OnJune6,1942,hewasarrestedbyNaziGestapoduring theCzechoslovakianoccupation forhisintransigentstandforhis people.Threeyearshespent inDachaucamp,andaroused theadmirationofthemany Czechpoliticalprisonerswho sharedhisincarcerationuntilhe wasliberatedbythearrivalof Americanforges.HethenreturnedtoSt.Anneasrector.
WhenPresidentBenestold ArchbishopBeranjustbefore hisconsecrationto"persuadethe Slovakprieststhattheyneed nothaveanyapprehensionsin mattersoffaithandreligion," that"ourStaterespectsthefreedomoffaithandreligion,"it wasaprospectoflittleduration.

ThelateMrs.Lloydwasone ofthefirstladysettlerstoarriveinNorsemanin1889,where herlatehusbandwasthefirst Postmasterofthattown.She afterwardswenttoGreenbushes, WaginandSandstone,onthe Goldfieldsin1910,andafterwardstoCoolgardie,Kalgoorlie,theBunburyandPerth,where lateMr.LloydwasDistrict PostalInspector.

Thepost-warmethodsofCommunisminCzechoslovakiaprovideastrikingexampleofthe"scientificpattern" thatgovernstheCommunistwaronreligionandthe Church.Itsguidingprinciplewastopreferguileto forceaslongasresultswereobtained.Openpersecutionwasreservedforthetimewhentrickeryfailedtogain the"spontaneousfollowing,"whichCommunismsomuch desires'FollowingtheliberationofCzechoslovakiain May,194:i,whentheRussianswerestillinthecountry, theCommunistsprofitedbythisuniqueopportunityand seizedallimportantgovernmentposts,includingcontrol overarmyandpolice.WhentheSovietforcesleftthe countrythesituationimprovedandfearoftheCommunistslessened.yettheotherpoliticalpartiesfailedtooust themfromtheirpowerfulpositions.Notcontentwith amerelypassiveacceptancebythepopulation,theCommuniststhenstrovetowinaspontaneousacceptanceby themasses.Forthispurposetheyemployedentirely noveltactics. RealisingthatCzechoslovakiaisa countrywitholdCatholictraditionsdatingbacktothe nintharidtenthcenturies,andthatabout78percentof thepopulationisCatholic,Communismmadeadeliberate efforttoposeasfriendsandprotectorsofreligion.
ArchbishopJosefBeran,ofPrague,andBishopStephenTrochta,ofLitomerice,bothofwhomhadbeenimprisonedbytheGermans,werehailedasheroesandtheir appointmenttotheirpresentpostswashailedloudlyby Communists.ThegeneraltendencyofCommunismin Czechoslovakiaacttrthewarwasnottopersecutethe Churchopenly,butrather?owinoverCatholicsandget themunderCommunistdominationliketheenslavedOrthodoxkschismatic)ChurchinRussia.Communists,for severalyears,playedacat-and-mousegame,assumingan airoffriendliness,yetnevergivinguptheirroleof"protector,"withtheaimoffinallysmashingtheChurch.The strugglebetvieen(;orninunismandtheotherpoliticalpartiesreacheditsclimaxbeforethenationalelectionsin May,1946.Communismsoughtanoverallmajority. KnowingthatCatholicsweretheopponentsmosttobe feared,theypublishedleafletsassertingthatCommunism stoodfor"protection"ofreligionandlabellinganystatementtothecontraryavilelie.
Communistsdidnotwinthe1946elections;still,by formingacoalitionwiththemoderatelyMarxistSocial Democrats,theyhaaparliamentarymajority.The SocialDemocratsplayedadoublegame:sometimessupportingtheCommunistsinParliament,butmoreoften theotherparties.FromtheseelectionsuntilFebruary. 1948,thesituationbecamemoreandmorehopefulin Czechoslovakia.Communiststrengthsteadilydeclined. Theirviolenceandtyrannical,behaviourlostthemany sympathytheymayhavegained.Thefreedomofthe pressbecameevermoreapparent.Thiswasthesituationwhen,suddenly;thecatastrophecame.Communistsrealisedthatthenextelectionwouldbedisastrous forthem,andanorderfromMoscowforestalledsucha calamity.Thuscamethecoupd'etatofFebruary,1948. Communistshavinggainedpowerthroughthe"workers' police"andtheStatepolice(whichtheycontrolledever since1945)oustedallnon-partymembersfromlocai councilsandotherautonomousbodies.
AllCatholicdiocesanpapers,thoughnotpoliticalin outlook,werebanned.TheCommunistanti-religious struggle,hithertosocleverlyconcealed,becamepainfully obvious.Churchpropertywastakenover,allCatholic societiesweresuppressedandCatholicperiodicalswere barred.Despitealleffortsatlegitimateco-operation,however,AichbishopBeranwasbitterlyattackedfornotpermittingprieststotakepartinpolitics,followingsuspensionoftwopriestswhodisregardedtheArchbishop's instructions.Sincethen,allpretenseofthesocalled "protection"oftheChurchhasbeendropped,and;enlaced byopenwarontheclergy,andespeciallytheBishops.In thebeginning,thisopenwarwasnotwageddirectlyby theGovernmentbutthrough"thepeople."Newspapersandradios,undercompleteCommunistcontrol, hutpre:tendingtospeakinthenameof"thepeople,"demanded"loyalty"ofthepriestsanddenouncedthe"reactionaryattitude"oftheHierarchy.
Catholicschools,alwayssmallinnumber.were closedortakenoverbytheState.OnlyafewCatholic schoolsareleftto-day.Stateschoolsprofessandteach atheism.PublicationofCatholicbookswasmadeextremelydifficult.Eastern-RiteCatholicscameinfor particularlyseverepersecutiontheirpriestsarebeing imprisonedonebyone.EventhesmallbodiesofProtestantsarehunted.Allcitizenswhorefusedtojointhe CommunistPartywerereducedtoaninferiorstatus. Thousandsofcivilservantsweredismissed.Theuniversitiesareonlyopento.childrenofthosewhoadvocate thene'.regime.Butinspiteofallthis,bothCzechano SlovakCatholicsstoodfast,andtheirpriestsstoodI!), them.Religionhastakenonanewmeaningforthem andha.;becomemoreintenseintheirhearts.

