Galway.-TheExclusionofQueen's College,Galway-Apubeicmeeting washeldinGalwayonFriday,Feb. 15.withtheobjectofprotesting againsttheexclusionofthelocal Queen'sCollegetfronttheUniversity schemeoutlinedbyMr.Bryce.His GracetheArchbishopofTuanewho presided,deliveredavigorousspeech andconcludedbymovingaresolution whichwaspassedunanimously,pro- testingagainsttheattitudeof the Governmentandexpressingtheopin- ionthat,ifGalwayQueen'sCollege weregivenanequalpositionwiththe otherQueen'sColleges,itwouldbecometheproseerouscentreofintellectuallifeandactivityinConnaught. LetterswerereadfromtheBishopsof Galway,Clonfert.Elphin.andKillala. sympathisingwiththeobjectofthe meeting. Thegatheringwasboth largeandrepresentative.

"ThepresentsessionofParliament promisestobeoneofthemostfaithfulinbearingimportantmeasuresfor Irelandthathasopenedformany years. ABillfortheextensionof NationalSelf-Government,aBillto placethehighereducationofthecountryonaproperbasis,andaBillfor thefinalsettlementofthequestionof theevicyedtenantsareamongthe measuresthathavebeenalreadypro- mised. Thepassingoftheseinto lawwill,nodoubt,dependlargelyon theattentionwhichthemembersof theIrishParliamentaryPartywillbe abletogivethemwhentheycomeup fordiscussionintheHouseofCommons. DUBLIN.-TheSacredHeartHome -FatherPower,S.J.,preachedan elo!tientandunaassivesermoninaid oftheSacred!kartHome,Drumcondra, intheChurchofSt.Francis Xavier,UpperGardiner-street,on Sunday.February17th. DoctorWindleandtheClaims ofCork-AttheCork,Literaryand ScientificSociety,onTuesdayevening.February14,Dr.Windledelivered aninterestingaddress,inthecourse ofwhich'headvocatedtheestablishmentofalocalschoolofcommerce andaschoolofchemistry.Heshould also,hesaid,liketoseeaschoolof journalisminthecity.Therewas noplaceintheBritish'Isleswhere onecouldbemoresuccessfullycarried on. Southernyouthshadaready wit,aquickgraspofasituation.an aptitudeforexpression.allpriceless forthejournalist.Thereweremany southernersinimportantpositionson theEnglishPress.Whatachance itwouldgivethemiftheyhadthat trainingwhichmightreadilybegiven theminCorkinconnectionwithother activities,andwithbutlittleextra expenditure.Theschemeoutlinedby Mr.Brycewasdisanpointing.Cork. aswellas.Belfast,wasfullyworthyof aUniversity.

Oneofthemostimportanteventsin theannalsoftheChurchinVictoria, wasthecelebrationoftheGoldenJubileeoftheNicholson-streetConvent ofMercyonMarchthe7th..Thisis thepioneerconventofVictoria.The celebrationhasaspecialinterestfor usinWestAustralia,becausethe Nicholson-streetConventisafoundationfromW.A.Thefoundressand hertwocompanionswereelevenyears beenoneforequalitywiththosewhoposessonecessaryinthemanufactureintheConventofMercy,Victoria differedfromtheminfaith.Thoughofaeratedwaters,entirelydispensingSquare,Perth.Ourreaderswillnot withallformsofprecipitantsandun-needtoberemindedthatthisisthe thesolutionproposedbyMr.BrycenecessarychemicalsaltsnotPI(Teri,'oldestconventinAustralia,.Itwas mightnotbeanabsolutelyidealone,includedinthemanufactureofdrinksfoundedin1816.InthatyearBishop theyoughttorecogniseitasanhon-forthepublic. Perthhaswatchedwithpleasureand delighttheVictoriancommunityincreaseandprosper,andcontinueto multiplythegoodworkswhichevery communityoftheorderhasatheart. Andinverytruththedaughtersof CatherineMcCauley,whowentforth frontourWesterncoasthavedonea workwhosevalueisaspermanentand solidasitisextensiveandbrilliant andsublimeintheunselfishdevotion, andwhole-souledself-sacrificewheals prompts,animates,andpermeatesit. Itisnowsixty-oneyearssincethe SistersofMercyarrivedinAustralia. InthedioceSeofPerththereare133 ormorereligiousoftheOlder,and theyhaveundertheirchargeintheir primaryandsuperior,andintheorphanagealtogether2,385children,not countingthisyear'sincrease.InVictoriatheprogressoftheSistersof Mercyisphenomenal.Landingat FitzroyinMarch,1857,theyopened aschoolonthefollowingAprilwith onlyninepupils. Shortlyafter theyopenedaboardingschool. In 1860theyopenedaHouseofMercyin whichtheyreceivedandtrainedgirls fordomesticservice.In1861they tookchargeoftheorphanageforboys andgirls.In8thDecember,1869, theylaidthefoundationstoneofthe presentmagnificentschoolbuildings which,whentheywerecompleted,had cost£18,000.TheConventChapel, erectedasamemorialtothefounM.UrsulaFrayne, cost27.000. InthedioceseofMelbournethereareatpresent186SistersofMercy,andtheyhaveunder theircharge5.668children.

