Therewerethousandsofvehicles andpilgrimsonfoot-somehavingwalkedforfivedays.
APortuguesepriest,wihowas mosthelpful,tookustoseeJacinta'sandFrancois'sgrave,not morethan100yardsfromthe villagechurchwhichtheyattendedduringtheirlifetime.
LucyherselfisnowinaCarmeliteConventatCoimbra,butbeforesheenteredshevisitedthe spotwhereshesawourdear Ladyonthebush.Shehadno interestinanythingexceptthe spotwhereOurLadyappeared intheeast,andshe(Lucy) lookedatnothingexceptatthe skyintheeast.Wereached Fatimaintimetogetamealand thentakeupourplacesforthe candlelightprocession
The200,000,whothrongedinto Fatimaiswhollyindescribable. Onemustseethemtoappreciate them.Asyet,thereisverylittleorganisation.andthecrowds werenotundercontrol,asthey shouldhavebeen.However,we managedtogetintotheprocessionwhentheceremoniescommencedatmidnight.Bythe way,aswenearedFatima,a stormcameupwithfiercelightningandthunderandtorrentsof rain,whichturnedtheground intoaquagmire.Atmidnight Benedictionbegan,thenthe BlessedSacramentwascarried afterthethousandsofpeople hadbeguntowalk,singingthe Fatimahymn.Itwinssucha wonderfulexperiencethatIwept fromsheerjoy.Thesightof thecandleswillnoteasilybeforgotten.Themudbythistime

Thosefamilieswhicharesosituatedfinanciallythat theirdaughtersneednotwork,andyetdoso,commita graveoffenceagainstsocialjustice.Anygirlwhowilfullythrowsupahomelifefortheserfdomofacity emporium,unlessunderfinancialcompulsion,betraysher
verywomanhood.Sheismoredeservingofpitythanof censure.Ifthereisoneyokeinthemodernworld snoreghastlythananother,itistheboastoffreedomfor thewomanwhohaschosenacareer.Ifoneseeksareasonfortheunparalleledwaveofsexualismwhichis sweepingtheworld,oftheincreaseinsuicidesandor unnaturalvice,onewillfindthatoneofthemajorcontributivecausesisthatsomanymenhavebeendisplaced byfemalelabour.Finally,inthosecases,nowsounhappilyfrequent,wherewomenmustworkinindustry 4 tosupportthemselvesordependants,variousorganisationsshouldstrivetoinstitutetheprincipleofequalpay forthesexes.Thisiselementaryjusticewhereawoman isdoingthesameworkasamanwiththesameefficiency.Thereisnoattempttoconcealthatthisisa measurewhichwoulddisplacemanywomenfromindustry.Ent,ontheotherhand,itwouldmakeroomfor menwh,arewillingtomarryandwouldtendtoalleviateboththesocialandmoraldisordersof,theworld.

Theoppositetactics,ofequalityofpaymentformen andwomen,willundoubtedlydosomethingtoremove womenfromindustry,forthesimplereasonthatthepreferenceofemployersforwomenisnotbasedonsentimentalbutoneconomicmotives.Thereisnodoubt thatthenativeindependenceofwomenmakesthem ratherlesstractable,andthereforelesssusceptibletoregimentation,thanmen,thusaddingtothediscomfortof alreadyharassedproductionmanagers.Butitwould ti heunwiretohonethatanyrevolutionaryameliorationof thesituationwillarisefromthiscausealone.Rather, itisanexpedienttoassistinachangewhichcan,inthe lastanalysis,comeonlyfromanappreciationoftrue Christianvaluesbythewomenthemselves.

ThelifestoryofPereJeanis quitefascinating.Whenonly twelve,hewasattractedbythe problemofbringingreligionback totheRedworkers'masses.Born in1908inAveyron.nearRoquefort,theplacemadefamous foritscheese,hejoinedtheOrder ofSt.BenedictThiswasin 1922,andin1926hetookhis finalvows. Scottishtonguewasasauthentic asaStiltoncheese),itwouldbe difficulttosaywhetherhisperformancewasanymoreimpressivethanthatofFredricRamsay,who,astheYank,notcheda markforhimselfwhichhewill befortunateevertosurpass. HisstutteringYank,boneheaded andcasual,yetcapableofbeing stungintoanger,willgodown asaclassicintheannalsofthe IndependentPlayers,andwill foreverremainacredittohim.

BerniceDemorestbroughta verywarmtoneandplentyof youthfulspirittoherplayingof theRimsky-KorsakovConcerto. Shewasnotlackinginimaginationeither,andherrunshada brilliancethatattimesproveda littletoomuchfortheorchestra, whichdidnotalwaysmanageto endquitewithher.
PamelaKottchoseDohnanyi's' "VariationsonaNursery Rhyme."Thetroublewiththis workfromapianist'spointof view,isthattheorchestrasteals thelistener'sinterestalmostall thetime,leavingthepianistperforminghighlyvirtuosepassages unnoticed.Tobefrank,one rememberstheorchestra'svery pompousintroduction,thenthe bareintroductionofthenursery tunebythepianoin'octades, andafterthatorchestralvariationsinvariousmoods,withan elaboratepianopart.Thepianistdidherpartwell,andIthink sheWouldhaveshownhertrue valuebetterinsomeotherwork.
TheorchestraplayedanunknownandverylovelyOverture bytheEnglishcomposerArne. Thisworkmakesonewonder whyHandelshouldhaveso completelyovershadowedthis composer.Itwasmostcharminglyperformedbytheorchestra,andleftonewishingtohear moreofsuchmusic.Tschaikowski's"CapriccioItalien"isacuriousworkinwhichthecomposermanagestocombinethe broodingmelancholyoftypicallyTschaikowskianmusicwith thenoisyebullienceofthemusic ofsouthernItaly,somethingI wouldneverhavesuspectedhim ofdidInotalsoknowthathe hadquiteapassionforViennese waltzes.Theorchestradidits workwell.Theaccompanimentsworeplayedsympatheticallyandwithgoodrestraint, withoutfailingtogidethesoloistclimacticsupportwhere necessary.