Theambulanceleftincharge ofSuperintendantW.Henneker andAmbulanceOfficerCray,two wellknownCatholicmen.When theysawtheconditionofthe patient, tactedtheyimmediatelycontheFlyingDoctorBase bywireless,askingforapriest andadoctortomeetthemonarrival.Rev.FatherMcCarthy andamedicalmanmettheambulance,butGodhadother plans,asthepatientdiedshortlybeforearrivalatKalgoorlie.

Selectionofapriestwhohad foryearsbeenthevictimof Naziconcentrationcampsservedtostressthegreatsuffering whichtheCzechnationandits priestsenduredduringWorld WarII.
ArchbishopBeranranthe gauntletoflongyearsinthe concentrationcampsofPankrac,Terezin,andDachau.He hadsuffereddeepesthumiliationsandwasthereforethebest exponentandexampleofloyaltytotheChurchandmoral fortitude.
Bornin1888andordainedin 1911,theArchbishophadserved asaparishpriest,ateacher,and aseminaryrector.Whenhe wasassociatedwithSt.Ann's NormalSchool,Prague,hewas knownbythenunsas"Our Lamb."(Beranmeansramin Czech.)Thiswaspartlybecauseofhissmallstature,but chieflyonaccountofhismodesty.
Asaseminaryrector,hewas a"Father"inthefullsenseof theword.Heledtheseminariansinpietyandcharity.He prayedwiththem,taughtthem, sangwiththem.andplayed footballwiththem.

Atthetimehewastakento theDachaucampin1942forhis persistentoppositiontotheNazis, theArchbishopwastheRev. JosefBeran,rectoroftheArchiepiscopalSeminaryinPrague.

greatstresstoserveasHismedium,"Mr.Schmitzsaid.His wordpictureoftheprelateat Dachaufollows: "Amanofmediumbuildand dignified,priestlybearing,he immediatelyimpressedtheprisonersworkinginthereception officeoftheconcentrationcamp. TheCommunistgovernmentofficialtoldthenotedfoe ofMarxism:

