Mr.R.G.Walsh,thewell-known Clonmeljournalist,authorof"Tom Moore,"andotherplays,leftClodmelonThursdayforQueenstown,en routetoChicago.Hewasseenoff byalargecrowdoffriendsand well-wishers.Previoustohisdeparture,Mr.WalshwasfetedinDublin andClonmelbyhisfriends,and wasmadetherecipientofmanyvaluableproofsoftheiresteemandregard.Hecarrieswithhimtohis newhoineinAmericaeverygood wishforhisfuturehappinessand welfare.

Theteamslinedoutat3o'clock, andinthefirstdashTipperaryscoredagoal. Tobebriefitwas Thurles'half,fordespiteCork'sdesperateeffortstoeffectalodgmentof theleather,theshortwhistlesaw TomSemple'smenleadingby2 goals,8pointstonil.Onchangeof sidesCorkflasheddown,butthe movementwasbutmomentary.Tipperarykeptbangingaway,pointafterpointfollowinginquicksuccession,tillatlasttheTipperarygoalkeeperinblockingtheball,theleatherswervedandstrikingthepost, reboundedin.Aheartycheerwas given,justtostimulatethevisitors. Hetoldthemhow,whenhewasa youngstudentatMaynoothhewon aprizeforanessayon"TheElizabethanAgeofEnglishLiterature.' Atthedistributionofpremiumshe readhisessaybeforeanassembly whidhincludedanumberofBishops. Mr.SydneyBrookscontriouteshis sixthpaperon"TheNewIreland" totheAugustnumberoftthe"North AmericanReview." Hesaysthat thenineteenthcenturydiditsutmosttoconverttheIrishmaninto anAnglicisedprovincial.Thetwentiethcenturyiswitnessingnationalrevivalofaveryremarkable type:Theessenceof"thenewIreland" isthedeterminationoftheIrishpeopletobuildupanIrishcharacter andanIrishindividualityinanIrish atmosphere.Itisadetermination thatmanifestsitselfinmanyways, politicallyintheSianFeinmovement,economicallyintheindustrial revivalandinthereorganiepitionof agricultureonaco-operativebasis, spirituallyandlinguisticallyinthe GaelicLeague. Ofallthese energising forces the Gaelic League,frommorethanone standpoint,appealstomeasthe mostinterestingandthemostfundamental.

ANIRISHANALOGY.

TheStoryofBulgaria'sTroubles.

Onecannotfailtobestruckby themanypointsof.resemblancebetweenIrelandandBulgaria.They arebothagriculturalcountrieswith undevelopedmineralresourcesthere isverylittledifferenceinareathey havebothhadstormyandcruelhistoriesandtheyhaveatthesame timenearlythesamepopulation, thoughtheBulgarsareincreasing, andtheIrisharenot.Itis,however,muchmoredifficulttogetfrom BulgariatoAmericathanitisto gettherefromIreland.

PEASANTPROPRIETORS.

Bulgariaisalandofsmallfarmers.Therearenolandlords,and, therefore,thereisno"landquestion"theStateistheownerofthe soil,andthefarmerpaystheGovernmentatenthoftheprodueeof thefarm. Everyvillagehas,its common,wherethevillagersgraze theircowsanditsforest,where freefuelcanbeobtained.Thepeoplehavenogreatwealth,andno greatpoverty.Thecountryissupposedtoheina"backward"state, thatis,therearenogoodroads,or railways,nomotorcars,gramaphones,flyingmachines,orpatentmedicines.Neitherhavetheyworkhousesnortradesunionsnorstrikes-ex.eeptwheretheyserveastatepurpose.Theydon'tseemtohavemuch eeyondtheprimitivevirtuesofsobriety,,thrift,andhonesty.

CZARBORIS.

ThecountryhaditsBrianBoru morethanathousandyears,ago. Hewasagreatwarrior,andhis namewasBoris.Hecarvedoutfor himselfakingdomonthebanksof theDanube,andfoundedadynasty; andsitissignificantthatthepresent ruler'sheiriscalledafterhim.AfterBoriscameSimian,whowarred againsttheGreekEmpireandlaid seizetoConstantinople.Hetook thetitleof"CzaroftheBulgerems,"anhistoricalfactwhichhas rotteenlostsightof.

