THECHRISTMASSEASON.

Notwithinlivingmemoryhassuch atrulysoberholidayseasonbeen spentinIrelandasthatwhichhas justclosed. Theworkingclasses, freedfromdailytoil,mostlyshunned thepublichouses.Thattemperance, self-respect,andtruemanlinesswere theresultwasapparenttoall.To thosewhorememberthesadscenes which'markedtheholyseasontwentyfiveorthirtyyearsago,itwasajoyfulchange. Thatitwillencourage tofurthereffortthosewhoaredevotingthemselvestothepromotionof temperancegoeswithoutsaying.

NEWLICENSINGACTINFORCE.

OnNewYear'sDay,thenewLicensingAct,whichowesitsexistenceto acompromisebetweentemperancereformersandpublicans,cameintoforce. Whattheresultofitwillbecanonly becomeknownafterithasbeenworkingforareasonableperiod.The slumpinthevalueof.publichousepropertyinDublingoestoshowthat would-beinvestorsfeartherewillbe aconsiderabledecreaseinthesaleof intoxicatingdrinks.Asusual,many publicansdeclarethatthenewAct willhavetheeffectofdrivingpeople toshebeensorbogusclubs.Ifthe lawisonlyfirmlyenforced,sucha misfortuneasthosegentlemenpredict cannottakeplace.

Belfastmenofallpartieswillap- preciatethesituation,sofarasMr.

inthegoodNewYear.InParliament thePartyhasrenderedexcellentservicetomanyNationalinterests,and thedistinguishedleader,Mr.Redmond, hasgivenevidenceofabilityand statesmanshipoftheveryhighestorder.TheactionofthePartyinthe EducationBilldebatewasmarked bygreatjudgmentand.tact,andprovedsovaluablefortheprotectionof Catholicinterestsastocommandthe approvaloftheEnglishCatholicHierarchy.IntheadministrationofaffairsinIrelandthePartyhasexercisedverycloseandverywholesome .surveillanceovertheconductofofficialsofhighandlowdegree,andthe resultshavebeensatisfactory.Judg- ingfromalltheevidencesitmaybe saidthatthePartyandtheLeader standhighintheconfidenceofthe country.Andifanyassurancewere neededthatourpeoplebeyondthe seasareinthismatterinthorough accordwithIrishmenathome,itis surelytobefoundintheextraordinarysuccesswhichhasattendedthe recentmissionstoAmericaandAustralia.Theemphaticandunanimous pronouncementsofthosegreatassemblagesofIrishmen,layandclerical, andofthousandsofsympathiserswiththeIrishNationalmovement,place beyondalldoubtthedevotionofthe twogreatbranchesoftheNnglishspeakingracetothecauseofIrish NationalSelf-government.Removed bymanythousandsofmilesfromthe landwhichhasbeenthesceneofso manystrangevicissitudesandunequal- ledsorrows,theysendfromthegreat citiesoftheWestoroftheSouththe oneidenticalmessageofencouragementandsupport.Theymayatall timesbereliedonforassistanceWhen adeterminedblowistobestruckfor Irishfreedom.Inconclusion,Itmay besaidthatwhileinmanywaysthe HomeRulecausehasmadeaverydis- tinctandsatisfactoryadvance,the missionsofAmericaandAustraliawill alwaysdistinguishtheyearlsonas ayeartoberememberedwithgrati- tudeintheannalsinIrishNationality.n

OnDecember24th,therewasunveiledinWestminsterCathedralanew highaltar-apieceofarchitectural decorationthatisdestinedtofigure amongthegreatesttriumphsofBritish'architects.

ThisaltarwasdesignedbyMr. Bentley,whowasclaimedbydeath beforehisgreatworkwascompleted, orthemajorportionofthebuilding oftheCathedralevenfinished.'He leftbehindhimallthematerialneces- sarytoprogresswiththework,and Mr.Marshallhascarriedforwardthe greattaskthathisdeadcomradehad soadmirablycommenced.

