IfEnglishstatesmenwerecounting, upontheacetieseenceoftheIrishPartyinanyproposalswhichwouldhave theeffectofunderminingthenational movementtheywerelivinginafool's paradise. TheultimatumoftheIrishParty wasanIrishParliamentwithanexecutiveresponsibletoit.Ifanything wereproposedwhichwouldmakethe struggleforthatendmoredifficult; andnoteasier.itmostundoubtedly wouldberejected.
Iftheywereofferedsomethingnot consistentwiththeachievementof HomeRule-whichwouldblockthe waytoHomeRulefor,thisgeneration -suchaproposalwouldnotbeeither consideredoraccepted.
IfontheotherhandBritishstatesmenofferedproposalsalongthepath attheendofwhichwasthegoal whichtheIrishPartyhadinsight, thelatterwouldbefoundapractical aswellasadeterminedparty.

Somefewyearsago,when,underthe directionoftheDepartmentofAgriculture,experimentswerecommenced forthepurposeofascertainingwhethertobaccocouldbewellgrownon Irishsoil,thereweremanywhopredictedthatsuchexperimentswere boundtofail.Asamatteroffact, afteratrial,extendingoveraconsiderableperiodandinseveraldistricts,ithasbeenascertainedthat tobaccocanbegrownofaveryexcellentqualityinIreland.Accordingto thestatementintheHouseofCommonsofMr.Bryceafewclaysago, lastyear17-iacreswereundercultivationwithtobacco.Theposition to-dayisthisOutsideofthosewho havebeenmakingtheexperiment,nobodyisallowedtogrowtobaccoin Ireland,anditwouldbeacrime againstthelawtodoso.Butthe Billwhichwasintroducedsomeyears agoforthepurposeofremovingthe prohibitionoftobaccogrowinginIrelandisstillupontheorderpaper,and isunopposed.Itwill,however,never becomelawunlesstheGovernment cometothedecisionthatitisanunfairthingtopreventtheIrishpeople growingtobaccoontheirownsoil. Aslongagoas.1831anActwaspassedmakingitillegal'tocultivatetobaccowithinthekingdomofIreland, andeversincethenthepeoplehave beenstrictlyforbidden.tinderpains andpenalties,toattempttogrowtobacco.ThequestionnowarisesIs thatlawtobepermittedtocontinue inforce? AretheLiberals,whoprofesssomuchfriendshipforIreland.goingstillwithoutanyrealreasonto preventtheIrishpeoplefromgrowing anythingintheirownlandwhichthey mayfindprofitable? Howwasthatpossible?Lethimrecapitulateamendmentswhichthey askedfor. Theydeclaredthatthe twolimitationsinclause4,thefourfifthslimitationandtheurbanlimitation,wouldexcludebytheoperation one-halfoftheirschools.Helistenedwiththegreatestinteresttothe statementofMr.Birrellthatifthe opportunitywerenowgiventothe Governmenttoconsiderabasisui compromisetheywouldturnafavourableeartotheclaifiiwhichhemade incommitteeandwhichwasrejected fortheabolitionoftheurbanlimitation,andthattheywouldacceptthe veryamendmentwhichhisfriends movedandwhichwasrejectedincommittee,namely-tomakethelimitationthree-fourthsinsteadoffourfifths.ThoseconcessionswereofenormousimportancetoRomanCatholics. Theywouldextendtheoperationof clause4topracticallyalltheir schools,butnotabsolutelyalltheir theirschools,becausetheydidnot wanttodoanythinginthisBill whichwouldperpetuatetheNonconformistgrievanceintheoneschool areas.(Ministerialcheers.)That theywerewillingabsolutelytogive up.Frominquiryhefoundthatit willmeanaconsiderablenumberof schools-aboutthirty,buttheywere willingthatthesacrificeshouldbe madeinorderthattheymightshow totheEnglishpeoplethattheydid notdesiretoberesponsibleinanydegreeforthemaintenanceofoneschool wee,grievanceofNonconformists.But whywerenotthoseconcessionsmade tothemincommittee? Hewassure theyweremadesincerelynow,buthe hopedthattheopportunityofacompromiseonthoselivesmight'notbe defeatedbytheprocedurethathad beenadoptedforto-morrow. Mons.igneurdeBresillac'sSociety fortheevangelisationofAfricahad thenonlyrecentlycomeintoexistence atLyonsandthefivemissionaries constitutedthefirstbandofApostolic pioneerswhichthenewly-foundedOrderhadequippedandsentforth'to carrytheblessingsofreligioninto theheartsandhomesofthepagannegroesoftheGuineaCoast.The chivalrousdaringofanexpedition bravingallthedangersofthedeadliestclimateonearth,aswellasthe fiercehostilityofapaganpriesthood, arousedthekeenestsympathyandthe highesthopesofsuccessinthehearts ofmanyfriendsinRomeand throughout France; butthose hopesweredoomedtosudden anddisastrousdisappointment.Within sixweeksfrom.the.dateofhisarrival inAfricathezealous.andintrepidBishopandhisfourcompanionshadfallenvictimstothemurderousclimate ofSierraLeone,Thelaybrother livedonlythreeweeksfromthedate. ofhislanding,theBishopsixweeks, andthethreepriestssixweeks.five