AttheGeneralChapteroftheaboveOrder,whichisnowbeingheld inRome,theRightReverendAgustusDontenwill,O.M.I.,Bishopof NewWestminster,BritishColumbia, waselectedSuperiorGeneral.The VenerablePrelate,whohasbeenraisedtothisresponsibleandexalted office,wasborn.inthedioceseof Strasburg,thecapitalofAlsacein 1857.Whilestillyounghewentto Americawithhisuncle,avenerable priestofthediocesqofBuffalo.The youngDontewillwassentoutbyhis uncletotheUniversityofOttawa, then,asnow,conductedbytheOblateFathers,wherehetookouthis firstdegreeofM.A.Feelinghimself calledtothereligiouslifeheenteredtheOblateNovitiateatMontreal,whence,afterprofessionhewas sentbacktotheUniversity.In1880 hewasordainedpriest,andbecame professoroflanguages,anddirector oftheArtStudio,andafterwards professorofNaturalSciences.He speakswithequalfacilityGerman, English,andFrench.In1889his SuperiorssenthimtoNewWestminsteraspresidentoftheCollegenewlyfoundedthere. Byhistalents anddisinterestedlabourshebrought theCollegetoassuredsuccess.It wasinthispositionthatheattractedtheattentionofhisvenerable bishopDr.Durieu,whoinduetime requestedoftheHolyFatherhisappointmentasco-adjutor.TheSovereignPontiffentertainedthepetition,whichwasalsothatofSuffragansandoftheSuperiorGeneralof theOrdertowhichhebelonged.He waspreconisedtitularBishopofdermanicopolisandcoadjutortoDr. Durieuonthe3rdApril,1897,and finallybecameBishopofNewWestminsteronthe1stJune,1899.The OrderoftheOblatesofMaryImmaculatepossessesbranchesinevery PartoftheEnglishspeakingworld, theonlyfoundationsintheseparts beinginFremantleandGlendalongh.totheWestIndies.Abriefrefer-
parturefromSeattle,whichbuta: fewyearsago,wasalittlevili-ee, withafewfisherman'shutsandtodayisamagnificentcitywithban-dredsofthousandsofcitizens. Itwasastounding,atleasttothe unsophisticatedtoreadtheblatant andbomoasticspeechesofAustralian politiciansonthe"cousinship"that unitedtheAmericans,theEnglish andtheAustraliansduringthetime theAmericanbattleshipswereinour waters.Everyday,untiltheFleet hadgonefarintotheIndianOcean, onereadthecarefullypreparedaddresses,andthecleverexpressionsof welcome,framedbytheleadersof Australianpoliticalthoughtwhich conveyedtotheAmericanstheirassuranceof"handsacrossthesea" friendship,combinedwiththehope thatthe"Letterfeeling"would everobtain,andthateventuallythe grandAnglo-American-AustralianeatentswouldmaterialiseforthegloryoftheBibleandthe"Brotherhood ofman."InfactsomeofthespeakersseemtolosesightofEngland altogether,andtoforeeastalliances oftheirowninwhichAmericaand Australiawouldcombinefortheir mutualgood,tomaintainthepeace ofthePacificandtocirryoutthe inexorablepolicyofa"WhiteAustralia."Norweretheyinanyway coeentintheirre'snine,accurate intheirstatements,orwiseintheir anticipations.Suchdetailsdidnot worrythem.Theoccasionintheir eyesdemandedgreatdeelamatoryefforts.Soundsenseorreasonorthe considerationoftheotherparty's opinionorconvictionhadnoweight withthem.TheoneandallabsorbingideawasanAnglo-American AustralianAlliancewhichwouldbe abletobiddefiancetotheworld. Theyhadthesamelanguage,the sameideals,thesameaspirations. Theycamefromthesamecommon parentstock.Theirlikesanddislikesweresimilar.Theirenemies werethebrownandblackorcolouredraces,andintheiropinionthe timehadcomewhentheoldtraditionalill-feelingshouldblossomint') thewhiteroseofEternalfriendship.
