PatrickRyan,agedHO,whotook partinthechargeofBalaclava,but whodidnotparticipateintheVeterans'Fund,hasbeenfounddeadin abrickyardatBirtley,Durham.He hadbeenunabletofindemployment oflate.

TheMullingarBranchoftheUnitedIrishLeague,inaresolutionpassedatSunday'smeeting,declares thattheenvoystoBostonConventioncarrywiththemthegoodwishesandheartyconfidenceof,alltrue Nationalists,andfeelsassured"that ourexiledkinsmen,bythesuccessof theforthcomingConvention,will oncemoreprovetheirloyaltyand devotiontothecauseoftheirmotherland.

ThereportoftheLimerickIndustrialAssociationrefersappreciativelytothegenerosityofLordDunrayeningivingasumof£500towards industrialscholarshipsforstudents attechnicalclasses:nLimerickcity andcounty.ThecuuntypropagandastartedbytheassociationinsupportofIrishindustrieshadbeenvery successful,meetingshavingbeenheld onSundaysin23parishes.

TheUlsterchampionshipfinalbetweenAntrimandCavanwasplayed atClonesrecentlyindelightfulweather,andbeforealargecrowdof spectators. Mr.P.L.M'Elgunn, Donagh,CountyFermanagh,was referee.TheAntrimteamwasselectedfrom011amhFodhla,Seaghan anDiomais,BrianOg.,andDalcassian,whileCavanselectionwastakenchieflyfromDrumlane,O'ConnellsandCavanSlashers,withtwo fromKilleshandsaLeaguersandone fromCootehillCeltics.Bothteams wereinexcellentform,butAntrim wonthetossandshowedfromthe starttheirundoubtedsuperiorityin regardtoscientificplay.This,it wasstated,wastheresultoftheir havinghadregularpracticeduring thesummer.Inthefirsthalfthey showedmuchskillinpassing,and Cavanwerealtogetherunabletocontendagainsttheirrepeatedonsets, ortobreaktheirranksandscore. InafewminutesAntrim,having failedintheirfirstchargeonCavan'sgoal,returnedtotheattack, andputonagoal.Thiswasquicklyfollowedbytwopointsscoredin rapidsuccession,andbetweenthat andhalf-timetheyaddedanother. Cavanbrokeawayseveraltimes,but wereneverabletogetinsidethe goalline. Thescoreathalf-time was Antrim 1goal3pts. Cavan Nil. OnresumingCavanhadtheadvantageofthebed,andshowedan improvementintheirmethodof play. "Itisimpossibletowritein termsotherthanthoseofthestrongestcondemnationoftheGovernment,withrespecttoyesterday'sprocessionoftheBlessedSacrament, whichwastohavebroughttoa conclusiontheproceedingsoftheEucharisticCongress.Theyhaveonce moredisplayedtheircharacteristic weaknessandirresolution,theirsusceptibilitytopressure,andtheirreadinesstomakeconcessionstothe clamourofafewextremists.The resultisthattheywillbringdown uponthemselvesastormofobloquy andindignation,andexciteanimositieswhichneedneverhavebeenstirredoutofquiescence. London learntwiththegreatestsurpriseyesterdaymorningthattheGovernment hadintervenedattheeleventhhour, andplacedirresistiblecompulsion upontheArchbishopofWestminster tochangeentirelythecharacterof theprocession.Aprocession,itis true,didtakeplace,andwithout thesemblanceofpublicdisorder,but itwasnotthesolemn,stately,and magnificentProcessionoftheBlessedSacrament,towhichtheRoman Catholicsofthiscountryhadlookedforwardtowithfervourandenthusiasmastheculminatingtriumph ofamemorableCongress.Theecclesiasticalauthoritiesaretobecongratulateduponthecalmnessand dignitywithwhichtheyboreadisappointmentthatmusthavebeenexceedinglyhitter,anduponthesuccesswithwhichtheycommunicated withtheirownwell-disciplinedselfrestraint,tothefollowerswholook tothemforguidance

TheProcessionshornofitsmost strikingfeatures,washeldinthe presenceofvastandperfectlyorderlycrowds,probablygreaterthan haveeverbeenconcentratedintoa smallspaceofLondon.Todevout Catholicsitwasrobbedofmostof itsreligioussignificancebytheabsenceoftheBlessedSacrament,and theincidentiscertaintoleavebehinditastrongsenseofirritation andresentment.Itiseasierto bearinjusticethanstupidity,and everyonemustfeelthatthisaffair hasbeenstupidlyandneedlesslymishandled.Itdealsaheavyblowat thesacredcauseofcompletereligioustoleration.Everycomplimentaryphraserecentlyutteredbythe Pope,bythePapalLegate,andby thehighecclesiasticaldignitaries fromabroadnowvisitingEngland, aboutthelarge-mindednessofEnglishmen,andthegloriouslibertyof thoughtandactionwhichpreveil here,isturnedtoironyby.thisblunderoftheGovernment.Thepleasantwordswillberetracted,and theforeignvisitorstotheCongress willquittheseshoressmartingunderasenseofinsult."

