Withoutknowingit,theyareunder theinfluenceofthosevestigesofCatholictruthandpracticeswhicharestill retainedintheChurchoftheReformationwhereverfound.Theyaccept them,andevenargueandreasonfrom them,buttheydothisjustasstudentsinanyparticularsciencereason anddrawconclusionsfromtheprinciples,data,andexperienceswhich theyreceivefromtheprofessorsof thatscience.Consequently,thereligiousconvictionswhichcomeasthe resultoftheirreasonings,mayallhe accountedforwithoutanysuppositionofasupernaturalfaithwithin threepersonsandnodoubt,inmany cases,ifnotinmostcaseswherewe meetwithsettledreligiousconvictionssoarrivedat,theyaresotobe accountedfor.Thisviewforcesitselfuponusparticularlyinthecase ofpersonswhodonotseemtohave quitemadeuptheirmindastowhat theyreallydobelieve;andinthe caseofotherswho,astheysay,have anopenmind,whosaythattheyare preparedtodiscusswithoutprejudice thesubjectofreligion.Theexceptionwouldhewhenthesereligious convictionsresultfromthatgift'of supernaturalfaithwhichwasimparted inaBaptismvalidlyadministered fromwhichfaiththerehasnotbeen anywilfuldepartureortheymay resultfromsomeexceptionalgrace.I donotpretendtoformanyideaof thenuntherofcasestowhichtheseexceptionswouldapply.Theymayhe veryninny,theymaybefew.I.etus hopethattheyaremany.Leavingout ofourcalculationstheseexceptional cases,weseefromwhathasbeensaid that,underthecircumstance'sweare nowdealingwith,religiousconvictionsmayarise,notfromsupernaturalfaith,butfromreasonwhichhas hadathandsomanyspecialhelps toenableittoarriveatthem.There are,besidesthesepersonswhoadhere tosomeformofbelief,manyothers who,confusedandbewilderedby.so manyopinionsandbe,somuchdivergenceofteaching,havebecomeindifferenttoallbelief.

Inowaskyoutoconsidertwotests ofreligiousconvictionsofthekindwe aredealingwith.Thesetestsarenot newtheyhavebeensuggestedbefore. ImaintainIhattheywilllend supporttothetheorythattheseconvictionsarenottheresultofsupernaturalfaith.Iask.first.thatthese convictions,iftheyproceedfromthe oneDivineAuthor,shallbeuniform. thatis,thattheyshallbethesame inall.FaithisagiftofGod.who isTruthitself,andinwhomthereis nocontradictionorshadowofchange. MembersoftheReformedReligionwish tomaintainthattheirsisthetrue Church.Theywillnotheableto convinceusthatthisisso,untilthey showusthattheyhavethetrueand unchangingfaith.Butwhatdowe find? Attheveryoutsetofourinquiryintothisall-importantmatter. ourreligiouseusceptibilitlesareshockedwhenwediscoverthattherearo withinthisRefereedChurchseveral separateparties,distituruisheelbydiversityofdoctrinesanderactIces.We learnthatthisdiversityofbelief