Adjustinghisskullcapatophishead,thelittleprelate smiled,walkedovertotheclosetnearhisdesk,andopenedthedoorslowly.Hepickedupsomeragsandsaid:
"Here'smyuniformfromDachau,let'sgo."
Thechagrinedministerwalkedoutoftheofficeabruptly.
Thisanecdote,showingthetypeofchurchmantheCommunistsfaceintheirwarontheChurch,wastoldbya Czechnowlivinghere.HeisAnthonyJ.Jandacek,whoescapedfromCzechoslovakiaandisnowaneditorforthe ChicagoBohemian"DailyNarod,"aCatholicnewspaper.
eludingbrigands,assassinsand commoncriminalsofeverykind, anditwastherethatIfirstperceivedthenobilityofhistruly sacerdotalnature.Wesoonbecamewellacquainted,andin ouroff-dutyhourswehadmany profound'discussions.
"DoctorBeran'smostcharacteristictraitwasthathewasalwayscalm,whateverhappened. Hiscourageneverfailed,althoughforhim,too,asforalmosteveryprisoner'atDachau, situationsarosewhichinvolved mortaldangers.
"Tohearconfessionwas strictlyforbidden,andthemost severecorporalpunishment awaitedanypriestcaughtfloutingthatregulation.Dr.Beran knewthis,ofcourse,andhealso knewthecaseoftheDeanof GreinontheDanube,Austria,a manof64,who,givenawayby anagentprovocateur,hadbeen cruellyfloggedforhavingheard afellow-prisoner'sconfession.
"ButDoctorBeranwasnotto bedeterredevenbysuchterrible risks;againandagainhegave proofofhissupremecourage andhisdisregardforhisown person,anddevotedhimself,a trueshepherdofsouls,tothe spiritualwelfareofhisfellow captives.
"Forallhisnaturalhumility, DoctorBeranwashighlyesteemedbyallwhoknewhimin thecamp;hewassoobviously arealman-oneofthosewhom GodAlmightychooses,intimes ofgreatstress,toserveasHis medium.

ThepeopleofPragueleftnodoubtoftheirfeelings whenthousandsgatheredbeforethehomeofArchbishop JosephBerantoshouttheirloyaltytotheprelate,whois,it appears,stillfreetomoveaboutthecity.
Meanwhile"OsservatoreRomano"pointedtothe"unbreakableunanimity"ofCommunistcountriesagainstthe Church,nomatterhowtheydifferinothermatters.
TheArchbishop'schanceryoffice,attachedtothepalace,hasbeenransackedbyCommunistofficials,whoalso havemannedtheprelate'sswitchboard,receptiondesk,takenoverallingoingandoutgoingmail,andthrownarmed guardsaboutthepalace.
WhilethusseriouslyrestrictingthelibertyoftheArchbishop,theregimefurtherarrestedtheChancellorofhis Archdiocese,theRev.RudolfDoerner,andtheArchbishop's secretary,FatherKucera.
Afterbeingunderwhatseemedhousearrestforseveraldays, theArchbishopfinallylefthis palacetokeepapreachingengagementatStrachovMonasteryinPrague.Thefirstwords ofthe60-year-oldprelatetothe 3,000peoplejammedintothe churchwere:
"Icometoyouandswearto youthatIwillneversignan agreementthatviolatesthelaws oftheChurch."Laterhedeclared:"Imaynotbeableto talktoyouverymanymore times.ButifyouhearanythingonthePragueradiosayingthatIhavesignedanagreement,don'tbelieveit,becauseI willneversignanagreement againstthelawsoftheChurch andhumanrights:'
Afterhereturnedtothepalace,thefaithfulgaveanimpromptudemonstrationforthe Archbishop,singingspirited hymnsasheappearedonthe balcony.However,theprelate urgedthefaithfultoleave,say, ing:"Donotletthemtrytorepresentthisasaprovocation."
DuringCorpusChristiservices inthecathedralthefollowing day,Communistshowleddown
theArchbishopashemadetwo attemptstospeak. Policehadbeenstationedat allthestreetsleadingtothecathedralinanefforttodissuade peoplefromentering.Some wererequiredtoshowtheir identitycards,otherswereurgedtogotoanearerchurch,and somewereturnedbackbecause thecathedralwas"toocrowded."Duringandafterthisdisruptedchurchservicenumerous arrestsarereportedtohavebeen made.
ArchbishopBeran'slatestlettertotheclergywasseemingly smuggledoutofthepalacedespitethefactthatitwasunder guard.Reportsstatethatpolicehadalsogone'fromparishto parishwarningpastorsthatit was"illegal"toreadtheletter fromthepulpit.Thewarning wasalmostcompletelydisregarded.
TheArchbishop'sletterdenied pointbypointthechargesmadeagainsttheHierarchybythe governmentinitspropaganda barrage.
"Wedeclarethatwehavebeen andareloyaltothisState,"the lettersaid.". Wefurther declarethatwehavealwaysbeenandareforajustagree-
mentwiththeStateinall Church-Statequestions.Such asettlementwouldresultin fruitfulco-operationbyChurch andStateinthecommontask. Howeversuchco-operationis onlypossibleiftheStatewill notinterferewiththeChurch andreligiousaffairsasthe Churchdoesnotinterferein politicalmatters."
TheMounting Crisis
Otherdevelopmentsinthe swiftlyclimaxingChurch-State crisis:
Inaletterblack-balledbythe governmentinadvance,the Archbishopsolemnlydeclared hewillneversignanagreement thatwouldsellouttheChurch toCommunism,andwarnedthat thefaithfulshoulddisregardany possiblefuturereportthathe hadsignedsuchanagreement.
AnearbrawlaroseinSt. VitusCathedralinPraguewhen agroupofCommunisthecklers shouteddowntheArchbishopas hetriedtopreach.

