The Secretarybroughtunderthenotice ofthedelegatesthecircularofthe CentralCouncilaskingforthecooperationoftheGaelsthroughout thecountryinmakingupthefunds necessarytodefraytheexpensesofa teamoftwentyathletestorepresent IrelandatthePope'sJubileeSports inRome.Itistheintentionthat onthehistoricoccasionIreland,as isonlyherrightfromherathletic prowess,ifonnohighergrounds,be representedasaseparatenation, andthecountrythathasgivenHayesandFlanaganandmanyothersto

SpeakingofhisMissionary zeal,the"WexfordPeople,"says:Hispowerfullybrilliantsermonsat theRetreatwhichheconductedhere lastAprilwillnotbesoonforgotten bythehundredswhohadtheprivilegeofhearingthem.Itwasonly theotherdaywhenhegaveaRetreattotheIndustrialSchoolchildrenintheMercyConvent,andeverybodywasdelightedtoseetheeloquentRedemptoristoncemorein Wexford. MartinSheridan,oneoftheIrishAmericancontingentwhowonso muchdistinctionfortheiradopted countryattheOlympicGamesin London,actedwhilethereasaspecialcorrespondentofthe"Evening World"ofNewYork.Hiscabled dispatchtothepaperofJuly22nd, isheaded"ByMartinSheridan, theEveningWorld,'Expert,with theAmericaOlympicTeaminLondon."Thedispatch,says,"Theonlybitternessdisplayedbytheboys oftheIrish-AmericanAthleticClub isshowntowardsLeahy,ofDublin, whocompetedfortheUnitedKingdominthehighjumpHorganof theNewYorkAthleticClub,who alsocompetedfortheUnitedKingdom;WalshoftheIrish-American AthleticClub,ofNewYork,alsoin linefortheUnitedKingdom,and Roche,whosescorelikewisegoesto JohnBull.Allfourofthosemen claimthattheyarescoringpoints forIreland,butthiscontention, whilepatriotic,isnotpractical,becausetheveryobjecttheyseekisdefeatedbythemselves.TheIrishmenwanttobeatEngland,andthe onlywaytheycoulddothatwould betostayathome.Theeightand one-thirdpointsscoredbythosefour menweretakenfromtheAmerican teamandrecordedforEngland.No amountofpatrioticargumentsan changethatfact."

Therehasbeenaremarkablesequeltotheoutrageperpetratedin Aedara(DnneeallnewChurchon16, Novemberlost,endofwhichJohn Evanswasconvicted.Ttwillberecalledthatonthatdatenamedthe sacredvessels,missal,andothererthemaninchargeofthecemetery,tidesforuseonthealtarinthe

Anextensivesectionofathickly populateddistrictinDerryCity, saysan'IrishExchange,hasbeen thrownintoastateofconsternation byaseriesofextraordinaryand mysteriousnocturnaloccurrences.

Thecottage,standsasthelastof astreetrow,onalittleeminenceat thejunctionoftwothoroughfares, namely,ofHolywellstreetand Hogg'sFolly.Thereisacellarbeneaththegroundfloorofthecottage,anditisfromthiscellarthat uncannynoiseshavebeenforsome timeemanatingnightly.

Notonlyhavetheseinexplicable noisesbeenheardbytheinmatesof thehouse,butontwonightsoflast weektheyreachedtheearsofneighbours,dwellingontheoppositeside ofthestreet.Ononeofthenights thefigureofawomanwasseenpassingslowlyfromoneapartmentto anotherwithinthehouse.

Thelatterremarkablecircumstance wasamongtheparticularsmade knowntothepolice,whenareport oftheextraordinaryaffairwasconveyedtothem.Thephantomfemalefigurewasdescribedasbeingclothedinaflowingrobeofpearl-gray colour.

Thespectacleinthestreetatnight recentlywaswhollyuncommon. A numberofyoungmenwhoheardthe newsofthemysteriousnoisesdecidedtotestthetruthofthematter forthemselvesbywaitingalittle distancefromthehouseoutsideon theroadtillafterthemidnighthour Somestatedsubsequentlytheyheard nosoundsfromthehouse.Others assertedpositivelythattheyheard thesoundsof"heavyfootstepsin thecellar,"thoughatthattimeit wasknownthatthecellarwasabsolutelyunoccupied.

