OnceagainDublinhasshownAll Irelandthatitisheartandsoul withtheGaelicLeague.Thegreat processionthattookplacethrough thestreetsofthecapitalrecently amidsttheheartyapplauditsofits citizenswasanhonourtotheGaelicLeaguersofthecity.Inthe processionmarchedthousandsofthe youngIrishIrelanders,whoarebeingtrainedundertheChristianBrothers,followingthemwerethe Branches,oftheLeagueinandaroundDublin. TheG.A.A.turned outinforce,aswellastheA.O.H. andtheNationalForresters.The temperancesocietieswerestrongly represent(d.Infactallthevarious Nationalandpoliticalorganisations joinedhandswiththeGaelicLeague. DearMr.Dulanty,-Inreplyto yourmostinterestingletter,Ibeg tosaythatitisagreatgratificationtoknowthatsomanyCatholic youngmeninagreatmercantile centrelikeManchesterareableto economisetheirtimesowellthat theycandevotethemselvestothe pursuitofstudiessowellcalculated toraisethemonahighmoraland intellectualplainofthought.They havestrucktherightplanforthe promotionofsuchseriousstudiesby reducingtheirreadingtolectures andessaysforitisdifficulttoread withoutanobject,andthereisno objectsostimulatingastheambitiontomakeothersacquaintedwith whatwehaveread. Andveryfewmindsare proofagainsttheseductionofthis classofliterature,becausesofew arepreparedbyasolidtrainingin Philosophicalprinciplestorecognise error,nomatterunderhowspecious aformitmightheconcealed. Hence,IthinkthatayoungCatholic'sstudiesshouldbelimitedto thegreatmasters,suchasMilton, Dante,Shakespeare,Wordsworth andtosuchpoetsandessayistsin moderntimesashavewrittenfor theedification,notthedestruction, oftheirfellow-beings.Foritmust alwaysberememberedthattruecul-

O'Connellrefusedtotaketheoath ofsupremacy,wasrejectedatthe BaroftheHouseofCommons,but wasreturnedtriumphantlyasecond timebytheindependentelectorsof Clare.Irelandwasnowonthevery vergeofarvolution. AtMullaghmastnearDublin,the peoplecrownedtheliberatorwitha capmadelikeanancientIrishcrown.
Allthosegiganticdemonstrationsabou40innumberwereheldwithouttheslightestaccidentorthe smallestinfringementofthepeace. Hehadcarriedthepeopleuptothe brin:13ftheprecipice,buthowto bringthemsafelydownwasmore thanevenhecouldaccomplish. lido completelywashe'impressedwith theconvictionthattheMinistry mustyieldtothearrayofanalmustunanimouspeoplethatin1843 hesolemnlypledgedhimselfthatRepealwouldbeanACCOMPLISHED FACTIN6MONTHS.
AmeetingwasannouncedathistoricClunterfforSunday,Oct.5, andonthedaybeforetheGovernmentissuedaProclamationforbidding thea-a.mbly.Theriskwasaformidasleone,forresponsiblemento talie,titPeelwishingtobreakthe spellofO'Connell'smagicinfluence overthepeopleanddiscredit-him, waspreparedfarmassacre.Messengersweres,ntouttoIntercept thethousandsthatwerecomingfrom allpartsofIreland,andbloodshed wasaverted.
HisPROSECUTIONandthatof someof adherentswasthenext importantevent.Hewasconvicted byapackedDublinJuryanddraggedtojailasacriminalconspirator, buttheHouseofLordssubsequently reversedthedecision.Thosemonths inRichmondjailprovedthedeath knellofhispower.Hewasnowan oldmanweakenedinhealth,and thatbuoyancywhichhadhitherto carriedhimovereveryobstaclenever againrevived.
