ThedivorcelawinFrancehasbeen alteredbyarecentdecree.Ingiving somedetails,VaticanRadiosaidthe reformjltbewelcomedthoughit doesnotasfarassomemightwish.

Thenewlawdoesnotsuppress divorce,butmarriageistoberegarded assomethingholy,anddivorceisto bethelastremedy.Thejudgemust trytoreconcilethepartiesandmay imposeadelayoftwoyears.Divorce isforbiddenforaperiodofyearsafter thebeginningofmarriedlife,theprovisionistobemadeforwivesabandonedbytheirhusbands.

TheCatholicPressofFrancehasreceivedthenewmeasurefavourablyas farasitgoes.

Speakingoftheprogressofdivorce inFrance,VaticanRadiosaidthere were11,000divorcesin1906and15,000 in1915.From1884to1910morethan 250,000Frenchmarriageshadbeendissolved. In1921therewere32,000divorces andtheyearlyaverageforthepostwarperiodshowedthatthemoraltone ofthepeoplehadbeendefinitelylowered.

St.Mary's,Chapel-lane,"mother church"ofCatholicBelfast,whichwas condemnedasunsafetwoyearsago, hasnowbeenreconstructed.

ItwastohavebeenopenedbyCardinalMacRory,butrecentraidshave causedapostponement.Thereconstructedchurch,however,isunharmed.

Theinteriorhasbeentransformed and wsanctuary,sacristies,organ andt newaltarshavebeenbuilt. leaving-debtof£5,000.

DAKARPRIEST-HEROIN CANADA.

MemoriesofDakarwererecalled whenapriestwearingtheuniformof acaptainoftheFreeFrenchNavyinsteadofthebrownhabitandwhite mantleofhisCarmeliteOrder,Rev, FatherLouisoftheTrinity(orCaptainGeorgesd'Argenlieuasheis knownforthepresent)arrivedinCanadaonamissionforGeneraldeGaulle. HeisamemberofdeGaulle'sFree FrenchCouncil.

FatherLouiswasconscriptedinto theFrenchservicesalongwithother clericsofmilitaryagewhenthewar brokeout.Onthecapitulation,he joineddeGaulle'sforcesandisstillin theNavy.Asaide-de-camptoGeneraldeGaulleontheDakarexpedition,hiscourageinthatunfortunate episideattractedconsiderableattention.

Suchwasthestartling,andyetfullyconsidered,statementmadebyMr.R. F.O'Sullivan,F.R.C.S.(Eng.),during alecturerecentlygivenbyhimtothe ProfessionalMen'sSodality,Melbourne, onthesubjectofAustralia'sdeclining birth-rate. ErroneousIdeas.

Whilstdealingwiththeissueofcontraceptivestooverseasandhomedefenceforces,thelecturerpraisedthe effortsofSt.Joan'sAlliance,which hadpetitionedtheWarOfficetodeclare"maisonstolerees""outof bounds"forallBritishandEmpire forces;buttheWarOfficerefused,allegingthatsucharestriction leadtogreaterdangercofclandestine intercourseandanincreaseofV.D. Butithadbeenprovedbeyonddoubt thatwheretherewerenosuch "maisonstolerees"therewasnoincreaseinclandestineintercourse,and therewasalwaysadecreaseinV.D. Thepresenceofsuchplaceswasan incitementtoimmorality,andtheissue ofprophylacticstoarmytroopsencouragedmentoengageinillicitintercourse,whowouldotherwisehave neverconsideredit.

Asregardsthesuggestionthatit wasinjurioustothehealthofthe normalmantopractisecontinence,he wouldreferthemtothestatementof Dr.MervynStewartintheMelbourne TownHallinJuly,1924,ontheoccasionofthescreeningofmovingpictures dealingwithV.D.,that"theVictorian branchoftheB.M.A,affirmsthatchastityistheonlyabsolutesafeguard againstV.D.Thepopularideathat continenceisinjurioustohealthiserroneous."