AwallofsilenceisagainsurroundingArchbishopJosefBeran ofPrague,whiletheworldis waitingtoseewhetherthepatternofreligiouspersecutionin Czechoslovakiawillbeworked outtothesameshockingconclusionasitwasafewmonths agoinneighbouringHungary.
Therearemanyindicationsto supportfearsthatArchbishop Beranisfacingarrestinthenear futureand"trial"onspurious chargessimilartothosebrought againstCardinalMindszenty.
Themostominousdevelopment inthatrespectwasanationwideradiotalkbytheCzechoslovakPremier,AntoninZapotocky,inwhichheaccused ArchbishopBeranbynameof participating"inpoliticalactionsagainsttheRepublic,"and added:"Legalactionwillbetakenagainstallsaboteurs,provacateursandinstigatorsofdiscordandunrest."
ThePrimeMinisteraccused theCzechoslovakhierarchyof "persecuting"priestsandwarnedthattheregimewould"not toleratethatArchbishopBeran andtheBishopsshouldterrorise andravishthefreedomofconvictionofpatrioticCatholic priests."Healsosaidthegov- ernment taneouswelcomedthe"sponCatholicActionmovement"andwouldprotect"all thosethousandsofpatriotic priestswhoremainfaithfulto theRepublicandwanttowork foritsbenefit."

AccordingtotheRomedispatchfromtheN.C.W.C.correspondent,authoritativesources thereseeaddedsignificancein thefactthattheChurchhas beenmorepromptandmoreemphaticthistimethaninthecase ofCardinalMindszenty
FatherCordovanibranded thepuppet"CatholicAction"as "schismatic,anti-Catholic,chainedtoCommunism."Hesaid itwasestablishedinopposition totheHierarchy,andcommentingonthemethodsusedinenrollingmembers,saidthesemethodsweresufficientlycharacterisedbythefactthateventhe namesofdeadpersonswereput onthelists.
Unconfirmedreportsfromother centresinCzechoslovakiasay thatanumberofpriestshave beenarrested,particularlyin Moravia,andthatArchbishop JosefMatocha,ofOlomouc,is beingsubjectedtothesameimpedimentsasthoseeffected againstArchbishopBeran.
ThereweremanyotherindicationstosupportfearsatArchbishopBeranfacingarrestinthe nearfutureand"trial"onspuriouschargessimilartothose broughtagainstCardinalMindszentyinneighbouringRedHungary.