TheGaelicLeagueto-dayboastsof anenrolledmembershipofonehundredthousand,withmorethannine hundredbranchesthroughoutthe country.Itmaintainsfourteenregularcre,gesersandeightytravellingtiaallers.Ithasfoundedsix trainincoleeesfortheeducationof instruetorsinGaelic.Itclaimsto haveemceetheteachingofIrish,intothreeheusandschools.Ithas securedfromtheBoardofNational Educationanacknowledgementof therightofeveryIrishchildineverynationalschooltohetaughtIrishasanordinarysubject.Indistrict.,thatarewhollyorpartlyIrish-speeline,ithassucceededinintroducinganofficialhilipgualprogrammeofinstruction.Ithas madeaknawledgeofGaelicessential toeelidgt.esfigalargemanlierof publicoffices.Atthismomentthere areprobablynatlessthanaquarterofamillionofIrishpeople, childrenandadultslearningIrish. TheGaelicLeagueisoneofthelargestandmostsuccessfulpublishing firmsinthecountry.Itorganises fes'ivy'sandsummerschoolsit printsa,weeklyandamonthlyjournalitholdspubliccontestsand distributesprizes.Onemeetsitsinfluenceeverywhere.Ttmayyetserve asafeederfortheSinnFeinorganisatian;itsanimatingspiritisessentiallytheSinnFeinspirit. Of alltheagenciesthatareworking fortheregenerationofIreland

firmedbytheGreatPowers.Prince Alexander.fBattenbergwebtlelast ruler,buthistenureoftnethrose wasneververyisecure,andintheeau hewasforcedtoabdicate.Thee, afterthecrownhadbeenrefusedby aDanishPrince,itwasultimately acceptedbyFerdinand.

THEPRESENTRULER.

PrinceFerdinandwenttoBulgaria ignorantoftheLanguageofthe country(whichisasortofRussian),andunacquaintedwithitscustomsandpeople,buthehassirceededinbecoming"moreBulgarian thantheBulgars."Heisacourteougandagracious?Priamthesonof agreatAustriannobleman,andthe grandsonofaKingofFrance.His consort,whocomesoftheBourbon stock,is,likehimself,aCatholic, buttheyhaveseenfittohavetheir sonandheir"converted"tothe GreekChurch,whichistheestablishedChurchofthecountry. This actofpolicyandthefactthatthe youngPrincewasbornonvulgarian soilandisnamedafterthegreat historicalheroofthepeople,gives thedynastyaholdosthesentiment ofthenation.

SUREOFHISSUBJECT".

Itisevidentthatinthepresent greatcrisisthePrinceissureofhis subjects.Itisnotalittleremarkablethathehasalwaysmaintained themostfiiendlyrelationswithTurkey,andthatthequestiontofthevalidityofhiselection,whichwas keptafivebyRussia,wasneverraisedbytheSultan.Heham,however,beencold-shoulderedbythisbrotherrulersandslightedbythediplomaticbody,

Everymanoffullagehasavote, andeverymanoverthirtywhocan readandwriteiseligibleforelectiontoParliament.Thereisnoaristocracy,nosecondChamber,no titles,andnodecorations.Educationisfreeandcompulsory,and thereis'perfectreligiousfreedom.

LOSTNATIONALITY.

AfterthismediaevalflourishBulgariahadarunofill-luck.They tellfouloftheRussians,becamea rovinceoftheGreekEmpire,were subjecttoServia,andfinally,inthe Fourteenthcenturycameunderthe heeloftheTurks.TheTurkishmethodofdealingwithtroublesome subjectsisdrastic.Indiscriminate slaughteristheirrecipeforinsarrectionandwhentheBulgariansattemptedalittlerisingin1876the CircassiansandtheBashi-Bazouks eratygide:1yaccountedforsomethingHet16,000defencelesspeasants. Scoresofvillageswerewipedout, andtheworldrangwithtalesof "Bulgarianatrocities."Therewas universalrejoicing,therefore,when theRussiansenteredthecountry, drovenuttheTurks,andbythe TreatyofSanStefanoerectedBulgariaandEasternRoumeliaintoan independentstate.underRussianprotection.