SheofirilinuedthefightagainstslaverywhichwassodeeplyrootedinsocietyefirstamongsttheRomans,then amongstthewavesofBarbarianswho succeededthem.BytheXth.Century herteachinghadpermeatedtothe depthsofsociety.Andthevictory overslaverywasthevictoryoftheCatholicChurch.

THEMIDDLEAGES.

(2)TheearlyMiddleAgessawthe predominanceofserfdom,acondition midwaybetweenslaveryandfreedom. Andagainthechampionofthepoorin theirfightagainstarapaciousBaronagewastheCatholicChurch.Bythe endoftheXVIth.Centuryserfdomwas fastdisappearingfromthecountries whichhadremainedfaithfultotheCatholicChurch.

Thegenerallyacceptedsocialand economicideasoftheMiddleAgeswere' thejustwageasthefirstchargeofindustry,thejustprice,therecognition notonlyofprivatepropertybutofits sociallimitsandobligations,thecondemnationofusury.Fortheseideas, theCatholicChurchacceptsfullresponsibility.Theywereherideas.

THEISEOFCAPITALISM.

151 'iththesuppressionofthe Guilds,an4-kheriseofthatIndustrial Capitalismcharacterisedbyitsinjusticeanditsoppressionoftheworker, theChurchwasopenlyand/orsecretly persecuted,andhoundeddowninpracticallyeverycountryofthecivilised world;shewasdeniedallrightsinthe matterofeducation,deprivedofall voiceinpublicandnationallife.LiberalisticPhilosophyandBigBusiness weregoingtoruntheworldwithout her.PeoplesneeredattheChurchas theChurchofthepoorandignorant. Butnowthattheyhavemadesuchan appallingmessofthings,theywishto blamethedespisedandrejectedChurch fortheirfailure.

NeverthelessthesameCatholic Churchwasandremainedthechampionoftheoppressed.Theworkof BishopKettelerinGermany,ofAlbert deMunandDelaTourduPinin France,ofVogelsanginAustria,ofTonioloinItaly,showclearlyenoughto thosewhowanttoseethatitwasthe CatholicChurchwhichstoodbythe down-troddenmasses. * * * *

THEGREAT,ENCYCLICALS.

Thencame,in1891,thegreatEycyclical"RerumNovarum"ofLeoXIII, whichwastotheworkersoftheworld whatMagnaCartawastothepeopleof England-thelatterdocumentitselfthe workofaCatholicArchbishop.

Fortyyearslaterin1931,theanniversaryofthisgreatdocumentofLeo XIIIwascommemoratedbythepublicationofanequallystrongdefenceof therightsandlibertiesoftheworkers, namely,theEncyclical"Quadragesimo Anno"ofPopePiusXI.

(6)To-day,whenthereactionofdisillusionedLiberalsagainsttheexcesses oftheCapitalismcreatedbytheirown philosophythreatenstoleadthemasses intotheevenmoreappallingslaveryof TotalitarianCommunism,orNazism, theChurchonceagainstandsforthas theprotectoroftheworkersagainst themenaceofthenewslaveryofTotalitarianism.

Hetaughtthattheknowledgeofthe truthwhichHebroughttotheworld wouldsetmenfree.HediedtoreconcilethehumanracewithGod.

Churchandareadisgracetothereligion theyprofess.

Therearesometimespriestswhoare unworthyoftheirhighoffice;forthe SacramentofHolyOrdersandthe heavyresponsibilitiesofthePriesthood donotremovetheinnateliabilityof humannaturetotemptationandsin.

AsforthepreachingoftheGospel tothepagans,letmeherequotethe statisticsfromonesmallcornerofthe MissionField.LetustaketheCatholicMissionwithitsHeadquarters atVunapope,nearRabaul,NewBritain.

ThenativepopulationofthisNew BritainMissionareaisabout155,000.

