PROTESTANTSANDTHEGAELIC LEAGUE.

InopeningaFeisatMidletonon Sunday,May26,VeryRev.Archdeac,onHutch,P.P.,referredtotheformationofabranchoftheGaelic LeagueforProtestantsinDublin,and alsototheestablishmentofaGaelic SocietyinTrinityCollege.AsaCatholicpriesthewelcomedrightheartilytheProtestantsofIrelandupon theplatformoftheGaelicLeague, buttheyshouldnotmakearing aroundthemselvesandbeisolated fromthemajorityofthepeople.Let themfollowthenobleexampleofEtptainDonelan,M.P.,andDr.Douglas Hydebyjoiningtheranksofthe GaelicLeague,andunitedlypartici' pateintheIrishlanguagedemonstrationinDublin.

ATROCIOUSINTOLERANCEIN BELFAST.

CountyInspectorFaussett,in chargeof200police,escortedSubSheriffGaleand14bailiffsonMay 27,toKilmacowenandGoulaneto executeevictiondecreesagainstten tenantsoftheLeahyEstate.The tenantswereapparentlydisorganised, and,althoughacrowdofsevenor eighthundredsympathisersassembled offeredbutfeebleresistance,the mainfightingbeingeffectedbyafew girls,whokeptupafusiladeofmissilesthroughouttheday,chieflydirectedagainstthebailiffs.Oftheten tenantstobeevicted,sixsettled.The evictionsintwocaseswereabandonedowingtoillnessinthefamilies. Onetenantwasillegallyserved,and theremainingtenant,JeremiahMurphy,Goulane,wasevicted,butwas allowedoneroomofthehousefor himselfandfamily.

DUBLIN.-OnMay26hisGracethe ArchbishopofDublinpresidedata meetingheldinSt.Kevin'sChurch, Harrington-street,forthepurposeof providingfundstoerectamemorial tothelateCanonConolly,P.P.,in theformofthecompletionofthe Grantham-streetandClanbrassil-street schools,andthepaintinganddecorationofthechurch.TheRightRev. LIMERICK.-ALimerickdespatch onTuesday,May21,says:-His Honor,JudgeAdams,attheopening oftheQuarterSessionsforCounty Limerickto-day,congratulatedthe GrandJuryontheperfectpeace, tranquility,andorderthatprevailed throughoutthatgreatcountry,east andwest.Therewasnocrime,there wasnodisturbance,therewaseven nounrest-hemeantunrestoutside thelawwithinthecounty.Hewas surethatallgoodmen,whatever theirpoliticalopinionsmaybe,must rejoiceinthatstateofthings,and mustwishthatLimerickwouldfor everremaininthatcondition.He regrettedtosaythattheyhad beenbroughtinfromthecountry tohearatrivialcase,whichina differentstateoflawmightbedisposedofbythemagistrates.

TheSistersofCharityofSt.Paul, whoseheadHouseisatSelby,Park, nearBirmingham,andwhohavenumerousconventsinEnglandandWales, openedinOctober,1908,theirfirst conventinIreland,theplace@elected beingKilfinane,intheCountyLimerick,thenearestrailwaystationbeingKilmallock,aboutsixmilesdistant.Underthepatronageofthe goodBishopofthediocese,theMost Rev.Dr.O'Dwyer,theSisterswere notlongbeforetheystarteda school,andthepupilshaveincreased fromfortytoclose-uponfourhundred,theInspectorsreportingmost excellentresults.Thereisnodoubt thegrandworkdonebythisCommunityinasmallcountryalacelike Kilfinanewillbearabundantfruitin time.TheprudentandzealousRev MotherIgantiushasnowstarteda schoolforlace,oneofthegreatest blessingsinaplacewherethereare somanygrown-upgirlswithnooccupation.

