Itisextremelyregrettablethatin thisyoungcountryofours,itstwo chiefindustries-thetimberandminingindustriesaresaidnottobe abletoaffordsuchawageaswill supportthelabouringmanwithhis wifeandfamilyinreasonablecomfort.Thisispracticallythecause ofthepresenttroubleinthetimber mills.TheArbitrationCourtdelciminedaminimumwage,andsaidthat wastheonlyonetheindustrycould affordtogive. Themillemployees declarethatwhilstthewageisadequateforthesingleman,itisaltogetherinadequateforthemarried man.Mostpeoplewhohave,personalexperienceontheMillswillquite agreewiththecontention.Single menthereseemtohaveenoughnot merelyforsupport,butalsoforthe "cupthatcheers,"andforgambling. Itisunfortunatethatperhapsamong agreatmanyofthem,theselatterindulgencesabsorbthegreaterpartof theirwages.Withthemanwhohas awifeandfamily,however,itis quitetheopposite. Ithasbeen knowninthepastthatwithahigher rateofwagesprevailing,marriedmen becamesohopelesslyentangledindebt inthestoresofthemillcompanies wheretheyworked,thattheirposition wasunmixedslavery.Theywere boundhandandfoottotheownerof

Mr.GeorgeR.Simsiscontributing tothe"Tribune"aseriesofarticles, undertheheading,-TheCryofthe' Children,"whicharelikelytocreate asensation.Theinfantmortalityis notdecreasing.Oneequarterofthe totaldeathseveryyearinEngland andWalesarethoseofinfantsiintiAr twelvemonths. Onecontributing causetoinfantmortalityandtheincreaseofphysicalandmentaldegenerateshecallsseriousattentionwhich itispossiblefortheLegislatureto dealwithatonce.
Thiscauseisthedrinkinghabit amongwomen.Thatthishabitis notdecreasingisshown-fromthe figuresintheannualreportsofthe Registrar-General.Takingthequinquennialperiods1875-9and1900-4, thedeathratepermillionfromalcoholisminmalesshowedanincrease of61.5percent.,whilethatforfemalesshowedanincreaseof184per cent."Theprincipaldrinkers,"writesMr.Sims,"arenottheyoung unmarriedwomen,'butthemarried womenandthemiddle-agedwomen. Inthecrowdeddistrictswherethere ismuchpovertyitisnotanuncommonthingtofindthebarswellpatronisedbywomeninthemorning, fairlyfilledwithwomenintheafternoon,andiretheeveningpackedwith women,manyofwhomhaveinfants intheirarms."
Thewriter'soneaim,atpresent,is .tofocustheattentionofthereader tothepresenceofthechildinthe public-house.Hewishes"toshow thedistressingandoftenappallingcircumstancesinwhichthechildinarms frequentlytheunweanedbabe,iskept inthefoulatmosphereofthecrowdeddrinking-bartillpastmidnight." STRONGCONDEMNATIONBY BISHOPWHITESIDE. HisLordshiptheBishopofLiverpool(Dr.Whiteside)hadmuchthat wasinterestingandimportanttosay inhisannualaddresstothecongregationofSt.Cecilia'sChurch,Tuebrook,Liverpool,ontheoccasionof hisvisitationlately.
HisLordship,attheoutset,dwelt onthesubjectofFaith,pointingout theincreasedresponsibilitiesthatenteredintothelivesofthosethat hadreceivedthatgift.,astheresult oftheenlightenmentwhichfollowed itsreception.Passingontoanexplanationoftheconductandluties ofCatholicsineverydaylife,hisLordshiplamentedthefactthatsomany youngCatholicsbecameassoeieted withundesirablecompany.Whenpeopleofasuitableageandpositionin lifedesiredtomarry,company-keeping waslawfulandnecessaryinorderthat theincreasedknowledgeofdispoiition thatwouldresultmightenablethose whocontemplatedmatrimonytojudge astothesuitabilityorotherwiseof eachotherbeforebecominglifepartners.Company-keeping,howe for Itsownsakewasnotlawfulwhenthe partieswereofanunsuitableage,and whentherecouldnotbeanyimmediate prospectofmarriage.Parentscould notbetooparticularinamatterof thatkind.andtheymustinsiston beingobeyedbytheirchildrenonthat point,rememberingthatifany(S'them fellintogrievoussinastheresultof theundesirablecompanykeepingof whichhehadspokentheresponsibilitywouldrestwiththeparents Continuing.hisLordshipsaidthatthe secondpointhewishedtoimpress uponparentswastheirresponsibility withregardtotheFaithoftheir children.Faithhadtobedeveloped intheyoung,anditmightbeendangeredbyerroneousteachingorthe