THEBAPTISTS.

ItisclaimedthattheBaptistshave alwaysbeeninfavourofreligious liberty.Itisonlyfairtostatethat thisisatrueboastasfarasEnglandisconcerned.Itisalsofair tostatethattheBaptists,inEngland,havealwaysteeninsuchami noritythattheyhaveneverhadan opportunityofpersecutinanyody. Youneverknowwhatpe>piewilldo untiltheygetthechance.Thereis onlyonecaseofwhichIknowwhere Baptistspossessedtemporalpower. Theparticularswillbefoundinan articlebytheRe:'.BaringGould, called"TheAna'santistsofMunster,"andpublishedinavolumeentitled"HistoricalOddities."MunsterundertheseBaptistswasasink ofiniquityandtyranny.ThemodernBaptistsofcourserepudiate,any connectionwiththeselicentiousfanaticsbutnoBaptistcangreation hasanyconnectionwiththeother. POPULARPROTESTANTHISTORY

PopularProtestanthistoryisformedbycarefullyextractingthepieces whichsuitthecause.Thatiswhy thebettereducatedProtestantis,as arule,themoreliberal.Oneoften hearsthestatementthatthespread ofeducationbreaksthepowerof priestcraft.Ithasdoneso.Ithas brokenthepowerofthepriestcraft ofanintolerantProtestantism.The Britishpublicisbeginningtothink forItself. OurProgressdatesnot fromthe"Reformation,"butexactlyfromtheperiodofCatholicEmancipation.EnglandisnotProtestant to-dayintheoldsenseoftheterm. TheRev.FatherR.H.Benson,M. A.,lecturedintheCityHall,Glasgow,onWednesdaythe13thOct.on "ThefutureoftheCatholicChurch intheBritishIsles." TheVery Rev.CanonMackintoshpresidedand brieflyintroducedthelecturer.FatherBensonsaidattheoutsetthat prophecywasadifficultthing,for wehardlyknewwhatourcountry woulddointhefuture.Fourcenturiesago,whenEnglandwasin,its boyhoodorawkwardage,thesocalledReformationtookplace.The TudorMonarchsdidnotintendthat Protestantismshouldbethereligioa ofthecountry.TheywantedtheL substitutionofnationalauthorityfor, Papalauthority,andnationalism thentooktheplaceofCatholicism. Nationalismdevelopedintocongregationalism,andcongregationalismintoindividualism.Thefirsteventof importanceafterthefoundationof theNationalCouncilwastheevangelicalrevival.ThencametheOxfordmovement,whichcounteracted Evangelicism,andlittlebylittlethe ChurchofEnglandbegantotakeon anaspectofCatholicity.Allthis timetheCatholicChurchhadexisted.Aboutahundredyearsagoit wasamicroscopicbodyinEngland. WiththeestablishmentoftheHierarchyitsteadilygrewuntilEngland wasnowbeinggraduallybrought150', recogniseitsworth.

Inpreviousissuesofthe"Record" weendeavouredtoemphasisethenecessityofgivingthechildrenattendingtheCatholicschoolssomeidea oftheirpersonalresponsibilityin socialandcharitablework.We thinkthattheexigenciesofthe time,thewell-beingoftheChurch, andeventhecountrydemandthe earnestcooperationofeveryCatholic,ifwearetoattaintoanymeasureofsuccessintheworkwhich manifeststhecomprehensivenessof theCatholicprogramme,andwhich, unmistakablyshowsthevitalityof ourcommunity. Comparedwith ourfellowCatholicsinBelgiumand Germany,andwemightperhapsadd llnrland,ourlackofenergyandorganisationispitiableintheextreme.Onlyafewofourpeopleseem atallseizedoftheirdittyandits importanceandthedistinctadvantagethatsocialconsciousnessconfers uponthecommunitytowhichthey belong.Thispervadingapathyis reprehensibleandwehavenodoubt thatthereisineverymemberofthe Catholiccommunityaninstinctive charity-anaturalinclinationtohelp theirfellows,ifonlyitcouldbe gotatandgivenadirection.Even grantingthattheworldisselfish, andthatitsvotariesareenslaved bythesamevicegrantingtoo, thattheprevailingideaatthepreimistobecomeself-centred,

There canhardlybeadoubtaboutthe factthattheattendantcircumstancesofpovertyarerepulsiveifsuddenlysprunguponchildren,justas thefirstvisittoahospitalgenera.lygivesnausea;butiftheyknow thefactstheoreticallyfirst,thesubsequentcontactwiththerealitystimulatestheirambitionofdoingsomethingtohelp.Toreducethemattertopracticeis,ofcourse,difficult.Therecanheverylittlepracticalworkdoneduringschoolhours Occasionally,opportunityoffersas when,forinstance,aCollegeor SchoolChoirorOrchestracouldvisitanorphanageorahomeforthe Door and superannuated,and rouse thespirits of the inmates bystrainsof good music. Oragain,the inmatesofanorphanagecouldbegivenavisittoaschoolasacricket orfootballclub,andentertainedto tea.Oragain,thechildreninthe SecondarySchoolscouldbeinspired withgenerosityenoughtosaveup someoftheirpocketmoneyandcontributealittleweeklyormonthly towardstheexpenseofestablishing abedintheChildren'sHospital.
