Therootcause-ofstrikesandindustrialcontention-discontent-willbe removed.
Inconcertwiththosewhosupply thecapitalforproduction,theywill recapturethesenseofresponsibility whichthepresentwagesystemhas almostdestroyed.Theexcessiveaccumulationofwealthinthehandsof afewwouldbebroughtundercontrol bytheseIndustrialCouncils.For,by fixingthepriceofthegoodsproduced bytheirrespectiveindustries,they wouldeliminatetheprofiteer;byfixingthedividendspayableannuallyto shareholders,theywouldsuppressthe madgreedofmoneyandplacethe rightsoftheworkerbeforethereaping ofprofits,asjusticedemands;byplanningproduction,bothastoquantity
andquality,wastewouldbereduced andsecuritywouldbeattainedasto marketsthroughthestandardofthe goodsproduced.Further,undercooperativeownership,theworkerswould beabletoplantheirownsocialservices,voluntarilyfinancedoutofthe wealthproducedbytheirownlabour. Thustheycouldachievesecuritywithoutadiminutionofpersonaldignity andindependencesuchasStatesocial servicesmustnecessarilyinvolve.In additiontheywouldalsogreatlycurb thegrowthofbureaucracyandprevent furtherusurpationsofpowerbythe politicalmachine.

ThefallacyoftheCodbenitethesis wasthatitpaidnoattentiontothe necessityoftheconservationofthe soil.Itaskedonlyofthecornthat appearedinitsmarkethowmuchit hadcosttoproduceatthemoment, andcarednothingwhetherithadbeen producedbymethodsthatruinedthe landorbymethodsthatpaidattention toitsconservation.Itisforthe shortrunmuchcheapertoneglectthe precautionsthatarenecessarytoconservetheland,andtheobversetothe nineteenth-century'scryofcheapfood wasthatthefood-producersinthenew indebtedlandsallovertheworldhad toproduceincompetitionagainstone anotherforthatcheapmarket,and thatthereforeeventhoseofthemwho werewiseenoughtounderstandthe suicidalnatureofthepolicyhadno alternativebuttoneglectprecautions inarageforimmediatecheapness.

WhatisneededIstherootdestructionofthiswholeodioushabitofmind whichhasbuiltitselfupon,Valternationsbetweeninsultingthearmerand thesoldierinthehourofapparentsecurity,andsquealingtothemtosave themintheirhoursofnecessity.
Thefarmermusthaveaguaranteed priceforhisproducts,guaranteednot foroneyear,butforagenerationto come,and,sinceifagriculturebecomes thesportofPartypolitics,itwillinevitablyloseowingtotheaccidentthat therearemoretownvotersthanrural voters,thereforethepoliticalPartiesif theywishtosavethecountrymust discoveramongthemselvesthewisdom tohaveanagreedagriculturalpolicy whichtheycanbetweenthemkeepout ofthePartyarena.
Vaguetalkaboutahigherstandard oflivingissofulloffollyastobeat suchatimeasthisalmosttreasonable, foritobscuresthewholeissue.The wholeissueisthatatanymomentprior tothemomentofultimatecatastrophe itispossibletohaveanimmediatelygreaterabundanceofconsumablegoods bypursuingapolicyoffollyandneglectingthewiseprecautions.But thereisnorealquestionofourenjoyingthiscomplicatedmechanisedexistencepermanently.Thatisnotthe issue.Theissueisbetweenthesimplerlifeandextinction.Itisnot necessarytodepriveourselvesofeverymechanicalcontrivanceandtogo backentirelytothelifeofWilliam Morris'"NewsFromNowhere."There isnoreasonwhyweshouldnotmakea carefulselectionofwhichsuchcontrivancesarereallyaidstothegoodlife, butwemustmakesuchaselection,forifwearetodevelopahealthily ed farming,thenonlyasmallprortion ofourlabourwillbeavailableforthe factories.
And,sincethisisarevolutiondemandingaradicalchangeinpeople's habitsratherthanmerelyafewGovernmentregulations,itcannotbeaccomplishedinlessthanageneration. Thereforeitisnotdesirable,thoughit mayindeedproveunavoidable,thatwe shouldsuddenlydepriveourselvesof allforeignfood.Suchacalamity wouldbeasruinoustothelandofEnglandasherpanicdemandshavebeen tothelandoftheworld.Itisessential,ifitbepossible,thatthechange shouldbeagradualone,noristhere verymuchhopethattherevolution willmeetwithsuccessunlessitistied inwithaverymuchdeeperrevolution.
