Tobringaboutthishappyresult,itwillbenecessary,of course,tomakesucharrangementsaswillallowpilgrimsto approachfreelythosesacred'edifices;enablingeachtoprofess hisdevotionopenlyandwithout hindrance,andtoremainthere freefromfearanddanger.It mustalsobeconsideredobjectionablethatpilgrimsshouldsee theseplacesprofanedbysinful andworldlyentertainments, whichareassuredlyanoffenceto theDivineRedeemerandtothe Christianconscience.

Gouzenko,inCanada,Budenz,intheUnitedStates Hyde,inBritain,andthedefec tionsofvariousdiplomatsofthe countriesbeyondtheIronCurtainhaveservedmorepowerfully thananyotherfactortoswing publicopinioninthedemocracies.
ItisplainthatnowtheleadershipoftheChurchinYugoslavia, Hungary,BulgariaandRumania hasbeeneffectivelystifled,the insatiablepassionoftheSoviet forthedestructionofreligionis mountinganall-outattack againsttheleadershipofthe CatholicChurchinPolandand Czechoslovakia.Underthestrong leadershipofCardinalHlond, thePolishChurchhadtobear anever-increasingsericsofpinpricksandrestrictions,butso greatwashispersonalholdon thepeoplethatnodirectattack waseverlaunchedagainstthe personoftheCardinalorthe Church.Sincetheaccessionto theSeesofWarsawandGniezno ofArchbishopStepanWyszski, however,some months ago, therehasbeenevidencealltoo plainandpainfulofthesame conspiracyagainstreligion as hasbeentriedinneighbouring countries,Inanticipationof thisthenewArchbishopinhis firstpastoralletterwrote:"Iam notapolitician,notareformer, notamanofaction.Icomeas yourspiritualfather."Here patentlywasadeclarationthat theChurchhasnointerestin politicsassuch,andiftheusual patternofpersecutionfollowed itwouldbeclearlyaimedagainst religionandnotagainst"politicalCatholicism," Theimpendingstormwasnot longdelayed.Barely two monthsaftertheinstallationof theArchbishop,thePolishhierarchyinastrongly-wordedpastoralwarnedCatholicstoignore chargesthatpriestswereenemiesoftheState,andtodisregardallattackslevelledagainst thembytheGovernment-controlledpress.Thisfollowedthearrestofnumerouspriestsonunspecifiedcharges,andtherefusal toallowtheBishopstoseethem. Thegeneralallegationsof"antiStateactivities"werebrandedas
'ridiculous.'The Communist PartyansweredtheBishopswithinafewdays,merelyreiterating thestale,oldlieswhichthe Hierarchyhadanticipated.One memberstatedthattheCatholic Episcopate,despitethewillof thebroadmassesofthepeople, didnotwantan"understanding" withtheState.Everybody knowshowmuchregardthe CommunistPartyhasforthepopularwillandhowthenatureof any"understanding"withitinvolvesunconditionalandabject surrender. Hefurtherwarned thattheGovernmenthadthe strengthtoparalyse"allriotous reaction"-whichmeanswemay expect somemorefamous "trials."
InCzechoslovakia,anidentical techniqueisbeingemployed,but thetempoisnecessarilyslower becausetheCommunistPartyis notproperlyorganisedthereas yet.Stillthearrestsofpriests isincreasingsteadily,andthere isnodoubtthattheHierarchy isapprehensiveofthefuture.Accordingtopressreport,the VaticanRadio,inanewsbroadcast,quotedArchbishopBeran, ofPrague,asanticipatingthat theaccusationwouldsoonbe madeagainsthimofbeingan enemyoftheworkingclasses. This,however,wasdeniedthe followingdaybyaspokesmanfor theArchbishop.Howeverit maybe,itisCertaininthelight ofthefatethatbefellArchbishopStepinacand Cardinal Mindszenty,thattheArchbishop canscarcelyaspiretoescapethe chargesmadeagainsthispriests, andthathemustbepreparedto faceaslowmartyrdomoflong prisonyears,Meanwhile,it makesbitterreadingtoseeSpain excludedfromU.N.O.ongrounds oflackofdemocracy,whilethe tyrantsofhalftheworldsit sardonicallyonthebenchesof thataugustbutimpotentassembly.

