Hehadissuedanotherpeace pleaonlythreedaysearlier whenhereceivedmembers ofdelegationsfrom67nationstoceremoniesmarking his80thbirthdayandcoronationanniversary.The Popetoldthecommission thathehadvoicedhis thoughtsaboutdangersto peaceinhisstillearlier peaceappealofSeptember 10. ¶1HE"FreedomFromHunger"campaign ALwaslaunchedinPerthlastweekbythe Government.Itdeservesthebackingofall sectionsofthecommunity,notonlyinideas andtalkbutinaction.
TnepreludetothePerthmeetingbeganwiththe formationoftheFoodandAgricultureOrganisationof theUnitedNationsafterthelastWorldWar.Lastyear theF.A.O.launcheditsworld-widecampaignproper. andhasforitsaimthesupplyingofremediestohunger andwantandtopromotepracticalstepstoincreasethe productionoffood.
Manyhaveusedthetermthattwo-thirdsoftheworld populationisstarvingorthatinafewyears'timethe worldwillnothaveenougharablelandtofeedthefastdevelopingpopulation.Thesetermsoriginatedinan earlyreportgivenoutbytheF.A.O.
Soonaftertheirpublication,twothingshappened. Onewasthatmanyeminentpeople,intheirownfield. sentapetitiontotheUnitedNationsthattheytake stepsto"leadinestablishingandimplementingapolicy designedtolimitpopulationgrowththeworldover." TheappealersincludesuchpeopleasMrs.Roosevelt, DeanAcheson,JulianHuxley,BertrandRusselland otherswhohaveafairfollowing.Thisdevelopedinto theterror-urgingofthelimitationofthepopulation -explosion,'whichwasthesubjectoftheleading articlelastweek.
Thesecondthingofimportancefollowingthisreport wasthatthereportwasproventobewronginits figuring.Thisfactwasmadeknown,butlikeall correctionsdidnotreceiveaswideorassensational pablicityastheoriginalstatement.
Nobodydeniesthatthereishungerintheworld.Too manypeoplehaveseenit.Butitisnotthehuge, insolubleproblemthathasbeenmadeofthesubjectsomuchdiscussionwhileleavingthebasicproblem unsolved.
Tenyearsagothiserrorwaspredominantandithas diedonlyveryslowlyin"informedminds."Almost everyscientificspeakerTinthesubjectnowagreesthat immenseincreasesinagriculturalproduction,indevelopedandunder-developedcountriesalike,arepossible.Theycanalsobeeffectedveryquickly,ASSOON ASWEMAKEANYSERIOUSEFFORTTODOSO.
Malnutrition,diseasecausedbythis,lackofproper dietandbalance,arethingswhichmustbetackledand wehavetheknow-howandthemeanstodoit.
Quantitiesoffoodofbasickindswillhavetobesent tocertainareas.Thiswillbenecessarytoalleviate immediatelackofproductionintheseareas.Themain concernwillbethatthefoodreachesthepeoplewho needitandnotmadetheprofiteeringavenueofunscrupulousprivateindividualsorgovernments.
Vastnewareasmustbeopenedupfortheproduction offoodandthisagainhasbeenprovedpossible.The peopleofpresentlow-productionareasmustbetaught howtoproducemore.Theseahasbeenprovedtobea hugetreasurehouseoffoodandcombinedwiththe landcouldfeedfarmorethantentimesourpresent number.OneAustralianeconomisthasstatedthat"if allthefarmersoftheworldproducedfoodattherateof aDutchfarmer,therewouldbefoodenoughfora populationof300.000,000,000."Thiswouldbeone hundredtimesthepresentworldpopulation.Professor ColinClarke,anOxfordeconomist,hasstatedthatthere arestilluninhabited"greatareasofgoodcultivatable landinAsiaandevenWesternChina,onwhich AmericanorAustralianfarmerswouldhavenodifficultyinmakingagoodliving."
Wastemustbestopped.Therecordofsomecountries inthisregardcouldbetermednothingshortofscandalous.Australiaitselfcouldbeinthiscategory.Inone yearwedumpedoveramilliontonsofsugar.America willhavetostoppayingfarmersnottocultivate millionsofacres.

