"OurTown"Lsoneofthemost originalanddistinguishedplays ofourtime.Intoatheatre jadedwiththeconstantrepetitionofpolitedramassetinrefineddrawing-rooms,ThorntonWilderbroughtthebreathof Lifeitself,Lifeasitislivedby nineoutoftenoftheordinary peoplewhomakeuptheaveragecommunity."OurTown" couldbeyourtown.Itsinhabitantssaylittlethatisnewor profound,dolittlethatisdifferentfromthedoingsoftheirfellow-creaturestheworldover. Yetthewholeplayhasaqualitythatisalmostspiritual.There issimplictyinMr.Wilder'sview oftheseordinarypeople,but thereispoetry,too.Somehow hegivesustheveryessenceof theroutineofliving.

Togetdowntocases,Idonot denythatunderothercircumstances"OurTown"mighthave leftmewithamuchdeeper impressionthanitdid,butI addthat,havingseenwhatthe actorshavetoworkoninthis instance,Ifinditwell-nighimpossibletoimaginethat"Our Town"couldeverearn-from me,atanyrate-thedistinction ofbeingclassedas"amostdistinguishedplay." Itdealtwiththehumdrumaffairsofeverydayexistence.
HaroldHarvey,asortofcornpereornarrator,whoforsome unfathomablereasonwasstyled the"stagemanager,"cameonin ordinarystreetwearandwent throughprodigiousfeatsofmemorytoexplaintousallabout "ourtown,"apurelyimaginary placewherewomenperformed householdchoresindumbshow, andmenlikewisemowedthe lawnbysawingattheair.Two familieswereshownlivingside byside,andeventuallytheboy ononesidejumpedtheimaginaryfencetomarrythegirlon theotherside.Thethirdact broughtusdowntheyearsfor morethanadecade,andshowed usmanyofthegoodpeopleof thistown(calledGrover'sCorners,inNewHampshire,U.S.A.) nowdead,andsittingupin chairsonthestage(or,shallwe say,inacornerofthecemetery)withlargewhitewooden crossesproppedupaboveeach oneofthem.Stiffandstraight theysat,lookingneithertoleft norright,andbeingentirelyunaffectedintheapprovedmanner bythisspectacleofeternityI felltothinkingthatiftheywere alltoreciteinsolemnunison: "Wearethedead .,"etc.,etc., itwouldhavemadeanexcellent pieceofcomedy. Thisthirdact,Iknow,was meanttomoveme.Whenthe deadspoke,andespeciallywhen oneofthemre-visitedworldof thelivingandthelessonoflost opportunitieswaspunchedhome, Ishouldhavebeenstruckbythe infinitepathosofitall;butIremainedstrangelyunmoved.PerhapsthiswasbecauseIcouldn't helpreflectingwhatacheerless lotthedeadwere,andwhata poorpictureofeternityMr. Wilderhadpaintedforus.If thiswerelifeafterdeath,then theuniverseseemedstrippedof meaning,andlife,love,happiness,careforone'skinsfolk, andeveryhumanemotionceasedtohavesignificance."This world'sno.blotnorblank,"cried Browning."Itmeansintensely, anditmeansgood."Butthen Browninggothisoptimismfrom hisfiercehopeinajoyfuleternity.Now,ifthesituationhad beenreversed,ifthesedeadpeoplehadbeenshowninpossessionofineffablebliss,then theremightbesomepointin underliningtheheartlessness thatgoeshand-in-handwith thoughtlessness.

Dramaticartissofullofcomplexitiesthatanyattemptsto saywhatshouldorshouldnot bedoneonthestageareinstantlyopentoquestion.Even whatmayberegardedasthe canonsofacting-directionses tothepropermethodofturning, warningsagainstspeakingwith one'sbacktotheaudience,etc.aresometimesdeliberatelybrokenbythosewhoseexperience andmasteryenablethemtosuccessfullysettherecognisedrules atnought.Howmuchmore difficultthenisittodetermine whatshallmakeupthe"stuff ofdrama?"Whoshallsay,for example,whetheritisbetterfor amurdertobecommittedonthe stage,withallitattendanthorror,orreportedinsuchaway astostirthedeepestfeelingsof compassioninthemindsof;he audience?

Thiswasrepresentedasamercy killing.

A.:ItisquitetruethatGod aloneseesintotheheartofman, butwhatamanhaswithin showsitselfbylong,continued andconsistentconductandbehaviour.Youcouldprudently judgeofthesanctityofyour neighbourbyobservinghisoutwardactionsforaconsiderable time,underallkindsofcircumstances.Itwouldsurelybeabsurdtoholdthatnoonecould everrecogniseheroicsanctity whereitexists,andthatwemust alwaysbeindoubtofman'slife, astowhetheritisoneofextraordinaryholiness,oroneof monstroushypocrisy.Aperson canhidehisrealself,forawhile, fromalimitednumberofpersons,onparticularoccasions,but itisimpossible,inpractice,to spendalifetimeinthehidden exerciseofworksofgreatsanctitywithoutitbeingobviousto manythatheisamanofgenuiholinessandpurityofheart.

