Oneoftheperennialproblems ofteachersiswheretofindan inexpensivetext-bookwhich bearsadirectrelationtothe curriculum.Thisisspecially thecaseinthematterofarthistoryandcriticism.Thereare anumberofexcellentmanuals onthemarketdealingwith eitherpictorialcriticismorthe historyofart;but,evenifthe priceisnotprohibitive,noneof themfulfillocalrequirements. Accordingly,theattractivelittle manual,Art,Artists,andAppreciation,byMessrs.Morganand Price,5/6(E.J.Dwyer),willbe welcomedbytheharassedteacher,withtheexactingdemands oftheLeavingCertificateand matriculationexaminationsbeforehimandtheneedforeconomybothintimeandmoney. Thebookisdividedintofour parts.Inthefirstsection,the historyofpaintingisoutlined acordingtotheprincipalschools, andtheorganicdevelopmentis graphicallyillustratedbyatree, showingtheirinter-relationship.

Thepicturesinquestionare wellreproduced,sothatthestudenthasthematterunderdiscussionimmediatelybeforehim. Inthiswayheistrainedto thinkforhimself,buttothink inanorderlyfashionandwith referencetoclearlydefined principles.Anydangerofcriticismwithoutreferencetothe painter'spurposeisprecluded however,bytheprominencegiventothatquestionfromthebeginningandbytheclearenunciationofparticularaimsinthe historicalsurvey.Thelastsection,Portraiture,furtherreinforcesthelesson,byrevealing theartist'sidealofbeauty,not inlifelesssymmetry,butina harmonyoftheinfinitevariations,physiologicalandpsychological,whicharecharacteristic oftheindividual.