parentshavegivenampleevidenceofthe schoolstheywantfortheirchildren.The wantintegratereligionwithmoregeneral of Catholicparentscontributetheirproportionof thefundsavailableforeducation.Theycontend thatashareinthisexpenditureisarightina communitythatclaims(a)toofferafreeeducation toitscitizensand(b)torespectthejustdemands ofminorities.
Itisurgentbroadlyforthreereasons-
Tomaintainandstafftheschools nowexisting.
Topermitdevelopmentprogressively withthedemand-hencetoprovide newschools,newclassrooms,laboratories,libraries, Torespondtotheincreasinglyinsistentdemandforohigherquality performancefromallschools.
Inthelastdecade.wehavebeendilutingaslowlyincreasingteacherforceoveradramaticallyin- creasinglyschoolpopulation.Thishasledtoa situation,thecentralfactorofwhichisfinancial,in whichtherewillhavetoberestrictionofentry,or asharpfallinstandards.
IfeveryCatholicadultwereseizedwiththe seriousnessofthisposition.atremendouspressure onpublicandpoliticalopinioncouldbeexerted. Why,shouldweasacommunity,after65yearsof sacrifice,ofhelpingotherpeopletobearTHEIR burdens,befacedwitheducationaldeterioration? Whyhasvirtuallynooneinpubliclifehadthe equityandcouragetograpplewiththisshabby discrimination?
Weneedthefollowingthings,osmuch asanysectionofthecommunitySchools,classrooms,libraries,laboratories.
Teacherstoreduceclass-loads,and permitdueexpansion.
Teacherstoreleaseageingteachers onwhomwecriticallydepend.
Fundstoremunerateadequatelylay teachers.
Adequatebasictrainingforall teachers,andhighertrainingfor someteachers.Highersecondary teachersneedhonoursandsometimespost-graduatedegrees.
Appropriateancillaryservicesin testingandguidance, Weneedthesethingsespeciallyatatimewhen educationalpracticeisbeingincreasinglyelabo- rated-andatimewhenitisinthenationalinterest tonurtureanddeveloptheabilitiesofabler children.
Maywerepeat.Thecoreofthisproblemis financial.Givenappropriatefunds,ourschools coulddevelopproportionatelywiththeCatholic population.Theycouldalsodevelopqualitatively withdemandsmadeonthem.But,deniedthese funds,developmentbothinthewidthoftheircover andthequalityoftheirworkwillcease.
Oneaspectisparticularlyserious.Ascostshave risen,theopportunitiesofCatholiceducationto relativelyindigentchildrenhassharplydecreased. Wewanttorestorethesituationinwhichabasic Catholiceducationwouldbeavailabletochildren, irrespectiveoftheirfinancialcondition.
Fromthistherearetwoconclusions.Thefirstis thatthoseparentsofchildreninCatholicschools whoarenotpullingtheirfinancialweightshould realisetheirobligations.Thisdoesnotrefertothe genuinelypoor,buttosomeparentswhoput luxuriesbeforetheirjustobligationstothereligiouswhostafftheschoolstheirchildrenuse.. Theyareaminority,buttheyseriouslyweaken analreadystrugglingsystemofschools.
Thesecondconclusionisthis-thateveryCatholiccitizenshouldstrivetoinfluenceindividuals, groupsandpoliticalleaderstowardsendingdiscriminationagainstafifthofAustralianchildren. Thequalityofdemocracyismeasuredbyitsattitude tominorities.ItistimetherecordofAustralian democracyisclearedofitsfinancialpenalisingofa substantialgroup,i.e.Catholicparents,intheir desireforaneducationsuitabletotheirreligious needs.

