TheIrishCatholicsettlementin MonroeCounty,Iowa,isaunique Ir.shsettlementofthreeparishes, consistingofMelrose,Georgetown, andWeller,aggregating2,500people, isremarkable,notonlybecauseof therarityofsuchsettlements,but forthesplendidevidenceoftheprogreasandaccomplishmentsinits peoplehavemade,writesMr.Joseph W.Kennyinthe"CatholicColumbian.'Thesettlementcoversfour townships,andtheIrishCatholic elementconstitutes80percent.of thepeople.Thefirstsettlementof Irishinthatlocalitywasin1856, inGe graduallyJrgetownbutthepopulation increasedandtwentyyears laterasecondsettlementwasestablishedinMelrose,whichhassincebecomethecentreofthelargestparish inthatlocality,withacongregation oftwelvehundredmembers.The netnotablefeatureattheMelrose ;settlementisthepublicschool,which isconducteduponabasisthatad mitsofbothCatholicandnon-sectar faneducationinthesameinstitution andinamannerthathasbeenhigh- lysatisfactorytoalldenominations. OnMonday,nighttatNovember, thedeathoccurredoftheRev.W. Cassen,P.P.,Gowran,attheresidenceofhisbrotheratKnocktopher. Co.Kilkenny.Thedeceasedclergymanwasoneofthemostpopular priestsinthedioceseofOssory,and theannouncementofhisdeathhas c.esectwidespreadregret. Father -CassenstudiedatSt.Kevin'sCollege Kilkenny,andwasordainedin1881. HewasappointedDeanoftheCollege,andafterafewyearswastrans tarredtotheCathedralparish, wherehelabouredassiduouslyasa aerate.Hewaspromotedtothe PastoralchargeofGowranabout fouryearsago,andowingtohis earnestlaboursas.apastor,hiswinningandunassumingmanner,and deepreligionsfervour,hewasbelovedbyhisparishioners,whoregard hislossalmostinthelightofaper- sonalbereavement. HisMajesty'sTheatrewaspaced fromfloortoceilingonlastFriday nightontheoccasionoftheanirial presentationofprizeswonduringthe pastyearbythestudentsofthe ChristianBros'College.Thecontinuedsuccessesofthestudents attendingthecollege,bothinlearu!rigandinthefieldofsport,have attractedattentionalloverthe State.Duringthepastyearthe schoolprovidedtheRhodesscholar, andsecuredmanyothersuccesses,includingcreditablepassesintheuniversityexaminations.Intherealm ofathletics,theCollegeearnedthe titleefchampionsecondaryschool,andJohnSavage,astudentatthe College,carriedoffthehonoursat theinter-schoolsportsasthechampionschoolathleteoftheState.

Hewassurethe interestwasaverywellfoundedone. Theschoolbaddoneagreatdealin thewayofteaching,anditalsoheld ahighplaceintheworldofathlet- ics,andhewasdistinctlypleased withthedisplayswhichhehadseen duringtheevening.
