AresolutionwasproposedandcarriedattheGalwayExhibitioncallingupontheIrishLandlordsfor theircooperationintheindustrial movement.

ThepilgrimagetoRomeorganised bytheC.Y.M.SocietyleftDublinfor theEternalCity.Itsdeparturewas madethe,occasionofunprecedented enthusiasminthecity.

ThePrizeListsoftheintermediate examinationsarepublished,andrevealthegrowingsuccessoftheCatholicSchools,NorthRichmondst., Dublinheadtheboys'list; and theSt.LouisConvent,Monoghan, isattheheadofthegirls'schools.

Portumna,Thursday,Sept.17. Mr.Bailey,EstatesCommissioner, andMessrsStewartandHogan,Inspectors,havebeenhereforthepast twodaysengagedinmakingasettlementv4iththeplantersonthe ClanricardeestateundertheEvicted TenantsAct.Theentireplanters onthepropertyinthisParishhave practicallyagreedtoacceptthe compensationoriginallyofferedby theCommissioners,andhavesigned agreementstothateffectinthepresenceoftwowitnesses.Fourofthe numberhavesignedtoacceptfarms toheprosidedbytheCommissioners believedtoheinWestmeath.Itis expectedthattheplanterswillleave withinthenextthreemonths.

The"WineTradeReview,"draws attentiontoonefeatureoftheiveentlyissuedInlandRevenuereport, inreferencetotheconditionofthe homedistilleryandbrewingtrades lastyear.Althoughthehomeconsumptionofspiritsshowsaslight decreaseonthefollowingyear, factwhichtemperanceadvocatesfill notregret,thereisaconsiderable andapparentlysteadyincreaseinthe

Theceremonyofblessingthewatersinconnectionwiththeopening oftheherringfishinginGalwayBay wasperformedbymembersofthe Dominicanclergyrecently,twoof whom,RevFatherMacDonald,0.P., andRev.FatherHolohan,O.P.,with Bro.Alphonses,proceededouttothe bayinaprocessionofdecorated boats,andprayerswererecited,the fishermenrespondingaloud.Alarge numberofpeoplewatchedtheinterestingceremony.

TheEstatesCommissionersgave noticeoftheirintentiontoacquire compulsorilyundertheEvictedTenantsAct233a.2r.37p.intheBaronyofFermoy,Co.Cork,onthe estateofMr.S.Q.W.P.Wilstead, and350a.lr.23p.intheBaronyof SmallCounty,Co.Limerick,onthe estateofMr.Jos.H.Gubbins.

Inconnectionwiththeexpected saleofthetownholdingsatHospital,/CountyLimerick,itwasdecided atameetingofthetowntenantsto writetoLordKenmarerequesting thatthetownparkshouldbehandedovertotheCommissionersfor distributionamongstthoseoccupiers whohavenolandattachedtotheir houses.Itwasalsodecidedtotake stepstoenablethetenantstoget thebenefitofthesaleofanygrazing landintheparish.

ThesurrenderofSavoyandNice toFrance,againstwhichhehadvotedintheItalianParliament,stirredGaribalditoabreachwiththe Government,andtotakepartinthe expeditionwhichwashasteningto helptherevoltin,Sicily.WelandedinMay1860with1050triedcomrades,ontheSiciliancoastnear Marsala,andwithinafewmonths havingunderhiscommand,amilitia ofonlyabout4000men,hesucceededingivingfreedomtoallSicily andinconqueringtheNeapolitan army,whichnumbered25,000men, with48guns,andwassupportedby eightwarvessels.Heevencrossed overtoCalabria,inthebeginningof August,andcouldasearlyasSeptember7thenterNaplesvictoriously.Then,however,throughintriguesofeverykind,theystripped himofhispositionofDictator,and inducedhimonOctober31sttoresignhisauthorityintothehandsof VictorEmmanuel,who,atalltimes, ahamelesslyusedthemadoldman, aslongasitwastohisadvantage tohaveGaribaldi'sactionswarranted,butimmediatelyrepudiatedhim ifGaribaldientangledhimincomplicationswithEuropeandiplomacy. Poor,andwiththerenunciationof everyrewardanddistinction,Garibaldi,afterbehadconqueredtwo kingdoms,wentbacktohisrocky islandandresumedthecultivation ofhismaizeandcabbage.