Theonlypretextmktforwardfor thedissolutionofDecember-thereductionofthesupplementarySouthWestAfricanvoteof8,900,000marks -wasoftootrivialanaturetohoodwinktheCentreParty.Thecurtailmentofthisvote,whichannually reachesfromseventytoeightymillionsofmarks,wasnotinitselfconsideredaquestion,outsidetheImperialsupporters,ofsuchvitalandnationalimportastowarrantputting thecountrytotheexpenseofageneralelection;but,somepretexthad tobefound,anditservedthepurpose aswellasanyother. Adissolution,then-anappealtothepeoplewas-consideredthebestandonly meansofweakeningor'breakingupaltogetherthepowerofthatPartywithwhatvainendeavourthecabled resultsoftheelectionsshow."And inthebackgroundlurkotherthings," saysanappealissuedbythepro-

The"BallroomCave"isanimmense cavern,largerinspacethanthePerth TownHall,anditschiefattractions areitssizeandastreamoffresh waterflowingalongonesideofits floor.Therearemanybeautifulformationsalso.hittheypalebefore

thoseintheothercaves."The CauliflowerCave"isremarkablefat itsformationsrepresentingcauliflowersinprofusion,andresemblingto suchadegreethevegetableofthat name,thatitisdifficulttorealiseone isbutlookinguponaresemblance.. The"ChamberofMysteries"was nextpresentedtoourgaze,andIam contenttoallowitsnametoconvey myimpressionsofit. Afittingterminationtoourtourwasmade,bya viewofthe"JewelCase,"apocketin thewallofthecavewhichdefiesdescription,forasthecaretakerstruck withhiscandlevariousstalactites, melodiousnotesrangoutandechoed throughthechamber.

In,duecoursehelefthisnative *TimmandcametoDublintojointhe NovitiateoftheChristianBrothers, anditisapeculiarcoincidencethat nisdeathoccurreduponthe44thanniversaryofhisentranceintoreligious life.Itwasonthe31stDecember, 1862,thatheenteredtheNovitiate, andforthefollowingthreeyears hestudiouslyperformedhissecular andreligiousduties.Heeaveereat promiseasateacherandmanofenterprise,andin1865hewassentto CorktoteachintheBlarneylane schools,whichwerethenwelland favourablyrecognisedintheSouthof Ireland. LaterhewenttoOurLady's Mount,inthesamecity.Hisca../ seerinCorkextendedoverthirtyfiveyears,andduringthatperiodhis -workasaneducationalistwaswidely knownandesteemed.

Fortenyearsafterthedepartureof BrotherBurke,BrotherMoylanworkedhardandstrenuouslyasateacher inCork,asSuperior,aedin1900 hewaselectedtotheimportantpost ofSuperior-GeneraloftheOrder.

Inthispositionhedisplayedunusualenergyandenthusiasm,and manymenwhoto-dayholdhighpositionsowetheirinfluenceandsuccess tohispainstakingandencouragingactivityanddevotion.liewasamost earnestworker,andformanyyears hehadtostruggleagainstadelicate constitution,whichmadethegreat workofhislifeallthemoredifficult.

isTuam.Co.Galway,hewasno morethanfifteenyearsoldwhen,just forty-fouryearsago,onDecemberasst heenteredtheOrdertowhichhe himselfwasindebtedforhiseduoation.In1865hewassentasateachertoCork,wherehelabouredfor 35years,winningthereverenceof generationaftergenerationofsuccessfulpupils,whosesuccessinafterlife hisstrenuousandself-devotedlabors hadsecured.FromthehighestpositioninthegreatCorkschoolhewas calledtoDublintofillthesupreme positionofSuperior-GeneraloftheentireOrderwhichhascolonisedall Christianlands. PROGRESSOFCATHOLICISM'.