Veryfewpeoplecareverydeeply whattheworld,inthevague,willbe likeaftertheyaredead.Whyshould they?Buttheydocaredeeplywhat sortofaworldandalivelihoodthey willleavetotheirchildren.
Thereforenoagriculturalrevolution islikelytomeetwithsuccesssaveina worldwhichhaslearntoncemoreto honourheredityandthefamily-a worldinwhichinthenormalwaychildrenfollowthecallingsoftheirfathers inthesameplacesastheirfathers.Nor, itisobvious,isevensucharevolution likelytosucceedunlessitinitsturnis tiedwiththeyetdeeperrevolutionofa widespreadreturntoreligion.

Forthatportionofgeneraltaxation paidbyCatholicswhichgoestoeducationgrantsisspentonasystemwhich isinimicalnotonlytoCatholicismbut toourbestnationalinterests.In otherwords,secularismintheschools is secularismgraduallybutsurelyundermining inthelegislatures,and aboutafifthofthecapitalemployedin theprocessiswrestedunjustlyfrom theCatholiccommunity.Sothat, whateverlevityamanmayfeelatthe momentaboutpayingtaxationatwar ratesisnotincreasedfortheCatholic taxpayerbyreflectionontheeducation grants.Anditwillbeinaspiritvery farfromlevitythathewilldemand redressofthislong-termgrievanceas anintegralpartofpost-warreconstructionplans.Actuallythelong-sufferingofCatholicsoverthisparticular issueshouldbethefinalcompelling argumentfordenominationalschools. ForCatholicsareboundbytheirreligiontoobeyallthejustlawsofthe State. Yetinthisinstancetheyhavebeen preparedtoobeyanunjustarrangement,norhavetheyemployedtheir schoolsinsubvertingtheGovernment. ButitshouldbemadeclearthatIdo notdenytherightofthegovernment toageneralsupervisorycontrolofanythingandeverythingpertainingtothe commongood.Thatisthefundamentalfunctionofgovernment.What isobjectionableisthattheGovernmentshouldundertakeanythinginthe wayofasocialservicedirectlywhen suchamattercouldbeadequately handledbyco-operativeanddecentralisedmeans.Ihavealreadycriticised theproposednationalhousingscheme onthesegrounds,becauseIseesucha projectdevelopinghereaselsewhere intheworldintogreatuglyblocksof workers'flatswhichwillbeslumsin ourowngeneration.SimilarlyIprotestagainstexclusiveGovernmental controlofaboriginesandhalf-castes. AtfirstitmightseemthathereGovernmentcontrolhadastrongcase,becauseitisacharacteristicoftheseunfortunatebrothersofoursthatthey cannotwellfendforthemselves.They aredefencelessandexploitable,andto ourshametheyhavebeenandareexploitedevenunderGovernmentsupervision.Ifgovernmentisnowpermittedtomonopolisethefield,itisnot pleasanttoanticipatetheresults.For thisisamatterwhichsimplydoesnot lenditselftotheimpersonalandun-

Averypleasantevening,whichtook theformofafarewellparty,wasrecentlyspentattheNewNorciaHostel.Theoccasionwasthedeparture ofMrs.E.Hogan,whohasbeenin chargeoftheHostelforthepast13 years.Thepartyengagedinbridge. gamesandcompetitions,andthese formsofentertainmentprovidedan enjoyablepreludetoamostenjoyable supper,whichwasservedinthedining roomoftheHostel.Prideofplace onthesuppertablewasheldbya largebeautifullytieredcake,decorated with13dovesandbluebirdsforMrs. Hogan's13years'residenceatNew Norcia,andsymbolicofpeaceandhappinessforherfuturelife.Inapleasingspeech,Mr.D.EdgarmadeapresentationtoMrs.Hogan,consistingof atravellingcushionandfittedhatbox. Thefinalitemwasahumoroussketch, "TitforTat,"intwoacts.Thefirst showedMasterBryanJohnsonundergoingvariousinconveniencesinthebarber'schair,whileMasterPeterWall stuffedhisclient'smouthwithsoapto preventprotests.Thesecondscene showedMasterBryanhavinghisown backonthebarberashesatinthe dentist'schairandunderwentvarious formsoftorture.Thesetwoboys wereexcellentintheirparts,andore. ditisalsoduetotheirassistants, MastersJohnKelly,asthenurse,and MasterFrankAndersonasthebarber's assistant.
Altogethertheperformanceanddisplaywereexceptionallygoodandacredittotheboysandtheirteachers.His ExcellencytheLieut'Governor,Sir JamesMitchell,wasamongthedistinguishedguestswhoenjoyedtheperformance.