Thefamilyremovedtoanother dwelling. Theykeptadoginthe cellar,andonthenightswhenthe strangesoundswereheardtheanimaltoreatthefloorfranticallywith hispaws.Thisincidentsuggested tosomethatratsmighthavebeen atthebottomofthematter,buta verycarefulsearchmadeinthecellarfailedtodetecttheslightest traceofrats.

Ireland'sNewEra.

Mrs.Dryhurst,writingtotheLondon"DailyChronicle"inappreciatorytermsoftheGaelicLeague FestivalandexhibitionheldinDublin,inAugustlast,declaresthatit wasnotonlythelanguagethathad risenfromthedustheapsofthepast therewasalsoamarvellousquickeningofIreland'sindustrialandartisticlife,andbothcraftsmenandartistsweremarchingshouldertoshoulder,asinthedaysoftradeguilds andwidespreadEuropeancommerce, suchasMrs.Green,inherhistory of"IrelandandItsUndoing,"described.

"IspentSaturdayamongtheindustries,"addsMrs.Dryhurst,"and wassurprisedanddelightedtofind theadvanceallroundinmaterial andworkmanship. Myhousewifely soulrejoicedalsotofindthatmany householdgoodsIhadlongcoveted weretobehadinIrelandforhalfor athirdofthepricewegiveinLondon. Duringthecourseofaninterview betweenarepresentativeoftheDublin"WeeklyFreeman,"andMartin Sheridan,oftheU.S.AthleticOlympicteam,thegreatIrish-American Championexpressedhimselfvery pointedlywithregardtoEnglishfair playintheOlympicGames.Replyingtothequestion,"Howdidyour teamcomeoutoftheGames?" Martinsaid "Well,thereweretwenty-yetiea trackandfieldeventsdecidedatthe Stadium,andtheUnitedStates teamwonfifteenofthem.England, withtheassistanceofIrelandand Scotland,wonsevenofthem,and theothersweredividedoverseveral countries.TheU.S.Teamcame solelyforfieldandtrackathletics,andthatisasummaryresult -15eventsto8againstEngland, Scotland,andIreland(combined), and15eventsto12againstall-competingcountries."TheU.S.Team madeseveralrecordsindifferentevents,andthesewere-HighJump Olympicrecord,longjumprunning (do),polejump(do),discusGreek style(do.),400metreshurdle,world'srecord,110metres(do.),800metresworld'srecord."Sheridanalsoclaimedthattheywonthe400 metresflat,andthatifCarpenter's timehadbeendeclaredthatitalso wouldbefoundtobeaworld'srecord. Thearticleon"Labour"strongly deprecatedthegrowingtendencyin theWestern,andsomeoftheEasternStates,toblindlyopposeand decryLabour;notwithstandingthe factthatLabouradministrations havebroughtaboutthegreatdemocraticreformsatpresentexistentin Australia.LabourPartiesdonot holdoutanyinducementstotheir supportersinthesocialline;they areunabletoconferbenefitsontheir followers,inthewayofGovernment sinecuresandremunerativepositions.

Thethirdpaperread,wasoneon the"LiteraryTalentoftheSociety."Thewritercontendedthat themembersfailedtoavailthemselvesasfullyastheyought,ofthe literarybenefitsderivablefromcontributorstothejournal.

Thenextpaperwasonedealing withthelaw,anditsdifferentrelationstothevariouspositionsin life.Thispaper,whichwasofa veryeducatingnature,clearlyshowedthataknowledgeofthelawisof considerablebenefit,andfinancial saving.Thewriter,whohadagood graspofhissubject,alsoshowed thatthephysicians,merchants,architects,andothers,gavedifferent phasesofthelaw,relatingtotheir variousprofessions,aknowledgeof whichwouldconsiderablybenefit them.

