OnSunday,November25th,theannualcelebrationincommemoration oftheManchestersacrificewashonouredinDublinbythecustomary publicprocessiontoGlasnevin,where acenotaphhasbeenerectedtoperpetuatethememoryoftheMartyred Three.ThedemonstrationwasorganisedbytheOldGuandUnion,and boreeloquenttestimonytotheadmirationinwhichtheheroismofthose threehumbleIrishmenisstillheld byourcountrymen,thoughalmost fourdecadeshavepassedawaysince Allen,Larkin,andO'Brienweresacrificedtotheimplacablehatredoftheir foes.andtheabidingplacetheirprinciplesholdintheheartsofourpeople.

HOWCATHOLICSARETREATED INBELFAST.

Representatives of Protestant thoughtandopinionfromtheNorth seldomtireofdilatingonthevirtues oftoleration.Theypaintinlurid colourstheallegedintoleranceofCatholics,andproclaimloudlythe'generousspiritwhichanimatesProtestantstowardsthosewhodifferfrom theminreligion:ThefollowingstatisticsquotedbyMr.JohnGore,solicitor;inthecourseofalecturedeliveredintheBoys'BrigadeHall, - Falls-road,Belfast,throwsafloodof lightonthequestion. Theaverage amountpaidyearlyinsalariesbythe BelfastCorporationis£77,000,out ofwhichCatholicsget£3,600.The BelfastPoor-LawGuardiansspend £10,865yearlyinsalaries,ofwhich Catholicsget£170.TheBelfast HarbourCommissionerspay£210to Catholicsoutof£7,908,whichthey spendyearlywhiletheBelfastWater Commissionets,toshowthespiritof religioustolerationwithwhichthey areimbued,actuallypay£150yearly toCatholicemployesoutof£3,524 whichtheyexpend.

THECHRISTIANBROTHERS.AND SECONDARY'EDUCATION.

Somevaluableevidenceregardingthe excellentworkoftheChristianBrothersintheregionofsecondaryeducationhasbeengivenatthemeetings oftheCommitteeofinquiryintothe ConditionofTechnicalInstruction. Rev.BrotherHennessysaideverysecondaryschoolinIrelandwasnow providedwithasciencelaboratory, andmostboysmuststudyscienceas anessentialpartoftheircourse.The secondaryschoolsoftheChristian Brotherswerealsoeouinnedwith workshopsinwhirl'manualinstructionwaselventotheboys.Mr. Fletcher.ahighofficialoftheAgriculturalandTechnicalDepartment.in

theyhad nothadtheChristianBrothers' schoolstheywouldbeinaverydifficultposition,fortheywouldhaveno schoolsinIrelandtoprovidesecondaryeducationforthegreatmosses ofthepeople.

ThefirstpartoftheMooreMemorial movementhasbeentriumphantlyaccomplished. OnSent-dayNovember24th,thestatelyCelticcross whichhasbeenerectedatthegraveof theIrishNationalPoetinthepic- turesquechurchyardatBromham,in Wiltshire,wasunveiled,inthepresenceofanotableandrepresentative gath'eringofIrishandEnglishadmirers.Thememorialwasworthyof thepoet,whowas,asMr.Dillondeclaredinhiseloquentspeech,steeped tohislipsinthetraditionalloreof thelandheloved.TheIrishLiterarySocietiesofEnglandandofIreland,theRoyalIrishAcademy,of whichMoorewasamember,andto whichhislibrarywasbeetteathed,and theIrishNationalistPartywereall representedathisgravesideonthis historicaloccasion.Thepartyof sixtywhichwentdownfromLondon wasaccompaniedbyMr.Rogers,the memberforDevizes,whichforalmost thefirsttimeinitshistoryreturned aLiberalatthelastgeneralelection. ThepartyonitsarrivalatDevizes wasreceivedbyMr.Simpson,the Mayoroftheancienttown.andtrove tothecharmingvillageofBromham, whereTomMoorelivedthelastpart ofhislife,wheresomeofhis.nost exquisitepoemswerewritten,and wherehisashesrestundertheshadow oftheancientchurch,whosequaint anddelicatetraceryofoldgreystone harmonisessofitlywiththegreat Celticcrossthatnowtowerssoimposinglybyitsside.

Hewasalsoamostexquisitewriter ofprose,andIhaveoftenmaintained thatifMoorehadneverwrittena lineofpoetryhewouldheldavery highpositionamongwritersofEnglishprose.Hewasamanwhohas oftenbeencriticisedfrommanypoints ofview.Idonotintendtosayanythingofhislifeheretoday;butIwill alludetoone.incidentinhislifewhich hasalwaysappearedtometobea singulartestimonytothecharacterof Moore.andthatwashisfast friendshipwithByron.IamoldfashionedenoughtbbestillanenthusiasticadmirerofLordByron.It hasbeensaidthatthe-worksofMoore havedepreciatedinthesemoderndays. Thathashappenedanddoeshappen tothegreatestofliteraryartists, Haveweforgottenthatfornearly ahundredyearsShakespeare'sworks werehardlyreadbyasingleindividual.Therealwayscomesthereacctionwhenagreatmandies,and manypeopleinEnglandto-daythink itfashionabletosneeratMooreand Byron. IhavealwaysbeenanadmirerofByron,becausehewasa greatpoetandagreatfriendofhumanliberty;andLordByron,who wasnotaneasymantoplease.loved andtrustedThomasMooreperhaps morethananyother'friendhehadon earth.Ihaveoftenthought,when thinkingofthevarietyofMoore's literarywork.oftwoorthreeexhirisitelinesofawell-knownpoet-