SaystheLiverpool"Catholic Times"-AsacontrasttoMr.Harris'stestimonywithregardtotheconductoftheCatholicmajorityinthe SouthofIrelandtowardstheProtestantminorityandastrikingcommentonthepolicypursuedbyProtestantsinBelfastwhommenofkindredsentiment.inLiverpoolwould holduptousasmodels,wecall attentiontotheunimpeachableevidence,whichwereproducethisweek fromthe"UlsterGuardian,"theorganoftheIndependentOrangeOrder, oftheboycottingofaCatholicemployebytheNVorksCommitteeofthe BelfastCorporation. Wechallenge theLiverpoolpoliticianswhohave beenbringingcontemptupontheir creedbyassociatingitwiththeirvile calumniesontheCatholicpopulation ofIrelandtodenythatitisarecordofshame.TheSuperintendent ofWorkswasdirectedtomakean appointmenttoavacantclerkship. Mr.PatrickMcArdle,agentleman mostcompetenttofillthepostand ofexcellentcharacterwaschosenby thesuperintendent-himselfaPresbyterian-becausehebelievedhewas thebestfittedmemberofhisstaff fortheposition.Mr.McArdlewas appointedforafortnightontrial, butbeforethatperiodhadelapsedthe WorksCommitteediscoveredthathe wasaCatholic,tookthematterout ofthehandsofthesuperintendent, anddecidedthatMr.McArdleshould bedismissedfromthepositionand andthatagentlemennamedJohnstonshouldbeappointedinhisplace. Thisactionwastaken,asadissentientProtestantmemberdeclared,in orderthat"no-Papistshould getthejob."TheCommitteehas beenguiltynotmerelyofboycotting butofdishonesty,foritisunquestionablydishonesttopreventortry topreventCatholicsfromderivingthe sameadvantagesasProtestantsfrom theratestowhichtheycontribute.

Mr.StephenGwynnexplainstothe Liberals,throughthecolumnsof"The DailyChronicle,"whytheIrishCouncilBillwasrejected.Theexplanation,iftakentoheart,willdothe Liberalsgood.TheGovernmentproposalswererejected"becausefrom firsttolastthoseproposalsbreathed thespiritofmistrustoftheIrish people."Andheboldlytracesthis mistrusttoitssource."Englandis alwaysreadytocreditevilofIreland, partlybecausethelongracialstrife,in whichEnglandwrongedanddistrustedIrelandbecauseofdislike,for.as thewiseRomansaid,itisatrait ofhumannaturetohatethosewhom youhaveinjured;andpartlybecause ithasbeencomfortabletosaddleallthemiseryondefects ofcharacter. But,aboveand beforeall,Englandhasalways readilybelievedtheworstofIreland uponimputeddefectsintheIrishcharacter.Thatistheresultofan ingrainedandinbreddetestationof RomanCatholicismwhichisto.he foundinalmosteveryEnglishman. ThereisthetruerootoftheIrish difficulty.Theascendancypartyin Irelandhavealwaysbeenabletoappealtothisprejudice,andhavenever appealedinvain.Theresulthas beentobreedinProtestantIreland afeelingtowardsCatholicslikethat oftheruling-raceincountrieswhere thereisacolorbar."Mr.Gwynn writesasaProtestant"absolutely remoteinopinionfromtheCatholic creed."Buthisownexperiencehas taughthimhowslowlyprejudiceyields tofacts.

TheGrandTemperanceFetewas openedonMondayafternoon.May 27,intheFatherMathewHallby theCountessofFineall.Therewas alargeattendanceduringtheevening,andthevisitorsenjoyedthe manyattractionsofthefete.

DERRY.-InBallyronan,about fourmilesfromMagherafelt,onSaturday,May25,theHibernianswere attackedbyamobofOrangemenwith bottles,etc.TheOrangemensmashedthewindowsofapublichouse anddidother'damage.TheHiberniansretailiatedastherewereno policetoprotectthemandroutedthe attackers.

The_vigorousandprolongedagitationcarriedonbytheGaelicLeague fortherestorationoftheIrishfees hasbeensuccessful.Thedecisionof theGovernmentwithregardtothe rateofpaymentforteachingIrishin nationalschoolswasannouncedbyMr CherryintheHouseofCommonson Thursday,16thMay.Thegrantper pupiltobegiveninschoolsinwhich IrishistaughtasanordinarysubjectisSs6d,4s,and12srespectivelyforsuccessivecourses,beginningin thethirdstandard,andinthecase ofschoolswhichadoptthebilingual pragramme4s6,or8sperpupil, accordingtothemeritshownbythe schoolasawhole.Thisscaleoffees whilstnotexactlyonthelinesdemandedbytheGaelicLeague.which providedforpaymentinallstandards,isstillregardedasfairlysatisfactory.Thepaymentofferedinthe upperstandardsisconsideredsufliliberaltoinduceteachersto