OntheeveningofWednesday,July 30,theseniorboysofSt.LouisJesuit School.Claremont,entertainedtheir parentsandfriendsattheRepertory Theatre.Beforeahighlyappreciative audiencetheyactedtwoshortplays,"TheBishop'sCandlesticks,"byNormanMcKinnel;and"TheWill,"byJ. M.Barrie.Equallyappreciated-andequallydeservingofappreciationweretheselectionschosenbytheOrchestraofLoretoConvent,Claremont, toprecedeeachpiece.
Onegoestoschoolentertainments preparedtoallowformuch;toexcuse much-lackoffinishinstaging,incostuming,inacting,indictioneven.Yet intheseplaystherewaslittletocall forapology.Thetheatreitselfput oneateasefromthebeginning:homelyandcomfortable;nottoobig,and nottoosmall,butcosyand"intimate" -thesortoftheatre,infact,thathas donesomuchtorestorethelegitimate stagetoitsproperhighplace:aplaylovers'theatre.Andfromthefirst sweepoftheconductor'sbatonthe feelingofcomfortandwell-beinggrew; throughouttherewasnoharshnoteto disturbit,noawkwardpause,nonaggingfearthatallwasnotwell.
This,itwillbesaid,isnocriticism. Anditisnoteasytocriticisesosatisfyinganentertainment;foritsveryremembrancebringsbacksomethingof theenjoymentofthethingitself,so thatonewouldratherrepeatitall againinmindthananalyseandbreak itup. Topickoutsomeoftheyowgactors forspecialpraisewouldbeRILdious; allweresogood.Few,Ithink,will easilyforgetMasterFrankQuinlivan's portrayalofthesaintlyBishop;or MasterWarrenLucas,astheConvict whomhebefriended.MasterJohn Byrne'sstudyofEmilyRoss(in"The Will")wasoneofthebestpiecesof schoolboyactingIhaveseen;though herhusband(playedbyMasterBrian O'Dea)andthelawyers.fatherand son(MasterJosephRussellandKevin Edwards),arelessvividlyrememberedonlybecausetheircharactersare lessvivid."TheWill"issetinthree periods,underQueenVictoria,King EdwardVII,andhislateMajestyKing GeorgeV:andtheseyoungactorsaged well.Theiracting-theirchangeof mannerandappearance-wasalmost professionallyperfect: whoknowstheplaywillrealisehow ambitiousaprojectitwastopresent oneofSirJamesBarrie'slittlemasterpiecewithacastofunpractisedschoolboys.AsIsaidinthebeginning,one camepreparedto"makeallowances": andwentawayfeelingveryhumblefor havingsosatinjudgment.Though thereisonelittlecriticism:partsofthe dialogueof"TheWill"werespokentoo quickly:onecaughtitall;butscarcelyhadtimetorelishit.Notthatit wasrushed,notthatitwaslost;but, well,itmighthavebeenevenbetter: itwassogoodthatonemissedthat finestandmostsubtlebeauty-which notonlyschoolboyactorsfailstogive us. Whatoftheminorcharacters?Persome,Marie,andtheGendarmes,in "TheBishop'sCandlestick"(Ma_*.rs RobertChristie,WalterGardner,Peter Henderson,andIanTreasure);'the threeClerks(MastersJohnAatill,WilliamBarbour,andDavidWhite),in "TheWill."Theyarenolessworthy ofpraise;fortheyremembered(what professionalactorssometimesforget) thattheywereminorcharacters,and theyplayedtheirpartswithoutostentation,withoutanyattempttosteal thestage.Onefelt(asoneshould) thatthoughtheywereherebutfoils totheirleaders,otherplayscouldbe cwipriatltsenwheretheywouldbetheprinAnyonewhohashadtodowiththe stagewillknowhowmuchworkwent tothepreparationoftheseplays:the trialsanddoubtsofrehearsal,thebustleandanxietyoffstage.Thisknowledgecanonlyaddtoonesappreciationoftheentertainment.