Weknowotherpeoplebetterthanwedoourselves. SomeoneonceaskedSocrateswhyhewassuchan unhappymandespitethefactthathetravelledover theworld.Socratessaid:"Becausewhereveryougo, youtakeyourselfwithyou."TheancientGreek philosopherThalessaidthatformantoknowhimself isthehardesttingintheworld.
Themodernmindiscompletelysurroundedby mechanismsforself-deceptionandforavoidingall knowledgeofself.Amoodisconstantlybeingcreated thatwearenotpersonallyresponsiblefortheevilthat wedo.(Itshouldbestatedthatthoughmanyclaim theyaredeterminedtobeevil,neverthelesstheyinsist thattheyshouldbepraisedforthegoodtheyfreelydo.) Anothertricktoavoidself-knowledgeisexaggerated self-disgust.Thevictimthusaffirmshopelessness,and avoidsthenecessityofchange.Hesays:"Iamrotten," justlikehemightsay,"Iamtoofat."Thenhefreely reachesforanotherchocolate.Sometimesonehearsit said:"Iamanoldsinner.-(Theyarealways"old.") Insuchafalsejudgment,onecombinesanaffirmation ofhowsensitiveishisconscience,withtheopposite affirmationthatnothingcanbedoneforhisbetterment.
HidingOne'sREALSelfFromOthers
Theaveragepersonisverymuchlikeanonion;heis madeupofmanycoatsordisguises.Sincetearingthem offbringstears,heavoidsstrippingdowntohisrealself. Many,too,arelikeicebergs-one-fifthoftheircharacter isabovewater,four-fifthsishiddenandunexplored. Othersarelikedepartmentstoresinwhichthewrong pricetagshavebeenplacedonmanythings-hairpins sellfor£1,000,diamondsforapenny.Consciencethey regardlikebillsatthefirstofthemonth-theyare afraidtoopenthembecausetheyarebearersofbad news.Manyamodernconscienceislikeawomen beforehermirror.Justassoonassheseesherself, sheputsonhermake-up.Themaskismadefor others;theseemingselfshowsitself.whilethereal selfishidden.

AtAndover,inHampshire,England,REDRICE SCHOOLopenedforthe firsttimelastSeptember.
Thisisthefirst,andindeed theonly,schoolforolder boysoftheCatholicFaithto bedirectedbylaymen-it hasjointheadmasters,Mr. RichardArnold-Jonesand Mr.AdrianStokes-andis staffedentirelybylay masters,thoughthereis,of couse,aresidentchaplain, FatherPatrickBushellof theLondonOratory(foundedbyCardinalNewman).

Despitethefactthatgovernmentrepresentativesat theconferenceswhichledto theChurch-Stateagreement ofDecember8,1956,assured theChurchofitsrighttouse mimeographmachines,the governmentonAugust4, 1958"corrected"thistobar theChurchfrommimeographingmaterialforinformationpurposes.Thedecree wasretroactive,andthe governmentproceededto takecourtactionagainst priestsandSistersofthe diocesanchanceriesofWarsaw,GorzowandCracow whohadusedduplicating machinespriortotheedict. WHENacoupleentermarriage,theybecomeprofessionalpeople.Itispresumedthatwhenamanslipsa weddingringonagirl'sfinger PROFESSIONALandthebridesays,"Ido,"that DUTIES both,byacceptingthehonour giventothespousesandtherewardsandpleasureswhichbelong totheirstatewillalsoaccepttheprofessionalduties involved.
Sincemarriageisforthebegettingandeducationof children,marriedcoupleshavemadeaprofessionof havingandrearingtheirfamilies.Theymust,therefore,acceptallthereasonablerisksanddifficulties involved,aswellasacceptingtherewardsprovided.
Awifeisexpectedtoaccepttheburdensofpregnancy,thelabour(worthwhilehardwork)ofchildbirth,andthecareandcorrectionofherchildren.A husbandandfatherisexpectedtoaccepttheresponsibilitiesofprcvidingforhiswifeandchildren,totake thelead,ineducatingandcorrectingthem,andallthe worriesandinsecuritiesthatcomewithresponsible fatherhood.Theymaynomorerefusetofacethe reasonablerisksofchildbearingandchildcarethan mayapolicemanrefusetofacethereasonablerisksof lawenforcement.