Thefifthpaperoftheseriesdealt withthedelicatequestionofthe "ToastofthePopeatCatholic Banquets."Hecontendedthatthe systemofbeatingaboutthebushin proposing"PopeandKing,""King andPope,"bedispensedwith,and thenameofKingbeeliminated, thusleavingtheoneandonlynenessarynameinsuchatoast,viz., thePope.

Inordertounderstandwhythe PopehasrejectedtheFrenchAssociations,"MutualitesApprouvees"socalled,suggestedbyBriandandClemenceau,itissufficienttoknowthat theproposedorganizationswereto beabsolutelyindependentoftheauthorityofthebishops.Theymight legallynotonlycontain,butbecois, trolledby,membersoutofcommunionwiththeChurchitself.Asan offsettotheunintelligentcriticism oftheSovereignPontiff'saction,to hereadinanumberofanti-Catholic publications,wequotethesepara-

Beforehisbirth(accordingtoone ofthesetraditions),themotherof St.Columb-Killhadadream,"which posterityhasacceptedasagraceful andpoeticalsymbolofherson'scareer. HisnextschoolwasGlasnevin. WhilethereanothermiraclewasperformedbytheSaint.Thecellsof thestudentswereremovedinamomentfromonesideoftheriverto theother. Hewaspreparedfor ordinationtheyearoftheBuidhe ConnaillorYellowPlague.Asthe motherschoolwasnowbrokenup Columb-KillnowreturnedtohisbelovedandNativeNorth.ThespiritofMonasticismwasnowhispassion.Hethrewhimselfheartand soulintothefoundingofMonasteries. St.Columb-KillfoundedthefollowingMonasteriesinIreland,Derry furrow,Kells,Swords,Boyle,Rap hoe,Drumhome.

Oneofthemostimportantduties ofthemonksinthosedayswasthe transcribingofmanuscripts.St.Columb-Killlovedthisduty.HetranscribedtheBookoffurrow,the fourGospelsandBookofKells.He issaidtohavetranscribed300Books inall.

HispassionforBooks(allmanuscript,ofcourse,inthosedays,and ofgreatrarityandvalue)wasdestinedtoleadhimintothatgreat offenceofhislife,whichhewasafterwardstoexpiatebyapenanceso grievous.

AndSt.Patrick,inspeakingof theSaintandhisbirth-place,says, "Wondernomorebeholdtheland fromthisstreamNorthwardsneeds noblessingfrommeforasonshall behorntherewhoshallbecalled theDoveoftheChurches,andhe shallblessthatlandinhonourof whomGodhasthisdayprevented mydoingso."

AsachildhisguardianAngeloftenappearedtohimandinreplyto theAngelhesaidhelikedWisdom andChastityaboveallthevirtues andGodinhisgoodnessendowed withthethreeVirtuesofVirginity, WisdomandProphecy.

ThefirstSchooloftheSaintwas wasMoville.Whilehere,hisnovitiatemaybesaidtobeasternone, plentyofhardstudyandpoorfare. WhileatMolvilleheperformedthe miracleofchangingwaterintowine, andfromthistimeforwardhisfame grewandwasregardedwonderful amongGod'sSaints.

St.Columb-Kill'snextschoolwas Clonardandhestudiedthereunder GermaintheBard. Thetwowere readingtogetheroutofdoors,ata littledistancefromeachother,when ayounggirlappearedinthedist antepursuedbyarobber.Atthe sightoftheoldmanthefugitive madeforhimwithallherremainingstrength,hopingnodoubttoobtainsafetyintheauthorityexercisedthoughoutIrelandbytheNationalPoets.Germain,ingreattroublecalledhispupiltohisaidto defendtheunfortunatechild,who wastryingtohideherself,under theirlongrobes,whenthepursuer reachedthespot.Withouttaking anynoticeofherdefenders,he struckherintheneckwithhislance,

