe cultureoftheboy'scharacter.He dweltatsomelengthonthegreat needthatparentsshouldbeinterestedintheirchildren'seducation,contendingthatwithouttheseconding oftheBrothers'effortsbytheparentsinthehome.theschoolingwould notbearfullfruit.Inconclusionhe fil saidthatthepeopleof.Fremantle weretohecongratulatedontheinteresttheywereevincinginthe questionoftheeducationoftheboys -themenofthefuture.
