Theuniquedistinctionof Christmasinthisrespectwas locallyalteredwhenPopeBenedictXIV,grantedaspecial concessiontoSpainandPortugal,invirtueofwhichpriests werepermittedtosaythree MassesonAllSouls'Day(2 November).Veryrecently,this concessionhasbeengranted generally,inorderthatthe HolySoulsmaybebenefitedby aspecialisedcommemoration.

Othersfindnoreliablebasisfor thestatement,andcontendthat wehavenogenuinedecisionof thatPopeinliturgicalmatters.
TheGelasianSacramentary (5th.-6th.century)givesthree MassesforChristmas,whilethe liturgiesofMilan,Gaul,Spain. assigntotheFeastbutone Mass,althoughIldefonsus,a bishopofSpain,alludesinthe year945toatripleMasson Christmas,Easter.Pentecost. andtheFeastoftheTransfiguration.

SofarastheMassesof Christmasareconcerned,the reallydistinguishingfeatures are,therefore,notsomuch theirnumber,astheirrubrical assignmenttomidnight,dawn, sunrise,andtheiraccompanyingsymbolicandmystical meaning.Ontheotherdaysof theyear,thepresentlawofthe Church(affirmedinCanon821 oftheCode)requiresthatthe celebrationofMassshouldnot beginsoonerthanonehourbeforedawnorlaterthanone houraftermidday.

Asweconsiderthismessage, twostrikingpointsimpressus, namely,theintimateconnection oftheRosarywiththedevotion totheImmaculateHeartof Mary,andtheanalogybetween therequestmadebyOurLady toSt.MargaretMaryinbehalf ofHisownSacredHeartandthe requestofOurLadytoLuciain behalfofherImmaculateHeart.
InthedevotionoftheFirstFive SaturdayswenoticethemeditationofthemysteriesoftheRosaryandtherecitationofthe Rosaryasanintegralpartofits practices.WhenwereflectuponthewordsaddressedbyOur LadytoLucia,wecannotfailto understandthatsheismeantto dofortheImmaculateHeartof MarywhatSt.MargaretMarydidfortheSacredHeartof Jesus,andthepracticeofthe FirstSaturdaysistorunparal- lelwiththeFirstFridays,Thegreatpromisemadetothose whowillpracticeeachofthese devotionsislikewisesimilar. TheBlessedVirginherselftold LuciathatOurLordwishedher tobethemeansofmakingHis Motherknownandloved,andin particulartoestablishinthe worldthedevotiontoherImmaculateHeart,
HORRIFYINGVISION.
Theprecedingrevelationswere madeinthesecondapparition', June13,1917.Thereisstill anotherimportantpartofthe messageconcerningthedevotiontotheImmaculateHeartof Mary,whichwasrevealedin thethirdapparition,July13, 1917,Onthisday,atnoon,the threelittleseers,keepingtheap- pointmentwiththeLady,were attheCovadaIria,andsome five them.thousandpeoplesurrounded Theapparitiontookplace likeinthetwopreviousmonths.OurLadyrepeatedtheadmonitionthattheyshouldsaythe Rosarytoobtainthecessationof
OnOctober13th.,1917,atthelastapparitionatFatima,the sunseemedtoleaveitsorbit,flungitselfcrazilyattheearth, asiftocrash,thenrighteditself.Themiracle,promised byOurLadytothethreechildren,waswitnessedbyacrowd of70,000people.
thewar,andsherenewedher promiseofdisclosingheridentityonOctober13, providedtheywouldcontinuetocomeon the13th.ofeachmonthtothat sameplaceandattheappointedtime.Thenthemostterrifying viewwasshowntothethreelittleshepherds.Theabyssof hellwasdisclosedbeforetheir eyes.Thissightlastedonly foramoment,butwithoutthe helpoftheheavenlyMother, whohadpromisedtotakethem toheaven,theywouldhavedied ofhorror,asLucialaterdeclared.ThencamethesecondrevelationconcerningthedevotiontotheImmaculateHeartof Mary.TheLadysaidtoher littleconfidants:"Youhaveseen hell,whereinthesoulsofsinnerswillsufferforever,To savesoulstheLorddesiresthat thedevotiontomyImmaculate Heartbeestablishedinthe world.IfwhatItellyouis done,manysoulswillbesaved andtherewillbepeace.The warisgoingtoend.ButifsinnersceasenottooffendGod,not
muchtimewillelapse,andpre- ciselyduringthenextPontificate,anotherandmoreterrible warwillcommence.Whena nightilluminatedbyanunknownlightisseen,knowthat isthesignalwhichGodgives youthatthechastisementofthe worldforitsmanytransgres- sionsisathandthroughw:,!, famine,persecutionotae ChurchandoftheHolyFather. Truetoherpromise,OurLadycalledthetwoyoungerseersat anearlyagetotheireternalre-
BishopJose,ofLeiria,iscustodianofthesecret phecyofOurLady,whichisnottoberevealed ward.Francisco,whohad beenwarnedtosaymanyRosariesforahappydeath,recited theRosaryseveraltimesdaily withgreatconfidenceanddevotion,andattainedahighdegree ofcontemplation.Hediedon April4,1919,afterashortlife ofpenanceandapostolicactivityinaspiritofreparationand love. Eightyearsagothereoccurred aneventofgreatpromisefor WesternAustralia.Therewas foundedatGuildfordaSeminarydedicatedtoSt.Charlesfor thepurposeoftrainingyoung menwhofeltthattheyhada calltothepriesthood.Onthat occasionitwasasiftheChurchesofPerthandGeraldtonhad becomeofageandwereformally celebratingtheirnuptialswith Christ.HenceforwardtheseChurcheswouldbeablebyreproductiongraduallytoprovideand educatetheirownchildrenfor theSacredMinistryofthe Priesthood,thusensuringtheir presentmaintenanceandtheir futureprogressandexpansion.