Attherecentconferenceof delegatesfromallbranchesof theCatholicYouthOrganisation,thewholeoftheprogrammewasdevotedtoanenquiryintotheattitudeofpresent-dayyoungpeopleto"Company-keeping"andtoareiterationoftheChristianidealswhich shouldgovernsuchmatters.
Aseriesofquestionshadpreviouslybeengiventodelegates whocametotheconference havingalreadydiscussedthe mattersinsomedetail.Atthe conference,delegatesbrokeup intogroupstopooltheirideas, andthenaspokesmanforeach groupaddressedthecombined meeting.
Thequestionsconsidered,andthefindingsoftheconference wereasfollow:
1.Wheredoestheordinary youngboyandgirlgettheir ideasonwhatisrightand whatiswrongincompanykeeping?
Theygetthemprincipally fromtheirimmediateseniorsfromyoungpeopleoneortwo yearsolderthanthemselves, brothersandsisters,schoolfriends,friendstheymakewhen theybeginwork.
Theyarestronglyinfluenced byfilms,magazines,novels;not excludingthecheap"pulp" novels,alsocomicsofallkinds.
Powerful,too,initsinfluence istheincessant'romantic"discussionwhichgoesonatwork, bothamongboysandgirls,the girlstalkingof"heart-throbs" and"nicelines"untiltheeasily impressedyoungstercomesto thinkthatnothinginallthe worldissoimportantasget- tingaboyfriendandhaving similar"romantic"experiences.
Theboysboastandlieabout theirgirlfriends,andharpso muchonsuchtopicsthatthe impressionableyoungsterisalmostgoadedintoanattemptto emulatethem-partlybyfearof beinglesssuccessfulthanthe rest,partlybyanalmostirresistiblecuriositytotrywhathe hearssomuchabout.
Theimportanceofenvironmentwasstressed.Ifagoodhome istocounteracttheinfluenceof work-matesorotherblind guides,theremustbecloseunderstandingbetweenyoungpeo- pleandtheirparents,especially whentheyfirstbeginwork.It wasagreedthatthisisrarely thecase.Thefaultappearsto bewithparents.Theyhave totaketheinitiativeandbring uptheirchildreninsuchaway thattheyhabituallydiscussall theirproblemswiththeirparents.Itisthecustomofhe dayforyoungpeopletoscoff atorresentparentalcontrolin themid-teens,butthisisjust whentheyneeditmost,and whenparentsshouldbemost vigilantandclosesttotheir children.
Theobviousneedisformore opportunitiesofsolidinstruction.Mostpeopleleaveschool beforetheyarequiteoldenough tobegivenpracticalinstruction onthesematters.Thosewho stayatschoolaftertheIntermediateshouldbegiventhefacts notvaguely,butbluntly.They shouldbeforewarnedindetail ofwhatanoutlooktheywill encounteronleavingschooland shownwhatChristexpects,and howtheyshouldgoaboutkeep- ingHisideals.
C.Y.O.brancheswhicharrange fortheirChaplainstogivere- gulartalksonthesetopicswere commended.Otherswereurg- edtoadoptasimilarplan. ItwasconsideredthatL:ermonsonthesetopicswoulddo mostgoodiftheygotdownto thepracticaldetailsofhow Christ'sidealsweretobeapplied innormallife.

2.Areboysorgirlsmostat faultinthematterofdeparturesfromChristianprin- ciples? Thisquestiongaveriseto muchdiscussion.Themajority opinionblamedboys,thoughnot afewthoughtgirlsmoreat fault.Ultimately,itdepnded agooddealonthepersonsandthecircumstances. Girlswereblamedbecauseso veryoften,evenwhenmisconductisfarthestfromtheir thoughts,theyblindlyfollow modernfashionsanddresswith solittlethoughttomodestythat theymakeitterriblydifficultfor youngmenintheircompanyto keepyourthoughtsofftheobvious.Furthermore,girlscan veryeasilycontroltheconduct ofanyboyfriend.Ifitdoesn't conformtothecorrectstandards theydon'thavetosubmittoit.
Againstthis,however,itwas contendedthatgirlsshouldnot havetodefendthemselves againstChristianyouths.Itis rathertheplaceoftheyoung mento virtueprotectandrespectthe anddignityofthegirls.
Itwasagreedthatmanyboys expectedacertainamountof "flirting"fromgirls,andwent lookingforit,becausetheydo notrealisethatitiswrong. Itwasagreedthatthiswasone aspectofthecommondisregard foreducation.Notmanyyoung peoplewanttodeveloptheir mindsandwidentheireducation.Theysuccumbveryoften totheinterestsandpleasures whichdon'tstirthebrainoutof itspleasantdoze.Thisseems tobethereasonwhytalks,debatesordiscussionsonreligious topicsstruggleforanaudience amongyoungpeople.Life hasn'tyethitthemhardenough tomakethemlookfarbeneath thesurface.
5.Doyoungpeoplethesedays"pairoff"attooearlyanage insteadofmovingaround longerasagroup?
Theanswertothisquestion wasamostemphaticyes.Not onlydoyoungpeople"pairoff" muchtooearly,butassoonas theydo"pairoff"thetendency isforthemtodriftawayfrom anyyouthmovementsorother groupactivityorcharitable workwithwhichtheymayhave beenassociated.