ERECTEDINTOAPRINCIPALITY.

ThePowers,however,refusedto ratifythisTreaty,'andcalleda,congressatBerlinwhichsettledterms ofpeaceinthefamoustreatyof thatname.Bulgaria,semi-independent7wasplacedunderthesuzeraintyoftheSultan,landwasseparated fromEasternRoumelia.Shewas givenaParliamentandarulerto beelectedbythepeopleandcon-

THECHANCEOFWAR.

IfFerdinandc,nrepudiatetheovrrlorshipoftheSultan,andFrancis Joseph'canannexterritorywherehe hadonlyadministrativeauthority, whatistopreventNicholasfrom sendingthisyearwarvesselsthrough theDardanelles?Thisisthequestionthatwillexercisedthemindsof Britishstatesmen.Thirtyyesrsago itwasaseriousmatter,about

THEPRACTICEOFMEDITATION.

Onthisheaditisofthefirstimportancethatacertainlineshould beallottedeverydlyformeditation onthethinesofeternity.Nopriest canomitthiswithoutbeingguilty ofseriousnecligenceandtothedetrimentofhissoul.WritingtoEagenePI,formerlyhispupilbutat thetimeRomanPontiff,themost holyAbbot.Bernard,franklyandurgentlyadmonishedhimnevertoomit hisdailymeditationondivinethings onanypretextofthegreatandmanycaresthataccompanythesupreme apostolate.Hecontendedthathe

wasjustifiedinthis,thusenumeratingmostprudentlytheadvantagesof thepracticeMeditationpurifiesthe source,thatis,themind,fromwhich itsprings.Thenitgovernstheaffections,directstheacts,corrects theexcesses,regulatestheconduct, bringspurityandorderintothelife ofhimwhopracticesit;finallyit confersknowledgebothofhumanand divinethings.Meditationseparates whatisconfused,bringstogether whatisdivided,collectswhatisscattered,revealswhatishidden,investigateswhatisthetruth,examineswhatisprobable,discoverswhat isfalseandfictitious.Meditation ordainswhatistobedone,reflects onwhathasbeenperformed,so thatnothingremainsinthemindeitherincorrectorneedingtobecorrected.Inprosperityithasthe senseofcomingadversity,whenadversitycomes,itcomesunfelt,and ofthese,thelatteristhefruitof fortitude,theformerofprudence.

Thissummaryoftheadvantages whichmeditationisdesignedtosecureforus,alsoteachesandadmonishesusnotonlyhowsalutaryitis ineveryway,buthowverynecessary.

ITSNECESSITYANDADVANTAGES.

ForAugustandvenerableasare thevariousofficesofthepriesthood ithappensthatthosewhohaveto performthemfrequentlyandfamiliarlycometotreattheminaway notconsonantwiththeirdignity. Hencethesoulgraduallylosingits fervour,thewaytocarelessnessis madeeasy,withconsequentdistaste forthemostsacredthings. Then again,thepriestisobligedtobein dailyintercourseasitwereinthe midstofawickedpeople,sothat frequentlyevenintheveryperformanceofhisworkofPastoralcharityhehasreasontofearthesecret wilesoftheserpent.Andarenot evenreligiousheartspronetobe soiledbythedustoftheworld?It isapparent,then,thatthereexists a ereatandureentnecessitytoreturndailytothecontemplationof eternitythatthemindandthewill derivingfreshstrengththerefrom, maybefortifiedagainsttheallurementsoftheworld.-Moreoveritbehoovesapriesttobepossessedofa certainfacilityofrisingtoanddwellingonheavenlythings,foritishis dutytorelish,todeclare,topersuadeheavenlythings,andtosoorder hislifeaboveordinaryaffairsthat whateverhedoesinthefulfilmentof hissacredofficehemaydoitaccordinatoGodundertheinstinctand theguidanceoffaith.Nowthis habitofmindandthisasitwere, nativeunionwithGod,isgreatly furtheredandprotectedbythepracticeofdailymeditation-atruth whichmusthesoplaintoevery thoughtfulmanthatitisunnecessarytodwelllongeronit.

THECONSEQFENCESOFNEGLECTINGIT..

