ThefuneralofanotheroldandrespectedcolonistinthepersonofMrs AnnMcComish,ofthiscity,took placerecentlyandwasattendedbyaverylargecircleofrelativesandfriends.Deceasedarrivedin theStateofWesternAustraliaat theageof3yearswithherfather, thelateMr.Thos.Hackett,inthe year1841,bytheshipGanges.She wasmarriedtothelateMr.Edward McComish,ofH.M.i12thRegimentof Foot,in1859andleavesfoursons andthreedaughtersand25grandchildren,allofwhomhavemadetheir homeinthisState.Herlatehusbandpredeceasedhersomeeight yearsago.Thecorteemovedfrom theresidenceofherson-in-law,Mr. P.Finnerty,220BrownSt.,East Perth,withwhomthedeceasedhad residedwithforthepast13yearsbothinPinjarrahandBayswater,to theCathedralcftheImmaculate Conception,wnereashortservice washeld,thenceperroadtotheRomanCatholicCemetery,Karrakatta,weretheremainswereintarred, theReverendFatherO'Neilconductingtheceremonyatthegraveside. Thepall-bearerswereMessrs.A. LetusnewseehowtheEnglishre- paidthishonourableconductof Sarsfield.Nosoonerhadthearmy whichwontheTreaty,leftErin's shoresthanthenintharticlewas broken;fsratthemeetingcfPar- liament,theCatholicPeersandCommonswererequiredtotakeanoath whichdeniedthedoctrineoftrans- substantiation,andpronouncedthe sacrificeoftheMass"damnableand idolatrous." accessiontheProtestantsinIreland wereonlyaboutasixthofthepopulation;buttheypossessedallthe Power.Plantedamongaverynaturaldiscontentedpopulation,theylivedinastateofterror,and,witha ferocitybornoffeartheypasseda crushingpenalcode,besidewhich theoppressionsofWilliamfadedintoinsignificance.ToconvertProtestanttotheCatholic was declaredpremunive,andpun'sna,ble withimprisonmentforlife.Educationwasfurtherprohibited,1,rit nowbecamecriminalforaCat'aolic toemployatutorortoactas'.ne. Catholicswereforbiddentobuyland andwereforcedtoleavetheirestatesingavelkdnd(thatis,inequal Portionstoalltheirchildren),unless asonconformed,inwhichcaseheinheritedthewholeproperty,andcould forcehisfathertoallowhimathird ofhisincomeduringhislifetime.No Papistcouldtakealeaseformore thanthirty-oneyears,norcouldhe raisemoneyonhisestates. All civilserviceandMunicipalappointments,allthelearnedprofessions, savemedicine,aswellasallpositionsofpu!lictrustwerenowclosed toCatholics.Papistswerenextforbiddentoemploymorethantwoapprenticesexceptinthelinentrade, andCatholicgentlemenwerepreventedfromcarryingandfromkeeping arms,normighttheytravelmore thanfivemilesfromhomewithout apassport.Ashistravellingwas thuscurtailed,aCatholicwasnot allowedtokeepahorseoverthevalueof£5.IfafarmheldbyaCatholicyieldedone-thirdmorethan theyearlyrent,anyProtestantmight,bysimplyswearingthefact,evictthetenantandtakepossession. Thereweremanyothervillainous provisionsbutprobablyoneofthe mostinfamousofall,wasthat whichfreedanymarriedwomanwho conformedfromherCatholichusband control,andallowedhertodemand anindependentallowance.Thusthe dissoluteson,ortheunlovingwife hadonlytoaddtotheirguiltthehypocrisyofapretendedconversion,to reaparichreward.ButitwasagainsttheClergythatthelawwas mostsevere.Thereweretobe3,000priestsregisteredforthewhole country,andanyunregisteredpriest wasliabletobeputtodeath.No BishopswereallowedinIreland, and when therriestsdied, theirregistersdiedwiththem sothathadtheIrishobeyedthe law.Catholicismmustsoonhavebecomeextinct.Araceofpriesthuntersgrewupwhowererewardedfor theirdiscoveriesaccordingtothe standingoft'eirvictims.£50for aBishop,£20forapriest,and£13 foraSchoolmaster.Stillthough, theregisteredpriestsslied,Catholicismlived.Bishops,priests,and Schoolmasterscontinuedtofulfil theirduties.Theyworkedhidden inthemountains,orinthecabins ofthepeasantry,andthesteadyattachmentofthepeopletotheirreligion.andheroicresistanceoftyrannyforconsciencesake,isunexampledinthehistoryoftheworld.At theaccessionofGeorgeII,allCatholicsweredeprivedofthepowerof votingatelectionsformembersof Parliament,oratthoseofthecivil corporations. ThepenalcodeaffectedtheCatholicsonly;buttherewereotherrestrictionswhichfellonthewholepopulation.EnglandlookedonIrelandasadangerousrival,whose prosperitymustbecheckedlestit mightendangerherown. Inthe timeofCharlesII.,cattle,meit,ham pork,cheese,andbu'terhadbe'n excludedfromtheEnglishmarket. InconsequenceofthistheIrishfarmersconvertedtheirpasturesinto sheenwalks,andsoonproducedthe LestwoolinEurope.Quantitiesof itwereexnertedray-bothtoFrance andSpein;buttherewasalsoa largeandgrowingindustryinwoollengodswhichweremanufactured bothforhomeconsumptionandfor exoortet'on.BitthisindustryexcitedtheenvyandfearsofEnelfnd, andearlyintheeihteeethcentury theexportationofwool,eithermanufacturedorinanaturalstate,to
anyforeigncountryortoanyColonywasforbidden.Englandthussecuredtoherselfthemonopolyofthe bestwoolinEuropeatherown priceandwhilewoolwas2s.6d. perlbinFrance,Irishwoolwassellingatlivepence.