INSUCHacasewhataretheytodo?Continence, whetherabsoluteorperiodic,istheironlyChristian answer.Ourmodernpagansthinkthis CHRISTIANimpossible,butsuchanopinioniscertainlyaninsulttothecelibateclergy, ANSWERourdevotednunsandtomillionsof dedicatedsinglepeopleintheworld,as wellastothesacrificinghusbandsandwiveswholive continentlyfromtimetotimeintheirmarriage. Nodoctorhesitatestodemandcontinencefroma coupleforamonthbeforeandamonthafterthebirth ofachild.Heexpectstdbeobeyed,andfearofsome harmusuallymakesthecouplereadytotakehisadvice onfacevalue.Whyshouldnotthefearandloveof Godandthesacrificialloveforeachothermakecontinencepossiblewhenitislegitimatelynotdesirableto haveachildeitherpermanentlyortemporarily?
Continenceinmarriageisnotsomethinglightlytobe adoptedattheWHIMofeitherpartner.Sincemarriage isacontract,it'DEMANDSAGREEMENTonthepart ofhudlandandwife.Again,part-timecontinence cannotbeadoptedwhenthereisseriousdangerof part-timesintoeitherorboth.Lastly,continence, whetherabsoluteorperiodic,willneverworkeffectivelynorwillitbewithoutsinifitisadoptedmerely toavoidthedutiesofone'sstate.
Though"love,andmarriagegotogetherlikeahorse andcarriage,"marriageandfamilyaremoreintimatelyconnectedeventhanloveandmarriage.To deliberatelyrejectafamilywithoutaweightyreasonis ultimatelytorejectmarriageandloveitself.The painterwhorefusestopaintafterexperienceofthe beautifulmaysoonexpectthebeautifultopasshimby. ThesplendouroftheceremonyatwhichFatherInnocentofBerzo,O.F.M.Cap., isbeingbeatifiedisin sharpcontrastwiththeausterityandselflessnessof hislife.
FatherInnocentwasborn intheAlpinevillageof NiardoinnorthernItalyon March19,1844.Hisparents, PietroandFrancescaScalvinoni,hadhimbaptized Giovannithreedaysafter hisbirth.
Hisparentswereverypoor, devoutCatholics.Hisfather andmotherrecitedtheRosarytogethereverynightbeforgoingtobed.Tragedy struckthefamilythree monthsafterthechild's birth,whenhisfatherdied.
Evenasaveryyoung childGiovannishowedexceptionalpiety.Hischaritableinstincts,forwhichhe becamefamouslater,were markedinhisearliestyears whenhedeprivedhimself togivefoodtothosepoorer thanhimself.

HeptttontheCapuchin habitonApril16,1874,assumedthenameofFather Innocentandbeganhisnovitiate.Ayearlaterhemade hisprofessionintheCapuchins.In1876hewasmade assistantmasterofnovices attheMonasteryofthe Annunciationandremained therefor10years.
In1886hewassentto Milantohelpthetheologicalmagazine,AnnaliFrancescani.LaterhewasreturnedtotheAnnunciatianmonasterywherehecontinued toimpresseveryonewith hisintenseprayer,profound humilityandrigorousdiscipline.
Eventhoughhewasonly inhis40s,FatherInnocent begantoshowtheeffectsof hismortificationswhichincludedflagellationandthe wearingofbeltswithnails imbeddedinthem.Hisbody wasreducedtoalmosta skeletonandhelookedlike anagedman.
Inthehopethatachange ofclimatewouldbenefithim hissuperiorstransferred FatherInnocenttoBergamo wherehecouldalsohave bettercare.However,the changecametoolateand hepreparedhimselffor death.
Onlytheexpressordersof hissuperiorsprevented
terysevenmonthslater. Regularprocessesforbeatificationwerebegunshortly afterhisdeathandhiscause wasintroducedinRomeon January22,1919.
Themedicalcommissionof theSacredCongregationof Ritesapprovedtwomiracles workedthroughFatherInnocent'sintercessiononJanuary31,1958.Thefirstof theseoccurredonJanuary 25,1951,whenseven-yearoldAntonioGiuliciofBergamowascuredofanocclusion ofaperforatedintestineand septicperitonitis.Thesecond tookplaceatBresciain 1.956,whenfour-year-old LorenzoBellottiwascured ofamalignantlymphcancer.

