Havinggivenourbestandmost anxiousconsiderationtotheUniversitiesBillnowbeforeParliament,we ereofopinionthatinsettingupa newUniversityinBelfastandanotherinDublin,withconstituentand affiliatedColleges,ithasbeenconstructedonaplan,whichissuited totheeducationalneedsofthecountryandlikelytoleadtofinalityen theUniversitiesquestion. Withinthefundamentalconditions withinwhich,asweareinformed,the Governmenthastoact,webelieve thatagooddealmorethanisproposedinthisBillmightandought tobedonetomeetthelegitimaterequirementsoftheCatholicsofIreland,andasaconsequencetopromotetheefficiencyofthenewUniversity.Itwillreadilyoccurtomost MastersofSecondarySchoolsshould, onaccountoftheircloseconnection withUniversitywork,berepresented ontheGoverningBodyoftheProvincial.CollegesandtheUniversity, theseschoolsbeingscheduledbythe CommissionersofIntermediateEducation.
Amostimportant,andindeedvital questionisthatofthestatusand conditionoftheCollegetobeestablishedinDublin.Wehaveseenwith dismaythatitisnottoberesidential.andifthisdeterminationisperseveredin.wefeelthattheconsequencesfortheUniversityandthe Collegemaybedisastrous.Froma moralandreligious,aswellasfrom aneducationalpointofVIelv,we shouldregardisasindefensibleto throwhundredsofyoungmenonthe streetsofDublin,andsidebyside withthesplendidprovisionwhichis madeatthecostoftheTrishnation totheEpiscopalianProtestantsin TeinityCollege.itwouldreduceour studentstoapositionofintolerable inferiority.
II. Webegtostatethatwecannotundertaketosendthestudentsofthe
ArtsFacultyinMaynoothtoreside inDublin,andthatconsequentlythe resultoftheadoptionofMr.Butcher'samendmentwouldbetodeprivehundredsofstudentsresidentin thisCollegeoftheopportunities whichtheyatpresenterilloyofgainingUniversitydegrees.