Thesewordshadreferenceto Moore'sfamousEasternpoem,"The FiveWorshippers,"wherehedescribes theheroicthoughhopelessbattleof thefiveworshippersagainsttheonset ofMoslems.whocandoubtthatthe poetwasthin',:inginhisheartofthe struggleforlibertyinhisownnation.Moredidagreatvarietyof workfir.hiscountry.andforthe causeAlliterature,anditisamost strikingtestimonyofthatgreatinfluencewhichgeniushastodrawtogetherpeoplewhoarehostile:and aroundhisgravehereto-day,50 yearsandmoresincehedied,there shouldbegatheredtogetherthecrowd ofEnglishpeopletowelcomeusfrom Ireland,andwemayall.Ithink,concludeourproceedingsherebyindulgingheartilyinthehopethatitmay beagoodomenforthefuture,and thatthewishwhichMoorehadoften feltmayyetberealised,andthose twonations.solongandbitterlyhostileandestranged.mayvetlearnto understandeachotherandbefriends (loudcheers).

Mr.Dillon,M.P.,oncomingforward,wasreceivedwithloudcheers. Hesaid-Ihavecomeherewithsome ofmycolleaguesoftheIrishPartyto joininofferingthetestimonyorcur homageatthegraveofourgreat countryman.Ithinkthisisamost remarkablegathering. IthasalwaysbeentheDivineprivilegeof geniustodrawtogetherallnationalities,tooutstep,asitwere,thebarriersofnationalities,andwe.coming hereto-daytothisbeautifulvillage inafarpartofEisgtand,cannotbut bedeeplymovedbythekindlywelcome wehavereceived.andbytheMalkS ofsympathywhichhavebeen,hown toourcountryandournationa greattestimonytothatDivinepower whichresidesinhumangenius.Lord Fitzmauricehasdrawnyourattentiontothebeautifulchadoeterof thismonument,andIthinkhehas beenstrictlyaccuratewhenhespoke ofitasanornamenttothisold churchyard.Itispeculiarlysuitedto standhereasamonumenttothe greatIrishpoetwhowassteepedto thelipswiththetradit'onsandancientmemoriesofhiscountry,because thisformofcrossispeculiartoIrelaud.andisinextricablyboundupand associatedwithallthemostglorious traditionsofourpeople. Thestagewas beautifullydecoratedbyIllbssrs.BrennanBros.Theeffectwasunproved byabrilliantdisplayofvariegated lights.Thiswasespeciallynoticeableinthecourtdance,whenthe stagelookedacloudoffloatingdra' pery.BeforethecloseoftheentertainmentCanonRobinsonpresented medalstosixchildrenwhohadpassed theAdelaideprimaryandjuniorexaminations.BrotherDugganspokeon theremarkablesuccessofourCatholic schoolsinthepublicexaminations throughouttheCommonwealth.It wasevidentfromhisremarksthat hisheartisstillinNudgee.Financiallytheentertainmentprovedthe mostsatisfactoryeverheldbythe schoolchildrem.Thisresultisdue inagreatnieasuretotheeffortsof Mrs.Mechamingettingatleasta half-hundredadvertisementsforthe programme.OwingtoseriousindispositionShewasunabletoattendthe entertainment.Butherfriendswill bepleasedtoknowsheisrapidlyconvalescing.

Amostsuccessfulconcertwasgiven bythepupilsofSt.Brigid'sSchool intheBrownHillInstitute,onWednesdayevening,Dec.19.Anexcellent programmewascarriedoutinamost praiseworthymanner,andSeveral itemsweresplendidlyrenderedandre' ceivedwell-meritedapplause.The wholeperformancereflectstheutmost credit.bothonthechildrenandtheir teachers(SistersMarthaandCatherine),andtheyaretobehighlycongratulatedonthetrainingtheyhave giventhechildren.CanonRobinson andRev.FatherGilroy(Boulder) werepresentduringtheevening,and theCanoninhisusualhappymanner thankedtheSisters,childrenand parents. TheMiningIndustry.

EveryoneinthisStateoccupiedin theminingindustry,orwhotakesan interestinthegeneraldevelopment andprogressofthecountry,mustrealisetheimportanceofthewelfareof ourminesasafactorinthe'general prosperityofWesternAustralia,and thenecessitythatexistsforencouragingthatindustryineverylegitimate way.Withsuchanareaofauriferous countryasistobefoundinthis State,nothingseemsmoreunlikely thanthatthereareawaitingtheenterprisingprospectornomorerichdiscoveries.
