CertainpartsofFatherHopsomer's missionareterrorisedbybandsofwellarmedtheivea,whocannotbeovercome bythemandarinwithhisfewcowardly soldiers,oftenconnivingattheserobberies.Evenasthieves,theseroughs aremindfulofChristianetiquette.A bandwillsurroundaconveyance,and themostrespectablelookingrascalwill saytotheownerordriver,"Elderbrother,Ibegyoutogetoutandtoallow nietotidyupyourcart."Whenthe thieveshavehelpedthemselestoallthey mayfancyofitscontents,theymake profoundbows,andwishtheirvictima pleasantjourney.Indeed,thevieti!it mayconsiderhimselfluckyifthepolite gentryhavelefthimhisanimalsandgar_ ments.Occasionallytherobbersresort toratheramusingtrickery.Onedaytwo peasantsweregoinghomewiththesavingsofseveralyears'hardwork.Feeling tired,theysatunderatree,andhere theywereapproachedbyamanwho salutedthem,whereuponthepeasants rosetoreturnthe"kotow."Theythen begantotalk,andthemanaskedifthe twocomradeswerenotafraidoftherobbers,andrelatedhowhehadrecently seenathiefdespoilingtwotravellersin themostskilfulway.Whenthepeasants inquiredhowonemancouldgetthebetteroftwomen,thestrangerrepliedthat iftheywouldgivethemtheirstaffshe wouldsoonshowthemhowitwasdone.