Thatmovementtowardsgovernmentalcontrol.andhencecentralisation,ofsociallifewhichisgaininggroundsorapidlyinAustraliainrecentweeks,isinversiveoftrueorderandrepugnantto Catholicideals.Ithas,inaveryshorttime,broughtforthathousandmanifestationsallequallyfacileandallpointingtotheutter intellectualbankruptcyofthewould-besocialreformers.Some wouldabolishtheStateParliaments,whereastheobvioussolution ofover-governmentistoridthelegislatureofeconomicembarrassmentbygivingself-governmenttoindustry,andwhilelesseningthe numericalstrengthofthecentralexecutive,toincreasethepowers oflocalgovernment.Butthereisnoconsistencyeveninthepolicyofcentralisation.WithinafewdaystheFederalGovernment proposestotakeovercompletecontroloftheproduction,distribution,supplyandconsumptionofcoal(aremarkablecoincidental likenesstotheLabourPartyobjective!),buttheproposaltonationalisetheheavysteelindustrieswhichareabsolutelycomplementarytoandinterdependentoncoal,causesthePrimeMinisterhimselftocomeoutinprotest!Intheonecaseheregardsthe bureaucratsoftheCivilServiceasheaven-sentsavioursofthewar effort,andthecommongood,butintheothertheywouldbe"absoluteamateurs messingabout."Itdoesn'tseemtofollow.
Itisgrimlyamusingthatprivatemonopolyisalwaysdefended onthegroundsofefficiency.Thewordinthiscontextpresumablymeanstheabilitytoproducewealthirrespectiveofwhosepocketsitfinallyreposesin.Therealtestoftheefficiencyofany systemshouldbeitsabilitytodistributewealth.Butinwhatever sense"efficiency"isdefined,itisdifficulttovisualisehowitisgoing tobeservedmerelybyachangeoverfromprivatetopoliticalmonopoly.Itisbarelypossiblethattheworkerswillsharemoreequitablyinthewealththeyproduce,thoughFederalGovernmentsover thepasthalf-centuryhavenotexhibitedanyspecialsolicitudefor therightsoflabour.Itispossiblethatthepresentheadlong plungetowardssocialismwillachieve"socialsecurity."Butso didtheoutrightslaveryofpaganRome.Therearemanyangles ontheideaof"security,"foramanmaybesecurefromwant butalsosecurefromeconomicfreedom.Inotherwordshemay be"secured"inthegripofsomethingfromwhichhecannever breakaway.Itisnotsecurityalone,orevenprimarily,thatour modernproletariatneeds.Itiseconomicfreedom.Undersocialismasunderslaveryonecanfindpoliticalstabilityandsocialsecurity.Butstabilityandsecurity,plusfreedom,canonlybeachieved inoneway-bythepersonalownershipofwell-distributedproductiveproperty.* * * *

Modernwomancanbedescribedasonewhogoesaboutina perpetualstateofundress.Thisisnotthedefinitionofarabid anti-feminist,norofasatiricalhumorist,buttheconsideredjudgmentofthelateHolyFather,PiusXI.Inhisencyclicalonpostwarevils,hedenouncedthelevityamongwomenandgirls,especiallyonmattersofdancesanddress,whichhadgonebeyondall bounds."Theworldisactuallygoingbacktobarbarism,"hedeclared,addingthatitisnow'ImpossibletodistinguishtheMagdalenesfromtheMaries."Inareportjusttohand,hissuccessor, PopePiusXII,alsosoundsagravewarningagainstthemodern tendencytowardsimmodestyindressfashions,andcallsonthe faithfultojoinbattleforpurity.For,asthingsare,itisandwill notbepreservedwithoutastruggle.Itisonlytooevidentthat sinisterinfluencesareatworkdeliberatelystrivingtodemoralise ouryouths,especiallygirls,andbringaboutthedestructionofcivilisation,morals,andtheChurch.Thepresentpeakofdisgusting literature(althoughtheHolyFatherhasbrandedbadbooksas "moredeadlythanbombers"),formsbuttheupperpartofthat treacherousicebergonwhichthepurityofsomanyyoungsoulsare wrecked.Byfarthegreaterpartofthismenace,andthatthemore harmful,liesconcealedbeneaththereassuringbalmofuniversal fashion.Butperhapsthecounter-offensivemaybestbeginwith theblatantpornography,andthosepublicmenwhohavefearlesslystruckthefirstblowsinthisdirection,notablytheMayorsof NewYorkandofBuenosAires,meritthegratitudeofChristians throughouttheworld.MaywesuggestthathereinPerththere isatleastonecentrallysituatedestablishmentwhosewindows mightjustasefficiently,andasurgently,be"cleanedup."