Dr.Goolddecidedin1857toobtain nunsforhisdiocese.Threeofthe Perthnunsvolunteered.Thesewere Rev.MotherUrsulaFrayne(foundress andfirstsuperioress).Rev.MotherM. ZavierDillon,andRev.MotherM. JosephSherlock,thelastofwhom stilllives.OnarrivinginVictoria, Dr.Gooldgaveuptothemthe.little cottageinNicholson-street.,inwhich hehimselfresided,astheirabode untilamorefittingconventcouldbe built.

Theattendancewasfarinexcessof anticipations,andthecommitteewere naturallyagreeablysurprisedatthe largenumberpresent.

ThemusicwassuppliedbyMr.J. Championinhisusualsatisfactory manner.whilstWieE.Kellymadean efficientmasterofceremonies.

Oneofthefeaturesofthesocial wasanIrishjigcontributedina splendidmannerbyMr.Wilson.who receivedgreatapplause.

Atintervalsduringtheevening gramaphoneselectionsbyMrTait'sinstrumentwerecontributed,andthe wholeofthearrangementsforhe evening'senjoymentweresplendidly carriedout,bringingforthencomiums fromall.

IntheMasonicHall,onMonday evening,aconcertinaidoftheGeraldtonConventBuildingFund,was givenbythemembersofthelocalLiedertafel,theOrchestralSociety,and thepupilsoftheSisters.Fortheattendanceandsuccessofthecontributions,itwasoneofthebest.entertainmentspresentedtoaGeraldton audience. Thehallwaswellfilled, and,rightthrough,manifestationsof applauseindicatedtheappreciationof thepatrons.Principalpraiseisdue forthesuccessoftheentertainment, tothemembers.ofthebeidertafeland OrchestralSocieties,whoseachievementswoulddonodiscrodittoabody ofmetropolitanexperts. Theannualsportsandhallunderthe auspicesofthelocalbranchOfthe H.A.C.B.SocietyeventuatedonWednesday,andattractedalargeconcourseofonlookers,whospentapleasantday,theweatherbeingall thatcouldbedesired.Theprincipal events,unfortunately,werenotvery wellfilledhutsomeinterestingracingwas,nevertheless,witnessed,and severalofthefinishescalledforthe bestinthejudgestodecidetowhom theprizesshouldbeawarded. Refreshmentsandfancystallswereconductedbytheladiesintheshedonthe ground,andafairvolumeofbusiness wastransacted,eachoftheassistants vieingwithoneanothertoobtainthe bestresult. Theannualplainandfancydress ballinconnectionwiththeabovewas heldintheMechanics'Instituteinthe eveningandprovedasuccessinevery way.aboutfortycouplesindulgingin dancingtillthesmallhoursofthe morning. Themusicwassupplied byTomney'shand,fromYork.which wasgreatlyappreciatedbyallpresent.Mr.BrodycarriedoutthedutiesofM.C.inhisusualaccustoffled style. Thedresseswornbythe ladies(mostofwhomappearedin eveningcostume)lookedverypretty andbecoming,butonlytwoorthree donnedfancy-dress.Thegentlemen's committee,consistingofMessrs.Sullivan,Quinlan,Duff,Blechynden.and McInerneyaretobecomplimentedon thesuccessoftheireffortsinconnectionwiththefunction.Duringa shortintervalrefreshmentswereservedinthesupper-room,towhicha largenumbersatdowntoawellfilledtableofdelicacies.Theladies' committee,comprisingMrs.Hines, Mrs.Newby,Mrs.Edwards,Mrs. BoyleandMissMcInerneylookedafter thetablesandassistedatthesupper. Itiswell-knowntophysiciansthat ruptureoftheheart,thoughrare, doessometimesoccur;sothat,tous, "dyingofabrokenheart"issome- thingmorethanmetaphoritmaybe asadreality.Thisaccidentmayoccur,andprobablymostfrequently occur,indeceasedconditionsofthe organs.Butsuchcasesdonotdemandourattentionfornodiseaseor weaknesscanbepredicatedofthat Heartwhichwasbrokenforus. Letmenowdirectattentionmoreminutelytothephenomenaobservedin anexamination.