utions.DuringtheCrimeanWar, sheaccompaniedheruncleto Scutariandworkedasanurseon transports.Shewasapupilnurse inPariswiththegreatFlorence Nightingale. In1859BishopPompallierof NewZealandreturnedtoFrance toappealformissionariesand
facedgreathardship.Fornine monthsdidnottastebread,they wentshortfrequentlytofeedthe poor.Theynursedthesickand tilledtheland.Financewasan everpresentproblem,butMother Aubertfacedthesituationwith herfamoussaying"Providence ismybank!ithasneverfailed

In1906cametheestablishmentofthenowfamousHome ofCompassionatIsland Innumerabledifficultieshadtob. faced,butbythistimeMother Aubertandhersistershadso endearedthemselvestothepeplethatallclassesandcreeds volunteeredtohelp.Fromthe highesttothehumblestthey flockedtoIslandBay,andremovingtheirtop-hats,bowlersor tweedcaps,theysettowork withawill.
In1910thepeoplecelebrated thejubileeofMotherAubert's comingtoNewZealandbypackingtheTownHallofWellingtonwhereamidstgreatenthusiasm,theGovernorLordWellin-

workoftrainingthesmallboys whoaredomiciledthere.
Theeventoftheirarrivalwas theresultofmuchnegotiation, andtheArchdioceseisfortunate tohavesecuredtheservicesof thesenuns.TheorderwasfoundedinNeWZealandbyMother Aubert,andwascanonicallyestablishedbyHisGrace,Dr.Redwoodin1892.ItwasplacedundertheprotectionofOurLady ofCompassion.
Thefounderwasapersonof outstandingvirtueandcourage. Atthetimeofherdeathshewas describedbytheeditorofaseculardailypaper,as"New Zealand'sGreatestWoman," WhenthefulllifeofMotherAubertiswrittentherearemany whoclaimthatshewillberankedamongstthegreatwomen oftheentireworld.Bybirthshe wasFrench.Asayoungwoman inhernativecountryherassociatesincludedmanywhowereto bringgreathonourtotheChurch.
PaulineJaricotthefoundress oftheSocietyforthePropagationoftheHaithwasaclose friend,asalsowasSt.Madeleine SophieBarat(canonisedin1925). Shewasprivilegedtoenjoythe friendshipoftheCured'Arsfor eightyears,andlongbeforeMotherdreamtofgoingtotheAn tipodes,theCureforetoldmuch ofwhatat,uldhappentoher there,andheevenvisualisel someofherNewZealandinstit-
nunstoworkamongsttheMaoris inNewZealand.MotherAubert arrivedinhernewcountryon December30th1860.Therewas aMaoriwarinprogress.Mother Aubertandhercompahionscould speakneitherEnglishnosMaori, buttheywereundismayed. BishopentrustedtotheSisters theestablishmentofaMaoriOrphanageatPonsonby.Mother Aubertmademanyjourneysto outlyingMaorisettlements,and wasabsolutelyfearless.Thesituationdidnotimprove,theMaori warsbecamemorewidespread andfinancialdifficultiesencom passedthemissionsandthecolonistsonallsides,BishopPornpalliergavetheSisterstheopportunityofreturningtoFrance, buttheydecidedtostay.
Bysellingembroideryandinstructingpupilsinlanguages theymanagedtosurvive.