JohnConroy,providedasharp contrasttothetragedywhich precededit.Inviewoftheexcellenceofthattragedy,the playersinthissecondpiecedid extremelywelltoriseabovethe levelofmediocrity.Thatthey didsowaslargelyduetothe virtuosityofPeterO'Brienwho, asLord.Withers,presentedanexcellentcaricatureoftheidle,elegantaristocracy.Heexemplifiedwhatismeantbyintelligent playing.Withoutintelligentapprehensionofwhatisrequiredin thistypeofrole,noamateur couldpossiblyapproachthestall dardreachedbyMr.O'Brien.We maraddthathewtassingularly aidedbyhisappearance.
Theotherplayersdid'well also.Itwasacaseofeveryone'shavingtodowell,forthe extravagantscript,writtenin quasi-Shakesperianstyle,would collapseinthemouthsofautomatons,Led,andtoalargeextent,Iwouldsay,inspiredby LordWithers,eachscarecrow sketchcametolifeandfellinto placeinthegeneralnonsensical pattern.JohnGillett,asPlum, broughttheplaytoanhilarious conclusionbydyingseveraltimes over-notaneasymattertoaccomplish.Inthewordsofthe song,hewasdeadbuthe wouldn'tliedown.

'KingLear'sWife','produced byShirleyOfferandCherry Gertzel,beganunpromisingly, becausethedialoguewasrushed. Whenthisfaulthadbeenremedied,theintrinsicworthofthe dramashoneforthwithpower andassurance.
Theplay,byGordonBottomley,is.inpoeticform,andunderstandingisthereforemorethan everdependentonclear,purposefulspeaking.JudithMauldon, asGormflaith,wasthefirst playertotakethisfactorfully intoaccount,andshewentonto registeranoutstandingperformance,fullofmerit,
Mr.Bottomleyhasattempted tofindabasisforShakespeare's "King,Lear."Weareshown theking'swifeonherdeathbed,hisdaughter,Goneril,onthe vergeofself-realisation,and Learhimselfatthebeginningof hispersonaltragedy-atragedy, Wenote,initiatedbyhisown acts.
PamelaSimpsonmadeabold Goneril.Physically,mentally, andmorallyshewasequaltothe task.Shewalkedandtalked andthoughtandactedaswe mightexpecthertodo.Herone mistakewassometimestalking toofast,attheexpenseofclarity.Otherwiseshewassuperb. Learwasplayedratherindif. ferentlybyJohnBastin.He didnotattainthenecessary poise,andhisspeechwasmuffled. Lear'swife,playedbyJacqueline Magee,wasamoreconvincing portrait.Minorroleswerefilled byPamelaMersh,Stephanie Stokes,NancyFowler,JuneEgglestonandFrankBoddy.
A.P.Herbert'sessayinfarce, producedbyLilaHansenand
JohnConroy,providedasharp contrasttothetragedywhich precededit.Inviewoftheexcellenceofthattragedy,the playersinthissecondpiecedid extremelywelltoriseabovethe levelofmediocrity.Thatthey didsowaslargelyduetothe virtuosityofPeterO'Brienwho, asLord.Withers,presentedanexcellentcaricatureoftheidle,elegantaristocracy.Heexemplifiedwhatismeantbyintelligent playing.Withoutintelligentapprehensionofwhatisrequiredin thistypeofrole,noamateur couldpossiblyapproachthestan dardreachedbyMr.O'Brien.We mayaddthatheWassingularly aidedbyhisappearance.
Theotherplayersdidwell also.Itwasacaseofeveryone'shavingtodowell,forthe extravagantscript,writtenin quasi-Shakesperianstyle,would collapseinthemouthsofautomatons.Led,andtoalargeextent,Iwouldsay,inspiredby LordWithers,eachscarecrow sketchcametolifeandfellinto placeinthegeneralnonsensical pattern.JohnGillett,asPlum, broughttheplaytoanhilarious conclusionbydyingseveraltimes over-notaneasymattertoaccomplish.Inthewordsofthe song,hewasdeadbuthe wouldn'tliedown.

Theconcludingitemonthe ,programmeheldparticularinterestforthesavants,foritwas writtenbythatfamousactor, DavidGarrick,andsurvivesasa relicoftheRestorationera,"The LyingValet"mayhaveended itsimportancewithitsliterary significancehaditnotbeenfor theextraordinaryingenuitydisplayedbyIvanTimothySharp, thevalet.