Theheartandtherootsofthegreat vesselswhicharisefromitareenclosedinamembraneousbag,orsack, calledthepericardium,whichhas noexternal openingwhatever, butisperfectlyclosedorshut. Uponopeningthechestofa personwhohasdiedfromrupture oftheheart,thefirstthingobserved isthispericardium,orheartsack, moreorlessdistended,sometimes enormouslyso,bythebloodwhich whichhasbeenforcedintoitthrough theopeningintherupturedheart. Thebloodthuscontainedintheper-41/1ks oardiumundergoestheprocessofcoagulation,orcongealing.justasit woulddooutsideofthebody-ina bowl,forinstance-andseparatesinto twopartsaclear,light-coloredfluid calledserum,andathickerredportioncalledcrassamentum,orclotor,toexpressitinpopularlanguage, bloodandwaterthisveryphrase indeedbeingusedinmedicalaccounts ofsuchcases.Thisisnomeretheoreticaldescriptionderivedfromreading;forImyselfhavewitnessedwhat Inowdescribe.SomeyearsagoI madeapost-mortemexaminationofa manwhodiedsuddenlyofruptureof theaorta.oneofthegreatvesselsof theheart.withinthepericardium.The pericardiuminthiscasecontaineda largequantity-fullyapint,Ishould think-offluid;andonbeingopened thereflowedout,sidebyside,without mingling!aclearfluidlikewater,and athicker,darkredfluidlikeblood. Whattheknifeofthephysiciandoes inanordinaryexaminationwas roughlyperformedinourSaviour's casebythesoldier'sspear!andinthe onecaseasintheothertherecame forthbloodandwater.Inthisway, andinthiswayonly,haveIeverbeen abletoaccountinmyownmindfor theblood.andwater-which,itseems tome,musthavebeenconsiderablein quantitytohaveattractedtheattentionoftheApostleJohn,andbeenby himdeemedworthyofspecialrecord. Therewassuchevidenceofenthusiasmandgoodwillonallhandsin BoulderonMarch19duringtheSt., Patrick'sDaycelebrations,thathad theweatherremainedatallfavorable Itwouldinallprobabilityhavefructifiedintothemostsuccessfulgatheringof kindyetheldonthefields. Crowdsassembled'inthestreets,and whentheBoulderCityBandreceived thesignaltostrikeuptheopening march,theadjacentfootpathswere packed.Mr.Jas.Sheahanactedas marshal,andhadhisprocessionready welluptotime,a,departurefront practice,whichwasmuchappreciated. ItwascomposedoftheIrishNational Foresters,tothenumberofabout60 (inregalia).theladyIlihernians.and closeon100malemembers.Boththe ForestersandtheHibernianshadtheir banners,whichcaneasilytakeaforemostplaceamongstanybannersin theState.andaddedconsiderablyto theeffectoftheturnout.Themain featureoftheprocession.however, wasthehundredsofchildrenwho broughtuptherear.Apparentlythe Stateschoolyouthcouldnotresist thetemptationofjoiningin.forit seemedincrediblethattheCatholic schoolscouldaccommodateevenhalf ofthesturdyyoungcitizenswho rompedalongbehindtheHibernians. Thesonwhomsheintendsforthe priesthoodistherecipientofthemost acceptablefamilyfavors.Heispampered,clothedbetter,andreceivesmore marksofparentalregardthanhis brothersandsisters.Heisexcused morereadilyfromhelpin'gathome, andinmanywaysprideisfostered,as wellasselfishness.Thismaygoso farthatthechosenonebecomesobjectionabletoall,excepthisparents.