In1871thewarssubsidedand theMaorichildrenwerereturnedtotheirparents.TheSisters transferredt%HawkBayto workwiththeMaristFathers. Theyactedascatechists,interpreters,schoolteachers,choir mistresses,organistsandnurses, andwereresponsibleforthe openingofthelargeschoolfor MaorisandEuropeanswhich wasestablishedatMeeaneein 1873. In1884MotherAubertleftto establishaschoolforMaorichit drenatWanganui.Therethey
tonpresentedL'otherAubert withachequefor£2,000.
Sincethentheworkhasgone steadilyahead.Furtherfoundationshavebeenestablishedin NewZealand,andin1941St. Anne'sHomeofCompassionwas openedatBrokenHillfororphangirls.Laterfemalechronic patientswerealsoadmitted.This uiasthefirst,anduntilnowthe only,foundationinAustralia.
MotherAubertdiedin1926at theageof91,mournedbythe entirenation.Herfuneralwas themostinspiringfuneralever giventoanywomaninNew Zealand.LordBledisloe,theGo, vernorGeneralofNewZealand saidofher"Manytributeshave beenpaidtoMotherAubert's workandtohermagneticperss
onality.Shemadeherreligiona vehicleofsublimeChristiancharity,comprehensiveinitsscope, undiscriminatinginitsambit, "Catholic"inthetruestsenseof theword.AllhumanunfortunatescamewithinitsbeneA:ent embracetowhateverreligious, community,classorracethey belong." ToherSistersMotherAubert hasbequeathedawonderfultradition.Sinceherdeaththey havecarriedonherworkalong thelinesshelaiddown,viz:to labourforthepooraloneregardlessofcreedorrace,nofees beingaskedoraccepted,alldependingwhollyonvoluntary contributions.WhentheSisters wereapproachedtoseeifthey wouldcomeandassisttheChri-
stianBrothersatCastledarein theirworkofcaringfortheorphanandtheabandoned,their acceptancewtasimmediate.The Archdiocesehasindeedbeen fortunate.TheSIstersweremet onarrivalbyHisGracetheArchbishop,whowelcomedthemto hisArchdiocese,expressedhis appreciationoftheircoming,and assuredthemthattheywould neverregretthedecisionthey hadmade.

Thetaskofreducingthebroad canvasofDickenstoanintelligible(andcredible)dramaticrepresentationlastingtwoanda halfhours,isofsuchmagnitude thatitstaggerstheimagination.
Howisonetorecapture,within thebrieflimitsofthedrama,all thecolouranddiversityofthat greatparadeofscenesandcharacterswhichDickenshasfloatedbeforetheenquiringmindin endlessphantasmagoria?That Mr.McMaster,junr.,hasachievedacommendabledegree ofplausibilityinhisattempt standsverymuchtohiscredit; buttheactionisnecessarilyepisodic,andsomelongwaitsbetweensceneswereexperienced.
Thecharactersarenotgradu- allydevelopedforusinthis adaptation.Thereisnoneed forthat,ofcourse,becausewe knowthemsowell.Theyleap outofthepagesofthebookat us-thetenderOliver,thebump-tiousBumble,thebrutalSykes, thedistraughtNance,therascallyFaginandhisgangof imps,etc.
BecauseDickenstendedtowardscaricatureratherthan characterisation,thesepeopleof theplaymakenodeepandlastingimpressiononourminds, andthecreationofanatmosphereinwhichwecantempor- arilyloseourselvesisconstantlyimpeded.Thisruinsthe dramaticelement,andsothe bestwecanhopeforislively melodrama.