TheHolyFather'spleaisrelayedtousatatimelyrent, whenwearepreparingforthatgreatandprincipalfeastofMary, theMotherofPurity.IntheAssumption,whichoccurs'onFriday,wecelebratethefinalexaltationoftheimmaculatebodyofthe BlessedVirgin.PerhapswetendtothinkofOurLadyovermuchastheLadyofSorrows;orratherweneglectthisfactthat evennowshereignstriumphantQueenofHeaven,everreadyto grantvictorytoourcause,butparticularlyinthisbattleforpurity. Andjustnowweareindireneedofassistance.Forthistimethe seducersofyouthhavenotheldtheirfireforthehysteriaofpostwaryears.InAustraliaatleastthebattleisalreadyon.The exposureofthemoralsofouryoimgmenperformingmilitary duties,ofwhichthegratuitousissuanceofcontraceptivesisbuta symptom,hasbeentrenchantlydenouncedbymembersofthehierarchy.ThePopehimselfwarnsouryoungwomenagainst"the loweringmannersandfashionsofacorruptworld."Ofcourse peoplewillsaythatacertainstyleofdressismorecomfortable. "Canyounotfindinyourheartsthecourageandthestrengthto sacrificealittlecomforttopreservethepurityandthesupernatural lifeofyoursoul?"HisHolinesspleads.Fashions,hestates,often beginwithwomenofdoubtfulrepute."Butletthefashiononce beadoptedbypeoplewhoarereallyabovesuspicion-andthe fashionisout.Itspreadslikefireinaforest."TheresponsibilityoftheCatholicinthematterofscandal-givingispatent.This crusadedoesnotentailarevivalofpuritanism,northecurtailment oflegitimatediversion,butitdemandsthatouryoungpeoplebea bulwarkofmodestyinasocietywherepublicmoralityistottering. AsuperbexampleofwhatcanbeachievedinthisregardwasmanifestintheCatholicPatrioticBallheldlastweek.Notonlydress andbehaviour,buttheveryatmosphereinwhichthefunctionwas conductedborethehallmarkofareallyCatholicdecorum,which wasreadilyappreciatedbythelargeandrepresentativegathering. Theceremonyofareligiousreceptionaffordsusaveryexcellentopportunityforsomesalutaryreflection.Becauseweareaccustomedtoconsider thereceptionofayoungladyintoareligiousOrderassomethingthathappensquitefrequently,weareproneto takesuchoccasionsandtheaccompanyingceremoniesverymuchfor granted.Eventhoughwemaybe broughtintoclosecontactwiththose wholivethelifeofareligious,inthe everincreasingtempoofeverydaylife weforgetwhataretheprincipalmotiveswhichinducedsomanytorenouncetheworldandallthingsworldly.Therefore,onanoccasionsuchas thisitwouldbewelltoexaminethe reasonswhysomanyhaveembraced thelifeofareligious,fortheceremony ofreceptionwhichwearewitnessing veryadequatelyportraysthereasons whysomanytakethisstepinvolving therenunciationofallthingswhich theworldholdsdear.

Thatlove,whichHewishesalltoimitateinsofarasitishumanlypossible bytheaidofDivineGrace,isthemotivewhichimpelledsoulstofollowin thepathofself-abnegation.Thisis thelovewhich,intheearlydaysofthe Church,fortifiedthemartyrsofboth sexesandofallclassestowithstandthe barbarousonslaughtsofpaganism,and whichfinallytriumphedoverallobstacles.Thisisthelovethathasenabledmen,women,andevenchildren toovercomealltemptations,andeven toforfeittheirverylivesratherthan betraytheirLordandMaster.Itis thelove,mydearSisters,whichhasled somanytopractiseinanheroicway alltheevengelicalvirtues,andwhich finallyhasbroughtthemtothetriumphofthehonoursoftheAltar.That thislovemayconsumetheheartof you,dearSister,whoareofferingyour lifetoGodsoastofollowinthefootstepsofHisDivineSon,isourfervent wishandheartfeltprayer.
Theceremonyofreceptionis,asI havealreadysaid,symbolicofarenunciationoftheworldandallitholds dear.Itis,therefore,ofparamount importancethatthosewhowishto practisetheevangelicalcounselsmust notonlyforsakeallthings,butmust modeltheirlivesonthatoftheirDivineRedeemer.Thislife,asOurDivineLordassuresusinthepagesof HolyWrit,callsforacompletesurrenderoftheirlives,theirtalentsand theirattainments,totheendofpromotingGod'sgreaterhonourandglory andtheirownsanctification.Our DivineLord'swordsonthispointare unmistakablyclear.Wereadthemin thefourteenthchapterofSt.Luke's Gospel,verses26-27:"Ifanymancome toMeandhatenothisfatherand motherandwifeandchildrenand orethrenandsisters,yea,andhisown lifealso,hecannotbemydisciple. Andwhosoeverdothnotcarryhis crossandcomeafterMe,cannotbemy disciple.'ThelawofChristdoesnot allowustohateevenourenemies, muchlessourparents:wemustbein suchadispositionofsoulastobewillingtorenounceandpartwitheverything,howevernearanddeartous, thatwouldkeepusfromfollowing Christ.
