ThecomaparativenoveltyofaProtestantscholasticpilgrimageatthe Vaticanhasbeenastrikingfeatureof thepastweek(saysthe"Catholic 'limes"ofMay17).Theteachers, forty-twoinnumber,mostlyladies,of

theProvidedSchoolsofGrimsby, madeaneducationaltourinItaly withtheVice-PresidentoftheEducationCommittee,Mr.WhiteleyWilkin. Theschoolswereclosedfortwoor threeweekswhilethetourlasted.In RometheVatican.authoritiesaccorded themfreeaccesstoalltheshow-places undertheApostolicAdministration.

Fr.Ehrle,S.J.,Prefect,receivedthem inthelibraryand,asacicerone,addressedtheminausefulspeech.They weretheeshownoverthelibraries, halls,museums,andcollectionsbyVaticanemployesandthreeEnglishCollegestudent-priests. HisHoliness welcomedtheeducatorsintheHallof Tapestries.Inthepresenceofthe ArchbishopsofWestminsterandTrebizoral:ofBishopsStanleyandGiles; ofMgr.CroninandtheRev,Dr.Jackson.Mgr.PriorintroducedthevisitorstoPiusX.ThePopedelivereda gracefuladdress.Hethankedthem fortheirvisittohimself,andbegged thatGodwouldguidethemwithHis grace.andaid'theminbrineringup thoseundertheirchargeaccordingto theprinciplesofmoralityandreligion. thatCatholicnewspapers,especially thoseofItaly,shouldbemoresecular thantheyare,and,therefore,more likelytobereadbythegeneralpublic inclubsandcafes.Hewishedthem tooccupythemselveslesswiththeoloicyandmorewithsecularmatters,so airtoreachawidersphereofreaders. HisHolinessappearedtobeinthebest ofspiritsandnotintheleastoppressedwithcare.ashehasbeensooften describedasbeing,butquitecheerful andinexcellenthealth.Hegavehis blessingtoalljournalists,independent ofcreed.whodefendedtheinterestsof Christianityagainsttherisingtideof vulgaratheism.

ItisreportedthatProfessorGiu seppeTomasettiispublishinginEnglish,withMacmillan,aworkonthe HistoryoftheMiddleAgesinRome, in,fourvolumes:theEnglishtranslationistheworkofF.MarionCrawford.theAmericannovel-writer.Tomasetti'stextislikelytobeofvalue, asnooneknowsbetterthanhethe mediaevalrecordsatheCityand CampagnaofRome.

Anotablepictureoftheprogressof theCatholicChurchinmissionary countriesmaybededucedfromtherecentpublicationonCatholicMissions issuedbyPropaganda.Thisportly volumeof1,000pagesshowstheactualstateofthemissions.inthewhole worlduptotheendof1906.There hasbeenamarvellousincreaseinthe numberofCatholicsinthesemissionarycountriessincethepreviousissue ofthe"CatholicMissions"in1901.

Inthecountriesunderthejurisdiction ofPropagandathesumtotalofthe Catholicsin1901was25,852,209 andnowthisnumberinthecourseof

fiveyearshasrisento30,619,708thatistosay,nearlyfivemillionsof anincrease. WhenKingAlphonsoofSpainmarried anEnglishPrincess,itrequiredno prophettoforetellaconsiderablemitigationofEnglishanimositytowards thatcountryandsomeabatementin thebitternessofthecriticismpassed byEnglishmenoneverypersonand thingSpanish.Englishprejudice againstSpainwasthegrowthofcenturiesofreligiousbigotryandnationalantipathies;tofindanEnglishmanoranAustralian,evenaCatholic Australianinwhomprejudiceagainst Spainfoundeduponignoranceand nursedbyfalsehoodandhatred.was notdeeplyengrainedwasalmost imposside.Naturallyitwilltake sometimeforthetruthtoenlightenthem.TheEna-Alpherino marriage,byremovingprejudicewill doagooddealtospreadthelight. AlreadywehaveindicationsofabetterunderstandingbyEnglishmenrespectingSpanishmannersandcustoms.TheLondon"DailyNews"is thelastplaceoinewouldlookfora goodwordwrittenaboutSpain.The followingobservationsmadebyMr. C.F.G.Mastermaninthatpaper are.therefore,worthquoting.This gentlemantellshisreadersthat:-"All loversofSpainwillrejoicewiththe rejoicingSpanishpeopleatthebirth ofanheirtothethrone.Andall EnglishvisitorstoSpainfallunderthe spellofherfascinationandbecomeher lovers,exceptthosewhoareindignant becauseSpanish'waysarenotEnglishways.'