Man,then,accordingtoourChristian faith,isnotmerelyabodyn,)ryet merelyasoul.Norisitstrictlytrue tosayheisabodywithasoul.Rather heisa"body-soul,"becausetheunion betweenthetwoisnotlikeamixture ofsaltandsugarwherebothelements remainthemselves,butisratherlike theunionbetweenthetwogases,oxygenandhydrogen,whichresultsina completelynewsubstance-water.So powerfulisthisunionthatonlydeath candissolveit.

Whenamanrealisesthetruththat heisa"body-soul"heisatoncestruck bythesillinessofthosepeoplewhotry toseparatereligionfromtherestof humanactivity.Religion,theysay, concernsonlyman'ssoul.Therefore keepitoutofbusiness,outofpolitics, outofsportandoutofsociallife.But whateverconcernsman'ssoulconcerns alsohisbodyinsomedegree,because thesetwoelements,bodyandsoul,are inman,one.Thereforereligionmust penetratethewholeofman'slife. Nothingcanescapeit.Itistheprincipleoflifefora"body-soul."

Butwhenoneasks,to-day,whatis aman?theordinaryfellowgivesa strangevarietyofanswers,allofwhich gotoshowhowreligion,beingshutout oflife,haswarpedtheoutlookof manypeople.

Somethinkthatmanismerelyawell developedbody,bulgingwithmuscles andexcellingatallkindsofsportand featsofstrength.Thisismerelyarevivaloftheoldpaganotlookwhich prevailedinRomeandSparta.Ifman istobenomorethanawell-developed body,thenlogicallyheoughttolive likeananimaloutandout.Others againlookonmanmerelyasamindto bedeveloped.Theyconcentrateon theacquirementofknowledgeand learning.Butindoingthisexclusivelytheyfallevenbelowthepaganstandardwhichdemandedahealthymind inahealthybody.Sometendmerely tosatisfytheiremotionsthroughpleasure,asiflifeconsistedonlyofplay. Theseareundevelopedpeoplewhoretainthemindofachildinanadult body.Now,noneofthesethingsis badinitself,butbecomeswrong throughbeingseparatedfromother humanactivitiesandbeingmadean endinitself.

Andwhynot?HadnotHisFather andourFathermadethemlovingly andpreservedtheirkindthroughthe agesfortheuseandpleasureofmen?

Christwasgentle(especiallytosinners),butnotweak.Christwasangry withthePharisees,butHedidnot hatethem.Indeed,Hediedforlove ofthem.Christlovedallmennet merelysentimentallyorwithwords, butbylivingahardlifeanddyinga deathofdisgraceforourexampleand instruction,andtosaveuswhenwe couldnotsaveourselves.Loveislike that-itdoesn'ttalkmuch,butitis constantlydoingthings,notonlyoccasionalhardandheroicthings,butthe monotonous,littlethingsofdailylife. Catholicsunderstandfullwellthe Church'sattitudetowardsdivorce.In missions,Lentendiscourses,andthe Catholicpress,theyfrequentlyhear theindissolubilityofthemaritalbond defendedandtheevilsofdivorceexcoriated.Itcomes,then,tomanya Catholicassomewhatofasurprise andpuzzlewhenhelearnsfromtime totimeofpreviouslymarriedpersons enteringintonewmaritalbondswithintheChurch.