Australiansofthisclass,whesepoliticalforesightisaslimitedas theirhistoricalandgeographical knowledgemakeonehugemistakein thattheyneverweightheracial andhistoricdifficultiesthatblock therealisationoftheirideals.They
havenohistoryoftheirown,and thereforetheycanneverlookback andseethecausesandeffectsofthe eventsthathavehappenedandwhich havemadehistory.Hence,itis thattheyflingouttheirideasinto midairoralliances,withoutgivingathoughttothefactthatfor agestheEnglishhavedoneeverythingthattheircharacteristicdiplomacyandduplicitycouldengineer, toeffectanalliancewithAmericaandthatsofartheyhavesignally failed.Ambassadorafteerambassadordowntothepreseatpolishedand culturedrepresentativeMr.James Boycehavehadthesameill-luck--theyhavefailedtoadvancetheEnglishidealoneinch.
Andwefeelthatitwillcontinue so.First,becauseAmericadoubts Englishintegrity.Asshehasbeen warnedbyherleadingjournalists, "Englishsympathyisselfish,and whileshepleadsforourloveonthe onehandshehasadaggerinthe othersneakingtostabusinthe biker."Secondly,anti-EnglishSocietiesintheStateswillcontinuea constant,neverchangingbarrierto anEnglishalliance,untilEir_land dealsfairlyandsquarelywiththe littlesisterIsland.If,indeed,we weretobeguidedorinformedby theEnglishcablecrammers,we shouldbelievethattheIrishand CatholicSocietiesintheUnitedStateswerethemostcorruptandunprincipledorgapisationsintheworld TheirpurposesandmotivesandactiorsaroahharredofGodandabominabletothepiousconsciencesthat havebeensetatrestbyBibical cant.Theyshudderattheverymentioeofthe"Clan-na-gael"orthe "OldIrelandSociety."Theysneer attheUnitedIrishLeagueofAmcries,theA.O.H.,andothersofthis class,whiletheysickenofhorrorat theatrocitiesof"Tammany."HowevertheAmericansknowmoreof thesesocietiesthandotheEnglish CableCrammers. Theysaythat theseSocietiesoneandall-have committedandpersistentlycontinue toccmmittheunpardonelesinof preventinganAngloAmescanalliance,andthereforewhateverthey doisasin.AccordingtoEnglish politicalmorality,orratherexpediency-societiesfoundedforthewellbeingofIrelandareimmoralInstitetions.Theirraisond'etreis rebellion,andtheiractsarerebellious,thereforewhatevertheydois wickedandcorrupt.Thusspoke theyveryrecentlyof"Tammany." Thelattercouldnotprosecutethem, butwhentheyaccused"B-ssCroker,"thePresidentofTammanyof corruptPracticesthe"Times"had tohumblyapologiseinitsnextissue.AsFatherGlees-n-theChaplainoftheAmericanFleetwhenaskedwhathethoughtofTammany replied,"Tammanyisasplendidly organisedIrishInstitutionwhichhas ontheforefrontofitsprogramme theisolationofEnglandfromAmericanfriendship. Itcontrolsthe electionsofNewYorkeveryfour yearsoutrffive,anditdoesmore charitableworkinammaththanany so-calledChristiansectthatisfatheredbytheReformationwoulddoin ayear.Itisneverthelessbounded downbytheEnglishpress,forthe solere,sonthatitisimmenselyinfluentielendbecauseitismehaVcallyIrish.I,myself,amamember ofTammanyandamproudofit.If itwerethediabolicalagencythe EnglishPresswouldmakeit,needless tosayIcouldnotremainamember ofir."Thesameandmoremay besaidoftheotherSocietieswhich havedonetheirworksoeffectively. But,astheoldslaying, says,"theunexpectedoftenhappens,"(whichitdidonthisoccasion),whenthisyounglad,(astudentoftheChristianBrothers'College),preparedtogivehisrecital. Frombeginningtoendhisrendering wasamasterpieceofelocution,comingfromonesoyoung.Heseemed toelectrifyhisaudience,heputso muchenergyendlifeintotoit,and whenhehadfinishedtherewasno doubtastowhothewinnerwas.

