Theoccasionwasthedistributionof prizestothePresbyterianKing's scholarsattendingtheTrainingCollegewithaviewtobecomingnational teachers.Thereport,whichwaspresentedbytheRev..1.D.Osborne. statedthatgreatrefaamswereurgentlyneededinIrisheducation,bait secularisedwouldneverIleacceptedby theIrishpeople:hetrustednoattemptwouldeverhemadetointpaaseitcanthem.TheMaeleratorof theGeneralAssemlalywhopresided, saidthataspecifiedpartofthe schoolhoursshouldhesetasidefor religiousinstruction,andifthatwere done'difficultieswouldvanishandthe ereatquestinnwouldbesolved.

RightRev.Mgr.Hallinan,NewcastleWest,readthe'evil-WillIt:paperIL' fo.retheMaynoothUnion.Heably urgedthenecessityforaCatholicDefenceSociety.Themajorityofthe people,hepointedout,weredebarred fromemploymenttowhichtheywere justlyentitledbyanintolerantminority.Injusticewasneverdestined toheeternalanditwastheirduty asprieststotaketheirpartsideby sidewiththepeople. 'The-BillintroducedlayMr.Birrell toprovidefortherestorationofthe evictedtenantsis,sofarascanhe gatheredfrontthespeechoftheChief Secretary,aNMIandhonesteffortto grapplewith,andsettle,aburning question. Foroversixteenyears Parliamenthasbeenholdingout hopestotheevictedtenantsofrestorationtotheirholdings. Attheentranceto Straidetherewasascrollstretched acrosstheroadbearingDavitt'sname, indicatingthatherewas'theplace wherehewasborn. Alargeportraitofthedeadpatriotwasfastenedhighonatree.Therethemeetingwassubsequentlyheld,butprevioustothisthecrowdsassembledin Straide,andnearlyeveryonevisited thegraveofDevitt.Thevillage,the humblechurch,theruinedDominican Abbey,withtheancienttombof CountManusO'Donnell,areallin onelittlegroupinahollow.The churchliedinfrontalargescrollwith thewords,"PrayforthesoulofMi-

MichaelDavittwasamartyr.He spentsevenlongyearsandseven monthsintheprisoncellsofEngland,subjectedtoeveryhumiliation andindignity.Thatlocality,which cradledDavitt,wasonceapopulous district,butnowtherewasnothing heardbutthelowingofthecattle andthewhirrofthewildbirds(applause).MichaelDevittwasapatriotwhoscornedself-aggrandisement, whoworkedonlytosavethedowntroddenpeople(applause).Hewasa hero.Hedreadednofoe.Hetook thesideoftheoppressedinmany lands. Hewasfearedbytheoppressor,thelandlord,theevictor,the bailiff,thegrabber,thegrazier(applause).Theyweretheretoproclaimintheirownname.'andinthe nameoftheIrishrace,thathewould neverheforgotten.Heestablisheda greatorganisationatWestport28 yearsago,anditbecamesostrong thattheGovernmenthadtolegislate inaccordancewithitswishes.Heput intoforcethelessonslearnedinthat localitywherehewasevicted. He labored,hehungeredandthirstedfor justicesake,andtowinthelandfor thepeople;andthough"hardtoget" theywould"haveityet"(lour]applause.).Thechairmanthencalled nponMr.JosephDevlin,M.P.,todelivertheaddressoftheclay. The'Modernised"Catholicsays thattruthisunattainable.That thereisnosuchthingasabsolute truth. This"attitudetowards Christianity."asoneofthenewherelicssays,"isthatofPilatebefore Jesus."Theirattitudeisoneofuniversalscepticism.Likeallsceptics, theirdoctrineisajumbleofcontradiction.