months,andfourmonthsrespectively. Apatheticincidentmarkedthelast momentsofthedyingprelate. He receivedExtremeUnctionatthehands ofanothetdyingman-thelastsurtivorofhispriests,who,inafew hoursafterwardsfollowedhisBishop intoeternity.Bothwereinterred. necessarily,withoutpriestorburial service. Alongintervalelapsedbeforethe newsleachedLyons,whereallthat remainedoftheAfricanMissionSotoAustralia.Inthecourseofa conversationwithhimontheeveof mydeparturetheveteranmissionary interestinglyrecalledformyinformationsomeofhisreminiscencesrespectingthedeathofBishopdeBresieac, whosefriendandcollaboratorhehad been. "Whenthenewsreached Lyons,"hesaid,"thatourFounder andhislittlebandhadgonetheway ofallpreviouspioneersoftheGospel inWestAfrica-hadbeenruthlessly sweptawaybytheclimate-theevangelisationoftheblackmanofthe GuineaCoastseemed,eventoour mostardentsupporters,absolutely andutterlyhowless.(Sardine!de BonaldwasthenArchbishop 01 Lyons.andhisEminencestrongly counselledmetoabandontheproject anddisbandmyseminary.Bishopde Bresillachad,however,athisdepartureenjoinedme,intheeventofhis death,toperseverewiththeworkas Fongasashadowofhoperemained. Priortothehappeningroftheevents whichhavejustbeenrelatedtherewas notasingleCatholicMissioninexistenceinthoseregionsofWestAfrica whichnowconstitutethemissionfield oftheAfricanMissionSociety.The estimatedpopulationwasfortymillions-allfetish-warshiapersorNfiahometans.TheLowerGuineanativeswereonlyknowntothecivilisedworldfortheirhumansacrifices, fortheirinnumerableandgrotesque formsofidol-worship,andfortheir slave-trade.Theircountrywarechieflynotoriousforaclimate,which,althoughtolerable.tothemselves,was most.deadlytothewhiteman.It wasdeservedlynamedTheWhite Man'sGrave. Noearthlyconsiderationcouldinduceanysanemember of..thewhiteraceeventothinkofsettlingthere.Theclimateforbadehim underpainofdeath.Eventhepassim;oceansteamerskeptatadistance fromthemalaria-ladenandpoisonous atmospherewhichhungaboveits dreadedcoast-line.
the.VicariateoftheGoldCoast,the VicariateofBenin,thePrefectureof theUpperNigerandthePrefectureof theivoryCoast.Thesedistricts count30,000Catholics,3Bishops3 prefectsapostolicholdingquasi-opiseopaljurisdiction,190priests,90religieuses,40stationswithresidentmissionaries,andofwhich4havenegro congregationsofmorethantwothousaidrespectively,80minorstallions whichareregularlyattended,53collegesandschools,47orphanagesand dispensaries,2leperhouses,andother minorinstitutions.Itwillbealready understoodthatthesebishops,priests andsistersareallmenibersofthe AfricanMissionSociety,andthatthe missionsofwhichtheyareincharge havebeenestablishedbythemselves andbytheirpredecessorsofthesame Society.Thesemissionshavebeen foundedatacostoflifeandsuffering whichisalmostincredible,andinthe faceofthemostformidabledifficultiesthateverconfrontedthepreachingoftheGospelin,anypartofthe world.Whatthosedifficultieshave beenitwillbescarcelynecessaryto say.Therewasthemostdeadlyclimateonearthtobecontendedwith' therewasapagan,savagehostilepeopletobeapproachedandconciliated therewerenecessariesoflifeandlabourtobeprocuredandallthiswas tobeaccomplishedatdistancesof thousandsofmilesfromtheordinary sourcesofChristianeid.Itwillnot, therefore,besurprisingtolearn,nor isitanyexaggerationoffactstosay, thattheCatholicmissionswhichexist alongtheGuineaCoateto-dayhave grownabovethegravesofthenevokd priestsandnunswhogavetheirlabors andtheirlivestofoundthem.The followingfactsandfigureswillserve tosh'owthestrictaccuracyofthis generalstatement.Thedeath-rollof theSocietycountsupwardsof400 priestsandsisters.victimstothe feversofWestAfricaandtotheirown charityandzeal.Firstonthatsacredrollofhonouristhenameofthe VeneratedFounder.BishopdeMarion Bresillac.whosedeathhasalready beenrelated.Fromthedateofthat eventdowntothepresentdaythe

'Ibisvenerableandillustriousecclesiastic,formanyyearsthemostprominentfigureintheforeignmissionarymovementinFrance,hasgovernedthesocietywithremantableabilityandsuccessforthepastfortysixyears,andthereiseveryindicationthathewillcontinuetodosofor severalyearstocome. Duringthe longtermofhisadministrationhehas seenbranchesofhisseminaryextend themselves,underhisdirectingnand. intoIreland,Holland,Spain,andseveralpartsofFrance.AstheSocietyconfinesitsmissionaryefforts entirelytoAfrica,itsbranchesin Europehavebeenestablishedsolely forthepurposeofsupplyingitsmissionsinEgyptandinGuineawith priests.