Aconfirmation,albeitapainful one,ofallthisistobefoundin thelivesofthosepriestswhomake lielitofmeditationondivinethings orhaveopenantipathyforit.See thosemeninwhomthesenseof Christ,thatmostestimablegift,languishesentirelyoccupiedwithearthlythings,followingvanity,babblingoftrifles,performingtheirsacreddutiesnealieently,coldly,perhapsevenunworthily Once,while thegiftofthesacerdotalunction wasfreshuponthem,theyusedto preparetheirsoulsdiligentlyfor thepsaltery,toseekoutthemost favourabletimeandplace,farfrom

thedinoftheworld,toendeavour topenetratethesenseofthedivine words,topraiseandweep,andexult topourouttheirspiritwiththe Psalmist.Butnowhowchangedare theyfromofold **'.-And thushardlyanythingisleftinthem oftheirformerardentdevotiontowardsthedivinemysteries.How pleasantwerethosetabernaclesin thedaysgoneby Howtheheart rejoicedtobepresentinthecircleof thetableoftheLord.,andto`call others,andstillothers,thither! THEEXCUSEOFMINISTERIAL WORK.

Amongstthosewhoareloathor whoneglecttoconsiderintheir hearts(Jer.XII,11)therearesome whodonothidetheirconsequent Povertyofsoul,butratherexcuseit onthepleathattheyareentirely givenuptothebustleofministerial lifeforthemanifoldutilityofothers.Buttheyaremiserablydeluded.Forwhenpriests,notaccustomedtoconversewithGod,speak ofHimtoothers,orgivecounsel ontheChristianlife,theyareutterlydestituteofthedivineimpulse andtheirpreachingoftheGospel seemstobeasitwerehalfdead. THEIMITATIONOFCHRIST.

Forthem,andforallofyou,belovedsons,letthisexhortationof Ours,whichisthatofChristthe Lord,takedeeprootTakeyeheed, watchandpray(MarkXIII,33).But especiallyinthepracticeofpious meditationlettheeffortsofallbe engaged,letthesoulwinconfidence fromfrequentrepetitionofthewords -Lordteachushowtopray(Luke, XT,it.Thereisonespecialreason whichshouldhavespecialweightin urgingustopracticemeditation thewealthofcounselandvirtuederivedtherefromforthatmostdifficultofalltasks;thepropercareof souls. St.Charlesinoneofhis pastoralsdwellsonthisinamannerworthyofbeingremembered:-

"Understandbrethren,thatnothing issonecessaryforallecclesiasticsas mentalprayer,proceeding,accompanyingandfollowingallouractions. IwillsingandIKillunderstand, saystheProphet(Ps.C.2).Ifyou administertheSacrament,0brethrenmeditateonwhatyouaredoit!gifyoucelebrateMass,meditate onwhatyouareofferingifyouase recitingthepsalmsmeditateto whomandwhatyouarespeaking ityouareengagedinthecareof souls,meditatebywhosebloodthey limebeenwashed." Preachingrecentlythefirstsermon ofhiscourseon"OurHiddenGod" atFarm-streetChurch,FatherBernardVaughansaidhedidnotsea howitwaspossibleforanEnglishmantoreadthetruehistoryofhie countryunderearlyTudorsorthe Normans,orinAnglo-Saxonoreven Britishdays,withoutbeingfullysatisfiedthattheblasphemousanddangerous"thingcalledtheMasswas tothereligionheldbyoldEnetand whatthesoulwastothebody.