Hewenteverywhereinsearchof volumeswhichhecouldborrowor copy oftenexperiencingrefusals, whichheresentedbitterly.Inthis wayoccurredthedecisiveevent whichchangedthedestinyColombKillandtransformedhimfroma wanderingpoetandardentbookworm,intoaMissionaryandApostle.Whilevisitingoneofhisformertutors,Finian,hefoundmeans tocopyclandestinelytheAbbott's Psalter,byshuttinghimselfupat nightsin,theChurchwherethebook wasdeposited.Finianclaimedthe copyahenfinishedontheground thatitwasthechildoftheoriginal BookandtheKingDiarmuid,when thedisputewasreferredtohimdecidedthatthetranslationbelonged toFinian.Hisjudgmentwasgivenintherusticphrase Toevery cowhercalf,and,consequently,to everyhookitscopy.Columb-Kill wasannoyedwiththisdecision.Anothermatteroccurredatthistime, also,whichstillfurtherincensedhim againsttheKing.Ayoungprince, whowaspursuedforcommittingan involuntarymurder,tookrefuge withColumb-Kill,butwasseized andputtodeathbytheKing.

TheReverendLecturercametothe conclusionthatasColumb-Killhad foundedsomanyMonasteriesinIreland,thatanewdevelopmenttook placeintheSaintandhencehe thoughtithisdutytoleaveIreland andfoundotherMonasteriesand carrytheLightofChristianityto otherlands.

Atlastthesaddaycame,theday ofpartingfromhisbelovednative land.Whocantellwhatsorrowhis departurebrought.totheloving heartofColumb-Kill. Howeverabattle,Cool-Drewny wasfoughtbetweenKingDiarmuid, commandingtheHy-Niallsof.the SouthandtheHy-Niallsofthe Northembracingthebrethrenand kinsmenofColumb-Kill.KingDiarmuidandhisarmywerebeaten, andthebattleresultedingreatloss oflife.

HereishowDr.Healytouchingly describesColumb-Kill'sdeparture -"Whentheycametosetsail,not onlytheMonksofDerry,butthe BishopsandClergyandpeoplefrom allthecountryroundaboutcrowded totheshoretohidfarewelltotheir belovedSaint.Thenagreatwail wasbornonthebreezethatfilledthe lightsailsoftheCurrackseventhe wildsea-birdshoveredroundthebarquesasifloathtoleavetheblessed Columb-Kill.Hisheartwasfull, andhiseyesweredimwithtears, ashesawtheoakwoodsofDerry andthehillsofInnishowanfading, itmightbeforeverfromhisview." Forcenturiestheearlytrainingof thechildrenhadbeenChristian,and almostwhollyinthehandsofthe religiousOrders,andinexecuting theanti-clericalpolicyoftheCorabesgovernment,whichaimedatthe wholesalede-Christianizationof France,theauthoritieswerewell awarethatFrancecouldneverbe fullyde-Catholicizedunlessagenerationofchildrenwaseducatedin Godlessschools.

Consequentlytheysetaboutsecularizingthepublicteachinginstitutionsbydoingawaywiththechief emblemofChristianity,theCrucifix,andanythingthatrecalledto mindtheCatholicChurch.

ThepeopleofFrance,saysM.Harare,ineffect,wouldnotbetrueto theiressentialinstinctsofcivilisation,iftheyfailedtorealise,onat leasttheirchildren'sbehalf,theeducativevalueofreligion,inasfaras itistheonlyinfluencethatcan touchtheheart.Norhavethey failed.

Onebleaknightlastwinter,the bodyofanapparentlymurderedinfantwasfoundatthedoorstepof oneofthenewCatholicschoolsin thetownofLille.

Immediatelytheanti-clericalpress andalltheanti-Catholicofficials f`wereupinarms,atwhichthey pointedoutasconclusiveevidenceof theclassofwomenwhowereemployedbytheCatholicstogiveinstructiontotheirchildren. Itwasestablishedafterwards,as LaCroixdemonstratedbeyondrefute,thattheinfant,whichwasnewly-born,andhaddiedoncomingintotheworld,hadbeen"strangled" afteritsdeath,andhadbeenplaced byenemiesofthefemaleteachersin questionoutsidetheirinstitution.

Fromthatmomenton,thefraud beingsopalpable,thenumbersin theschool,farfromdecreasing,begantoincreaserapidly.

