Sir,-1havereadwithagreatdealof gratificationtheletterfrom"bimpleSimon"andAix.Barrett,andMr.O'Dea, ontheabovesubject.Ourcaseissucha goodonethatwegladlywelcomediscussion,whetherfavorableorotherwise.We areconvincedthatwhoevergivesthissubjecteventhesufficieutattentionnecessary foradversecriticismwillsoonbesupportinguseitherinthestraight-outwaywe wouldlikeortheroundaboutwayofour friends,Mr.O'Deaand"SimonSimple," whichwedonotlike.

However,Iavoidedasmuchaspossible referringtoanythingthathadtranspired atourmeetings,asthematteristooimportanttobesacrificedtopersonalbickerlugs.InreplytoMr.O'Dea,Icanonly saythatourobjectfromthebeginninghas beentodivertasmallportionofthe40 or50thousandmenandgirls(whoare leavingIrelandevery.year)toWestern Australia. Wehavestatedthatagain andagainfromthebeginning.

TheJesuits,Vincentians,theChristaan arothers,theMariete,theSietensof Mercy,St.Joseph's,andvarious&ether Ordershaveallfoundedandbuiltup magnificenteducationalinstitutions,the scholarsofwhichholdtheirownbrilliantly inallwalks,oflife,anditisindeeda pleasantthingtobeabletosaythatthose uralthorityinAustraliawhoarenot Catholicvsthemselves,butProtestantsof variousdenomination's,readilyacknowledgethemagnificentworkforthenatioa donebytheCatholicChurchandCA:hulk schools,and,whiletheremaystilllinger hereandtheresomeechoofbigotryand ill-feeling,itisapleasuretoknowthat, generallyspeaking,

Ihavespokensofaroftheprogressofthe CatholicChurchinAustralia,becauseit isasourceofgreatinteresttoneinIreland.Thepriestsandthenunswhohave donethisgreatworkarealmostentiely fromIreland.Nianyofthemwillnever seeourshoresagain,andtheleastwecan doistorecognisetheirself-sacrificinglabours,andtoletthemknowthatthey areappreciatedathomehereintheold country.TheIrish,fromthepointof vieworreligionandeducationhave,it willbeseen,performedagreatworkin Australia,butinthepoliticalupbuilding ofthenationtheyhaveborneanequally gloriouspart.TheearlystatemenofAustralia,Wentworth,Duffy,andO'Shaughnassy,Burns,McCrotetan,Jennings,and Lalor--theeseacrebutafewofthemany Irishnameswhichmightbementionedof statesmenwhointhevariousAustralia StateshelpedtobuildupthatgreatCommonwealthwhichnowexists. Proceeding,Mr.Redmondpointedout thatNewSouthWaleswasthefirstseat ofgovernment,and,proceeding,tracedthe historyoftheself-governingterritories. Indeed,theproportionofIrishpopulation inAustraliaisgreatsrthanthatofthe UnitedStates,anditsisatleastsome consolationforthedeadlystreamofemigrantswhichhestakenplat.elurthelast fifteenyearstoknowthatourpeople, whohavebeendrivenbybadlawsand unfairconditionsfromIreland,havehelp- edtobuildupthenewnationsofthe world,andhaveenhancedthehonorofthe Irishnamewherevertheyhavemadetheir homes.Itisthedutyofeverymantodo hisbesttokeepourpeopleathomeonthe sacredsoilofIreland.Butifourrace mustgo.weshallbegladtoknowthat itistobuildupnewnationsbeyondthe seas,andthathighoverthemisplanted byIrishhandsthatbannerofIrishnaticamlityandIrishfaithwhichinthe darkestdaysofpersecutionwasnever fruled,andwhichnevrwillbefurledby Irishmenaslongasstarsshine.andthe riversruntheircoursestothesea.
