Foracenturypastthepopulation ofIrelandhasbeandriftingacross theAtlantic,andtheRegistrar-General'sreportforlastyearshows thatthemovementcontinueswith unabatedforce.Therewasanexcessof24,408ofbirthsoverdeaths lastyearinIreland,butthisincreaseofpopulationwasswampedby anemigrationof39,082.Thisemigrationrepresentsanincreaseof 3,738onthepreviousyear,andof 1,701ontheaverageforthepastten years.Theplainmoralisthatno "sympatheticAdministrationcan be'`e'enanadequatesubstitutefor theboonofself-government.

Itisstatedthatanothermatch hasbeenarrangedbetweenMartin SheridanandTomKielytotake placeatBallinasportsonSunday, says"ClommelNationalist,"September6th. Thetwochampions willgiveanexhibition'displayin throwingofthediscus,inwhich Sheridanhasbrokentwoworldrecords. Bothmenareinsplendid form,andonSundaylasttheyaddedfurtherrecordstotheiralready longlists.Itisofinteresttoknow thatyoungSheridanismarriedto aMissSmith,daughterofanold Clommelman.Mr.Smithservedin thePapalWar,andonitstermination'wenttoAmerica,wherehejoinedtheArmy.HesubsequentlyenteredtheNewYorkPoliceForce, androsetotherankofCaptain. Heisnowenjoyingwell-earnedrest onasubstantialpension.Though manyyearsoutofClommelhestill lovestheoldtown,andisdeeplyinterestedinitsprogress.

ThespeechofMr.Churchillisvery significantinthatitmakesfrankacknowledgementoftheeffectonthe standingofEnglandofthedenialof theIrishdemand,saysthe"Dublin Freeman.""If,"saidMr.Churchill."youwanttomaketheBritish' Empirestrong,ifyouwanttomake theBritishpeopleglorious,ifyou wanttoestablishgoodrelationsall overtheworldandletourname standhighinmanylandsbesides ourown,workforanationalsettlementwithIrelandonabasisof somegenerousreconciliation,which shallsecureforthemthenatural rightswhichtheymostdeeplydesire."Theappeal,weread,was greetedwithcheers,andMr.ChurchillwentontoremindthedemonstrationthatEnglandhadquiterecentlytakenamoreresponsiblestep inSouthAfrica."Why,theproblemofgivingHomeRuletoIreland isnothinglikesodifficultorsoseriousorsodangerousastheproblem whichwehavejustsuccessfullysolvedinSouthAfrica,andwhichhas alreadyhealedthewoundsthere."

Again,inthatstrongholdofProtestantism,theUnitedDtatesofAmerica,wefindthatthemovement hasmadegiantstrides.IntheAnglo-SaxonRepublicthereexistedin 18703,806Catholicchurches,orchapels,tenyearslatertheirnumber hadincreasedto5,975.In1890the Catholicsnumbered6,257,871(with 9,196priests) in1900,8,447,801. (with11,150priests),representingby farthelargestreligiouscommunity, intheStates.

erofpriestsadvocated.Bandsof fanatics,calledthe"KnowNothing,"armedwithswords,revolvers, andtorches,marchedtoachurch whereaCatholiccongresswasbeing held.Astheywenttheirnumbers wereswelledbytheruffiansandhooligans,whoaboundingreatcemmercialcentres.Thirtythousanddesperadoessurroundedthebuilding, bentonitsdestruction,when,to theirccnstrenation,thedoorssuddenlyflewopen,revealingthecompactranksofathleticanddeterminedmen,preparedtoresisttheinvaderswithloadedfire-arms.Atthis unexpectedchallengethemobbeata hastyretreat. Morethanonce bloodwasshedinthestreetsof NewYork,tillatlastthepopulationrealisedthatanindestructible Faithisimpervioustoshotorsteel. To-day,theCathedralofSt.Peterasplendidbuildingofstoneand marble,oneofthefinestmonuments ofthecity-isfilledtooverflowing atalltheservicesbyrichandpoor alike.

Japan,inspiteofhereageracceptanceandimitationofEuropeancivilisation,st11remainsunmovedby Affw. theteachingsoTChristianitytoany appreciableextentsofarasonecan judge,forthecensusof1903gives norecordofreligiousbeliefs. We onlyknowthatoneoftheMinisters oftheMikadohasbeenconverted, andthattherearemoreCatholicsin JapanthanProtestantsofalldenominations.

Ontheotherhand,inChinathe numberofCatholicshasincreasedto over1,000,000withinthelastfew years,whiletheProtestantsects havenotattainedhalfthatfigure, althoughtheycommandimmenseresources. Sothat,evenifburningwitha cloudedlightinsomemisguidedportionsoftheworld,whereonceit sheditspurestlustre,thesacred flameofFaithtriumphantlycarries theilluminatingpoweroftruthto thosewhohadremainedlonginignorance,andhaswonforitsaltar millionsofvotaries.