lishandAmericascomplaintsaccom-. panythetouristroutesinSpain. Sometimesitistheslownessandinfrequencyofthetrainswhicharethe causeofgrievance,althoughwhySpain shouldnotruntrainsslowlyandinfrequently,ifshecarestodoso,is aquestionhardtoanswer.SometimesitisthefoodintheSouth, stronginoilandgarlicandpeculiar flavourstheSouthernSpaniard,singularlyenough,suitinghismenuto theSpanishpalateratherthanto thepalateofthecasualtourist.Sometimesitistheabsenceofservilityon thepartofthepeople.TheSpanish workmaniscourteous,butnotservile; heisconvincedthatheisasgooda manasanyintheState,andabetter manthananyforeigner.Thispride anddignityisannoyingtothosewho havebeenaccustomedtoobtainservility-ataprice-and.areusedtothe fawningdeferenceofSwitzerlandand theRivieraandpartsofItaly.Ina Spanishinn,ifyouwillbehavelikea Christian,bemerry,acceptthingsas theyare,treatthehostandthewaiter withrespect,youmaybeaverywelcomeguest.Ifyouarefussyandimpatientandinsolent,youcango;howevermuchgoldyoumaycarelessly offer,you-andyourgold-maygo."

Weread,further:-"Sometimes, again.thecomplaintisfierceagainst theswarmsofbeggars-men,women, andchildren-whichhauntthestepsof thechurchesandinfesttheplacesof pilgrimage.Theyliealldayinthe sunshineandbegdolefullyortruculentlyofthepassers-by.Thetourist isindignant.Intotheworkhousewith them.orintotheprison.heurges, thattheyr*aynolongercomebetween thewindandhisnobility.HeforgetsthedifferencebetweenNorthern andSouthernways.Spainhasno workhousesinwhichtoplaceherold, hermaimed,herunfortunate.guarded withhighwallsandlocked'doors,be-

Iwasoncean unconsciousmemberofafestivalheld atToledoinhonourofaSaintwhose chapelissituatedonthewild,bare ,mountainsidewhichfacesthatamazingcity.Thewholetownhadbeen emptiedonehotafternoonoutonto theplaceofpilgrimage.Roundthe ,chapelwasafair,withvendorsof water,oforanges,ofsweetmeats,of children'stoys.Thepeoplehadput Iontheirbestdresses,formingariotousfeastofcolour. Theygathered, sittinginlittlegroups,father,mother, andchildren,withtheirpacketsoffood andbottlesofwine.Theydancedold SpanishdancesandsangoldSpanish music-sweetandmournful,with hauntingmelddies.Ihaveneverseen amoregood-temperedcrowd,amore temperatecrowd,ah'appiercrowd.It wassimplepleasureinthesunshine.I thoughtofaneveningonanEnitlish BankHoliday,andwonderedwhich race,ifanyrace,hadarighttodespisetheother."

Speakingoftherejectionofthe ledsooftentoinvestsonicofourIrish"Council"bytheunanimous scantycoinsonbooksunsparingly peopleandParty,the"Boulder praisedandrecommendedbywhatweStar"saysthatthisaction,asbeing

papers,UnionistandLiberal,condemmedtheproposedCouncilasun= workable,preposterously"unsubstantial."TheycondemneditevenbeforethegreatIrishConventionof 3,000people,ofallclasses,andofall interests,hadrejectedit.Itwas scarcelyplacedbeforethepublicwhen oneofthegreatEnglishdailiespredictedthatitwasinevitablydestined tohenumberedamongthe"SlaughteredInnocents,"tobecatalogued withthe"smokinghetacombsof slaughteredbabes."TheEnglish dailiesalsosaidthatnoonewould bemoresurprisedthanMr.Birrell himselfifhisinsultingBillwould wouldhavebeenaccepted.Theycalleditatitsverybirtha"still-born" bill.

Wecongratulatethe"Austral Light"onthenicediscriminationit exercisesintheselectionoftopicsfor discussioninitspages.Thismonth inafewshortparagraphs,itdeals withtheneedof"ACatholicBookReview,"andtheimmenseadvantageit wouldtohetoreadingCatholics.Unfortunately,wethinkthatourAustralianCatholics,especiallyourAustralianCatholicyouths,havebeenstrickeninamoreorless.desperatemannerwithgreatmentalblightofthe age-theincapacitytoreadanything moreseriousthanatrashynovelor thescrappyparagraphsandsillyinanitiesthatposeforwitticisms.To anyonewhoobservesevensuperficiallywhatthegreatermassofpeoplereaditismanifestthatanything serious,instructive.orsteadyingis rigidlyrejected.Mentalvigourand concentrationseemstohavevanished. Themindsofthemajorityofpeople aredebilitatedbythereadingoflight andsuperficialliterature.