AndsotheGovernmentfindsitself powerlesstoeffectanythingtothe detrimentoftheseschoolswhichare asinviolable,fromalegalstandpoint,asthechurches.

Boththechurchandtheschoolare assacredaspersonalproperty,and bothareincreasinginnumbersas thetimegrows.

Itisremarkablethatallthecandidates,intownandcountryreferredagainandagaintothe Educationquestion,butitismoreremarkableandmoresurprisinghowthey ignoredtheexistenceoftheCatholicSchools.

Therewas--asfarasweknow-just oneexception,namely,Mr.Charles H.Layman,theMemberforNelson. ReferringtotheEducationQuestion Mr.Laymansaid:-"Wemustnot forgetthegreatworkthatisbeing carriedonbythemanypr'vs schoolsestablishedthoughoutthis State.Weknowtheworthofthese schoolstheyareacredittothose whohaveestablishedthem. We mustrememberthattheseSchools havebeenandareanenormoussavingtotheState,andweoughtto acknowledgethatweowethemat theveryleastadeepdebtofgratitude."

Itmattersnottowhatquarter oneturns,oneseesthatthe"schools ofatheism,"asthenewinstitutions aretermed,arebeingdenouncedby parentsandguardians,andthatthe newindependentchurch-foundationsandOrdersareeverywherebeingencouragedtobuildschoolswhich shalltaketheplaceoftheoldestablishments. Itiscertainthen,saysHavard, thattheeducationofthegrowing generationsofFranceistoremain weCatholic,andthattheanti-clerical partyseesitselfbeatenagain,and theboastedde-Christianisationof Francepostponedsinedie.

Ofthegeneralattitudeoftheparentstowardsthe"schoolsofatheism,"Havardsaysthatitisincontestablyshownbythefactthat sincethedenudingoftheschoolsof theirreligiousemblemsandsymbols, thepeopleofFrancehave,outof theirownpockets,contributedto thefoundingof16,000schoolsin whichtheirchildrenshall,asof yore,betaughtthetruths.ofthe CatholicFaith. Thoughtheanti-clericalfaction

Theatheisticschool,onthecontrary,saysHavard,ispractically denuded.Ithagnoinfluence;itis shunnedevenbyanti-clericalparents whohavetheirchildren'swelfareat heart.Itsillsuccessissoapparent thatoneisconsciousofareaction againstitsabsoluteuselessnessin thepagesofpractical-mindednewspaperswhicharebynomeans.welldisposedtotheChurch. Hasitcometothis,asksHavard. thattheenemyhasinveryshame toadmithispowerlessness? Itwouldseemlikeit.

AsSainte-Beuvesays:"Youmay chaseCatholicityfromherchurches andfromyourstatute-hooks,yet,if itheintheair,whatavailsany weaponyoubrineagainstit?"

Theelectionsareoverwehope someoftheelectedwillnotentirely forgetallthepromisesmadebefore theelections.

Thisismorethananyoftheothercandidateshadthecourageof saying theso-called"workers' friends"didnotevenrecogniseus, butperhapstheyareasignorantof theworkdonebytheCatholic Schools,astheyareofotherquestionsthataffectthelifeoftheState wemayperhapsforgivetheirhearts attheexpenseoftheirheads.We aregladthatMr.Laymanhasbeen returnedbyauoverwhelmingmajority.Fromstarttofinishduringthe wholeofcampaignheactedasa straightouthonestfighter.ThePremierandoneoftheMinistersofferedtocometoMr.Layman'sassistance,but"Harry"preferredtofight hisownbattle.Hetoldtheelectors thatiftheydidnotconsiderhimthe propermantorepresentthemhe didnotwanttohavehimselfthrust downthethroatsoftheelectorsby theGovernment.Thatcertainlydenotesanindependent,unselfishand noblespirit.Anditwasinstrange contrasttotheplanfollowedbyhis opponent,whobadSenatorsLynch andNeedham,aswellasMessrs. BathandO'Loghlenvigorouslysupportinghiscandidature.

