Ofcourse,thesesentimentswere neverevenconceivedbytheeminent Archbishop,andwerenothingbuta tissueoffalsehoods.Onlearningof themisrepresentationArchbishopIrelandcabledto"L'Eclair"sayingthat theversionofhisdiscoursegivenin "LeMatin"wasfalse,andthat,in steadofseekingtoblamethePope, hestronglysupportedtheattitudehe hadtakenup.OntheArchbishop's denialbeingbroughtunderthenotice of"LeMatin,"thatpaperessayedto exonerateitselfbyattributingthe blametoitsAmericancorrespondent. Whethertheblameoftheincident restswiththeAmericancorrespondent ornot,itisquiteplainthat'someof theAmericanpapers,eitherthrough ignoranceordownrightinjustice,are littlebetterthanmostoftheEnglish secularpressinmisrepresentingthe positionofChurchaffairsinFrance. ThattheChurchinAmerica,hbwever, isunanimoudinitscondemnationof thepersecutorsoftheChurchin Franceandinentiresympathywith HisHolinessandtheFrenchclergy intheattitudewhichtheyhavetaken up,isevidentfromthepublished statementsofitsmosteminentrulers.
thepeopleandtheState,itisquite timethatthelotofthatusefulclass ofcitizen-theoldandinfirmprospector-receivedsomeattention.lie itwaswhoblazedthetraceout-back, andbroughtundernoticethevarious millingdistrictsscatteredalleverthe goldfieldsarea;andheitiswhois to-dayactingasthepioneerofthe industryinoutlyinglocalitieslooking furindicationsofthepreciousmetal. Withouthisaidthelifeofourgoldminingindustrycouldbeeasilyreckonedup,andthetimeascertained,to ayearortwo,whenWesternAustraliashouldhavelostitsproudposition ofchief-goldproduceroftheStates oftheCommonwealth.Theprospector,too,represents,generally,the besttypeofhumanityconnectedwith theminingindustry.lieisfearless andbravealmosttorashness,andis notdauntedbyamonthortwoon "tinneddog"andhadwater,noreven, inmanyinstances,byaperiodof privationonshortrationsandother incidentalhardships. Forhim, therefore,inhisoldageorinhis daysofhadfortune,theGovernment shoulddosomething.Ofcoursewe refertothe"genuine"prospector:the alleged"prospector"whonevergoes beyondaday'sjourneyfromapublic house.isnotincludedinoursympathy. OnDecember24th,therewasunveiledinWestminsterCathedralanew highaltar-apieceofarchitectural decorationthatisdestinedtofigure amongthegreatesttriumphsofBritish'architects.
ThisaltarwasdesignedbyMr. Bentley,whowasclaimedbydeath beforehisgreatworkwascompleted, orthemajorportionofthebuilding oftheCathedralevenfinished.'He leftbehindhimallthematerialneces- sarytoprogresswiththework,and Mr.Marshallhascarriedforwardthe greattaskthathisdeadcomradehad soadmirablycommenced.
Seenfromthewestendofthe cathedral,thebaldacchino,supported onitseightpillarsorVeronesemar- ble,isinstrikingicontrasttothe immensearchesandvaultsofunadorn- edbrickinthecathedralitself.Be- neaththebaldacchinoisthehigh altaritself,aplainblockofmarble weighingfourteentons,andraiseda fewstepsabovethefloorofthecoro. Thepillarssupportingthecanopyare rangedfouroneitherside,restingon plinthsofverdeantico,insetwith panelsofbrescia,andsurmountedbycapitalsofwhitemarble.Asiswell known.thelateMr.Bentleyinclined towardstheByzantineinhisstyleof architecture,andtheoreamentationof thehighaltarisessentiallyByzan- tine,thoughofalaterperiodthan thatofsomeoftheshaftsofmaiible inthenave.
WestminsterCathedralis'builtupon agiganticscale(itsnaveislarger thanthatofYorkMinster,whichhit- hertoheldprideofplaceinEngland), andtheworkofdecorationhasneces- sarilybeen.ofaboldandstrong style.