The"Times

Theprocessionpassedoffyesterdayafternoonwithoutanydisturbanceorseriousunpleasantness,much tothesatisfactionoflaw-abiding citizensofeverycreel.Wecongratulateitspromotersuponthisresult duelargelytotheirgoodsensein than;n?;theirprogrammeatthelast hour.Wecannotextendourcon£ratulationstotheGovernment. Theyhaveblunderedconspicuously; and,iforderhasbeenpreserved,this isnotascribabletothem. The statutorydisabilitywhichstandsis thewayof:aichprocessionswaspassedindaysverydifferentfromours, andwithdangerspresentorapprehended,whicharenowgone. The timeseemstohavecomeforacalm Considerationofthequestioninthe li'ktofthefacesofto-day.Inthe

opinionofverymanywhohaveno sympathywiththeclaimsofthe ChurchofRome,itwouldbenotonlyright,butsafe,toputonterms ofequalityinthesemattersallreligiousbodieswhichchosetaconform

withoutpublishingthefactthatthe abandonmentwasduetohisintervention.Thiswasamistake.Privateactioninacaseofthiskind wasoutofthequestion. Itwas quiteinevitablethatDr.Bourne shouldforceMr.Asquitb,toaccept theresponsibility.Mr.Asquithin theenddidso,andtheCatholicauthoritiesabandonedthecentralfeatureoftheprocession,whichpassed offyesterdaywithdignityanddecorumandwithoutthesemblanceof disorder.

Weadmitthatthepositionofthe Governmentwasdieacult,anditmay bethattheyhadinformationwhick ledthemtochangetheirattitudetowardstheprocession.Butweare topoliceregulations. Itisinboundtosaythatwedonotbelieve thelightofthesefacts,andtheex-therewouldhavebeendisorder.Tke perienceofyesterday,notinthatofpeopleofLondonaremoretolerant theargumentsofLordEldonandthantheGovernmentappeartohaLordRedesdaleandothersticklersseine.6)urjealousyforthereput- andzealotsfordisabilities,in1829,ationofLondoncompelsustosay thatwethinktheGovernmentought nottohaveallowedtheProtestant Alliancetoterrifythemintoapanic-strickensurrenderto-.ahandfulof obscurebigots.Theyoughttohave stucktotheirfirstdecision,andreliedontheassuranceofthepolice thattheprocessionwasnotamenacetopublicorder.Astothelegal argument,it&esnotaffectus,for wedonotbelieveinit.TheAct Iswhatwechoosetomakeit,like manyotherobsoleteActs.The Governmenthaverevived

thatthemattershouldnowbeconsidered. AssoonasParliament meetstheGovernmentwillbeexpectedtogivefullexplanationsasto theirstrangeconductinregardto theprocession.Itistobehoped alsothattheywillstatetheirviews frankly,andwithoutreferenceto anyimpendingelection,astothe policyofappealingormodifyinga sectionoftheActof1829whichhas oftenbeentreatedasadeadletter, andthevalueofwhich,foranygood purpose,istosaytheleast,very doubtful.

ForourpartwebelieveintheinstinctiverespectoftheBritishpeopleforallsincereconviction. Had theProcessiontakenplaceasoriginallyprojected,wedonotthink,that therewouldhavebeeneitherirreverenceorabreachofthepeace.We regretthatanyactionwhateverwas takenbytheGovernment.Agreat manypersonswillapplaudthePrime Minister'saction. "TheseRoman Catholics,"theywillsay,"arebecomingtooarrogant.Itwashigh timetheywereremindedthatEnglandisaProtestantCountry."In allseriousnessweask,wastheremindernecessary? IsourProtestantismsofeeblethatitneedsto beartificiallyencouragedbyaGovernmentinterdictonareligiousprocession? ItisbecauseEngland lovesliberty,becauseProtestantism hasforitsfoundationstonesliberty ofconscienceandtherightofindependentjudgment,thatweshould concedetoourRomanCatholicfellow-citizensthesamerightsandprivileges,nolessandnomore,aseveryothersectionofthecommunity. Itisnot.RomanCatholicism,but Liberalism,thathastherightto complainofthisinterdict.Rome doesnotbelieveinlibertyorintoleration.Wedo.Letushavethe courageofourprinciples.Marcus Aurelius,inoneofhissublimeaphorisms,says

"Whatevermyneighbourmay doorsay,itismydutytoremain good,muchaswereapieceof gold,oranemerald,orapurple robe,totakeforitsmotto'What evermanmaysayordo,mypart istobemyselfandretainmycolour.'" Soinlikemanneritistheduty ofLiberalstobeloyaltotheprinciplesofLiberalismandofEngland tobefaithfultoitsnobletraditions ofreligiousfreedomandequality.