Itisanobstaclealsotocharity.Everyparishhasitsexamplesofyoungpeoplewhoneglecttopulltheirweightinparishaffairs,neglecttheirother friends,andneglecttodevelop theirownmindsandtalents, simplybecauseofa"heart throb"whomalmostcertainly theywillnotendupmarrying.
6.Areyoungpeoplewise enoughandgoodenoughto getalongwithoutanychaperoneordotheyneedany"savingfromthemselves"?
Thisprovokedlivelydiscussion.Thegeneralagreement wasthatyoungpeoplewerefundamentallywell-meaning,but lackinginthenecessarywisdomandexperiencetopilottheir owncourse.Theyneededhelp, guidanceandprotection.This shouldcomefromparents,who aretheGod-givenchaperonesof theirchildren.Toomanypar- entsabandontheirchildren spirituallyjustwhentheircare andsupervisionismostneeded -whentheyleaveschooland firststarttomaketheirwayin theworld.

Youngmenwhohavethe privilegeofhavingsistersshould notbesoanxioustoshakethem offandgoaboutwithothergirls. Moreconsiderationandmoreof thefamilyspiritiswanted amongteenagers.
Youngpeopleshouldhaveno secretsfromtheirparents.Parentsarenotspoil-sports.They are,infact,theonlypeopleinthisworldwhotakeapureun- selfishinterestintheirchildren -theonlypeoplepreparedto loveandgiveandservewithout
askinganythinginreturn.
TheRev.FatherJohnLeonard,DirectoroftheLayApostolate,saidthatheadmiredthe waytheconferencehadhandledthediscussionandthereally worth-whileconclusionsthey hadreached.Ithadbeenintended,hesaid,toincludeinthe conferencesomeconsiderationof thecorrectattitudetomarriage, inviewofthealmostdailyprominencegivenbypapersand magazinestothefalseanddangerousadviceofso-calledmarriageexperts.
Time,however,didnotpermitthediscussiontoreachthis subject,butitisintendedto holdasimilarconferencefor thepurposeinthenearfuture.
Thequalificationsthesedays fora"marriageguidanceex-pert"seemstobeanear-total rejectionoftheOommandments andtheteachingofChrist.Divorceisonlydiscussedwitha viewtomakingiteasier.So littleimportanceisattachedto themarriagebondthatitremains onlyforsomeonetoadvocate thatyoungpeopleshouldhave aweddingreceptionwithout botheringaboutanymarriage ceremonyatall.Itwould makesubsequentdivorceso muchmorepainlessandeconomical.Whenevermarriageis discussed,onlytherightsofthe husbandandthewifeareconsidered.Godisdeniedany voiceatallinthematter.Childrenarenotconsidered.Ifa desireddivorcedeprivesthem ofaproperupbringing,somuch theworseforthem.
Theproblemofwhattodo withchildrenisinanycase beingsolvedbythesimpledeviceofeliminatingthem.A schemecalled"PlannedParenthood"hasbeendevised,which isanicenameforsomething verynasty-thecompleterejec- tionofGod'splanandGod's providence.
Almostall"marriagecounsellors"or"guidanceexperts," whoseviewsaregivenprominenceinthepublicpress,have anearthlyviewofmarriage. Theyeitherdon'tknowordon't believethatitshouldbeacareerundertakenforGod;that itstrialsandobligations,its sacrificesanditsdifficulties, mustbeweighedagainstthe breath-takingdignityandimportanceattachedtoitbyGod. Itisatragedythatsomany couplesletthemselvesbescaredoffhavingchildrenwhen theyareyoung.Whenmiddle agecomestheyregretit.When oldagecomestheyweepover it,buttherearefewtodrytheirtears.Whendeathcomes itisonlytobehopedthatGod willpassamercifuljudgment onthemisguideddecisionof theiryouth-whentheythought theirownplansforthisworldmoreimportantthanGod'splan anomalyofprintingarticlesin forthenext.Papersthesedays oftenpresenttheincredible favourofbirthpreventionand articlesdeploringourdanger- ouslylowpopulationinthesame issue.
Sopowerfulisthesubtlemodernpropagandaonthissubject thatacouplewhorejoiceinall thebabiesGodchoosestosend themarelookedonasanti-social.Avirtuousgirlwhowants alargefamilybecomesthebutt ofjokesandtaunts.InEng- landrecentlyanon-Catholic Bishopwentsofarastosaythat havingalargefamilywasasocialcrime.Thissurelyisthe laststraw.