Theonlygreatindustriesnowleft toIrelandweretheshipbuildingand linentrades,butEnglandtoo,was ashipbuildingcountry,andthefiat wentforththatIrelandshoulduse nonebutEnglish-builttradingyes sels,andwastotradedirectlywith nocountrysaveEngland.Bythis lawtheseaporttownswereruined, andtheirinhabitantstogetherwith theshipbuilderswereforcedtoemigrate,ortrytolivebyagriculture. Addedtoallthiswasthelandtenure,whichwasmostdisgraceful. Rentswereentirelytoohigh,and eventhenthetenantshadnosecurityoftenure.Inadditionsthetitheswhichhadtobepaidtotheabsenteeministersoftheestablished Church,wereafearfulburden.Grazinglandwasexemptedfromthe paymentofthetithes,andthisfact coupledwiththepenalcoderesulted inmakingIrelandagrazingcountry.Thelabouringclasses,theevictedtenants,andtheartisansthrown outofworkformedthemselvesinto bandswhichwerecalledWHITE BOYSinMunster.Thesemendriventodesperationbyhungerwent outatnight,andslaughteredthe cattleofthegraziers,whiletheownershearingthecriesofthedying animals,layquakingintheirbeds. Thevolunteersfinallybecame 100,000strong,andtheIrishfelt thatthiswasthetimetodemand Freetrade. GrattanandHussy Burghbroughtforwardamotionin theIrishHouseofCommonsforColonialFreetrade; andinobedience tothethreatsofthevolunteers,Irelandwaspermittedtotradefreely withtheColonies.Thenextmove wasabolderandmoreimportant one.GrattanbroughtinaBilldeclaringthat"TheKing,theLords, andtheCommonsofIrelandarethe onlypowerscompetenttoenactthe lawsofIreland."TheBillbecame lawin1782. Irelandwasnow,afreecountrybut stillnearlyfive-sixthsofherpeople werewithoutpoliticalrights,and eventheProtestantminoritycould hardlybesaidtoelectitsownrepresentatives,sincemorethanhalf thememberswerenomineesofpeers orgovernmentofficials.Thevolunteersresolvedthatas1782wasthe yearofIndependence,1783shouldbe theyearofParliamentaryreform. AnOblatemissionary,goingto takepartintheGeneralChapterof hisOrderinRome,hasbeengoodenoughtogiveusthefollowingreligiousstatisticsconcerningCeylon.In roundnumbersthereareintheislandtwomillionsofBuddhists,nearlyonemillionofBrahmanists,350,000Mohammedans,325,000Catholics, and70,000Protestants.TheCatholicpopulationisnowfivetimeswhat itwasahundredyearsago.Since 1893therearefivediocesesinCeylon,viz.,ColomboandJaffna(OblatesofMaryImmaculate),Kandy (SylvestrineBenedictines),andGallo andTrincomalie(Jesuits).Inthe diocesesofColomboandJaffnathere are152priests(36beingnativesof theisland)manyprofessedBrothers(somenatives)manynuns(somebeingnatives)inconvents,schools,andhospitalstwoseminaries twocollegesatrainingcollegefor teachers 520Catholicelementary schools,with42,000pupilsthreeindustrialschoolstwoEnglishand twoTamilCatholicnewspapers.