Inthefirstplace,weoughttoacknowledgeadebtofgratitude tothenewly-formedTheatre CouncilofW.A.forsponsoring andorganisingtheFestival.As welookdownthelistoffifteen organisationscomprisingthe Councilwemustsurelybeconsciousofathrillofsatisfaction thatsomanybodies,eachwitha separatemembership,separate tradition,andseparateprogrammeofwork,havebeen gatheredtogetherunderone aegisforthepurposeoffosteringandfurtheringthecommon cause-whichisnolessthanthe advancementofdramafrom everyangle.
WhilewewelcometheFestivalasthefirstfruitoftheCouncil'slaboursoverthepastyearor so,wecannotblindourselvesto thefactthatasyetonlythesurfaceofthingshiddenhasbeen scratched.Onlyhalftheclubs participated.Notbyanymeans thebestcastswereseeninaction.Theplayswere,onthe whole,disappointing.
WhentheTheatreCouncil,as aspreludetotheFestival,organisedaplaycompetitionwhichattemptedtocombthewholeof Australiaforanoriginalscript worthyoftakingprideofplace onthemenuforplaygoershere, everyonebegantolookforward withkeenanticipationtotheoutcomeofthesearch.TomJudd's winningeffort,"LifeBurnsOn," wasnotatallsuchasmightjustifythebrighthopesheldforit. Butthemostunaccountabledevelopmentwasthepatentmediocrityofthosewhowereassigned thejobofbringingittolife. ItseemedasiftheTheatreCouncilwereunwillingtodomuch foritsownbaby.
WhileIspeakoftheTheatre CouncilIdonothaveinmind onlythosedevotedfewwhoform itsexecutive.Itseemstome thattheTheatreCouncil,properlyconsidered,istheaggregate ofallthosewhobelongtoit;so thatallaffiliatedclubshadaresponsibiitytoseethatathoroughlyadequateteamwaslined upfortheTheatreCouncirs productionoftheprize-v.inning play.
Thecastswereunevenlybalancedand,ingeneral,displayedlittleteam-workorindividual excellence.Theproducersranged fromskilfultoquiteinexpert
Thusagainitwouldappear thatnoteventheindividual clubsworkedhardtoachieve outstandingresults.Certainly theyhavealldonebetterintheir ownbackyards.
Thequestionarises:what shouldbethepurposeofaDrama Festival?Shoulditprovidean opportunityforsportingwith thebizarre,thenew,thestrange?

Thebasisonwhichawardsare madeneedssomerevision.The peoplewhogoalongtotheFestivalregularlyarenaturallyall keenlyinterestedindrama.They areentitledtoknowwhataviards aretobemadeandhowthe judgeswillarriveattheirdecisions.Suchknowledge,widely dispersed,wouldclothethecontestwithadditionalinterestand leavethejudgesopentonomore criticism-notsomuch-asis dailylevelledatfootballumpires.Thejudges'decisionis final;butwewouldliketomentallyfollowthemthroughtheir siftingoftheevidence.Nobodyappreciatesahole-in-thecornerjudgment. iftheFestivalhasdonenothing else,ithasdrawntheamateur theatreworldofPerthintoa smallercompass.Thisinitself isanotableachievement.Peopleofthetheatreneedtoget eachother'sviews,dispelpetty jealousies,andlearntolivetogether.Besides,theylikeit.