Theworld,havingadifferentsense ofvalues,failstorealisehownecessaryalifemodelledonthatofOur DivineSaviourcallsforsuchselfrenunciationandself-denial.Itcalls itfoolishness.Butwe,whohave FaithanimatedbyCharity,andinspiredbyDivine'Hope,realiseitsutmostimportance.Listentothegreat St.PaulinhisepistletotheCorinthians,chapter1,verses21-23:"For seeingthat,intheWisdomofGod,the worldbywisdomknewnotGod,it pleasedGodbythefoolishnessofour teachingtosavethemthatbelieve. ForboththeJewsrequiresignsand theGreeksseekafterWisdom-butwe preachChristcrucified-untotheJews astumblingblockanduntotheGentilesfoolishness."

ThelateMrs.Brownerhadbeensufferingforsometimefromhearttrouble,butnoonesuspected,muchless themembersofherfamily,thattheend wassonear.
Shewasadevotedandaffectionate wifeandmother,kindtoallwhoneededherhelp,workeduntiringlyfor ChurchandConvent,andalthoughshe hadgoodshareofupsanddownsalong theroadoflife,shehadalwaysabright smile,acheeryword,andahelping handforeveryone.Shepossessedio amarkeddegreethecharacteristicso' hospitalityandwarm-heartedness. largenumberofpeoplewhoattended thefuneralatsuchshortnoticewas sufficientproofoftheesteeminwhich shewasheldbyallsectionsofthecommunity.Shewasasincerea,e1genuineCatholicandaferventmemberof theSacredHeartSodality,ifwhich shewasafoundationmember.wasalwayspresentatthemonth)}meetings andHolyCommunion,aswellason theFirstFridays,towhichshehada specialdevotion.

Thebesttrainingfordevelopment willlieinlanguagework,language beingthecommonanduniversalprerogativeofman,andthemeansby whichheexpressesthought.Accurateexpressionthenwillbeafirstessentialofthechild,forinthegreatermasteryofhistoolsliesthemoreperfect workofthecraftsman.Grammarand synt9x.'*hichwillincludewritingand spellinqmustreceiveconstantattention. ndifwewantaccurateexpressionwemustnotleadtheclasstoo fast,keepingratherwithintherangeof itsexperience,andgraduallywidening thatrange;butneverlaunchinginto toodeepseas,forindoingso,thereis gravedangerthatwordswillbedivorcedfromthingsinthechild'smind,and thattheworldhelivesinwillbesunderedfromtheworldhethinksabout.
Ordinarysimpleexperiencesofchildhoodwillprovidethechildwithample matterforformingjudgments,andin formulating'thesejudgments,thechild islearningtodiscriminateandmake affirmationsaboutthings-affirmationsthatcanalwaysbecheckedby actualexperience.Heistherefore exercisinghisintellect,andatthesame timekeepingintouchwithreality.He isalsoconsciousofgraduallymasteringtheworldabouthim,atfirstonly alittleworld,butaworldwhosemarginsfadeforeverandforeverashe moves.
Again,wecannotmovetoorapidly, crammingthemindwithfactsitcannotgrasporassimilate.Habitsof careful,accuratethoughtwillnotcome withthemereaccumulationoffacts. Wewanttotrainamindabletohandle theordinarysituationsoflife,tomould afaculty,toperfectapower,sothat thoughtmustbekeptwithinthe child'sexperiences.Wewillnotexpectyoungchildrentospendmostof theirtimewithstrange,far-offthings; butratherwiththingswithwhichthey arefamiliar.Thusandthusonlywill wegivethemaconfidentmind:amind weliitoundedonreality.
Later,inthesecondaryschool,we turnourattentiontobeautifulspeech andwriting,topoetryandrhetoric. Whenthemindhasbeenwelldevelop. ed,whenithasachievedaccuracyand beautyofexpression,whenithas becomeaccustomedtojudging,and whenithasbecomesureandconfident-when,inshort,itisreadytodirectitsenergiestoonestudyoranother-thenwemaythinkofspecialisation.Butuptotheageofsixteen yearsweconcentratenotoninformation,butonformation,althoughmuch informationwillbegleanedbythe way.