AftaFhehadmadeacircuitinthe Sprint!of1862throughUpperItaly, toorganisethereadefensivemovement,afterthemodeloftheGerman,andthenagainhadexperiencedvexationfromtheGovernment, whichaccusedhimoftheintention ofmakingafreecorpsexpeditionagainstWesternTyrol.Garibaldi allowed'himselftobewonoverby thepartyofactiontoorganisea revoltinSicily,inordertoremove thenceasabase,inahalf-peaceful, halfwarlikemarch,pastNaplesto Rome,whichtheItalianGovernmentinvaindesiredtoprevent. Buttheattemptmiscarried.On

August1st,Garibaldiwithabout 800volunteerslandedntCorleone, waspursuedbytheRoyaltroops, andon1stSeptemberentangledin anactionatAspromonte,inwhich liehimselfreceivedahislletinthe legandoneintheankle,andwas takenprisoner.Hiswoundinthe footexcitedconsiderableanxiety. yetwascuredlateron,andafterthe kinghadpardonedhimandhiscompanions,andGaribaldihimselfhad returnedtoCaprera. However,thenoisyadulationwhich wasofferedhimonhisjourneyto England,intheSpringof1864, wentwithsuchstrengthtothe goodman'shead,thathebelieved himselfspeciallycalledtoprocure forhisfatherlandunitywithRome asitscapital,sothathewasready tofalla.victimtotheinducements ofMazziniandtherepublicanparty, especiallyas,inthecampaignof 1866,withhisfreecorps,atthefoot oftheAlps,hesecurednoresult worthmention.Thereforeheallowedhimself,asearlyasthesummer of1867tobeinducedtoundertake aneweffortagainstRome.Hewas itistrueseized,intheneighbourhoodoftheRomanfrontier,and transportedbacktoCaprera,but wasabletoescapethenceinafisherboat,andtolandintheStates oftheChurch,whereheplacedhimselfattheheadoffreecorpsassembledbyhissonMenotti,andatthe endofOctoberobtainedavictory overthePapaltroopsatMonteRotondo.Ontheotherhandfighting againstasuperiornumberofFrench andPapaltroopsheexperienceda completeoverthrowandinhiseight fellintothehandsoftheItalian troopsatFiglini.Attheendof Novemberhewasagainbroughtto Caprera,andthere,withhissons, keptundertheclosesurveillanceof shipsofwar,tohinderhimfrom anyactionthatmightleadtotrouble.Hehasthereemployedhisleisure,tryinghishandatauthorship, gettinghisson-in-lawtowritedown historyeshehasdiscoveredithe publisheditinratherrudeandillcomposedvolumes. FatherO'Reillyonrisingtorespond,saidtherewasjustoneremark,andonlyonehewishedto makeinregardtoMr.Gugeri's speech.Hewishedtoreturnthanks toMr.GugerifortheeloquentmannerinwhichhespokeofthemissionaryspiritinIreland,andthehigh tributehepaidtotheIrishmissionarypriesthood.Asoneoftheleast ofthebrethren,hewishedtoreturn hismostsinceregratitudetoMr. Gugeriforthenoblemannerin whichhespoke.Inreferencetothe presentationtheRev.Fathersaid: Hewishedtomakeafewremarks which'hethoughtthepresentoccasioncalledforandtemandedofhim. TheReverendFatherMorrissaid therewasnoonemorepleasedthan he,thatFatherO'Reillywasamongstthemagain,wellandstrong,and hewasdelightedtohepresentat thismanifestationofsympathyand respecttowardshim.Infacthe couldnothelptakingtohimself somepartofthehonourconferred onFatherO'Reilly,becausealthough heknewtheyalladmiredFather O'Reilly'sexcellentqualitiesas aman,yetheknewthatitwasbecausehewasagoodpriestthey wishedtohonourhim.Everyword utteredbythepreviousspeakerswas expressiveoftheirmostsincereadmirationfortheIrishpriesthood. Hefeltsurethattheirexpressionof goodwilltowardsFatherO'Reilly wouldgivehimrenewedcourageto persevereinhisgoodworks,and wouldconsolehimwiththethought thatalthoughhehadleftmanydear friendsbehindintheoldland,yet hehadfriendsastreeandloyalin this,thelandofhisadoption.He wishedtothankMrs.Smithonbe halfofthecompanyforthegenerousmannerinwhichsheco-operated,toenablethemtomakethe presentationtoFatherO'Reillyin themannermostacceptabletohim. TheGovernmentandthe Opposition.

