"Idon'tknowhowmuchdamagewecoulddotheCommunistsfromtheair,"heexplained. "Asamatteroffact,wedidn't doverymuchdamagetothe Japanesefromthemilitarypoint ofview.Themainthingisthat wegave150,000,000peopleawill
toresist-tofightonintheface ofoverwhelmingodds.That, Ibelieve,wecandoagain."

CatholiccommentonthedecreeoftheHolyOffice againstCommunismhasbeenreservedinthiscountrybecausethedecreewillnotcomeintoforceuntilithasbeen officiallypromulgated.Apartfromthisconsideration,itis clearthatthedangerofCatholicco-operationwith,orsympathytowards,Marxistaimsisnotanywheresorealand greatasitisinEurope,especiallyinthoseunhappynations undertheironheeloftheSoviet'ssatellites.That,however,isnottominimisetheinroadsthattheRedheresyhas madeamongtheweakandfecklessoftheFold.Itisscarcelypossibletoreadthenewspaperswithoutrealisingthat thenamesofmanyofthosewhoaimtosabotageanddestroy ourfaithandourcountryareofmenbaptisedandreared inthehouseholdoftheFaith.But,speakingbyandlarge, theCommunistPartyhasfailedutterlytosplitthesolidarityoftheCatholicranksinthiscountry.Thattheyhave abandonedthetechniqueofthe"outstretchedhand"which soughttodriveawedgebetweentheCatholicworkersand theHierarchy,issufficientendorsementoftheirfailure.

InotherlandsinEurope,however,theexperienceof theChurchhasnotbeensohappy.Notablyinthecaseof Hungary,therewasconsiderabledefectionamongtheyouth organisations,anddespitethefactsthattheHungarian peoplearesteepedinCatholictraditionandCatholicsrepresent70percentofthepopulation,itwastheweaknessof iquitouscondemnationofCardinalMindszenty.InCzechoiquitouscodemnationofCardinalMindzsenty.InCzechoslovakia,ontheotherhand,wherehistoricaldevelopments mighthaveledtotheanticipationofdivision,therehas beenanimpressivesolidarity,sufficientlygreatindeedto detertheRedpuppetregimeofGottwaldfrombringing ArchbishopBeranto"trial."Inothercountries,suchas Bulgaria,therehavebeendisquietingdefectionseven amongtheclergy.Butinalltheseinstancesitmustbe stressedthatveryfewCatholicsareactingasfreeagents andthatthesameculpabilityisnotattributabletoacts,even ofapostasy,whencommittedunderduress.
Thisfundamentalaspectofthematterisunderlinedin thedecreesoftheHolyOffice.WhileontheonehandCommunistsareexcommunicatedspecificallyasapostatates,the censuresareaimedatthosewho"knowinglyandwillingly" co-operateinthearch-heresy.Thedecreedoesnotmore thanclarifytheessentialandbasicexclusivenessofthe CatholicChurchandCommunisttheoryandpractice.It notonlysolemnlywarnsbothclergyandlaitywho,under stressofpersecutionandconfusion,havesupportedorcompromisedwiththeforceswhicharefightingChristianity,but itchallengesthewholeCommunistoffensiveinEasternEuropeandthroughouttheworld.Initsscopethedecreeis exceedinglydrastic,coveringeventhereadingofCommunistbooks,newspapers,periodicalsandleaflets,butitisnot moreseverethanthemenaceitaimstohalt.Henceforththe dieiscast.Noconfusionremains:itisChristoranti-Christ.

Itappearsinevitablethatthe futurewillseenewdevelopmentsinconstructivepolicytowardsJapanwhichweshall likelessandless.Thereis,for example,thepopulationquestion -forwhichthesolutionfavouredhereisanintensive"birthcontrol"campaign,whichisnot onlyimmoral,butseemscertain toproveineffectualinachieving itsobjectiveforaconsiderable time.Oneofitschiefadvocates, Dr.WarrenThompson,admits thatevenatareducedrateof increase,theJapanesepopulationwillreachninetymillion, andprobablyfarmore,ineight years'time.TheCommunists maintainthatundera"people's democracy"sufficientagricultu- ralexpansioncouldtakeplace toprovidealivingforahundred million;but,whenallthepossibilitiesofindustrialismandag- rarianimprovementshavebeen exhausteditseemsclearthat therewillhavetobearesort totheone"wayout"whichourleadersrefusetocontemplateemigrationtootherPacificlands. Complacency Condemned
AtthesametimeconcentrationcampsintheSoviet zoneshowaconstantincrease oftheirunhappypopulation. Accordingtofiguresavailable here,some250,000people havebeenwantonlyarrested sincetheendofthewarand confinedtothesemasshorror jails,whichfirstwereintroducedinSovietRussia,then adoptedbytheNaziregime, andnowrevivedunderthe hammerandsickle.Some 100,000oftheseprisonersare knowntohavebeen"liquidated,"andanother50,000deportedtoslavecampsinRussia.About35,000werereleased.Amongthemwere numerousvictimsdetainedfor nootherreasonbuttheirfaith andtheiroppositiontothe communisttyranny.
Twoofthesecampsinthe SovietzoneofGermanyare particularlynotorious:BuchenwaldinThuringiaand Sachsenhausennearhere.The lattercan"accommodate"100, 000prisoners.Some15,000 aredetainedtherenowwithouttrial.About300'capes'are

BornatDarwinin1894,he cametothisStatewhenachild, withhisparents,Mr.andMrs. BernardMurphy,whobecame prominentresidentsoftheMeekatharraandPeakHilldistricts. In1925Tomwasengageddriving themailontheMeekatharraMarbleBarroute.Hemarried Florence,thedaughterofMr.and Mrs.WalterLee,alsowellknown inthedistrict,in1927,andtook upresidenceinVictoriaPark, wherehebecameanenthusiastic workerinChurchaffairs.EvincingakeeninterestintheHiber-