ThefifthentryintheDrama Festivalwas"TheLightof Heart,"writtenbyEmlynWilliamsandproducedfortheQ PlayersbyJamesA.Quinn.
Thisplayhadalotofmerit. Ipersonallythoughtitgotnearertotheheartofdramathan enythingseenpreviouslyatthis Festival.Itwasnotwithout weaknesses,buttherewerelong, grippingpassagesinitwhich roustweighheavilyinitsfaycurinreview.
Thestorywasbuiltrounda broken-downactor,whotemporarilyrecoveredhisrespectsbilityforhisdaughter'ssake,but crumpled pressureof reformbecametoogreatforhis weakcharacter.Hewasnot abletofaceupt"reality,and whenitlookedasthoughhe wouldlasetheproponwhichhe liedleanedforsolong(i.e.,when itappearedlikelythathisdaughterwouldmarryandleavehire), hsgaveuphisattemptstohelettntandrelapsedintodissipationandidleness.Thecommonplaceending-thefather'ssuicido sothatheshouldnolongerbesn encumbrancetohisdaughtersobbedtheplayofvirilityand leftabadfinalimpression.Itis remarkablethatamanwhohas thestandingMr.Williamshasin thecentemporsrytheatreshsuld victimtosuchanobvious temptationtoendtheplayunimaginatively.
Theweakendingandtheslow beginningwerethefactorsmilitatingmostagainstthesuccessof thisproduction.Thefirstscene draggedverynoticeably;and whenone'sfirstandlastimpressionsareunfavourable,itisdifficulttogivefullcreditforwhat issandwichedbetween.Itisno* surprising,therefore,that"The LightofHeart"didnotfigure prominentlyingeneraldiscussionsastowhatwouldwinthe dramacompetition.
Yettherewasmuchgoodwork init,andithadmoreemotional potentialitiesthananythingthat hadprecededit.Insuggesting theconflictthatmightarisewhen agirlwhohasconcentratedall herenergiesonlookingafterher widowedfatherawakenssudden. lytotheimpulsesofanother kindoflove,theplaystrucktrulyatfundamentalemotions. Thesewerefurtherstirredbythe sightofafather,genialbut weak-willed,proceedingsteadily, almostinevitably,downhill.Who amongusdoesnotappreci.atethestrengthofthedownward pullofhumanweaknesses?Who amongusisnotstirredby thesightofaweakmanattemptingtoovercomehisweakness?
Isupposewereactsympatheticallytowardslife'sfailuresbecausesubconsciouslywearesayingtoourselves,"There,butfor thegraceofGod,goI."
TheroleofMaddocThomas,
thedissolutefather,wasplayed byBrinsleyLane.Itwasa mustdifficultrole,andthatMr. Lanewasabletomakehiswork atleastinpartmemorablestands welltohiscredit.Hewas;tt impressiveatfirst,butgradually hegrewonone.Hisimitation ofadrunkenmanlackedconviction-howeasyitistoadopt stageconventionsthathavelong ceasedtobeenlivenedbysincerity!-andinhissceneswithhis daughterhemissedmanyopportunitiesofwinningaudience sympathy;buthebattledon,and eventuallyheestablishedacharacterwhichwasnotonlyprobablebutlikeable.
Ashisdaugher,PatriciaHalliganwasoutstandinglygood.She workedsincerelyandintelligentlyandconsistently.Shenever forgotthatshewasacripple,she movedpurposefullyandspoke clearlyandeffectively.Shemight, perhaps,beaccused,alongwith Mr.Lane,ofnotsufficientlydevelopingthesignificanceofthe peculiar and all-important father-daughterrelationship,but thisisnottosayshefailedcompletelyinthisregard.
IsobelScullionturnedina handycomedyroleasMrs.Banner,theunculturedladywitha drawlandanoccasionalstinging quip.DesmondHowardwas quiteasuccessasBevan,thepoliceman.Othersinthecastwere JohnHobson,JillnaHiggins,Roy KellardandBobbieHalligan. -DEGUSTIBUS.
"TAKEAKNIFEGENTLY"
Asthisplayhasbeenreviewed allengthinthesecolumnspreviously,itisunnecessarytosaymuchaboutit.Itwasthesixth presentationintheDramaFestival,enteredbyPatchTheatre. Becausetheplayhadalreadyhad apublicseason,itwasnotconsideredeligibleforcompetition awards.
ThereWasonechangein:ate originalcast-KenGoodletreplacingLionelNorthover-but therewerenoapparentchanges itithescript,andtherecouldwell havebeensome.Wecanonly concludethattheauthor,alocal man,mustbeoftheopinionthat hisworkdefiesimprovement. -DEGUSTIBUS. s
"THEBARTONMYSTERY"
Theseventh"play"wasoneof thoseintolerablydullattempts tomakedramaoutofthesortof stufffromwhichEdgarWallace madeagoodliving.Itwasan unqualifiedfailure.Itwasfoistedonthetheatrebylittle-known playwrightWalterHackettin 1916,andwasperformedinthis FestivalbytheGarrickClub,a Guildfordorganisation.
`THEGLASSMENAGERIE'
Theeighthandfinalplayin theDramaFestivalWasThe GlassMenagerie."ItwaswrittenbyTennesseeWilliams,and producedbyVernaJonesforthe IndependentPlayers.
Itwasanunusualplayin manyrespects.Forinstance, therewereonlyfourinthecast, andinsteadofbeingdividedinto actstheplaywaspresentedin twoparts.Then,thescenewas Memory;andthesetwassubdividedintosectionsrepresentingastreetentrance,aoving room,aloungeroom,etc.One ofthecharacterssteppedoutof theactionoccasionallytobecome anarrator.
TheplayerswereSydney Davis,PegPizer,EdnaHopkins, andJohnBradley.Inthatorder theywereintheplay,son, mother,daughter,andtheyoung manallthefusswasabout.The oungmanwasafriendofTom Wingfield;whenhecalledatthe Wingfieldapartmentoneevening Tom'smotherwasfirmlyunder theimpressionthathehadcome towoodaughterLaura;inany case,iftheideahadn'toccurred tohim,itwasherpurposethat itshould.Laura,however,wanotgoodmaterialtoworkon. Shewasphysicallydisabled,and acutelyawareofherinfirmity. Shelongedforromance,butdarednotembraceit.Shelavished heraffectionsontinyglassanimals.
TomWingfieldwasbored d dissatisfied,Laurawassensitive andpeculiar,andMrs.Wingfield wasflighty,selfishanddomineering.LifeintheWingfield apartmentwassqualidandvexatious.Quarrelfollowedupon quarrel,theromancedidnotblossom,andTomeventuallywalked outindisgust.Theplayended there.
Itwasnotaplaythatmoved onedeeply.Thespectacleofdomesticdiscordonapettyscaleis neversoul-stirring.Goodperformanceswereregisteredby EdnaHopkinsasthedaughter, andSydneyDavis,astheson,but PegPizerwasmiscast.She didnotlookoldenoughtobethe mother-hair-doandfigurewere tooyouthful-andhervoiceholds aqualitythatgoesbestincomedy.JohnBradleydidof entermuchintothepicture.The playwasanexperimentalform ofdrama,andasisoftenthecase withsuchventures,successuependedverygreatlyonthe strengthofthecharacterisation. InthisregardEdnaHopkins madethedeepestimpression.Her creationv-adelicate,wistsul, eccentricgirlwaswell-pointed andconvincing.Theworkof SydneyDavis,thoughgood.was ordinaryratherthanextraordinary;andtheplayneededextraordinaryactingtogiveituplift. -DEGUSTIBUS.