Mr.DavidLilienthal,chiefof theAtomicEnergyCommission intheUnitedStates,hasrecentlyhadsomeverypertinentcommentstomakeonthe"bewitchedandjumpymen"whoputtheir wholefaithinthe"blackmagic" oftheatombomb.Suchmen, accordingtoMrLilienthal,seem toimaginethatsincetheatom bombisaweaponofincomparabledestructivepower,thisis theonlypowerthatAmericahas orneeds.
Itmustnotbethoughtthat Mr.Lilinthalisthevictimof vainimaginings.Thewhole trendofcurrentU.S.thought seestheproblemofRussianaggressionasanattackonAmerica whichisessentiallyindirect. WhatevermayhappeninChina orEuropeiscertainlyimportant totheU.S.,butonlybecause, andtotheextentthat,itinterfereswithAmericaneconomyor threatensthevaunted"American wayoflife."Andaslongasthe
U.S.believesitselftobesafe fromafrontalassaultbecauseof itssuperiormilitarystrength, thenforjustaslongitseems likelythattheU.S.willfailto makeanyrealcontributiontoa tastingpeace. Nowitmustbeemphasisedat theoutsetthatanysuperiority inarmamentheldbytheU.S.is neitherasoverwhelmingnoras permanentasmanywouldhave usthink.Theatombombisa tremendouslydestructiveweapon,butitisnotatacticalweaponcapableofwinningwarsin thetwinklingofaneye.No doubtmanylearnedarm-chair philosophersandradiocommentatorswoulddismissthisview asunscientificandunprogressive-itisnonethelesstruefor that,astheslightlybetter-informedservicechiefsandatomic scientistshaveoftenenough hinted.Notonlythat,butthere areother,lesspublicisedweaponsinfinitelysuperiorintheor-
dinarypracticalbusinessofdestroyingtheenemy'sfighting forces,andihtheseweaponsthe US.isbynomeanspre-eminent.
Again,weareoftentoldthat Russiaishopelesslyoutofthe raceinatomicandotherarmamentprogress.Inthismatter weshouldbewareofconfusing irritatingsecrecywitheffective security.The"Secrets"ofsuch thingsareseldomsecretsrelatingtofundamentalprinciples. Rathertheyaretheprecisedetailsofprocessesandinstrumentswhichachieveendswhich canbeattainedinotherways.
Infactmanyoftheseheavily guarded"secrets"areaboutas fundamentalastheexactshade ofcolourofanewlipstickrelease.
Butwtshouldnotimagine thatthequestionofU.S.militarysuperiorityistheonlyquestiontobedecidedwhenwethins. ofworldpeaceandsecurity.Nor shouldwefallintothetrapalreadyoccupiedbysomanyAmericanwritersaridspeakers-that ofimaginingthattheproblemis neithermilitarynoreconomic, butacombinationofthetwo.
Tbatisaviewpointoftenenough broadcastfromAmerica,andit maybesummarisedthus:We cannotdefeatRussiainwar withoutimpairingournational economy,andwecannotbuilda. secureandefficienteconomy whiletheRussianmenacetodetiocracyisunchecked.
Whatwecando,however,is t,,containtheRussianimperialismbyeconomicmeans,bymakingfreeanddemocraticcountries realisethatitistotheirownadvantagetoco-operatewiththe U.S.ratherthanwiththeKremlin,becausetheU.S.hasmoreto offer.ThatistheprinciplebehindtheMarshallplan,andthe morerecentprogrammeofcapitalaidtounder-developedcountries.Nowitwouldbeamistaketodecrytheseeffortsorto regardthemasuseless.Americans,unfortunately,makethe oppositemistakeofregarding themaslikelytobeveryeffectiveindeed.Timealonewill showwhetherinfactthecountriesaidedwillnottaketheir breadfromtheWestandtheir doctrinefromtheEastwithan ingratitudewhichdismaysthe latterlessthantheformer.But thefatalerroroftheWestis now,asithaslongbeen,toimaginethatvagueandpiouslongingsforpeaceonearthandgoodwilltomankindareaneffective antidoteforthevirileMarxism whichthreatensourexistence. BellocdescribedtheEnglishidea ofChristanityasa"vaguefeelingofgoodwill,andfriendliness, especiallytowardsanimals."This sortofChristianityismorelikelytosurrendertoMarxismthan toovercomeit.WemustrememberthatMarxismisaspiritualphenomenon,'ofdiabolical origin,andthatitwillbeovercomenotbyatombombs,norby carefuleconomicplanning,nor yetagainbyvagueandpious platitudesaboutfreedomanddemocracy,butbyinjectingChristianityintoaworldwhichthinks itknowswhatinrealityithas entirelyforgotten.

AnglicansaccepttheBookof CommonPrayerasthepractical ruleoftheirbeliefandworship.
TheAnglicanBishopsareforbiddentolegislateeveninmattersofdoctrineandliturgy,asis clearfromtherejectionofthe revisedversionoftheBookof CommonPrayerbytheHouseof Commonsin1927andin1928.