OntheoccasionofthefiftiethanniversaryofhispriesthoodtheHoly Father,withlivelyandpaternalaffection,hasaddressedtotheCatholicclergyoftheworldanexhortationurgingthattheirlivesbeinall thingswhatsuitstheirdivineoffice. HisHolinesspointsoutthattheadmonitionoftheApostleoftheGentilestotheHebrews,whenhewrote -"Fortheywatchasbeingtorenderanaccountofyoursouls"(xiii, 17),isstronglyappealingandfearinspiring.Ifthisresponsibilityattachestoallwhohaveauthorityin theChurch,itbelongsinaparticularmannertohim,who,thoughunenualtothetask,holdsbyGod's giftthesupremeposition. Whereforeheisnightanddaysubjectto anxietyandstriveforwhatwilltend to

underhischarge. Amongstother subjectsonematterespeciallyengageshisattention-thattheclergy shouldbewhollyworthyoftheoffice whichtheyhold. Heispersuaded thatinthisonedirectionliesthe strongesthopefortheprosperityand extensionofreligion.Whenhewas appointedtotheSeeofPeterhe warmlyexhortedtheBishopsofthe Catholicworldthattheycoulddo nothingmoreefficaciousthantoinstilthespiritofChristinthosewho weredestinedtoinstilitinothers. Heacknowledgesthatastheresult ofthatappealmanyoftheclergy wereinspiredwithincreasedardour, hutatthesametimeothers,indifferentcountries,didnot,heregrettedtosay,soconductthemselves thatthechristianpeoplecouldfind intheiractionswhattheymightimitate. Tothesehewishedinthe presentlettertoopenhisheart-the heartofafather,palpitatingwith eagerloveatthesightofanailing son.Heaccordinglyaddshisown exhortationtothoseoftheBishops urgingthattheclergyshoulddaily strivetobecome"menofGod,"to usethelanguageoftheApostle. HisHolinessearnestlycommendsthe followingtexttotheattentionof theclergy"Berenewedinthespiritofyourmindandputonthe newmanwho,accordingtoGod,is createdinjusticeandholinessof truth"(Ephes.iv,23-4).Therealisationofthisideal,continueshis Holiness,willbe ABEAUTIFULANDMOSTACCEPTABLEGIFT.

Takingaretrospectoftheyearshe hasspentinthepriesthood,he thinksthatthehumanimperfections whatevertheymaybe,whichareto beregrettedappeartohavebeenin somewayexpiatedinexhortingand admonishingthemto"walkworthy ofGod,inallthingspleasing"(Coloss.i,10).Theexhortationconcernednotonlythewelfareofthe clergy,butalsothatofthepeople, becausetheycouldnotbeseparated fromoneanother.Apriestcould notbegoodorbadwithoutinfluencingothers.Thecharacterofhis actionsaffectedthepeople,andwhen ftwaspraiseworthyhowgreatwas theblessing! HisHoliness,there'tore,inhiscommunicationtothe
clergyinsists,inthefirstplace. on, SANCTITYOFLIFE.