Oneofthewitnessestobeexaminedattheordinarycourtsittingat Imolainconnectionwiththecause ofPopePiusIXisMonsignorDomenicoBaruzzi,whowasforseveral yearsBishop'sSecretaryatImola. Hewillgiveevidenceonthevery curiousquestionraisedwithgreat clamoursometwentyyearsagoin theFrenchandItalianpress,asto anentryinthearchivesofaMasoniclodgeinPalermowhichstated thatGiovanniFerrettiMastaiofthe PontificalStateshadbeenduly swornamemberinthefirsthalfof themonthofAugust,1839. LastSundayshoneoutamidthe gloomandinclemencyofthedisagreeableweatherwhichhasprevailed forthepastfewweeksasourDivineLordHimself,shoneandshines, amidthedarknessandwickednessof theworld.Duringtheweekofpreparationforthegreatprocessionof theMostBlessedSacramentatSubloco,speculationwasrifeastowhetheritwouldbepossibletohave theprocession.Everydayseemed moredisagreeable.Rain,wind,and squallswereveryuninvitingandveryundesirableaccompanimentsto sacredsinging,andtherecanbelittledoubtthatdidtheweathernot takeup,thegloriousspectaclewitnessedbyaboutfivethousandpeople onlastSundaywouldhavebeena veritablefiasco.Asiteventuated however,thedaycouldnothave beenmoresuitableevenifGodhad speciallygivenittoorder. The morningwokewithabrilliantsun, andacoolatmosphere,andasthe dayworeon,itbecamethanhfullv evidentthattheafternoonwouldbe anidealoneforanopen-airlenst ousdemonstration.
Trainsandtramswerekindlytint edtoconveytheprocessionistswitntoeasydistanceofSt.Joseph'sOipnanage,andthenumberofvehicles ofeveryshapeandmakewasnever sonumerousasonthisoccasion. HisLordshiptheBishop,accompaniedbytheVeryRev.FatherGibney, andFatherSmytharrivedonthe groundataquarterpastthree-the VeryRev.FatherKeoghhadbeen theresincetheearlymornmaking everyendeavourtohaveallthings inreadiness.
Attheappointedhour,3.30p.m. theOrphanagegroundspresenteda splendidappearance.Thenewbuildinglookedmajesticinitsarchitectualcompleteness. Thousandsof peoplestuddedeveryavailablefoot ofgroundintheimmediatevicinity ofthefirstaltar.TheSocietiesof theSacredHeart,theChildrenof Mary,theYoungMen,theHibernians andForresters,theChoirsfromthe differentparishes,theOrphanboys fromGlendaloughandClontarf,the girlsofSt.Joseph'sOrphanage,the HolyAngels,theSistersofthedifferentCommunities-SistersofMercy,St.JohnofGod,St.Josephs' Fremantle,&c.,andfinallythepriests,leadbytheBishop-allformeda mostimposingspectacleandgavea mostvividexpressionoffaithin theirHolyReligion.TheHibernian Society,togetherwiththeOrphan girlsformedareceptionbody-guard furtheBishoponhisarrivalonthe grounds,whilethevastthrongof peopleneatlyandfashionablydressed,manifestedasplendidspiritof reverenceendrespect,asHisLordshipkindlypassedthroughgivingto oneandallhisEpiscopalBlessing. TheOrphanGroundsneverlookel better.AnOliveGroveclothesthe thehillonwhichtheorohanaeeis erectel,andbythewayfromthese, sameolivespickedbythelittleOrphangirls fromwhichthey extracttheoil-whichisconsecrated byirestoftheBishopsinAustralia forSacramentalpurposesonevery Mai'ndyThursday.Everywherethu soilwascoveredwithavigorousherbare,andtheprimevalforestalternatedwithareasofimpenetrablebrushwoodandgiantgumtrees.The Altarswerethreeinnumber,draped withred,crownedwithflowersofeveryhueand-beauty,andarranged withthatinimitableskill-whichis AOcharacteristicoftheSistersof Mercy.

Sacramentwasexposed,theCathedralChoirsangthe"0Salutaris," andtheRev.FatherMangan,C.SS. R.,ascendedtherostrumanddeliveredabriefbutveryforcibleandlucidsermon.onthedoctrineoftheHolyEucharist-asbelievedandunderstoodbyCatholics.
Wearemetthisafternoon,saidthe ReverendPreacher,totakepartin ourAnnualProcession.Wearemet thisafternoontohonourJesusin theSacramentofHisLove.Weare metthisafternoontoprofesspublic- lyourFaithintheRealPresenceof ourLordintheBlessedSacrament. OurLord,Himself,tellsusheis withus,notonlydimingtheday, notmerelyduringthisafternoondemonstration,butHeiswithusthroughoutthelonglonelyhoursofnight,orasHe,Himself,expressedit, "Lo 1amwithyoualldays,eventotheconsummationofthe world."
And,whyisHewithusinthe BlessedSacrament,dayandnight, nightandday?Heiswithusfirst ofalltobethefoodofloursoulsin HolyCommunion.-Amen,amen,I saytoyou,"Exceptyoueatofthe fleshoftheSonofMan,anddrink Hisblood,youshallnot lifein you."