turnsuponthemostvitaldoctrines, namely,thenumberofSacraments, thepowersofthepriesthood,armthe RealPresenceintheEucharist.Anothershockissustainedwhenwesee thatthefollowersoftheReformed System'ofto-daywishtodiscard,or tomodifyveryconsiderably,thosearticlesofreligionandthosecreeds which,threehundredandfiftyyears ago,wereconsideredfundamental;so thattheReformedChurchofto-day isnotquitetheReformedChurchof thesixteenthcentury.Butourinquiryisnotyetcomplete.Wemust questionindividuals,bothamongthe clergyandthelaity. Herewereceivetherudestshockofall.Among everyclass,andevenamongthetea- chersthemselves,wemeetwithevery possibledivergenceofreligiousviews innowayrepresentedbythevarious main'divisionsoftheChurch:andin verymanycaseswediscover,even amongchurch-goers,greatdoctrinal ignorance,manifestingunconcern aboutsovitalamatterasfaith. Marethanthis,welearnfrommany personsthattheyhaverecently,orlongago,changedtheirviews,that theyarenotclearuponmany points,andthatdoubtsareconstantlysuggestingthemselvesaboutthe wholesystem.Whatthen?Arewe tobelievethatthesemenofdivergent,uncertain,andever-changing viewsareallinstructedbyoneand thesameDivineSpiritofTruth'?that theirconvictionsaretheresultof supernaturalfaith? Dearbrethren, youandTseethatthiscannotbeso. WecannotbelievethatGodisthe Authorofcontradictoryconviction, Notheconvictionsofthesepersonsaresimplyopinionsorviewswhich they.havereasonedoutforthemselves,orwhichtheyhavelearnedfrom others.Andjustasthreepersons changetheirviewsaboutpoliticsor science,somaytheychange-their viewsaboutreligion;theyhavenot supernataralfaith. ItiswrittenintheProphets"They shallallbetaughtofGod,"andour LordHimselfquotedthistext.Now Godteachesoneunchangingfaithand Hespeakswithoneunchangingvoice. Turn andfromtheseconflictingideas, examinethecaseoftheCatholic' Church.Timedoesnotallowmeto domorethantosumuphercase. ConsultCatholicsofeverycountry, ofeverycentury,ofeveryconditionof talentorsocialstanding:readthe writingsofCatholicsofthepresent antiofallpasttimesyouWillfind them,oneandall,ofthesameunchangingfaith. Howshallweaccountforthismagnificentunite-?It isnotahumanwork-no,.itisdivine.Thisisthetrueandonlyexplanationofthatmarvellousspecta- cle. Supernaturalfaith,andnot mereopinion,isintheCatholic Churchherchildrenholditandpro- fessit,OurLordhasonlyonefold: anditisHe,theGoodShepherd,who keepsHisfollowerstogether.They followHim,andtheyhearHisvoice: theyaredociletoHisChurch,which speakstotheminHisname. Thereisasecondtest.Itisthis: WillthemembersoftheReformed Church,asabody,answerfortheir religiousconvictionswiththeirlives? Letthemaskthemselves,letthem askoneanotheriftheyholdtheirreligiousconvictionsdearerthantheir propertylandtheirlives.Willthey not,forthemost.part,ratherchange theseviewsthansufferthelossof theirproperty,orlaydowntheirlives? LecturesOnFehruary12th,Mr.J. H.Wilburdeliveredalectureentitled "AmericanReminiscences."OnMay 1-ith.MaiC.Bettyelecturedon"Shakespeare,HisLifeandPlays."He wasassistedbytheMissesS.andM. Harris.MissConigrave.andMessrs. c.P.ConigraveandW.R.Orr. A veryinterestinglecturewasdelivered bytheRev.FatherWheeler,O.M.T., onCeylon,onJune18th.Father WheelerhasbeenaresidentofCeylon formanyyears,andhispersonalexperiencesandimpressionswerevery interesting. Forallthelecturescordialinvitationswereextendedtotheparishioners,andwearepleasedtoreportthat agoodnumberavailedthemselvesof theopportunitiesoffered.

Perhapsthemostsuccessfulitemof thetermwasthe"mock'banquet," whichwasheldinconjunctionwith theLadies'Society.Ourspiritual director,Rev.FatherCrowley.and about30membersofeachSociety werepresent.Thespeechesonthe occasionweredecidedlygood.andthe noveltyofladyspeakerswasmuch appreciated.SocialDuringthetermtheSocietyhelda"SocialF.vening,"anda danceinaidofthefundsbothwere. decidedsocialsuccesses,hutdidnot benefitthefinancesoftheSocietyto envereatextent.Theboxingclass, tinderthesupervisionofMr.Cooper.

ThebazaarinaidofSt.Anthony's ConventofMercy,Coolgardic,was broughttoasuccessfulcloseonlast SaturdaynightattheTivoliTheatre, andthepromotershaveeveryreason tobesatisfiedwiththefinancialresultswhichgofartoprovethatthe "OldCamp"isnotdeadyet.Inour lastissuewegaveanaccountofthe openingceremonywhichwasperformedbyMr.Fiddy,M.L.A.,assistedby Mr.Glowers-,M.L.C.;alsoadescriptionofthevariousstallsandtheir contents,aswellasthenamesofthe ladystall-holders,andsomeoftheir principalassistants. Fineweather prevailedthroughouttheweekexcept onThursdaynight,whentheattendancewasverymeagre.Excellent programmesofsong,dance,andrecitation,drill,clubswinging,etc.were renderedwhilethefetelasted.The theatrewaskindlylentbyMr.C.