twicedefeatedonColonialquestionsmainlyby:theCentrePartyasserting itsdisapprovaloftheGovernment's colonialadministration.andthewaste ofmilitaryresourcesuponpettyadventures.ThewaruponPolishnationalityalsohasbeenmetwithevercolonialquestions.Somanytheir increasingresistance,whilethepersecutionofPolish-speakingchildrenhas butservedtoaccentuatethenational feeling.Anothermatter,inthisrespect,whichhasaddedtotheestrangementbetweentheImperialAdministrationandtne-CentreParty,wasthe attempt-whichfortunatelyfailed-to influenceRomeagainstthesolidarity oftheChurchandthepeopleofPoland.Allthesedifferencesservedto bringmatterstoaheadandthereforeitwasthatasurprisewassprung upontheEmpirewhen.inDecember last,thesuddendissolutionofthe Reichstagtookplace.Thatdissolution,itwouldappear,wasengineered mainlytoeffecttheonepurpose.-to trytoconsolidatethenumerousother GermanPartiesagainsttheCentre Party,whichhasalwaysactedasa ereakuponImperialeccentricities,and asasafeguardfortherightsofthe people.
Theonlypretextmktforwardfor thedissolutionofDecember-thereductionofthesupplementarySouthWestAfricanvoteof8,900,000marks -wasoftootrivialanaturetohoodwinktheCentreParty.Thecurtailmentofthisvote,whichannually reachesfromseventytoeightymillionsofmarks,wasnotinitselfconsideredaquestion,outsidetheImperialsupporters,ofsuchvitalandnationalimportastowarrantputting thecountrytotheexpenseofageneralelection;but,somepretexthad tobefound,anditservedthepurpose aswellasanyother. Thatthe causeofthedissolutionwas,aswe haveremarked,otherthanthedisagreementoverthispaltrysupplementary-vote,everyintelligent.studentof Germanpoliticsisfullyaware. "DownwiththeCentre"wasthecry whichresoundedfromtheopponentsof thatParty.TheCentrehadbeenthe determiningfactorinGermanpolitics; and,becauseithaduseditsvoteand itsinfluenceincheckinganextravagant militarismandintryingtopreserve therightsofthepeopleandtosave theirmoney,ithadbecomeintolerable totheImperialclique. Adissolution,then-anappealtothepeoplewas-consideredthebestandonly meansofweakeningor'breakingupaltogetherthepowerofthatPartywithwhatvainendeavourthecabled resultsoftheelectionsshow."And inthebackgroundlurkotherthings," saysanappealissuedbythepro-

ThePresidentwelcomedtheRev. Father,whoheknewwoulddohisutmostforthewelfareoftheSociety. FatherFaganbrieflyresponded,and thankedthemembersforthehearty welcomeextendedtohim.
Mr.Clarkehandedinhisresignation asPresident,butattherequestof FatherFagan,supportedbythemem- bers,hewithdrewhisresignation amidstapplause.Itwasunanimouslydecidedtothank thegentlemenwhocontributedprizes fortherecentsports.Mr.Fitzpat-rickwasalsothankedforthemanner inwhichheconductedthesportsmeetinMg. r.W.J.Rieussetreportedthathe hadagoodprogrammedrawnupfor thesocialgatheringwhichwilltake placeonWednesdaynext.

Havingcompletedallarrangements forthetrip,threeofourpartystartedoffdriving,whilesomehourslater Ifollowedonhorseback.Therideis alongandsomewhattediousone,but thereweremanyattractionsforme torelievethemonotonyasIsped alongtheoldblockroadoverwhich, withamerryparty,Itravelled20 yearsbefore,mydestinationbeing thenasnow,LakeYanchep. Settlementhasmadeitselffelt amongstthefertilespotsenroute.