Certainly,themajorcharactersin"Figaro"areso completethattheirappearanceonthestageseemsonly anepisodeintheirlivesand wecaneasilypredicttheir futurebehaviourafterthe fallofthefinalcurtain.
Anotherunusualquality about"Figaro"isitsrational plot,farremovedfromthe fairytalesorcrudemelodramasofmostotheroperas. Itis,infact,notnecessaryto
leaveone'sbrainbehindwith one'shatattheoperahouse cloakroomwhengoingtoa performanceof"Figaro."
Unlike"DonGiavanni," whichstillawaitstheideal gramophone performance, "Figaro"hashadseveralfine recordings.Thefinestofall isthe1955Deccaissue,conductedbythelateErichKleiber.Boththisandthe sparkling1952HMVissue (Glyndbourne,conductorVittoreGui)wereonlyavailable inmonolocally,although bothhavebeenissuedin stereoformoverseasandare presumablystillavailableon indent.
ThisColumbiasetisthereforethefirststereo"Figaro" toappearhere.Ithasmany merits,notleastthePhilharmoniaunderGiulini,which playsimpeccablythroughout.
Therecordingthrowsthe woodwindornamentationinto brilliantrelief;italsoreveals thepositionofthesingers veryvividlyand,forexample, permitstheasidesofthe CountessandSusannainthe ActIIfinaletobeveryeffective.Inthis,itissuperior totheKleiberset,ofwhich have stereoversion.
TheKleiberwasveryearly stereo,recordedontapesbeforestereodiscshadbeen invented,andthereforehad noneofthebrilliantstereo effectsofthelasttwoyears. Thesound,however,istrue high-fidelity. havenot heardtl)eGuistereoversion butthismusthavebeen,in 1952,almostthefirststereo recordingmade.

Insuch longperformance,however,theremustbe flaws.It,istothesingers' creditthattheseflawsare almostallfaultsofinterpretationratherthanofexecution.
ItistruethatTaddei,as Figaro,wasaheatbehindthe orchestraontwooccasions andthatAnnaMoffo,asSusanna,addedgracenotehere andtherewhichwasn'tinthe scorebutthelatter,atleast, ispermissible.Itisrather thecharacterofSusanna whereMoffofails,forshe soundspertandsomething ofavixen.Shefairlyspits "Comelamanmipizzica" atFigaroinActIVwhenhe pretendstomakeloveto herinherassumedroleof theCountess.
HildeGuedenintheKleibersetgaveusaSusanna asbrightandalertbutatthe sametimewarmlyhuman andoneofthemostlovable charactersontheoperatic stage.Mostrevealingwas thesingingof"Venite,inginocchiatevi,"anactionaria whereSusannaisdressing Cherubinoasagirl.Moffo singsthissofastthatthefeelingoffondnesswhichSusannahasforCherubinoisquite lost.

TheCarmeliteconventwas thefirstreligiouscommunity toapplyforlegalrecognition underSweden's10-year-old FreedomofReligionAct.This lawabolishedpracticallyall restrictionsonCatholics,with thesingleexceptionthatmonasteriesandconventscannot establish,themselveswithout formalpermissionfromthe government,.Parliamentary approvalofthisgovernmentalpermissionwasrequired
inthefirstinstanceofthe law'sapplication.
Thegovernmentapproved theCarmelite'spetitionin January.Thepracticaleffect ofthisapprovalisthatthe Carmelitecommunitymayexpandto21nuns.Butno suchexpansionisatpresent envisioned.Oftheconvent's eightnuns,sixarefromBelgiumandtwoareSwedish. Theconventwasfoundedin 1956.
Stipulationslaiddownby theSwedishgovernmentcon cerningtheconventagreein principlewithcanonlawand theconstitutionsoftheCarmeliteOrder.Theseconcern inspectionofthepremises, supervisionofthecommunity'sactivities,theage(at least24)atwhichmembers maymakepermanentvows, circumstancesofpossiblereleasefromsuchvowsand protectionofthemembers' civilrightsandobligations.
The-changeofstatusrecentlygrantedtheCarmelite nunshasnotchangedtheir dailyactivities.
Therenoware13Catholic congregationsandordersactiveinSweden,sixformen andsevenforwomen.Ofthe eightorderswhichwereestablishedhereduringSweden'sCatholicMiddleAges,five arerepresentedinthecountrytoday.
DuringtheMiddleAgesa largeCarmelitemonastery waslocatedatLandskrona, some11milesnorthofwhere theCarmeliteSistersnot, live.
About150CatholicSisters areactivein.Swedentoday, runningkindergartens,day nurseries,elementaryand secondaryschools,convales. centandnursinghomes,a youthhostel,andworkingas parishhelpers.Thereare some30,000Catholicsinthe country,ofwhom10,000are native-born.ThetotalpopulationofSwedenisabout 7,800,000.