Therewas,perhaps,nothingmore strangeinthehistoryofProtestantismitselfthanthefactthatasectionofit,andasection,perhaps themostdevout,aswellaslearned, nowboastedthatithadrecovered boththeMassandthemassing priest. InsidethatveryChurch whichcalledCatholicsnaughtyneon'esforofferingHolyMass,therewas tobefoundnotMassonly,butgeservationoftheBlessedSacrament, ConfraternitiesoftheBlessedSacrament,and-HeavensavethemarkprocessionsoftheBlessedSacrament. Itwouldseemthatthose whomthelawof'_'Englandcalledt'rotestantswereagreedamongthemselvesinonepointonly,andthat wasintheircondemnationofthe ChurehCatholicandRoman.Ifevertherehadbeepasplendidotrj portunityforProtestantismmaking agrandstandforunityinsomeone doctrineatleast,litopportunity wasofferedduringthePan-Anglican Cop!resq,andyet,eventhen,when goadandclevermenfromallparts oftheempiremetononecommon religiousPlatferm,theycouldonly agreetoagreeinnothing,andso theCongresspassedwithnothing donetomakeiteasierforanoutsidertoknowwhatProtestantismor ifyouwill,Anglicanism,was,or whatProtestantorAnglicansbelieved. 'FatherVaughanarguedthatitwas difficultforhimtounderstandwhy ProtestantswhotoleratedprocessionsoftheBlessedSacramentamongcertainsectionsoftheirown Churchshouldprofessquiteanextraordirr.ryintoleranceofthemin theCatholicChurch. Wasitnot allmisplacedzeal,andwoulditnot Possiblyhewiserfirstofalltocheck whatwassowrongintheirown Churchbeforeprotestingaeainsta practiceofaChurchwithwhichthey hadnothingtodo? Theactof idolatryofwhichtheProtestantAlliancecomplainedwasnolesswickedinsidethanoutidethewallsofa Church.Alas,thefactwas,Protestantsdidnotverymuchmind whattookplaceintheirownChurch huttheydidverystronglyobject towhattookplaceintheCatholic Church. Totheworldallover whatreallymatteredwasthatancompromisingandterribleenergising thingcalledtheRomishChurch.It wouldnetdieanditrefusedtobe killednay,itwaslivingInthe20th century.Amorevigorousandag,-

gressivelifethaninanyofthenineteencenturiesprecedingit,andhe feltthatinWesternEuiropetheday wasnottremendouslyfaroffwhen withagnosticismshewoulddivide thereallythoughtfulmind.

FewwouldrecogniaetheHolyFatherfromhisvariousphotds.The express.onofthecountenanceisnowne.e'serfectlyportrayed.Thatexpressionisoneofwonderfulbenignitymingledwithasoftandpleasingmelancholy. Oneinstinctively feelsthathehassufferedmuch,and oneseesthegod-likeeffectofsufferingbirneforChristinthegentle andplacidcountenance.

ForhespokeofIreland's faith,whichhesaidwasIreland'sglorythatthatfaithhasalwaysbeennot onlypreservedbuthasalwaysbeen' firmandsplendidwithasplendour thathasshoneoverthewholeearth; witnesstheUnitedStatesofAmerica,whereIrelandhasbuiltupamagnficentChurch.ThusfartheHoly Father'smannerwassubduedandhe spokesoslowlyanddistinctlythat withaslightknowledgeofItalian onecouldeasilyfollow.Butwhen hebegantodescribethepricethat Irelandpaidforherfidelitytothe Faith,theHolyFather'smannerbecameanimated,hiscountenancefull ofexpression,andhiswordswere emphasisedbygestures.Theeffect onsensitiveIrishheartswas.like magic. Eyesbegantofillwith tears.Thesuppressedemotionwas painful,butmixedwithdespjoy-a minglingpainandjoywhichcanonlybeproducedbythesupernatural. Whenhespokeofthefuturetriumph oftheChurchheseemedforamomentasifhesawintothehiddenfutureandutteredthesentencewhich issuretothrillthebosomofevery childofSt.Patrick:-via.,thatIrelandwouldhaveaspecialsharein thattriumph. Hethenspokeof theEucharisticCongress,which broughtagreatjoytohisheart, andtheEucharisticCongress,hedeclared,wasmadepossibleand broughttohappyissuebytheIrish.

WhentheHolyFatherhadfinitlied thePent-upfeelingsintheheartsof allbrokeforthandatthehearty cheerstheI-1)1yFathersmiled.From thismomentthesadness,whichwas observeleinhisfeaturesdisappeared,andahentheIrishpiperinfull costume,camewalkinginplayingthe pipeshewesutterlytakenbysurprise,andagreeablyforhisfacewas lightedupwithanamusedandhappysmile.Cheeraftercheergreeted hisHelinessashedepartedwhenthe feelingswhichhadhithertobeenre: pressedfoundexpressionin"vivas" forthegreatFatheroftheFaithful whohadbestowedonhisTrishflock averygreatfavourindeedwhenhe manifestedtotheworldhisspecial esteemandloveforthechildrenof St.Patrick.