WellinstructedCatholicswillat onceknowthatinmanysuchcases thepartywhoismarryingagainfailed inthefirstinstancetocontractatrue andvalidmarriageintheeyesofthe Church,owingtothepresenceofsome invalidatingreason,such,forexample, asthecontractingofthemarriage beforeajusticeofthepeace;hence theyrecognisethattheapparentsecondmarriageisinrealitythefirstreal andvalidone.Oncecompetenteccleslasticalauthoritieshavejudgedthata previousmarriagebondwasinreality notruebondatallthecontracting partiesarefreetomarryagain.The differencebetweensuchcasesandthe commonpracticeofcivildivorceis mostobvious;herenobondisbroken, butmerelyadeclarationmadethat theinitialcontractwasnullandvoid, incivildivorce,ontheotherhand, anattemptismadetosevertheexistingmarriagetie. Intheprecedingverses(vv.8-11) theapostlehasaddressedhimselfto twoclassesamongsthisreaders:the unmarried'(vv.8,9)andthosemarriedcoupleswherebotharebaptised Christians(vv.10,11).Hehasinformedtheselatterthattheirbonds,accordingtotheLord'scommandment, areindissoluble.Ifforsomereasona separationiseffected,twocoursesare opentothecouple;theymaylivetheir livessingly,instrictcontinence,or theymaybringaboutareconciliation; innocasemaytheymarryagain,He thenpassesontoathirdclass,those whoatthetimeoftheirconversian werealreadymarriedandwhosepartnerremainsinunbelief.IftheunbelievingpartneriscontenttolivepeacefullywiththeChristianspouse,St. Paulcounsels(sometheologianswould say:command)theconvertnotto putawaytheunbelievinghusbandor wife.Fortheunbelievinghusbandis sanctifiedbythebelievingwifeand theunbelievingwifeissanctifiedby thebelievinghusband(v.14),i.e.,the goodexampleoftheChristianwillhelp theunbelievertoleadabettermoral lifeandperhapseventuallysecurehis orherconversiontothefaith. Butwhatiftheunbeliever,offended bytheconversionofhispartner,is notcontenttolivepeacefullywithhis Christianwifeanddepartsfromher? Theapostleanswers:"Lethimdepart."Noobligationisputuponthe Christian,therefore,offollowingthe unbelievertoeffectareconciliation. Moreover,theapostledoesnotsay inthiscase,ashedidwhenspeaking ofaseparatedChristiancouple,that theChristianshouldrefrainfrommarryingagain,ratherheadds:"The brotherorthesisterisundernobondageinsuchcases;butGodhathcalled youuntopeace."Ifthereisnobondageinsuchcases,thentheChristian shouldbefreetomarryagainand thusfindthepeacethatGodintends forhiminhisnew-foundfaith.A stateofenforcedcontinencewouldbe formanyaverytruebondageanda

constantsourceofdisquietand anguish.IfthepeaceofwhichSt, Paulspeaksistobefound,thenanew unionwithafellowChristianmustbe possible,aunionthatwillsevercom- pletelytheoldbondcontractedin infidelity,becauseitisofanentirely higherorder,aSacrament,symbolisingtheunionbetweenChristandHis Church.

Suchinbroadoutlineisthecommon interpretationofthispassageofSt. Paul.Initwereadanexceptionto thegenerallawofthedissolubilityof themarriagebond,madeknowntothe earlyChristiansbytheApostleofthe Gentilesinfavouroftheirfaith.For manyamarriedpersonse-iouslyinquiringintothetruthofCh-ist's mission,theacceptanceofPaptism wouldinevitablyent'ii.ifnotdesertionbytheunbelievingpartner,at leastlongyearsofinternaldissension andstrife.Theorospectofsepara- tion,enforcedorvoluntary,withthe consequentnecessii:vofcontinence mightseemutterlydisheartening,if notbeyondhumanstrength:the thoughtofmarriedlife,besetwith unendingbickeringsbecauseofreligiousbelief,mightappearunbearable Itisclearthatforweakhumanssuch eventualitieswouldproveaserious obstacletothespreadofthefaith. Furthermore,marriedlifewithan unbelieverwhohadcontemptforChristianitymightproveadangeftisoccasionforapersonofnonetoostrong willtoabandonreligion,tofallinto sin,evenperhapstolapsebackinto theeasywaysofpaganism.ThoughChristdemandsgreatsacrificesof thosewhowillfollowHim,Hedoes nonethelesstakeintofullconsiderationtheweaknatureofman.He willnotcrushthebruisedreednor smotherthesmoulderingflag,To facilitatetheworkofconversion,to safeguardthepricelesspossessionof new-foundfaith,HeinspiredHis apostle,Paul,tomakeknownthisprivilege,thisexceptiontothegeneral lawoftheindissolubilityofthemarriagebond.Thefollowingdescribes theorivilegeasunderstoodtoday:-

1.Themarriage,ofwhosedissolution thereisquestion,musthavebeenenteredintobytwounbaptisedpersons.