Hypocriticalsympathyitriayalienate.Butthealienationofhypocriti, calsympathyisnotlossbutagain toanycause.Iftheminersonthe goldfieldswere"lockedout"andofdeemedreliableCatholicperiodicals,arefusaltoacceptasubstantialmea-feredworkagainonlyonthecondiwhichbooksturnedouttobemeresureofrelief,willalienatethesym-tionoftheiracceptingaquarterora impositions,thatwehavelongsincepathsofmany.HadMr.Birrell'sthirdofthewagestheynowreceive ceasedtoplaceanyconfidenceinsuchBillbeencalculatedtogive"sub-orarejustlyentitledto,wouldtheir refusalofthequarterloaforthethird "oftheloaf"alienatethesympathyof the"Star"fromthem? Werather thinkthatthesympathyofallAustraliansarewiththetimber-workers, whorefusedtoacceptawagetheybelievenottobealivingwage. inthislifefromthesamefact.Hence thegreatnumberofuselessbookswe aresupposedtopurchasebecause writtenbyCatholicswhoveryoften, havenofitnessbyreasonofability orknowledgeforsuchawork,and whoareevidentlynotadversetogain agreatamountofmaterialadvantage fromtheirlaboursinbehalfofthe truth,asthealmostexorbitantprice oftheirbookswouldleadonetobeHove.Suchwaresarenaturally pushedbythepublishinghouses,and itismostregrettablethatthecol-

stantial"relief,nodoubtitsrejection byIrelandwouldhaveproducedsome sucheffect.ButtheBillwouldnothave afforded"substantial"relief.There-

ineightdepartments,butthechange wouldhavebeenfortheworse.Bad, corrupt,andcostlyasisthepresent Castlesystem,thenewsystemasintendedintheabandoned"Council" wouldhavebeenagreaterfailurestill. ThenewBillcouldnotsimplifythe presentadministrativemachineit wouldhaveaddednewcomplications. Itwouldnothavemadetheofficials moreamenabletoIrishopinionit wouldhavemadetheLord-Lieutenant anabsoluteautocrat.withmorepower overIrishmanthanKingEdwardhas umnsofanyCatholicperiodicalorthantheCzarhasoverhissubshouldbeopentopuffsofthem.IfjectsitwouldhavemadetheLordaCatholicperiodicalissevereandLieutenantabsolutemonarchinIrediscriminatinginitscriticismson otherworks,itoughttobemuch moresoonCatholichooks.None butthereallygood,theverybest Catholicbooksshouldbeeventolerated.Fornoonehastimenow-a-

landwithunlimitedpowersinthedepartmentsplacedunderhiscontrolby theBill.Itwouldnothaveadjusted thefinancialrelationsbetweenEnglandandIreland.Itwouldnothave restoredtoIrelandthe£4,000,000 daystowaste.Toreadmany,orover-taxationshepayseveryyearinperhapsany,ofthehooksfavourablytotheBritishTreasury.TheOmanreviewedinourjournalswouldcer-cia.1arrangementsofthedroppedBill tainlybeaninexcusablewasteofwould,afterbeingsomeyearsin time,andsuchreviewsareveryoftenoperation,havebeggaredandbankmischievous,becausetheydiscredittheruptIreland.TheBillwasnotan entirebulkofCatholicliterature.Asadvanceitwasaretrogressiona forourselves,wehavepersistentlyre-re-action.Itwasnota"substantial fusedtonoticeinourcolumnsbooksmeasureofreform."Itwasnotevena merelybecausetheywereCatholic,andIcrumbfromtheEnglishDives'table. sentfornoticebyCatholicpublishers,WhyIrishmenshouldbe,expectedto unlessthebookorpamphletwasreal-Iforegotheirrightandtheirjustdelydeservingfavourablenotice.Ca-`mends,andtoacceptthecrumbsof tholicshavearighttotheverybestcharity,wecannotunderstand.They

OnFridaylast,June14th,his Lordship,theBishop,celebratedthe forty-fourthanniversaryofhisordinationtothepriesthood.Hewasthe recipientofnumerouscongratulations andmanygifts.HisLordshiphas nowlabored44yearsinW.A.,andin allthattimehehasbeenidentified withworkoftheChurchinthisState aswellaswitheverythingthathas atreatedthematerialprogressofthe Stateitself.ThereisscarcelyanecclesiasticalbuildingintheStatewhich doesnotoweitsexistencetohipi. Themissionconductedlastweekby theVeryRev.FatherMurray,0.5S.R. andFatherLynch,(.'.SS.R.,atCottesloe,wasbroughttoacloseonlast Sundayevening.Theweatherduring thewholeweekwasexceptionallyunfavorabletolargecongregations,but thegreatinclemencyoftheweather seemedtobenobartoattenhanceat themission.Thelargecongregations whichattendedduringtheearlypart oftheweekincreasedstillfurthertowardstheendoftheweek.Theattendanceduringthelastnightsofthe missionwassplendid.Theclosing sermonwaspreachedbytheVeryRev.