Thequietandunromanticpeopleof theprettysuburbofVictoriaPark weretouchedonthequickafew nightsagobytheunprovoked,unwarrantedandunexpectedattackof thecounterpartoftheEasternorange pup-oneWilke.Thelatterhasbeen whiningandhowlingandbarkingfor thepastweekattheCatholicbogey on"theotherside,"whichstares andstaggersandobstructshimin hisproclamationandprosecutionof sectarianrancour.Inthenameof Orangemen,forthesakeandglory ofthe"YellowPup"whichbarks, "buthasnotyetlearnedtobite," thisChristianpietistcallsuponthe 100,000strongandboldoftheOrangeilkofAustraliatorallyupand standtogether,forthegloryofthe protestantcause,andforthesuppressionorannihilationoftheCatholicChurch.Theyhadbeencalled ordubbedhecried,"theyellow pups,"anditistimetheyshowed theCatholicstheyhadgottheir teethandtheymeanttousethem.

Toolonghadtheyremainedinactive. ToolatehadtheydiscoveredthePowerandinfluenceoftheChurchagainstwhichtheyhaveprotestedin nouncertainvoice-butitmustbe confessedwithfutileconsecaences. Thisintimidatory haranguewasfaithfully,publishedbecause,ofcourse,itwasapublic pronouncement,madebyablatant bigot,andbecauseithitatTHE Churchwhichisthefruitfulsourceof thecharacteristicenvyofthe"West Australian"Proprietary.Hada lessvirulent,'lessviolent,lessslanderous,andwithallessignorantaddressbeenmadebyaCathlie-cleric orlayman--thisunscrupulousantagonistofCatholicitywouldfeelitits dutytorefuseitpublicationand rightlytoo.intheinterestsofdecent journalism; butbecauseitwasa blowfortheProtestantcauseitgot morewelcomeandplaceinthepopulardailythanifitweredivine.

Howmuchmoregravely,maturely andwiselydoestheCatholicChurch retainthename"sacrament"becauseitunderstandsthatthisword fitsmostexactlythecharacterof BaptismandtheEucharistandothersacredmysteriesofthesameclass andbecauseitseesthatTertullian, Cyprian,Lactantius,Ambrose,Jerome,Augustineandallthosewho straightwayfromtheverybeginning oftheChristianname,wrote,in Latin.uponthesacredmysteriesof ourfaithusedthissameterra.But nowquiteenoughhasbeensaidaboutthename,letusproceedtothe natureandthepowerofasacrament.

Catholicwritersteach,withsoperfectanagreement,andhavealways taughtthattheSacramentsofthe newlawarecertainmeansandinstrumentsofourjustification,that thisisprovenevenbythetestimonyofouradversaries.Calvinin thefourthbookofhis"Institutions"chap.14th,section14thspeaks thus,-"WithgreatconsensusofdoctrinetheSophisticalSchoolmenhave handed,,downandtaughtthatthe sacramentsofthenewlawjustify andconfergrace,providedwedo notinterposetheobstacleofastate ofmortalsin.Nowitisimpossible toexpresshowdestructive,howpestilent,isthisopinion,andsomuch themoreasitisprevailedovera largepartoftheworldduring,many -precedingcenturies,causingimmense losstotheChurch."Thoseare hissentiments,andasyouseehe bearsthiswitness,althoughaccordingtohiscustomhecallstheCatholictheologianssophistsandthe faithoftheChurchaplagueanda causeofdestruction.Yethecould notdeny,thereisagreatagreement indoctrineamongstallCatholics andthatthisourdoctrineflourished for,mane,centuriesoveralargepart oftheglobewhileontheother handwemaymostjustlyandtruly sayofthemselvesthatthereisnothingancientorofanypermanent standingamongstthem,nothingcer-