evilcompanionshipthatwastoooftentobefoundinnon-Catholic schools.Helovethedifficultiesthat wereofteninthewayofSending veryyoungCatholicchildrentoCatholicschoolswhentheyweresome distanceaway,butthere.wasnoexcusewhateverforsendingthemto non-Catholicschoolsaftertheyhad reachedtheageofsevenoreight, andthosethatdidwerecommittinga greatsinandwerenotfittoreceive Absolution.Letthem'rememberthat inanon-Catholicschoolitwasnot onlythefaithofthechildthatwas unsafe.itwasalsoitspurity,for, walkingonthebroadroad,Protestantshaddifferentideaswithregard topuritytoCatholicswhofollowed thenarrowpath.Itwasofvitalim*portance.then,thattheirchildren should!SendCatholicschools%and hehopedthatparentswouldrealise theveryseriousresponsibilitythat restedupontheminthatrespect.Reverting.tothesubjectofcompanykeepinganditsresults,hisLordship saidthatoneoftheprincipalcauses ofthelossofFaithwasthecontractingofmixedmarriages.Thatwas amatterwhichtheymustnotlook uponfromaworldlypointofview theymusttaketheCatholicstandard: mustlistentothevoiceofthe Church. Therewasnothingabout whichshewassocarefulastheprotectionoftheFaithofherchildren, andnothinginjuredhersomuchas dietmixedmarriages.Ilehadnotthe statisticsrelatingtothoseunfortunatealliancesbeforehim.hutheknew thatatthepresentmomenttherewere morethaneightthousandchildren,,the issueof'mixedmarriages.;being broughttinbyProtestantsinthedioceseofLiverpool Wemightaddtothestricturesof Dr.Whitesideoncarelessparentsthat inW.A.,inthecityofPerthand,the countrytowns.parentsseemtohave noconceptionoftheirdutytotheir children. AgiftedIrishlady,whosedeath isadistinctloss-totheranksof literature'inAmerica,hasjustpassed awayinthepersonofMrs.MaryElizabethBlake,thebelovedwifeofDr. JohnG.Blake,ofBoston.This giftedandholywoman,whosework inproseandpoetrywilllongcommemorateherfaithandgenius,wasa MissM'Grath,ofDungarvan,Co. Waterford. InthisancientIrish townshewasbornin1840,emigratingtoAmericawithherparentswhen onlynineyearsold.ThefamilysettledatQuincy,Massachussets.Taught atfirst,byherfather,whowasan educatedman,MissM'Grath,after graduatingfromtheQuincyHigh School,attendedaprivateschoolin Boston,andlater,forspecialcourses inmusicandthelanguages,theAcademyoftheSacredHeart,Manhattanville.Hermusicalandliterary giftsdevelopedtogether,andfora timeitseemeddoubtfulwhichwould havethefirstplace.Herfirstliteraryworkappearedin"ThePilot," the"BostonGazette,"atthetime editedbythefamousP.B.Shillaber,andinthe"Transcript."She wasthenbutagirlinherteens.
InJune,1865,MissM'Grathwas marriedtoDr.JohnG.Blake,a graduateoftheHarvardMedical School,andsoononeofBoston'sforemostphysicians. Elevenchildren blessedthisunion,ofwhomsixsurviveher. Twodiedinearlyinfancy;butthegreatgriefofherlife wasthelossofthreebeautifulboys rangingfromfourtosevenyearsin asingleweek,duringanoutbreakof diptheria.Duringtheyoungyears ofherchildren,Mrs.Blakewasheart andsouldevotedtothem,andallowed herselfsuchliteraryworkasherpopular"RamblingTalks"inthe"Boston Journal."merely asarecreation fromthearduouscaresofmotherhood.Poems,however,welledfrom herheartspontaneously."Yousing likethebirds,becauseyoumust." saidDr.OliverWendellHolmesto her.Shekeptupherstudiesand accomplishmentsforherchildren's sake.andstudiedforthemandwith them. ThisMinisterendeavouredtoplace religiousservicesonthesamefooting aspublicmeetings,andinsistedona declarationfortheholdingofthe services.However,thelawof1881 wasdrawnupwithaviewtomeetingsatwhichdiscussionmighttake place.Butnodiscussionisallowed intheCatholicceremonies.Thislaw, then,couldnotbeapplicabletothem.
In1905,M.Briandhadacknowledged thetruthin1906,hetriedtomake thelawof1881applicabletoreligious servicesbyrequiringasingledeclarationandtheorganisationofasingle boardforthewholeyear.Butthis wasincontradictionwiththelaw, whichdemandedasmanydeclarations asmeetingsandtheestablishmentof aresponsiblebureauforeachmeeting.
