ThepaltryandinsultingIrish CouncilBill,bywhichtheLiberal Partysoughttoredeemtheirpledge(manysaythereneverwassuch apledge)togiveIrishmenthepower tomanageIrishaffairs"accordingto Irishideas,"hasbroughtabouta strongreactioninIrelandagainst theweakandspinelesspolicypursuedbytheIrishParliamentaryPartyoflateyears,andhasbrought theSinnFeinidealsintostrongpublicprominence.TheactionofMessrs O'Mara,Dolan,O'Donnell,and,especiallySirT.GrattanEsmonde,NationalistM's.P.,whoseemedtofavour theSinnFeinpolicy,hasmadeIrish sympathisersinAustraliaanxiousto. knowwhatexactlytheShinFeinobjectiveis. Tosatisfythosewho havehithertobeenunabletogetan authoritativeaccountofSinnFein, wegivethegirtofanarticleon thisnewpartylatelywritteninthe"Independent"bya"SinnFeiner."
Perhaps,thefirstmisconceptionof SinnFein,saysthewriter,isthatit isapolicyofPhysicalForce.Now, PhysicalForceis,initself,neither goodnorbailitisveryoftengood andveryoftennecessary.Itisobvioustoeveryonethat,evenifweso. desired,Irelandoanatthemoment carryonnocampaignofactiveor armedresistanceagainstEngland. Wehaveneithertrainedmen,nor guns,norships.Whatarewetodo?
TheSinnFeinpolicypointstheway: Sincewecannotresistbyforceof arms,wewillresistunarmed.Sine* wecannotresistactively,wewillresistpassively.Butresistwewill andmust,iftheIrishNationisto beSinnpreserved. Feinisnotopposedtoanypoliticalparty,Parliamentarianor otherwise,onpartygrounds.

ENerythingweareproudofnow weowetheChurch'smagnificentwork inthosesubsequentcenturies.What shedidnotactuallyaccomplish,she laidthefoundationof,awluponthat foundationislaidthesolidsuperstructureofourpresentdayscientific achievements.The"Reformation" wasnotsocompleteandradicalan annihilationofChristiancivilisanan astheadvanceofthefierceandsavagehordesfromNorthernEuropehad beentotheoldRomancivilisation. butitcasttheprogressoftheworld backatleastthreehundredyears. Thisisanaspectofthe"Rebirmation"whichislittleconsideredbut itsdestructiveeffectwaswell-nighin. calculable.ThelosstoArtandLiteraturewhichthe"Reformation"entailedcanneverherepaired. In thosemadtimesthe"Reformers' destroyedthemostpricelessworks ofhumangenius.Thefirstrnelieh NationalArtGallery,forinstance. wasdestrnyed,andbooks,whichnow wouldheofincalculablevalue,were burnedincartloadsawldestroyedin shiploads. Theperiodofexplorationtreatedof intheUniversityExtensionLectures thisyearisoneinwhichtheChurch andherchildrenwereaccomplishing theirmagnificentworkunhempere.d byanyforcesofretrogressionand destruction.Thelecturesgivean idea,averyfaintone,ofthealmost unconquerabledifficultiesofthe Church'staskandoftheinvincible courageandperseverancebywhichshe overcamethesedifficulties.Thelecturesdonot,andindeedarenotexpectedto,bringintoprominencethe partenactedbytheChurchinthis, asinallotherenterprisesofthe Renaissanceperiod.Butthestrongestandmostimpellingmotivesto theseundertakingscamefromher. Whoevermaybetheprominentfigure intheforeground,theChurchwas alwaysthemightyandstimulating powerbehind.Columbus,ofwhom thelectureonlastThursdayweek treatedwillshortly,mostprobably, hecanonisedaSaintbytheChurch andtheothergreatmenoftheperiod,iftheywerenotreligious andpriests,wereboundtothe Churchbyclosesttiesoffiliallove, andwereencouraged,stimulated,and rewardedbyherinalltheirachievemeatsinthecauseofscience,learningandhumanprogress.TheLectureshaveaneducationalvalue.,but forCatholicsabovealltheypossess elementsspeciallyattractive,asshowingwhattheirpredecessorsinthe faithhavedone,andasprovingthat theprogress,theglory,andthetriumphoftheworldaretheChurch's, andtheproudestachievementsofthe humanmindarehersorduetoher.