Theyreceivedthepriesthoodnot merelyforthemselves,butforothers "Foreveryhighpriesttaken fromamongmenisordainedformen inthethingsthatappertaintoGod" (Hebr.v,1).ThiswasalsopointedoutbyChrist,who,toindicate whatkindofconductHelookedfor inthecaseofpriestscomparedthem tosalt,alsotolight.Thepriest, thenwasthelightoftheworld,the saltoftheearth.Hewasso,chieflyforthehandingdownofChristiantruth,butitcouldnotbedeniedthatsuchaninstitutioncounted almostasnothingifthepriestdid notconformbyexampletodowhat hetaughtbyword.Hearers,disdainfully,butnotwithoutreason, objected."Theyprofessthatthey knowGodhutintheirworksthey denyHim"(Tit.i,16).Where sanctitywasabsent,therecorruptionmusthavecreptin.According toChrist,dwellingonthesamecomparison,calledsuchpriestssavourlesssaltwhich"isgoodfornothinganymorebuttobecastout" andeven"tobetroddenonby men"(Matt.v,13).Theforceof thosewordswerethemoreevident inasmuchastheclergydischarged thedutiesofthepriestlyofficenot intheirownname,butinthatof ChristJesus."Letaman,"said theApostle,"soaccountofusasof theministersofChristandthedispensersofthemysteriesofGod"(I Corr.iv,1)"forChrist,therefore, weareambassadors"(IICorr.v, 201.OnthisaccountChristHimselfplacedtheminthecategorynot ofservantsbutoffriends:"Iwill notnowcallyouservants ButIhavecalledyoufriends becauseallthingswhatsoeverIhave heardofmyFatherIhavemade knowntoyou. Ihavechosenyouandhaveappointedyouthat youshouldgoandshouldbringforth fruit"(Johnxv,15,16).They weretherefore,tobringaboutin themselvesthepersonofChrist theyweretofilltheirofficeasambassadorsinsuchamannerasto complywithHiswishes.Now,since "firmfriendshipconsistedinhaving thesameinclinationsanddisinclinations"theywereboundtofeelas feltChrist,whowas"holy,innocent,undefiled(Hebr.vii,26!.As Hisambassadorstheyshouldgain theconfidenceofmenforHisdoctrinesandHislaws,observingthem inthefirstplacethemselves. When thecandidatefirstchosetoenterthe serviceofthesanctuarytheChurch wishedhimtodeclare"TheLordis theportionofmyinheritanceand ofmycup;itisThouthatwiltrestoremyinheritancetome"(Ps.xv, 5).InwhichwordssaidSt.Jerome theclericiswarnedthat"asone whoishimselftheportionofthe Lord,orhastheLordforhisportion,heshouldconducthimselflike amanwhopossessesandispossessesbytheLord"(Epflii,adNepotianumn.5).Andatthecommencementofhispriesthoodtheclericwas
remindedthat"theodourofhis lifeshouldbeadelighttotheChurch ofChrist,sothathemightraiseup thehouse,thatis,thechildrenof God,bypreachingandexample." Thereweresomewhothoughtand maintainedthatapriest'shighest dutyconsistedinwhollydevoting himselftothebenefitofothers. Wherefore,neglectingnearlyaltogetherthosevirtuesbywhichaman ishimselfperfected(virtueswhich theytermedpassive),theyasserted thatallone'sstrengthandzeal shouldbegiventothecultivation andpracticeoftheactivevirtues. Informerdaysthereweregreat schoolsinIreland,whereeverysort oflearningwastaughttoIncpeapie, andeventnepooresthadmoreKnowledgeatthattimethanmanyagentlemanhasnow. But,astothe priests,theirlearningwasaboveall sothatthefameofIrelandwentoverthewholeworld,andmanykings fromforeignlandsusedtosendtheir sonsallthewaytoIrelandtobe broughtupintheIrishschools.
Now,atthistimetherewasglittle boylearningatoneofthemwhowas awondertoeveryoneforhiscleverness.Hisparentswereonlylaboringpeople,andofcoursepoorbut youngashewas,andaspoorashe was,nokingorlord'ssoncould comeuptohiminlearning.Even themasterswereputtoshamefor whentheyweretryingtoteachhim hewouldtellthemsomethingthey badneverheardofbefore,andshow themtheirignorance.Oneofhis greattriumphswereinargument; andhewouldgoontillheprovedto youthatblackwaswhite,andthen whenyougavein,fornoonecould beathimintalk,hewouldturn roundandshowyouthatwhitewas black,ormaybe,thattherewasna colouratallintheworld.