Thenightbeforetheelectiona meanandmostcontemptibletrick wastriedintheshapeofadodger circulatedintheprincipalpolling places.Thisdodgerwassupposedto bolsterupachargeagainstMr.Laymanpersonally.Itfailed,asnoone couldforamomentbelievethatthe gentlemanwhofoughtsohonourably couldheevenaccusedofanything lowormean.WecongratulateMr. Layman,andwehopethatinthe Ifuture,asinthepast,hewillenjoy ithethoroughconfidenceoftheNelsonelectors.

AmoredistressingcaseofbilousnessthanthatofMr.R.J.Little, ofBaroonaHill,Rosalie,Brisbane, wouldhedifficulttoimagine.This manhadbeensubjecttobiliousattacksfromboyhood,andhiscureby BileBeansafterallotherremedies provedunavailingisallthemoreremarkable.

Mr.Littlesays:-"Iwassubject tobadbiliousattacks,and,although,Itriedmanyremediesinthe hopeofgettingridofthem,Ifound nothingtobenefitmesomuchas BileBeans. Soterriblewerethe headacheswhichafflictedmeattimes,thatIcouldnotevenstoop,and hadtoleavemyworkwiththepain. Incomparsonwithasojourningle,sothatsoonthewholebecomes thelandconsecratedbythefootstepsofJesusChrist,ithasbeen trulysaidthatnoamountofstudy andresearchmaybeconsideredsufficientforacomprehensiveandfamiliarknowledgeoftheScriptures. Althoughto-dayaroundtheBooks oftheGospels,thestruggleagainst Christianityiswagedmorefiercely thanithasbeenduringanyother period,manyapparentlygravedifficultiessoisedbyinfidelsmighthave beenwelldeemedtoopuerileforconsiderationhadtheoriginalscenes involvedbeenintimatelyknownto theobjectors.Astudyofthecountryanditsinhabitantsservesnot onlytoexplainScripturaldifficulties buttorender'aknowledgeofthe HolyWriteasyandpleasant.And soconducivedoesitbecometosolidifyonesfaiththatapostateshave beenknowntotravelthrough.Tudea, Galilee,andSyria,forthepurpose ofeomparinstheseplaces,theirpeoples,andtheircustomswithdescriptionsofthem-howeverslightthese descriptions-tohefoundinthe Scriptures,withaviewtoheableto believeagain.ForPalestine,inthe twentiethcentury,notwithstanding allthevicissitudesthathavehappenedinthemeantime,islittlechangedfromwhatitwasinthetime ofourLord.Afewinstances,therefore,culledfrombooks,hearsay,and personalexperiences,oftheconformitythatisstillevidentintheHoly LandbetweentheScripturenesse-*Aveandthecustomsofthepeople, maybescrutinizedwithprofitand pleasure.

IntheGospelofSt.John(1035),wefindthatJesus,aftercuring themanbornblind,andupbraiding thePhariseesfortheirduplicity,introduceshimselfastheirleader, andSaviourbymakingareference totherelationstheysawexisting betweentheshepherdandhisflock Andthesheephearhisvoice; andhecallethhisownsheepby name;andleadeththemout.

Andwhenhehathletouthisown sheep,hegoeth'beforethem and thesheepfollowhimbecausethey kisawhisvoice.Butastrangerthey follownot,butflyfromhim,because theyknownotthevoiceofstrangers.

Downtothisdaythetraveller findsthescenedescribedbyJesus ChristforHissimpleaudience,illustratedtothefullestextentonthe hillsandplainsofPalestine.When twoShepherdsattheheadoftheir flocks-foraPalestinianshepherdalwaysleads,neverdriveshisSheepmeetbythefountainoronthehighway,theyneverfailtoengagein oneofthoseprolongedchatsthat sowishdelighttheOriental. As amatterofcourse,ittakesthe flocksbutashorttimetointermin-

oneconfusedmass.Insuchacase aWesternpastorwouldproveanythingbutaStoic;notso,however, hisEasternbrother.Farewellsaid, eachstalksinoppositedirections bothcryingout"Tahho!""Tahho"withouteventroublingto lookovertheirshoulders;andsoon thewhitemassisseparated,every sheepfollowshisownshepherd-for it"knowshisvoice"-andbyno chancearethemembersofoneflock everdiscoveredamongthoseofanother"becausetheyknownotthe voiceofstrangers."Yetbothpastorshadusedthesameword,and neitherhadadogtoassistintheseparation,asthePalestinianshepherdnevermakesuseofsuchan animal.