Ubangi,orwhatisthe same,theDioceseofMolegbe,isinthenorth-westernpartofCongointhe ProvinceofEquatoria.The totalpopulationisabout halfamillion.Theterritory hashardlybeenaffectedby eventsthataredisturbingto peace.Thehistoryofthe areaisinfactbuiltaround thelifeofoutstandingmissionarieswhohavespent theirlivesthere.
TheDioceseofMolegbe hasamajorandaminor seminary,.anormalschool whichhasalreadytrained hundredsofteachers,an agriculturalschoolanda boys'collegeinadditionto elementaryschools.The priestsofthedioceseare assistedintheirworkby SisterswhoprOvideforthe educationofgirlsandalso forthecareofthesick. RecentlytheSistersopened twohomeeconomyschools.

ONAUGUST15,anew churchwasblessedatthe missionstationofChiangMei(Pescadores)intimefor thebaptismof130catechumenswhohavejustcompletedtheircourseofreligiousinstructioninthis youngCatholicmission.
TheCatholicmissionsin thePescadoresareincharge oftheItalianCamillian Fathers,whobegantheir apostolicworktherein1952. Atpresentthereare771 baptisedCatholicsinthe entiremission.
ThePescadoresconsistof 62islandsofwhichenly22 areinhibited.Theirtotal populationisslightlyover 100,000,ofwhomseveral thousandsareProtestants. Christianitywasintroduced totheislandsbyPresbyterianmissionariesabout70 yearsago.
Thegreatmassofthe populationfollowsareligion thatisanadmixtureof BuddhismandTaoism,with relativeancestorworship. ThegoddessMatzuisregardedasprotectressofthe islandsandaplaceof honourisgiventoher statueonmostfishingboats. Theyoungseemtobeabandoningtheoldsuperstitions, buttheyareatthesame timebeingInfluencedby atheism.
Thelivingstandardonthe islandisquitelow,but therehasbeensomeimprovementduringthepast yearsthankslargelytorelieffromAmerica.

THECEREMONYofSeptember3intheCathedral ofLosAngeles,when24Lay MissionHelperspromisedto serveinthemissionsfor periodsoftwoorthreeyears andreceivedassignments accordingly,wasinspiring enoughinitself,butitsfull meaningcanonlybeunderstoodifonelooksbeyond whatimmediatelyappeared totheeye. Inthefirstplace,itshould benotedthatthese24men andwomenwhopledged theirpromisestoservethe missionsinthehandsofHis EminenceCardinalJames FrancisMcIntyre,were peoplepossessedofavariety oftalents.Therewere nurses,teachers,anaircraft pilot,aplumber,acertified accountant,secretaries,a magazineartistandothers whowillgivetheirservices tothemissions.Therewere twomarriedcouplesand thereweretwowhowere beginningtheirsecondassignmentasLayMission Helpers.
ThesenewLayMission Helperswillnowjoin70 otherswhoareatpresent servinginmissionsfromthe SouthPacifictoSouth Africa.Theyaddtheir namestothelistof118who havebecomeLayMission Helperssincethefoundation oftheassociationin1956. Theyareachosengroup thathas,sotospeak, ARRIVED.Behindthemare manyyoungCatholicAmericanswhowouldliketo followthem.Morethannine thousandinquirieshave beenreceivedattheheadquartersoftheLayMission Helperssincetheywereorganisedin1956.