Asthe"CiviltaCatholica"saysof them:-"inonebreath theytellus thatthetruthisintheInnermost conscienceofeveryindividualand mayheevenfoundinmanysouls thatdoubt.andmaybediscovered evenincertainformsofnegation inthenextbreath,theyontheother handassureusthatinthesearchaftertruthwecanneverarriveata definitegoalandthateachstageof advanceisonlyapointforanew departure.Theyalsoinformusthat 'whoeverentersuponthispathknows atstartingoutthathewillnot reachtheexactplacewherehe thoughthewouldforthereasonthat truthishisinvisibleguide.'Afew linesfurtheronwereadthathe thirstsafterthetruthhedoesnot possess.' Weseewithwhateasy composuretheycanaffirmanddeny atoneandthesametimewithout stickingtoeitheraffirmationordenial.Theyassigntousasourguide thatwhichwearesearchingafter; theytellusthatwedonotpossess thatwhichtheyaffirmisourInnermostconscience;theydenytheexistence,nayeventhepossibility,ofa finalgoal,whilstatthesametime claimingthatthesearcheraftertruth willnotarriveattheexactplace wherehebelievedhewould.These paradoxesareunworthyofmenof

tobeplacedoutsidetheChurch,but stillwithoutsubmittingsothatthey maynotbedisloyaltotheirown convictions:finallyinregardtofallinginwiththetimesinallthings, inthemannerofspeaking,writing andpreachingaboutcharitydivorced fromfaith-acharitywhichisvery considerateofunbelievers,butwhich openstoall,thewaytoeternalruin.

Thegreatest'dangeraboutthis plorableconductwasthattheleadersofthemovement'wishedtoremainintheChurchatallcost.We havelatelygivenalengthyreview ofoneofthenovels,"11Santo," writtentopropagatethis"modernised"Protestantism. Thoseofour readerswhohaveperusedthereview ofthisbookwillhaveobtainedsome ideaofthesubtilityandcunning withwhichtheevilworkissought tohedone."IlSanto"wascondemnedandplacedontheIndee.M. Fogazzaro,theauthor,submittedto thecondemnationandwithdrewhis hookfrompublication.Buthissubmissionwasmerelyarusehedidnot abateonetittleofhispropaganda. Hisprofessionofobediencetothe Romanauthoritieswasmademerely thathemightbelistenedtobyCatholicswithlesssuspicion The "modernisedCatholic"crouphaveendeavouredtoavoidanopenbreak withtheChurch.Theyknewthat oncetheirerrorswereexposedand authoritativelyrepudiatedandcensuredtheirinfluencewasforever shattered.Thatblowhasfallen. Likesomanyotherexcrescences,the Churchhascastthemoff.Likeso manyotherrottenlimbs,theyhad toheseparatedfronttheparent stem.Themagnitudeofthemiswrought "modernism" berealisedfromthewordsof X.attheAprilConsistory.On occasionhesaidthatthesenew rorshadcausedhimmoreanguish thepersecutionsorthelosses feredbytheChurchinFrance allovertheworld.Itserrors dePius that erthan sufor have obtainedafootingchieflyInFrance andItaly,andmoreconspicuously amongtheyoungergeneration.The leadersaretheAbbeRomoloMuni, nowsuspended,SenatorFogazzaro, theauthorofthreepowerfulnovels, andRev.GeorgeTyrrell,anEnglishex-Jesuit,andaconvert.They havemanyfollowersoflesserstanding,bothinFranceandItaly.All refusedtoleavetheChurchandinaugurateanopenrevoltagainstthe ChurchlikeLuther.Underthemask ofCatholicitytheysought.tospread themostvirulentformofProtestantism.

"Yousee,VenerableBrothers,whetherwewhosedutyitistodefend withallourstrengththedepositconfidedtoushavenotgoodreasonto beanxiousbeforethisassaultwhich doesnotconstituteaheresy,but theEPITOME,THEVENOMOUS ESSENCE,ofallheresies-anassault whichwouldunderminethefundamentalsofthefaithandannihilate Christianity.
