ThecompetitioninOratoryatthe OireachtasonTuesdayeveningwas enlivenedbyanunexpecteddevelopment,whichprovidedagreatdealof interestingandamusingdiscussion. Thejudgesselectedasasubjectfor theimpromptuspeechinIrish,the kilt,or"gilleadhbeag."Oneof thecompetitors,MichaelSmidic,B. A.,B.L.,ofBlackrock,aprominent GaelicLeaguer,deliveredavigorous attackonthewearingofthekilt, maintainingthatitwasanunhealthyandunhygienic,andhadbeenabandonedbyallcivilisednations.A numberofgentlemenwereinthe hall,wearingwhattheyclaimedto betheIrishnationalcostume,and oneofthem,Cormac0Cadhla,the GaelicLeagueorganiser,sprangon totheplatform,resplendentincloak greenkilt,andflowingmantle,and, amidloudapplausedeliveredaheatedspeechindefenceofthegarbhe wore,assertinghefounditinevery waymorehealthyandsuitablethan the"foreignbreeches"("briste gallda").HewaspromptlyfollowedbyanotherChampionoftheIrishcostume,"AnPaorach,"whois celebratedasaplayeroftheIrish warpipes,whomaintainedthatthe evidencewasoverwhelmingthatthe kiltwasthegenuinecostumeworn byourancestors,andpointedto hisownhealthasevidenceofthe factthatthecostumewasnotunhealthyorunhygienic.TheHon. CroaghPatrick Pilgrimage. OnSundaynearlytwenty-thousand peoplemadethetoilsomeascent fromMurrisktothesummitofCroaghPatrick,despitethefactthatthe weatherconditionsforsuchanarduousundertakingwereunfavourable. Thepilgrimswererepresentativeof everyclassofthecommunity,and notafewofthemcamefromfardistantandwidelyseparatedlands, suchasAustraliaandtheUnited StatesofAmerica.
Thehugeprocessionupthesteep mountainsidewasveryimpressive, andtheonlookercouldnotfailto notethegreatreligiousfervourand snthu'Lasmwhichinspiredthepilgrimstoundertakethewearyjourney.Gentleandsimple,oldand young,someattiredinthelatestand mostup-to-datestyle,othersinhome madefrieze,andnotafewinhare feetmin'leatogetherinthemighty throng,iewhichweretobeseen memewh gipassedthepatriarchialsprivi `ife,andmanyyouthsof tender
THECLERICALPILGRIMS. wareverynumerousandincludedtwo verydistinguishedecclesiastics,namely,theMostReverendDr.Carr, ArchbishopofMelbourne,andthe MostReverendDr.Healey,ArchbishopofTuam.Tothelatterisdue therevivalofthesepilgrimagesin honourofSt.Patrick,andcertainly thewonderfulsuccesswhichhasattendedthemyearafteryearmustbe asourceofjoytohisGrace,andto hisenergeticadministrator,theReverendM.M'Donald,Westport.Inadditiontosecularclergypresentthere werenumerousrepresentativesofthe religiousOrders.ConspicuousamongthoseweretwoFrenchPriestsof theOrderofSt.CamillusdeLellis, whocameoverwiththebeautiful bannerfromLourdes,whereitwas blessedwithimposingceremonyin whichaCardinal,amitredAbbot, andfifteenBishopstookpart.inpresenceof40.000people.

OttFriday,lothinst.,herExcellency,theCountessofAberdeenarri- vedinCashelbythe1.20p.m.train occupyingasalooncarriage.HerExcellencywasaccompaniedbySir WilliamThompson,andSirWilliam Butlerhappenedtotravelbythe sametrain.OnarrivalatCashel stationalargenumberofrepresent- ativecitizenswereontheplatform. HerExcellencywasmetatGoldscrossstationbytheBALLAGHWAR PIPERS'BAND,whoalsoaccompan- iedhertoCashel.Onthetrainar- rivingatCashel,herExcellencywas metbythefollowingmembersofthe Corporation:-Messrs.MichaelDev- itt,Chairman;ThomasWalsh("Sen- tinel"),ThomasHarty,Cornelius Carroll,andChristopherConnors.