Withaviewtoinspirehishearers withgenerosityofcharacter,our Lordaddressingthemultitudethat followesHimandHisdisciples,held outtothemtheexampleofthelarge-heartedcorn-measurer"Give," saidJesusChrist,"anditshallbe giventoyougoodmeasureandpresseddownandshakentogetherand isinninsovershalltheygiveunto yourbosom."(Luke6:38.)And to-dayinPalestineaboutthebeginningofAugust,whentheheadofa familyproceedstopurchasehis stockofcornforthewinter,the wordsofChristarevividlyillustrated.Afteroneormoresessionsne cessaryforthemakingofthebargain-foreverytransactionofthe kindintheEastisdoneslowlyand solemnly,amidmanycupsofcoffee, andnumberlesscigarettes-theservicesofaprofessionalcorn-measurer arerequisitioned.Emptyingthe sacksupontheground,theprofessionalseatshimselfbesidetheheap, andfillshiswoodenmeasuretothe brim.Thenheshakesitrepeatedly, heapsonmorecornandturnsit around,continuingtheprocessuntil quitesatisfiedthemeasurecanhold nomoregrain.Thentheoperation iscomplete,andthereyouare"a goodmeasure,presseddown,and shakentogether,runningover." AndthusfromthedaysofAbraham,andfromhisdowntoourown time,hascornbeen'measuredforthe paterfamilias.

AstheinhabitantsofPalestineconfinednearlyalltheirattentionto agriculturalandpastoralpursuits, implementsandcustomsconnected withthefieldarenaturallymost prolificinshowinghowwelltheBibledepictsthelifeoftheOriental husbandmanfromtheearliesttimes. Forinstance,oneyetfindsthatthe workofseparatinggrainfromchaff isdoneinthemostprimitivemannerknown.Twooxenareyokedtogetheranddrivenrepeatedlyover andoveracorn-strewnfloor.As neitherbearsamuzzletheyindulge

ThroughoutthepagesofHoly Writ,especiallyintheBookofGenesis,manyreferences,directandindirect,aremadetothereadyhospitalityextendedsocheerfullytotravellers. Notroubleorexpense seemstobeconsideredtoomuchin ordertorefreshthetiredwayfarer, andmakehimfeelperfectlyathome. "Turnin,Iprayyou,intoyourservant'shouse,andtarryallnight andwashyourfeet,andyeshall riseupearlyandgoonyourway." (Genesis1920.)

Suchwasthewelcomegiventothe wayfarerinthetimeofthePatriarchs,andsuchisitto-dayamong thetypicalnativeswithoutanyapparentdiminutionofthepristine simplicityandsinglenessofpurpose. OnreachingavillageinPalestine thetravellerisconductedspontaneouslytothe"GuestChamber,"a. roomspeciallysetasideinevery townandhamletforhospitablepurposes,wherehisfeetarewashed,his clothescleansed,andthebestthe placecanaffordissetbeforehim withtheutmostkindnessandwithoutathoughtofsubsequentremuneration.Ifhefindshimselfamong well-disposeddeserttribes,heisled totheguest-tent,wherehotcakes, sweetmilk,orlamborkidareimmediatelypreparedforhisrefreshment; andsosacredarethelastsof hospitalityheldamongthemthat thechiefholdshimselfresponsible bothforthecomfortandpersonal safetyofthevisitorwhileheshares hisdeserthome.

Howeverridiculousandold-fashionedallthismayappearinour eyes,ifaPalestinianpeasantsaw twoAmericans,ortwoguropeansof along-standingacquaintanceship, separatingafterafewwordsanda handshake-nomatterhowheartygreatwouldhehishilarityanddeep hispityforourstateofmodernci vilization.