TheMissionSocietiesarebuilt onthehumbleunobtrusiveeffortsofhundredsofpeoplewho goaboutseekingalmsontheir behalf.Theyaretruetothe prototypeofPaulineJaricot,and thesocietiesinAustraliaacknowledgetheirwork.
Grantedtranquilityathome, peaceabroad,thecontinued counselandencouragementof theHierarchy,thezealouscooperationoftheclergyandreligious,thecharityofourpeo- ple-theNationalDirector,DiocesanDirectorsandstaffsofthe CatholicMissionOfficeswillendeavourtoincreasestillfurther theaidfromourcountrytothe expandingmissionfields,andthe needyheroicmissionariesin theireffortstoraisethestandardofChristamidstthepagan world.
ThisSocietydidnotmaintain theprogressofpreviousyears. Nodoubtthedifficultiesofthe year,especiallythefactthatthe children'smagazinewasnot published.largelyaffectedthis result.Theloss,however,was comparativelysmall,£1,543, anditishopedthatduringthe comingyearthepreviousfigures willberegained.
ADMINISTRATION.
TheNationalDirectorpointed outthattheMissionSocieties facedgraveproblemsofadministration.Theirmemberships werefixed,andyettheoverheadcostsweremountingdeeply andrapidly,aswerecostsin everyotherundertaking.
CATHOLICMISSIONS.
Sincethelossoftheformer editor,themagazineshaveexperiencedgravedifficulties.The NationalDirector,actingas DiocesanDirectorforSydney, foundthereallocationofduties meantacertainlagintheproductionofthemagazine.Itis hopedthatduringtheforthcomingyearthiswillbeimproved. Itisespeciallyinregardtothe magazinethatrisingcostsare noticed.Withcirculationincreasingandcostsofproduction mounting,themagazine,whilst stillthemainavenueofpropagandaisbecomingagraveproblem.
ThedepartureoftheApostolicDelegate,Dr.Panico,was thennotedinthereport.On hisarrivalthePontificalMissionSocietiesweresmall,unknown,andconsideredoflittle importance.In1935theyear ofhisarrival,thetotalsumcollectedwas£9,2002s.Id.

Atthismonth'smeetingthe wearingofthebadgewasdiscussed.Afterhearingthe viewsofvariousmembers,itwas ruledbythespiritualdirector thatthebadgeshouldbeworn atallspiritualfunctionsbyall members,andatothertimesat thediscretionofeachindividual member.
Eightorninemembershave signifiedtheirintentionoftakingpartintheRetreatatthe RedemptoristMonasteryduring theweek-endofAugust27th.28th.AllmemberswhopossiblycanshouldattendthisRetreat.Thosewhohavepreviouslyattendedoneormoreof theseRetreatswillneednosecondinvitation;thosewhohave not,willnotmissoneinfuture iftheyattendthisone.It shouldbenotedthatthereisno curtailmentofbodilycomfort duringthisspiritualbanquet, eating,drinking,sleeping,smoking,etc.,proceedasusual;speech istheonlysensethatsufferscurtailment. Thenightbeforetheeighth daywasagony,asindeedwere manynightsduringtheweary yearsofsuffering.