The1,ricpoets'ofScotland formac)nstellationinwhichthe surpassin4brillianceofonestar,RobertBurns,throwstherestbycomparisonintoobscuritybutIrelands areagalaythatowesitscombinedlustretothealmostequalcontributionsoftheindividualsthat composeitsmultitude.Ifanattemptweremadetoarrangein'an orderofmeritthemanylyriststo whomIrelandowesitsvolumesof songs,itwouldbedifficulttosay whatplaceinit,thoughitoughtto beahighone,shouldbeassigned toMr.ThomasMoore,thd'sweet singeroftheIrishmelodies.Yet ofthelargenumberofpoemsthat comeunderthetitleofhisIrish melodies,onlyafewhavetheunmistakeableringofspontaneityandsincerety.Manyofthemcontaininternalevidencethatincomposing themtheauthorfeltthathewasengagedinatasknotaltogethercongenialthathesoughtbyluxuryof ornamenttomakethempassfor morethantheywereintrinsically worth.Thecausesthatwouldacsountfortheunequalvalueofthe varioussongsincludedinthecollectionofMoore'smelodiesmaybe found,partlyinthewiderangeof poeticsubjectsthat,accordingto contract,weremeantto,beembraced

bythem,andpartlyinthepersonal characteroftheauthorhimself.

Itwasin1807,whenMoorewas28 yearsold,thatheacceptedacommissionfromaLondonpublisherto adaptsuitableverses,andthereby givearenewedleaseoflifetothe nativemelodiesofIrelandthatfor wantofsupportandallianceof wordsseemedindangerofdyingout Formuchofthisunderstanding Moorewasspeciallywellqualifiedby hispoetictalentandmusicalattainments.Themeasureofsuccess attributedtohimbyhiscontemporariesappear.tohavebeenlarger thanisallowedhitabythepresent generationofhiscountrymen.Coleridgesaid,whenheheardthenew poemssungbytheirauthor,thatthe musictwinedroundthewordsand eivelopeithemlikethehoneysuckle. Itismorethandoubtful,however, ifanymanlessgiftedthanShakespearecouldgivetruthfulandadequateexpressiontothewiderange feelings,frompensivegravityto thewidejollity,andfromdespairto reelessdefif,nce,embodiedinthenationalairsofapeoplesoemotional astheIrish.Whenstillalad,ThomasMocr$hadbeeninitiatedinto thesocietyofthosedisloyalIrish whseseditio-lsschemesculminated intherebellionof1798,andmight havesharedtheirfatehadhenot followeda wisewarningtowithdrawfromthemintime.Inhis 21styearhesettledinLondon.Almostimmediatelyonhisarrivalhe becamethepettedfavouriteofthe mostselect.societythere,andfor halfacenturythereafterhelivedthe lifeofsocialandintellectualenjoyment,whichbestpleasedhissybariticnature.InoneofhisIriehmelodies,beginning,"Ohblamenot thebardifhefliestothebowers," itmaybeshrewdlysuspectedthat, inexposingandexcusinganimaginarybard'sdefectionfromthepatrioticcause,heishimselfkneelingin theconfessional.ItishardlypossiblethatavoluptarylikeMoore

couldhavefelt,oreveninpoetic frenzyhavefeigned,thepassionof self-renunciationandpatrioticdevotionwhichsurgesthrougheveryline ofthepoetMangan's"DarkRosaleen."Insteadofsuchecstacy,we havein"Theminstrelboytothe warhasgone,"anexampleofinsanityyieldingtoanill-consideredimpulse,andthenindulginginwhat seemstobeanincreditablestrainof theatricalrant. These,andothers oflikeintent,arewhatthecounterfeitinspiteofallitsartisticgilding,istothesterlingcoin.Tothe dangerousandgiddyheightsthataffordsterndelighttothoseonly whosehearts,possessedbythepat- riot'spassion,haveroomforinotheraffection,Moose'scommissionobligedhimtopaymorethanone half-heartedvisit.Butitwasinthe plainoftherichandvariedenjoyments,wherehisownlifewashap pilyspent,thathefoundthethemes forthebestandtruestofIrishmelodies.ToMooretherewasabundanceandvarietyenoughofmaterialtocompletethegreaterpartof hisundertakingtriumphantly,forhe hadtodrawupontheexperiencesof apeoplewhomhecouldaddressas "Erin!thetearandthesmilein thineeyes