2.Oneofthesepartiesislaterconvertedtothefaithandbaptised.

3,If,consequenttothereceptionof Baptism,theunbaptisedpartydeserts theChristianspouse,orisunwillingto livepeacefullywithhimorher,orunwillingtoshowproperregardforthe convert'sreligion,thentheChristian spouseenjoystheprivilegeofentering intoanewunionwithafellowChristian.Beforethisstepmaybetaken, however,theaboveconditionsmustbe establishedunderthesupervisionofthe properecclesiasticalauthorities.This isdonebymeansoftheso-called"interpellations."These"interpellations" consistoftwoquestionswhichmustbe askedoftheunbaptisedparty:first, whetherheorsheiswillingtobecome aconvertandacceptBaptism;cond, whetherheorsheisatleastlingto livepeacefullywiththeJoao'edpart- nerandwithoutcontumelyifroftheCreator.Iftheanswertothesequestions isnegative,theproperecclesiasticalauthoritieswillthendeclarethattheconvertisfreetocontractanewunion. Shoulditbeimpossibletocontactthe unbaptisedparty,adispensationfrom thenecessityoftheinterpellationsmay beobtainedfromtheHolySee.Itis tobeunderstood,ofcourse,thatthere isquestionhereoftheuseofaprivilege; hence,iftheconvertdoesnotwishto marryagain,heorsheisnotboundto doso,butmaycontinuetolivewith theunbaptisedpartnerormayseparate fromhimorherinfavouroflifeof continence.

4.Thebondcontractedininfidelityis dissolvedonlywhentheconvertenters uponanewmarriage.Onlythenis theunbaptisedpartyfreetomarry again,

OnethingIhearofyouvaguelydisturbsme,Idon'tfeelitcanbeas seriousastittle-tattlemakesout,but thereisprobablysomebasisoffact. Itistotheeffectthatyouhavegrown disillusionedaboutCatholicAction. Thismeansinpractice,Isuppose,that youhalt.growndiscouragedabout tangiblISresultsintryingtoChristian. iseyoursurroundings.Itisafatally attractivetemptationbecauseifone yieldstoitoneisleftnotwithasense ofguiltasinothermatters,butwith awarmthofcomplacencyandaflavourofmartyrdom,asmuchastosay: "Well,I'vedonemydamndest,butthe blightersarejusttoostupidorperverseorweaktotakethetruth.I've spentmyselfandfailed.Butanyhow,I'vedonemybestandthefailure isnofaultofmine."

Theweaknessofsuchanattitudeis. ofcourse,easilydiscoverable.Since whenhavewe,poorfish,beenableto guagethespiritualwondersthatGod worksinmen'sheartsthroughourinstrumentality?"Unlessyouseesigns andwonders,youbelievenot,"The answertothisproblem,asindeedto allothers,istobefoundinthelifeof OurLord.DoyourememberhowHe toldtheApostlesthat"itisoneman thatsowethandanotherthatreapeth. Ihavesentyoutoreapthatinwhich youdidnotlabour;othershavelabouredandyouhaveenteredintotheir labours"?DoYourememberthecolossalfailurethatwecallCalvaryand howallmenaresavedinthemarkof thatdebacle?Thepointisthatif youhavedoneeverythingpossibleand honestlyfeelnoself-reproach,youmay besurethatGodisworkingpower. fullythroughyoureffortseventhough thereisnovisibleeffect.Morelikely thereisfaultenoughonyourpart. ThefirstpresidentoftherevolutionaryregimewasKurtEisner,whowas afterwardsmurdered.Aninteresting linkisestablishedwiththenews thathiseldestdaughterhasbeen receivedintotheChurch,andwas baptizedasFreiaMariaAloysia.

Anoteofunusualinterestinthe openingofthenewBoys'Townat BrooklynPark,S.A.,isthattheInstituteofBrothersofSt.JohntheBaptist,towhosecarethefoundationisentrusted,isanAustralianCongregation.