Heiswithusfurther,tobeour friend.Weneedoneinthisvaleof tears,andJesusChristwouldbe thatfriendindeed,-"Mydelights, Hesays,aretobewiththeChildren ofMen."
IfitisthedelightofourLordto bewithusthisafternoon,evidently,judgingfromyourpresencehere thisafternoonit,isthedelightofthe CatholicsofPerthanditssuburbsto bewithJesus. Foryourpresence hereonthisoccasionwearetruly grateful,andonbehalfofyourBishopandhispriests,andespecially onbehalfofJesusChristIbegto thankyou.

InSt.John'sGospel,the6th ChapterwehaveourDivineLord PROMISINGusHisfleshandBlood toLethemeatanddrinkofour souls. Whenwasthispromise made? InthehourofourLords greatestP-oPularitywhenthepeople wantedtotakehimbyforceand makeHimKingitwasontheoccasiontoo,ofHisworkingthatwonderfulmiracleoffeeding5,000men, inthedesertwith5loavesofbread, andafewfish.
ItwasonthisevermemorableoccasionthatJesusmadethepromise andhereareHiswords "Iamthelivingbreadthatcame downfromHeaven. andthe breadthatIWILLgiveismyFlesh forthelifeoftheworld."
Allwhowerepresent,allwhoheardthesewordsfromthelipsofJesusunderstoodthemasreferriagto HisrealfleshandHisrealblood fordoesnotSt.Johntellusthat thepeople"Stroveamongstthem selvessaying,HowcanthisMan giveusHisfleshtoit;Itisahard saying,andwhocanhearit."And Jesusconfirmedthemmoreandmore inthebeliefthatitwasHisreal fleshandBloodthatHespokeof,for Hesaid "Amen,amen,Isiytoyouexcept youeatoftheFleshoftheSonof MananddrinkHisBlood,youhave noliteinyou." Thenitwas,Brethren,thatSt. Peter,thefirstPope,inthenameof rydeadtoriseagainfromthegravehisfellowApostles,spokethatfirst whoatthecloseofHismortallife,grandactoffaithintheRealPres-

ThreeoutofthefourEvangelists,Matthew,MarkandLukedescribe thesceneoftheLastSupper,and giveustheverywordsoffulfilment. "WhilstatSupperJesustookbread intoHishands,"thatsameJesus whocreatedtheSunandtheMoon, andthestarsoutofnothing,and byawordonly,whocouldcreatea thousandworldsmorebeautifuland Perfectthantheoneinwhichice live,ifHehadamind,outofnothingandbyaword,whowalkedon thewaters,changedwaterinto wine,raisedthedeadtolife,that sameJesustookbreadintoHis handsandblessedit,aidgaveto Hisdisciples,saying,"Takeye,and eat,ThisismyBody,anhthentheChalice,saying,Drink,yeallofthis, ThisisMyBloodthatshallbeshed foryouandformanyuntothere- missionofsins."

WhatreturnhasourLordreceived forallHisLove?Howhasitbeen requited?Well,thanksbetoGod, weneednotbetakeourselvesinspirit toItaly,totheEternalCity,Rome, ortoHolyIreland,ortoEngland, toLondon,totherecentEucharlaticcongresstolearnhowtheloveof Jesushasbeenrequitedwehaveonlytolookaboutusherethisafternoon.

In thecentreofthenave,nearthealtar,kneltagirlishfigurerobedlike abride.Herfilmyveilwascaught withorangeblossoms,andhersatinygownofcreamywhitesweptover thecarpetedpavementofthechoir. SheroseasIgazed,andamidthe musicofthechantedpsalm,andconductedbytwonuns,softlymoved downtheaisle,passedmeanddisappeared.Ilookedatherface.It wasbeautiful,withaspirituallovelinesshardtodescribe.Herdark eyeswerelowered,hercheekswere flushed,andanexpressionofangelic happinesslinseredonherfeatures. "Iwonderwhosheis?"Imurmured,asIbentmyheadandtried tokeepbackthetears.
Soonshereturned,thebride's dresslaidasideforever,andthe blackrobeandwhiteveilcfthenoviceenvelopingherslenderform.She wasevenmoreradiantthanbefore, andtheholylightofGod'slove shonefromherface.Peace,content, joyandhappinessspreadtheirwhite lightaroundher,andIkneltand enviedherfromthecoreofmy heart.
Theceremonywasover.ThebreathofincenselingeredintheChapel,risingsoftlyinmistyclouds,stainedbythehuesofthepictured windows.Istayedthere,fullofemotionandtears.Howthememories ofyearscameback,andhowthe scrollofthepastunrolledbefore me