Toguageourprogressweobserve thepupil'sprogressinreasoning;in clarity,accuracyandbeautyofthought andexpression.Theidealtestisthe essay,involvingasitdoestheorderly developmentofatrainofthought, wherejudgmentandselectionarein playallthetime,inarrangingthepresentationofthefacts,andinselecting andobservingthefactstobepresented. Thisexerciseofjudgmentandselectionisthebesttrainingthemindcanget-themind,whichistheintellect, thebridgebywhichwecrosstothe outerworldofotherpersonsandother things,andbywhichothersenterinto ourlittleworld.Itisthefacultyby whichwegraspandmakeourownthe outsideworld;andbywhichwebecomethatotherworld,sothatallexperiencebecomespartofus,notmerelypassively,bymerereception,but positivelybyactiveassimilation.

Theywouldhethelosersoftheirtemporalglorysoon,andtheirverypurposeofexistencewouldbeeternally endangered.
Istherenotsomethingforustogain fromthisChrist'sgrief?To-dayChrist's apostlesmayhewellreceived.But leadersdonotwantreligion-religion asplannedbyChrist,theSonofthe LivingGod,tobethecentralthemeof dailylife.
WhyThisOppositionFromLeaders?
Christians,Catholicsaretaughtby St.Paul"tobesubjecttohigherpowers.Forthereisnopowerbutfrom God,andthosethatare,existbyGod's arrangement.Wherefore,hethatresisteththepower,resisteththearrange. mentofGod,andtheythatresistshall bring The rulerisGod'sMinisterforgoodinthe' regard."
OurleadersofStatehavearightto everyChristian'sobedienceandsubmission,whentheythemselvesrepresentinpurelyearthlyconcernsthe LordandMasterofall.Peoplemay electleaders.Peopledon'tgiveauthoritytorule.Thatauthorityis fromGod,andourleadersareanswerabletoGod.PopeLeoXIIIhasput thisclearly:"Thosewhoaretobeset intheplaceofpowercan,onoccasion, bechosen,infullaccordancewithCatholicteaching,bythewillandjudgmentofthecommunity.Butthe effectofthatchoiceissimplytomark outtheruler-nottogivehimauthoritytorule;itdoesnotdelegatethe SupremePower,butdeterminesthe personthatshallwieldit."
Butthequestionnowcomes:Dothe leadersofthepeopleaccepttheirauthorityfromGodandruletheState accordingtoHisteachingandCommandments?Atthemomentweare fightingaworldwarforspiritualprinciplesandreligiousfreedom.Willour leadersseeklightfromChrist'sVicar onreligiousprinciples,evenasthey seeklightfromthoseskilledinthelaw onmattersofpurelyStateaffairs? There'stherub.Ourleadersmustnot forgetthateverymanhas,besideshis temporalwelfare,aneternalwelfareto secureaswell.
Ifwearegivenbyourleaderslaws andinstitutionsbasedonGod'sCommandmentsandonjusticeandfret:km interpretedbyChrist'sVicar.thenour leaderswouldfindthattheChurchis morekeenthantheStateforthepromotionofjustdealingamongstthe citizensandtheestablishmentofthat degreeofpublicworshipwhichis necessaryforcivicwell-being.Agood Christiancanbethebestatizen.And weChristianCatholicsshouldthrow ourselvesheartilyandinnumbersinto thelifeoftheStatetoleaventhatlife andleaditintohealthychannels.
Willourcitizensofwealth,power, influenceandprogressseekfirstthe KingdomofGodandTilejusticeinthis ourday,forthething-ithatarefor ourpeace?Orwilltheylovethe gloryofmenmoret5-anthegloryof God?Ifthelatter,Christstillweeps.
And,enteringintotheTemple,He begantocastthemoutthatsoldtherein,andthemthatbought,sayingto them:"Itiswritten:Myhouseisthe houseofprayer.Butyouhavemade itadenofthieves."
Notonlythewonderfulbuildingof theTempleofJerusalemismeantby Christ'sactionrelatedthisday,but
thesoulofeachoneofus-theTemple oftheHolyGhost.Theheartand soulofeachChristian,seekingthe thingsthatareforourpeace,should beatempleofprayer.Eachoneof usbaptisedinChristJesusmustlike HisDivineMasterbeaboutHis Father'sbusiness.Whateverbeour callingorprofessioninlife,wemust respondtoGod'swayoflivingour dailylife.GodisourCreator.He isourFather.HeisALL:everything tous,andwemustmakeeveryefforttoseekfirstHisKingdomandHisjus- tice.Todothisweneedtobemen ofprayer.