OneofthelatestofficialannouncementsinthepoliticsofW.A.isthat theStateParliamentwillbeformallyopenedonTuesdaythe10thof November,andthatthePremierexpectsthesessiontobesoshortthat Parliamentwillbeproroguedbefore theChristmasholidays.Theproro- guingofParliamentatsuchatime andafterdealingasweunderstand theymeantodealwithonlywelldefinedandnoncontentiousmatters ispurelyspeculative.Thestrength oftheGovernmentaftertherecent electionsisnotsufficienttoenable ittousethe"gag"andtherule absolute.The"brutalmajority" astheLabourPartysarcastically characterisedit,hasnotcomeback totheGovernmentbenches.Their numericstrengthisverypainfully lessened,whiletheLabourPartyhas developedintoacompact,strongand vigorousopposition,whichifwecan judgeatallfromtheinnuendoesin thepoliticalorsemi-politicalspee- chesofLaborists,ispreparingfor thelong-wished-foronslaughtonthe Governmentoftheday.

This,wecaneasilyunderstand, andasreadilyadmit,whenwere- flectforamomentontheirrelevant loquacitywhichforthepastfew yearshasbecomeassociatedwiththe namesofourlegislators. Weeks havebeenspentinfrenzieddebates notindeedonquestionswhichcon cernthewell-beingofconstituents oroftheStateatlambutonper sonalandpettytrivialitieswhich

werereprehensibleifnotdisgraceful inanamateurdebatingsociety. DuringthepasttwoyearstheGovernmentcouldhaveverywellabolishedthisabusedidtheywishtouse theirpower; buttheydreadedthe fearfulchargeofsuppressingfreedomofspeech,andoftampering with"Britishjusticeandfairplay" whatevertheseshibbolethsmean. Theresultisthattheopposition knowstheGovernment'sweaknessand inthatknowledgeitrecognisesits ownstrength.Addedtothisisthe numericalincreaseintheranksof theLabourParty,andjustasnumbersconstitutedthestrengthofthe Governmentinpastsessions,sodo theyputtheLabourPartyinthe proudpositionofchallengingevery itemontheGovernmentprogramme to-day.

Thattheymeantochallengethe Governmentneedhardlybecalledin question.Thattheyambition,honourandlucrativepositionisonly natural-fortheyarenotsatisfied withauniformsalaryof£4per weekthroughouttheyearforafew month'swork.Thatopportunities forventingtheircriticisms,elaboratingtheirgrievancesandenumeratingtheatrociouspoliticalsinsof theGovernmentwillbeaffordedin t'eearlyweeks.ofthenewsession, is(eliteunderstood;butthatthey willdoanygoodfortheStateor forthepeoplebydestructivecriticismandwantonobstructiveness, needsbuthementioned,toberefuted.Yetstillweshallhaveit.It isinthegameofpolitics.Itisthe policyofthePartywhichseeksto turntheotherPartyoutandfill theirplaces;-infact,tojustifythe existenceoftheopposition,theGovernmentmostbecriticised.Ifthere wereapolicyputforwardbythe criticswhichwouldappealtothe communityoreventotheindividual outsidethehideboundadherentsof theparty,wecouldunderstandtime andenergybeingspentingivingit practicalandintelligibleshape;but inthepresentstateofthepartiesin W.A.thereishardlyapreceptible differenceofpolicy.Soidenticalis itthatoneaccusedtheotherof stealingitofftheirprogramme. Differenceofopinionthereforebeingwanting,resortismadetocriticismofpersons.Somemember's dignitywasoffended. Someother member'sorationwasspoiledbythe unwelcomecheckofthespeaker.