Theseminariescontainatpresent upwardsofthreehundredstudentsand novices,eacharideveryoneofwhom realisesthatWestAfrica,whileit,invites,himtobringtheblessingsofreligiontoitspaganshores,atthe sametimeholdsouttohimtheprospectofamartyr'sdeathandanearly grave.Realisingthisandsustained bythedivinepromisethat"hewho loseshislifeforMtshallfindit,"the AfricanMissionstudentknowsthat hispreparationforthepriesthood meansapreparationfordeath,and thatthecommandofhissuperiorsto embarkforWestAfricapractically meanshisdeath-sentence.
IntheBritishIslandstheSociety possesstwofoundations-theAfrican MissionCollege,atWilton,Cork,and theAfricanMissionConventatBlackrock,Cork.TheCollegecontains forty-sevenIrishstudents.Bathinstitutionshavealreadysentforth'a largenumberofIrishpriestsand sisters,whohavecarriedtheFaithof theirFathersintothebamboohuts ofthenegro,andintothemud-wall cabinsoftheEgyptianFellaheen.The archivesofthoseIrish'branchesofthe AfricanMissionSocietycontainlong listsoftheiralumni,whohavegiven theirlivesforthepropagationofthe Faith,ontheGuineaCoast.Thefollowingitemsfromthosenecrological recordsareworthyofthegoldenage ofIreland'shistory,whenhermissionariesweretobefoundamongthe pagansofeverynationinEuropefrom, thesnowywastesofIcelandtothe banksoftheDanube.

Therev.gentlemanduringthecourse ofacomprehensivespeech.wentover indetailthewholeperiodofhisconnectionwiththeCatholicpeopleof MidlandJunction.Inthe'courseof hisremarksFatherReidysaid"The present,occasionremindedhintofanothersadeventinhislife,andthat waswhenasayoungpriest,fresh frontthehallowedwallsofhiscollege hesaidgood-bye,perhapsforeverto allthatlifeholdsdear-fatherand mother,urothersandsisters,kind friends,andlastbutnotleast,the ruggedhills,verdantslopes,andsilverylakesandrillsofhisnativeKUlaorneyIlethenfeltthatthisworld hadlostallfurtherattractionfor hint.Therewasbutonebrightspot left,andthatwasthathewasgoing tostrangelandtoworkfor,and perhapstodie,intheserviceofHis DivineMaster.However.hewasbut ashorttimeinthecountryorhis adoption,untiltheCatholicpeopleof MidlandJunctioninsensiblyalmost wontheirwayintohisheartandhis affections,somuchsothathenow feltonleavingthemasiftheold woundswereagainre-opened.Heassuredthosepresentthatwhatever changesthefutureshouldbringhint, hewouldalwayskeepacornerinhis heartforthem.andthatheshould everlookbacktotheperiodofhis associationwiththemasoneorthe brightspotsofhislife.Therev. gentlemanwentontothankthose presentforthemanykindnessesshown tohintduringthetimehewasministeringamongstthem,antialsoforthe noblewayinwhichtheyforgavethe manyshortcomingsandfailingsnaturaltoayoungpriest'.
InspeakingofFatherMorris,the pastorofthedistrict,FatherReidy saidthatheshouldalwaysreelunder adebt.ofgratitudetohimforhis greatkindnesstohim.and'forthe fotthearancewhichFatherMorrisever showedtowardShisyouthfulendeavours. HesaidFatherMorrishail beentohimduringhisstayintheparishaspiritualdirectorofthehighesttype,asagecouncillor.afather, andafriend.Ilespokeofthegreat thingsFatherMorrishoddoneforthe peopleofGuildfordandMidland,and ofhisseriousillnesswhichwastoa largeextentbroughtaboutbyhis energeticlaboursintheirfavour, andthemanyworriesattendant on thoselab-ours.
Inconclusion,FatherReidysaid thatalthoughhewasverysorryon leavingthem,stillhehadonerayof consolation.andthatwas.thatsince hewasnolongerabletowork amongstthemhimselfowingtofailing health,theywerehavingashissuccessor,ayoungmanfullofhealth andvisour,freshfromtheanvil,so tospeak.andburningwithzealto assistFatherMorrisincarryingon the'goodworkaniontestthem.Father Reidysatdownamidstunboundedapplause.followedbyanominous at-

Thecrownwasmadeby Panzie.theGenevesejeweller,andwas firstusedbyCatherinetheGreat.