ThelimitationsoftheBillwould simplyprovoketheevilthattheywere meanttoprevent."Everyonewho knowsIrelandknowsthatreligious bigotry,whereitexistsatall,exists preciselyunderthoseconditionswhich thisBillaimsatproducing." Mr. Gwynnisabsolutelyright."Ina Councilwherethemajorityfound theirnaturalpreponderancecurtailed andthreatenedbytheintrusionofa nominatedelement,isitnoteasilyto beforeseenthateverydecisionofthe bodywouldbeatrialofstrength? Theminoritywouldlosetheirnatural claimonthegenerosityandjusticeof themajority,andasaProtestantI believetheseprovisionswouldendangertheProtestantinterestby makingitacutelyunpopularassuch. Thepolicyoftrustinthis,asinevery othermatter,wouldbethewiserand morestatesmanlike.Asitis,theBill whichIrelandhas,afterfairandclose consideration,rejectedissimplya monumentofdistrust-andofadistrustwhichEnglishmen,examining theirownconvictions,willfindarisingfromnoothercausethanthat racialprejudiceagainstaparticular religiontowhichIhavetriedto directtheirattention."Thisis plaintalkandastrueasitisplain.

Itispleasantinthesedaysoframpantacademicatheism,tofallinwith ascholarsoaccomplishedasDoctor EmilReichwhogrudgesnothistri. butetotheexcellenceofeducation andtraininginCatholiccollegesend Seminaries.ThelearnedHungarian hasjustpublishedaworkdealing withtheall-absorbingthemeofsuccessinlife,whichembodiesseveral chapterswhicharenotlessremarkablefortheshrewdnessoftheir generalpurviewthantheyare foracertainaudacityofimaginationandoutlook, accentuatedoverandoveragainbya styleofEnglishwhichisasnovelinexpressionasitiscareless oftheacceptedcanonsofthelanguage.However,sinceDoctorReich isanadvocateofunusualmethods assuremeansofattainingameasure ofsuccessinlife,itishardlyfair toquarrelwiththequalityofhis prose,whichis,moreover,beyond thescopeofourreview,theobject whereofistoshowwhatamodern philosopher,whofollowsnoaccepted isbroad-mindedenoughto sayofasystemofeducationwhich ismoreoftencondemnedthanpraised bynon-Catholics.Itissatisfactory tohearfroinhimthatsuccessinlife israrely,ifeveritcanheshownto havebeen,dependentonwhatis termedluck.Onthecontrary,we aretold,everythingissowell-balancedinourworldthatprovidedaman havetheenergy,hewillhecertainto findhisrewardatsometimeorother inhislife.

Suchanunprecedentedsuccessmust necessarilyimplysomefruitfullessonsforindividualcandidatesforsuccess,too.

todevelopineach'disciplethetwo strongestenginesofsuccess,namely, intellectandwill-power.Heavoided fallingintothefatalmistakeofsome teachersandofanumberofnations, whostrengthenthewill-powerand characterofthepupilattheexpense ofalltheotherfacultiesofthemind andheart-asistheBritishmethod. TheJesuitnovicegoesthrougha coursewhichwhencompletedleaves himwithatenaciouswillandanintellectsubtleenoughtocopewith everymoveofattackordefence.This combinationinmenoftheworldis muchmorefrequentlymetwithin AmericathaninEngland. Above all,DoctorReichinsists'thatreligionisanabsoluteessentialoflastingsuccess.Religionteachesman thategotismisnotonlynotright, butthatitisofnouseintheend. Itteachesusthathumilityhelpsus morethananythingelse.Respectfor others,husbandsforwives,children forparents,employersforemployees, andviceversa,thiscanonlycome fromreligion.

AsMr.Gladstoneusedtosay,he hadneverseenamanengagedinactivepoliticswhowasnotinclinedat leasttocreditreligionwithagreat dealoftruth.

TheFrenchdisastersof1870and 1871aretobeputdowntothefact thattheirreligionhadbeenforsaken bythepeople,saystheDoctor."They havenotbeenabletomustercouragetorepairthedeepinjurythen inflictedontheirnationalhonorand inthatmiserablestateofirresolutenessandshamearisingfromtheir culpablelackofnationalcouragethey againthrowbeliefandreligionoverboard."

TheBibleDoctorReichdiscusses withhisusualeffectiveness.Inhis opinionalltheattacksmadeuponit bythe"highercritics"inrecentyears, haveonlyhadtheeffectofstultifying themselvesandtheir-originators. Someofthepassagesinwhichhe dealswiththissubjectdeserveto .hequoted.

thefeelingsandthefullerreligious knowledgeofhisCatholicreaders nevertheless,hediscernsnomovementsofmodernprogressinSpain whicharenecessarilyhostiletothe Church,andherecognisesinthe Churchtheconservatorofthatdistinctivespiritwhichmakesthecharm andthestrengthofSpain.