ItistheGovernment'splain-dutyto guaranteeatleastthebasicwageto recruitstorelievetheinjusticewhich presseswithincreasingseverityon working-classhomes.For,asa"CatholicWorker"contributorpointsout, aGovernmentthatfailstopaythe basicwagetorecruitsiswagingnothing lessthaneconomicwaronAustralian homes.
LetmeassureyouthatIhavenot grownlukewarminthecauseofCatholicAction,whatevertittle-tattlemakes out.ButwhenwecelebratethefiftiethanniversaryofLeo's"Workers' Charter,"andhaveaforthrightstatementfromtheEpiscopalCommitteeon "JusticeNow!"throughthefamily wage,andstilldonothing,Iconfess toaslighttemperatureunderthecollar.Andallthisinthefaceofaparticularlyblatantanduniversalapplicationofinjustice,newlyperpetratedandbytheGovernment.

Iamnoexpertinthesematters,so perhapsIhadbetterquote.
"Lemaitre'stheoryisthattheuniverseasweknowitistheresultofan explosionthatoccurredsometenbillionyearsago.Atthattime,ashe thinks,allthematerialnowintheuniverse-thedistantspiralnebulae,the starsofourownMilkyWay,thesun anditsplanets,includingourown earth-wasconsolidatedintoonemass, asortofgiganticsuperatom.Then thesuperatomexplodedandtenbillionyearslaterwefindtheuniverseof to-day. i

OnereasonIwouldn'tdaretosayI believeitordon'tbelieveitisthatit stunsmyimaginationandparalyses myintelligence.Icannotvisualiseit, letaloneappraiseit.
ButeverytimeIreadofascientific theorythatpurportstoexplainhow theuniversecametobeasitis,Ithank Godthatreligiousfaithiseasierthan scientificfaith.IfIhadtobelieve asaconditionofsalvationsomeofthe thingssciencecallsuponitsadherents toaccept,IamafraidIwouldlosemy soulbecauseofscepticism.
ScientistsDon'tGoFarEnough.
Anotherthoughtalsorushesupto thesurfaceofconsciousnesswhenI hearorreadoftheseexplanationsof howtheuniverse,inparticularthat tinyfragmentoftheuniversewhich wecalltheworld,cameintobeing.My complaintisthatthescientistsdon't gofarenoughback.Iamnotnow referringtothegoodAbbe.AsaCatholicpriesthebelievesincreation. Butsupposewetaxesomeoneelsewho acceptstheLemaitretheoryanddoes notbelieveincreation.Hecommenceswith"allthematerialnowin theuniverse,"the"spiralnebulae,"the "sunandtheplanets"andallthe rest.Hestartswithallthatmaterial "consolidatedinonemass."Butwe non-scientificchapswanttoknowhow theoneconsolidatedmasscameinto being.Diditjustappearoneday?It wasnotthereandthenitwasthere? Thatwouldn'tbegoodscience.That wouldbemagic.Theprestidigitator doesn'treallyproducerabbitsand paperflowersandpigeonsoutofahat. Stilllessoutofnothing.Ifhedidn't bringthemintothetheatrewithhim orsendthemin,theywouldn'tbethere whenhewantedthem.
Now,whetheritisarabbitora paperflowerorapigeonora"vast massofconsolidatedmatter,"wewant toknowwhobroughtitin.Wethink weknow.WespellthatWhowitha capitalW.Ifsomeonesays,"No, therewasn'tanyWho,"weask,"Well, then,howdidtheconsolidatedmassof mattergetonthestage-thestageof theuniverse?"
Wedon'tknowagreatdealabout science,butweknowthatnothing comesfromnothing-Andweknow thatmagicis"thebunk"asascientific explanation.Youcannotexplainthe universebymagic.Ratherthando thatweresorttotheonlyalternativecieation.CreationisimpossiblewithoutaCreator.Andthereyouare.
Also,itdoesn'tdoanygoodtofling abignumberatus.Ifascientistsays "Tenbillionyearsago,"hedoesn'tfaze us.Timewaswhenwewereawedby billions.Butnowadayswehearof billionsofdollarswithoutbattingan eyelash.Ifbillionsofdollarsdon't giveusaheartflutter,neitherdobillionsofyears.Iftheytellusthata bigexplosiontookplacetenbillion yearsago,weonlyask,inourstupid way,"Werethereotherbillionsof years"beforethosetenbillionyears?"
Andwhentheyanswer,"Sure,billions andbillionsandbillions,"wegoonto ask,"Whydidtheexplosiontakeplace onlyyesterday,sotospeak?"Ten billionyearsagoisyesterdayifthere werethousandsofbillionsofyears beforethetenbillions.