The"Star."

AttheeleventhhourtheGovernmentallowedProtestantbigotryto frightenthemoutoftheirfaithin ourtolerance.Theycametothe conclusionthatitisnotsafeto grantreligiouslibertytoRoman Catholics.ThecorrespondencebetweenthePrimeMinisterandArchbishopBourneisnotagreeablereadingforLiberals.Itshowsthat Mr.Asquitllwasanxioustoplease allparties,andthathetriedtopersuadeDr.Bournetoabandonthe ceremonialfeaturesoftheprocession

itwe wouldhaveletitmoulderinits grave.

Forourselves,weregretthosecircumstancesverymuchindeed,and wedeplorethestateoflawandopinionwhichmakesourcountry,the verybirthplaceandhomeofreligious liberty,appearlesstolerantthan otherEuropeannations.Lastyear inGermany,forexample,theEucharisticCongressassembledatMetz, andtheEucharisticProcessionwas heldbyspecialpermissionofthe Government.TheActwhichforbadetheProcessionwassuspended fortheoccasion,thoughitwasonlythirty-sevenyearsold,whereas ourActiscloseuponeighty. The-Rev.FatherLynchat10o'clockMassonSunday,stronglyurgeduponthecongregationtheadvisabilityofallmembers_oftheCatholiccommunityformingtheSociety,pointingoutthatitwastheonlyFriendlyBenefitSocietyin'AustralasiawhichhadtheofficialsanctionandpatronageoftheCatholic Church,andfurther,thatataConference,latelyheldinPerth,between theofficersoftheDistrict.Boardof theSocietyandvisitingpriestsof theDiocese,whowereinthecity fortheirAnnualRetreat,andover which,HisLordship,BishopGibneypresided,itwasunanimouslyresolvedthatalltheprieststhroughouttheDiocesewouldusetheirvery bestendeavourstoextendtheH.A.

C.B.S.intheirvariousparishes.He informedthecongregationthatimafterMassameeting wouldheheldatwhichtheDistrict Secretarywouldaddressthemand explaintheaimsandobjectsofthe Society,togetherwiththebenefits tobesecuredbymembershipthereof. AsarrangedawellattendedmeetingtookplaceintheA.N.A.Hall.

TheRev.FatherLynchbrieflyintroducedtheDistrictSecretaryasthe fullyaccreditedrepresentativeofthe SocietyintheState,andaskedthat hebeaccordedapatientandfavourablehearing.TheDistrictSecretary,afterthankingFatherLynch andthosepresentfortheircordial reception,proceededtofurnishinformationtothemeetingonvarious importantquestions,mentioningthe factthattheHibernianSociety,he believedwastheonlySocietyof CatholiclaymenwhichHisHolinets, thePopehadhighlyhonoured,by receivingandreplyingtoacable sentdirectbythelastbi-ennial meetingoftheAustralasianExecutive,heldatPerth,2yearsago,an inwhichHisHolinessconveyedthe PapalBenedictiontoallmembersof theSociety. Inreferringtothe BenefitsofferedbytheHibernianSocietyhecontendedthatthey were' fullyequal,andinmanycasessuperiortothoseofferedbyotherFriendly Benefit Societies. Reference was madeto the National Patrioticsentiments, IrishandAustralasian,whichwere comprehendedintheconstitutionof theH.A.C.B.S.Hepointedoutto theladiesandgentlemenpresent thatSt.Patrick'sBranchofCoolbardiewas,asfarasitsfinancial positionwasconcernedonavery soundbasis.Anamountofabout £130standingtoitscreditatpresent,butthemembershiprollthroughvariouscauses,apathyofamajorityofthemembersandgreatlack ofattentionbythegoverningbody oftheDistrict,havinglargelycontributedtothisstateofaffairs.The DistrictBoardcameinforvery strongadverse.criticismbysomeof themembersoftheBranch,fortheir allegedwilfulneglecttowardsitin thepast. TheDistrictSecretary explained,however,thatthisneglect was,toagreatextent,attributable totbetactthattheBoardwereDot

fullyseizedwiththeinformationthat therollofmemberswassodepleted orthatithadreachedsuchalow condition.HehadlatelybeenappointedasPremanentSecretaryand Organiserandcouldassurethem withthefullestconfidencethathence forwardtherewouldbenocausefor complaintofanyneglectonthepart oftheDistrictBoard,asinfuture, immediatelytheDistrictOfficersbecameacquaintedwiththefactthat aBranchinanypartoftheState requiredtheassistanceoftheorganisingofficer,oraninspectioninto theaffairsofworkingofsuchBranch wasrequisite,thenthey,theDistrict),wouldimmediatelydespatch him(theDistrictSecretary)toinquireintoandprovidethenecessary remedyforsuchcomplaints.