WhenMr.ElliscallsthatSpirit "theromantic,"hedoesnotusethe termas"theexpressionofasuperficialsentimentality,"butratherofa chivalry"sterninitsidealsandvery practicalinitsachievements."At baseofitistheSpanishotherworldliness,orasMn,Ellisputsit,the perpetualinsistenceonBufferingand death.Wecannotdissociateeither patriotismorreligion,eveninits materialisticage,fromtestimonyuntobloodandfidelityuntodeath.The Spaniardhasnevertriedtodissociate them.Hisproofofloveishardship manfullyborne;buthisexpectation ofParadisehasnothinderedhimfrom makingpleasantplacesontheway thitherthatbefittinglyheraldthat gloriousAbidingCity.

Spainisamonarchy,asweknow, butitisalso,asMr.Havelockdelightstoremindus,themostdemocraticofcountries.

Thefamiliarandintimaterelationshipwhichweknowintheold comediesofEuropeandothersources,assubsistingbetweenmasterand servant,betweengentlemanandpeasant,isstilluniversal.TheWaiter, eveninyourmodernhotel,afew pacesframthePuertadelSol,pats youonthebackwithfriendlyintimacyasyoustepoutofthelifton thedayafteryourarrival;andevery low-classSpaniardexpects,as'a'letterofcourse,tobetreatedasan equal.Wearenotunfamiliarwith thatattitudein,moreprogressive countriesbuttheSpaniardshows thatheisentitledtosuchcourtesy byknowinghowtoreturnit."

TheCatholicfaithofSpainisthe sourceofherdemocraticaswellas of_herchivalric'spirit,evenifthe Spaniardsarenotasfluentabout "theFatherhoodofGodandthebrotherhoodofman,"asaresomeother peopleswhohavenotnearlyso strongfaithinboth.Mr.Ellisisso thoroughlyinlovewithSpainthat hehaslost-allthe"Ang,lo-Salon" capacityfortakingscandalntthe fashioninwhichtheSpaniardsniake themselvesathomeintheHouseof God. sitwouldheaseriousmistaketo seehereanyindifferencetoreligion onthecontrary.theeasyfamiliarity withsacredthingsissimplythenttitudeofthosewhoinWordsworth's phrase,lieinAbraham'sbosomall

splendidtypeofwomanhooddevelopedinSpain;althoughhedeprecates limitededucationalfacilitiesandthe habitofOrientalseclusion "Spanishwomenhavealwayspos- sessedasingularnativevigorandfibre.Itisnotalonetheirbeautyandcharmwhichdistinguishesthem, butintelligenceandcharacter.As queensandheroinesandassaints,in literatureandinphilanthropy,Span- ishwomenhaveinallagesaisertid themselves."Afterall,theiroppor- tunitiesmusthewiderthantheyseem toaccountforsuchresultsasare setforthbythenon-Catholicwriter ofthisarticle.

Thisisperhapsthemostregrettable featureofourlawcourts.Theside that"doesthehardestswearing"inevitablywins.Thatjusticeunalloyed-even"legal"justice-ismetedout inourcourtsthereisnoonesounsophisticatedastobelieve.Notthat ourmagistratesarevenalandcorrupt,butbecausetheydecide"accordingtoevidence"dethepreponderance of"evidence.".Whenthe"evidence" onbothsidesisspuriousitismerely byaccidentthatthescalesofjusticecaninclinetowardstruth.Justiceisalwaysrepresentedwithcoveredeyes.Buthowjusticeinour courtscanbesoblindtothecounterfeitsoftruthwhichareproffered withscarcelyanypretenceatdisguiseisincomprehensible.Yetitis thiscounterfeitpresentmentoftruth thatformsthestapleofcourtevidenceandthebasisofjudicialdecisions. Naturallyourmagistratescannotalwayspretendblindness,andtheir commentsontheprevalenceofperjuryarebecomingmorefrequent,but thecrimeisnottreatedwithanythingliketheseverityitcallsfor, orexposedandpunishedasfrequently asitcouldbe.

