Anoteofwarningandofdutywas soundedonTuesdaynightintheHibern:anHall,bythedifferentspeakers,whoeloquentlypleadedforthe

speechofafewnightsago,said: "IftheCatholicsofW.A.wereblessedwiththesameloyalspiritand thesamefirmresolveandthesame unitytofightfortheirjust.rightsas thatwhichobtainsamongtheCatholicsofEnglandto-day,againstoverwhelmingopposition,theGovernmentwouldnotbeable'topailpetrate andtoperpetuatetheinjusticetowardsourschoolswhichtookplace twelveyearsago."TheEnglishCatholicsofto-dayareashiningexampleofsystematicunity,andpractical determinationindefenceofreligionineducation,andoftheirright tobePaidbytheGovernmentfor theworktheydischargeintheeducationofYouth.DespitetheoppositionoftheNon-Conformistsandthe spinelesslethargyoftheAnglicans, theEnglishCatholics,thanksto theirloyalty,theirfidelity,theirunityandorganisationareinamost hopefulposition,andtheyhaveevery reasontoexpectthattheGovernmentwillcontinuetosubsidisetheir schools,inotherwordspaythemfor educatingtheirportioncithepopulation.Here,inW.A.thesubsidy waslostthroughlackofCatholic orranisation.TheBishopcalledupontheCatholicstostandby andtheydidnot,ifweexceptthe fewwhowerefaithful.To-day,emboldenedbyourimpotency.another GovernmentaimsablowetourSecondarySchools.Alreadyourpeoplepayabout£40,000perannumfor theluxuriousupkeepoftheProtestantStateSchools.Theypayalmostasmuchfortheupkeepoftheir ownschools,andnowtheGovernmentbackedupbyunprincipledand bigotedorganisationsaredetermined tolavishseveraladditionalthousandsofpoundsinbuildinganyunnecessarysystemofStateSecondiry Schools,andtocompelCatholicsto paytheirproportiontowardstheir evipment,althoughtheyreceiveno returnwhateverfortheirmoney.In otherwordsaChristianGovernment, (inthe20thcenturylegalisestherobberyofupwards0f£Ro.n00peryear from40,000Catholics--andfornootherreasonthanthatthesaidCatholicswillnotbetraytheirreligionand proclaimthemselvesProtestants,Atheists,orMussulmans. Catholics eredeniedjusticebecausetheyare Catholics.Suchasystemwereimpossibleifourlaitywere organised,andprepared,like theirco-religionistsinEngland togointotheforefrontofthebattle fortheircivilandeducationalrights. Thetimehascomeforthelaityto moveindefenceoftheirrights.It ismorethedutyofthelaitythenof theclergytodemandsomeadequate returnferthethousandsofwhichan unjustGovernmentpersistentlydeprivesthemandtheir'children.This chroniciniquitycanheundoneby organisation,andweheartilycommendtheHibernianSocietyasanucleuswhich.inthenearfuturewill sodevelopthattheGovernmentwill finditapowertoreckonwithinits depredations.Itistimethatwe shouldutiliseforGodandtruththe enginewhichtheenemiesofour Faithhavemanipulatedsodeftly andwithsuchheroicmaliceandinjusticeforthespreadofindifference endthedestructionofinnocence.

Thepointthatstruckusmost forciblyintheleadingspeecheswas theurgentneedthatexistedforCatholicorganisation.Association,or ereanisatiftisthecharacteristicaim andspiritofourage.Associationscovereveryfieldofhumanactivity,anditisbyunionsandcombinationsandSocietiesthattheunits thatmakethemup,areprotectedagainsttheselfishnessandtyrannyof trussandcapitalists.whilethelatterresorttothesamedefenceagainst theiremployees.TheChurch,ton, shouldhaveherorganisaftons.She isoverintouchwiththespiritof thea::e-atleastineverycountry wheresheenjoysordinaryfreedom andneverwasorganisationneeded morethanat.thepresenttime.NeverwastheScriptureaxiomquotedby oneofthespeakersonTuesdaynight moreapplicabletoCatholicsthanit isto-day,"Woetohimthatisaloee.forwhenhefallethhebathno onetolifthimup.".