Twenty-fiveyearsagoeverycentre ofpopulationinEgypt-'thefewlarger onesexcepted-wasafanaticalstrongholdofelahometanism,inwhichChristianitywasbarelytolerated.The Catholicswerefewinnumbers,andinsignificantineveryrespect,butinsignificantchieflyintheprofessionand practiceoftheirCatholicity.They neverdaredtoassertthemselvespublicly,exceptbywayofapologisingfor theirexistence.Theybarelylived, andtheylookedthankfultobealive. TherewasnoplaceofCatholicworship,exceptinafewcentresof.Lower Egypt,atconsiderabledistances apart. TheCatholicschoolswere correspondinglyscarce,andfewandfar between.TheCatholicchildreneither receivednoeducationatall,orattendedtheschoolsoftheMahometaes oroftheGreekSchismatics.Large numberskeptcontinuallyfallingaway fromteefaith,stilllargernunhers fromthepracticeofit.Livingand labouringunderdisadvantagessuchas these,fewhumble,persecuted,and despised,theCatholicsofEgyptand theChurchwhichtheythencomposed, possessednopretentioustoanysocial standinginthecountrywhereitwas hardlypermittedtolive.Noworldly-mindedmanorwomaneverdared toboastofmembershipinitscommunion.

Allhonourtothedevotedsonsof St.Francis,whothroughagesofignoranceandpersecutionheldfaithful andwatchfulguardoverthatpoor remnantofthe,ancientfaithofEgypt, andkeptitlivingstillinthemidst ofdangersanddifficultiessuchas these.Brighterdaysdawnedat lengthupontheirhard-wroughtfield oflabour,lightingthewayforthem andforothermissionariessummoned fromtheWestforthepurpose,,toinaugurateanewerainthehistoryof theoldchurchofSt.MarkandSt. Athanasius.Down-troddenandtrampleduponforthirteencenturiesof Mahometanoppression,thereremained ofthatgrandoldchurchonlythe arewreckandtheruinofitsancient self.ThevisitortotheNileValley to-daywillfindthatnewlifeandnew vitalityhasbeeninfusedintothatold ruin. The FrancewhichpersecutestheChurch athometenaciouslyclingstothe honourofofficiallyprotectingthe ChurchinEgypt-notthroughanydevotednesstotheinterestsofreligion, butbecauseFrenchstatesmenfully realisethedevelopmentwhichthat Churchhasattained,andtheinfluence whichshesilentlyandsteadilyexercisesthroughouttheland.Theyknow wellthatwhateverprestigeFrance possessesinEgyptto-daysheowes tothatinfluence.andtothelabours oftheLatinmissionaries.Thestatesmenofarivalpowerareequallycognisantofthatfact.andhenceitis thateventheEmperorofProtestant GermanykeenlycovetstheCatholic ProtectorateoftheEast,andbids boldlyforthefavouroftheHoly Fatherinthehopeofmakingthat Protectoratehisown.

Therehaverecentlybeendiscovered neartheintersectionoftwoobscure streetsinthis,quartertheruinsofthe TempleofIsis,whicharoseabovethe sarcophagusofCleopatra.Beneath thoseruinsherembalmedbodyremainstobedisentombedfromthe oblivionof1925years.Itisexceedinglyprobablethattheroyalmummy willbefoundinanexcellentstateof preservation,andthatvisitorsto Egyptinthenearfutureshallbeaffordedtheghastlyprivilegeofgazing upontheveryfeatureswhichcharmed CaesarandruinedAnthony.Theindicationsofthehistorianssimilarly locatethemausoleumofAlexanderthe Great,almostsidebysidewiththat ofCleopatra,anddescribethebody enclosedinahugeglasssarcophagus. Whattreasuresfortheantkuarian andforEgyptlieburiedhereinthese twogruesomeobjects-possessingas theydosuchthrillinginterestand suchcloseconnectionwithallthat wasmightiestforgoodorillinthe Egyptofetherdays!