Thattheabovestatementsrespectingthefrequencywithwhichperjury iscommittedarenotexaggerated,we givethefollowingextractsfromthe summingupofoneofourSupreme Courtjudges.Theyarewordsusedata trialforperjurywhichtookplacelast weekonthegoldfields.HisHonor said:-"Thatperjurywasveryfrequentlycommittedinthesecourts, andcommittedwithimpunity.He wasnotsuggestingthatKalgoorlie

Thisdeplorableconditionisobviouslyaresultofaspinelesssystemofeducation,andisastriking refutationoftheabsurdcontention thattherecanbeamoralitywithoutreligion.Perjuryissorampant becausereligionissodead.Anoath issomethingessentiallyreligious.It hasnovalue,sanctity,orbindingforce apartfromitsreligiousaspect.Those whohavenoreligionhavenorespect forit. Hencethefrequencyofperjuryinourcourts.OurGovernmentschoolshavetriedtorearmen onasystemofmoralitywhichignores religion,God,anddivinesanction. Theyinculcatedvirtue.for"virtue's sake."andbecausevirtueis"respectable,'!or"reasonable,"ormanly.Theyhaveproducedageneration whodespisevirtueandmorality,and arereadytocommitanycrime if theyaresureof"coveringtheir tracks.Theyfearonlytheminions ofthelaw.Perjurersarepeopleto whomtheminionsofthelawfindit extremelyhardtosheethometheir. crimes.Thecrime,accordingtothe judgeabovequoted,isonethatcan hecommittednearlyalwayswithimpunity.Hencetheproductsofan irreligiousmorality,thosewhoseonly codeofmoralityreallyisthatnothingiswrongsolongasbyany ingenuitytheycanescapepunishment foritinthislife,perjurethemselves asoftenasperjurycanservetheir purpose.Thatthethingissinful, base,ignoble,debasing,andreeking withinjustice,istothemimmaterial. Iftheycanescapetheconsequencesof acriminalprosecution,theirconsciencesareatrest,andtheytaketheir placeas"moral"and"respectable" membersofsociety.Ifallwhoare guiltyofperjuryinW.A.werepunishedastheyoughttobe,societyand themoraleofourcourtswouldcertainlyhegreatlyimproved,butthe numberof"respectable"peopleat largewouldbejustascertainly greatlydiminished,endourgaols wouldneverholdallthe guiltY.

ColonelPaulKenna,V.C.,whowas latelypromotedtothecommandof the21stLancersisoneof themostdistinguishedCatholicofficersintheArmy.Hewaseducated atStanyhurst,andpassedthenceto theRoyalMilitaryCollegeatSandhurst.Directlyheobtainedhiscommission,hispromotionwasalmost phenomenallyquick,fortherearefew mento-daywhohaveobtainedcommandoftheirregimentinsoshorta time.ItwasintheEgyptiancampaignin1898thatColonelKenna obtainedhisfirsthonorsforactive service.Hisbraveryinthechargeof the21stLancersatOmdurmanwas awardedwiththatmostcovetedof alldecorations-theVictoriaCross. Threeyearspreviouslyhehadexemplifiedthatoldbuttrueadage,that nownedthanwar,'byobtainingthe medaloftheRoyalHumaneSociety forsavingthelifeofamanwhohad fallenintotheLiffeyatDublin.Ever sincetheEgyptiancampaignCoToisel Kennahasbeenmarkedoutforone distinguishedpostafteranother.For hisservicesintheSouthAfrican War,wherehewas'inthefront,'in moresensesthanone,hewasawarded theDistinguishedServiceOrderMedal. Thechildrenattendingthenuns' schools,bothhigh-andelementary, hadapleasantpicnicaboutamile outsidethetownonWednesday,June 19th.Thereweresmallmoneyprizesforthedifferentevents,whichwere spiritedlycontestedforbytheyoungsters.Afteramostenjoyableday thechildrenwentbacktotheirhomes wellsatisfied,buttired.

Forthesixty-thirdyearinsuccessionthegreatprocessionofCatholic childrenandmembersofthevarious guildsandconfraternitiesfrom21 outofapossible36missionsinthe districtofManchesterandSalford, tookplacethroughthepublicstreets ofManchesteronMay2-1andnotwithstandingthemanyyearsthis greateventhasbeenobserved, wheninthenaturalorderof thingsonewoublexpect to findpublicinterest somewhat lax,theprocessionarousedentitle. sillS111,generalandwhole-hearted,from Catholicsandnun-Catholics,itsis neverseeninthecityofManchester, onlywhen"theCatholicscholars" aretowalk. Theweather,amostimportantfactor,hadtobetakenintoconsideration.Althoughtheskywasheavy andovercast,withbutoccasional gleamsofsunshine.notasingledrop ofrainfell.Theair,however,was verysultry.Fromeighto'clockin themorningthecentreofthecity wasgivenupentirelytotheCatholic authorities.Bythathourtheelectrictrainserviceandvehiclesofevery kindhadbeenprohibitedtrafficking onthelineofroute,Barriershad beenerected,andpeoplehadalready takenuptheirpositionsbehind,intentonwatchingthevariouscontingentspassingandrepassing.