ThehistoryoftheCatholicChurch inWestAustraliaemphatically.demonstratesthetruthofthisaxiom.

Idogmaticsbeliefitssourcemustbe soughtinanancestrywhichwas stronglyreligious.Principleisa sortofstructuralstrength,imbeddedinthecharacterassteelrods areembeddedinre-enforcedconcrete. Trueprincipleinformsthewhole man,andisrevealedinhisevery, wordandaction.Manyofourgreat churchmen,saysanAmericanpublication,ofthelastcenturywerenotableexamplesofthis:qualityinall itssymmetryandcompleteness, SuchamanwasArchbishopHughes andourownII;shopFenwick.Such amanwasthelamentedMr.Clevehan'dheTherehavebeenmenprominentto adegreeinpublicaffairswhosedevotiontoprincipleconfineditselfto keepingtheirword.Unscrupulousin themain,skilledinallmannerof evasions,whentheyhadoncemadea promisenothinewouldinducethem tobreakit.Therearemenseeminglywithoutany_standardofhonour wherewomenareconcerned,whoyet scorntotellalie,orplaytheeavesdropper.Suchsporadicgoodtraitsincharacter,otherwisedepraved arefarfrommeasuringuptothe standardoftrueprinciple.Theyare ratherpraiseworthynotionserected intoafetich,justasamanmaybe slovenlyindress,butinvar:ablyclean shaven.Neverthelessthesetraitsindicateatypeofmindwhichhedthe strengthtobenot*,butturnedto baseness.

Amanofprineinlehasanenviable standinginthecommunityaswell establishedasthehighestratingof DunorBradstreet,andthisirrespectiveofwealthorability.Acuriousroughjusticegovernstheunorganisedelectoratewhichfixesthis. Certainmenwhohavegonefarand arepowerfulinbusinessandpolitic canneverwinthistitle.Theyare irrevocablysetdownasunprincipled. Ontheotherhand,inconspicuouspersons,wholackeitherthefacultyor opportunityofsuccess,orwhofail Becausetheywillnotbuyitatthe Priceofdbshonour,areaccordedthe titlebyunanimousvote.Itisthe tributemenpaytoprinciplewhereverfound.Theymayprofitbythe ruggedhonestyofamantocheat him,theymayjointheshiftyinsheclyschemes,butinvariablytheydenytheirvotetothelatterandgive ittotheformer.

The"honesty"ofthe"street"is atechnicalterm.Itisasortof Scotchverdict,Few,itanyofthe defaultersofthelasttwenty-five yearswereeverratedamongtheinitiatedasmenofprinciple. They keptastandingbeforethepublicby theirskill,urbanityandsocialactivities,buttheyneverdeceivedtheir intimates.

Mentolerateanacquaintanceas longashekeepsoutofthedock, buttheevidencethatisdisclosedin almosteverytrialforembezzlement showsthatthetrusteesoftheplunderedinstitutioncouldhaveaverted thecatastropheiftheyhadascertainedthevague,yetsureratingof theunorganisedelectorate,concerningtheirdelinquentcashierorpresident.Thedisgracedmanhadlong agogivenproofthathewaswithoutprinciple.

TheManofPrinciple.

Thereisatitlewhichanyrightly constitutedman.howeverhumble, maywin,anditisoffarmoreworth fortheindividualandthecommunitythanallthedegreesoftheuniversities.Itisthetitleof"aman ofprinciple."Bythisismeantan u.nflinchineadherencetotheright standardofjustice.andduty.

Througheverycommunityrunsa zig-zag,butdistinctlineofcleavage between,menofprincipleandmen withoutit.Itdoesnotalwaysconnoteadeeplyreligiouscastofmind, thoughrelieionisstrongtosustain it. Whenitisthedistinguishln.gtraitofIndividualsofno.definite