TheChristianBrothers.theMarist Brothers,andtheDeLaSalleBrothers arewellknownthroughoutthecontinent,butfewpeopleoutsideSouthAustraliaareawareoftheexistenceofthe BrothersofSt.JohntheBaptist,the onlyOrderofteachingBrothersinthe Commonwealththatwasfoundedin Australia.

Theinstitutewasfoundedinthe 90'sbythelateMgr.Healy,whofor fortyyears,untilhisdeathin1921, labouredzealouslyintheparishof Thebarton,S.A.Mgr.Healyplaced theBrothersinchargeofparochial schoolsandoftheHomeforCatholic Boys,whichheestablishedatBrooklynPark.In1900heopenedahome or"shelter"forpoormenatGarfield, andthisalsoheplacedinchargeofthe Brothers.TheInstituteoftheBrothersofSt.JohntheBaptistwascanonicallyestablishedin1921,andanovitiateandjunioratewereopenedat BrooklynParkin1936.

WHENEVERyoumeetaCatholicwhohas"made"hismoney andwhoisnowingentle, philosophicretirement,itisforthe mutualbenefitofbothsoulsthatyou shouldinaugurateadiscussiononthe socialquestion.

Sometimesyouwillfindthatsucha manhasturnedtoreadingandreflection,hasdiscoveredthatasocialproblemreallyexists,istroubledwith vagueregretsabouthowhemadehis money,orthathemadesomuchofit. Maybeheistrying,towardstheend, tocompensateforapastlackofjustice byapresentdevotiontocharity.Or maybe-andmoreusually,Ifearyouwillfindsuchamanchieflyinvolvedinthecheeringreflectionthat hewasnotmadebyGod.Hewill bequiteunnecessarilyinsistentthathe isa"self-made"man-afactseldom inneedofdemonstration.Hehas gotwhereheisbyhardworkandselfdenial.Inhisstruggleforexistence hewastoobusytonoticeinjustice. Heknewtherewerethosewhocomplained,buthehasnotimefor"whiners."Mostoftheseweretoobusy complainingtogetoninlife.They werestillworkingforalivingwhile heisnowabletofeedamongthelilies. Hedoesn'tseesociallifeortheeconomicsystemasaproblem.Hisbluff, healthyoutlookcalculatesthat"there isplentyofroomatthetop."Those whoremainintheruckdosobecause theyareinefficient,lazyorimprovident.Ilearguesagainstrisngwages, becausetheworkmanwillinallprobabilityspendtheextrafewshillings inthepub.Hewishesallmencould beashimself-abstemiousandthrifty. Itisthesesimplevirtueswhichmake forsuccess.

Mr.MauriceCullitywasbornatFremantlein1903.Hewaseducatedat theChristianBrothers'HighSchool, Fremantle,andlaterattendedtheUniversity44WesternAustralia,wherehe took'tkredegreeofBachelorofScience inAgriculture.Hewasappointedan AgriculturalAdvisertotheDepartmentofAgriculturein1925.Hisfirst dutieswereassociatedwiththeinaugurationoftheexperimentscarried outontheWonganHillsResearchStation,andlaterforashortperiodhe wasincontrolofthatfarm.After transferringtothedairyingbranchin 1926,hewasstationedattheBusselton ButterFactory,thenunderStatecontrol,andsincethenhehasbeenactivelyassociatedwithallmajordairyingdevelopmentsintheSouth-West. Hehastakenaparticularinterestin pastureimprovementandinherdrecording.However.hismainactivities havebeendirectedtowardstheproblemsconnectedwiththemanufacture ofdairyproduce.Crisknowledgeand enthusiasmhavestimulatedtheadoptionofalterationsinthemethodsof productionandhandlingofmilkand creamonthefarmsandintheprocessingofcreaminthefactories, whichhavecontributedinalargedegreetotheimprovementofWestAustralianbuttertoitspresenthighstandard.

HIGHGATEDANCE.

OnJuly9last,acommitteeofladies heldtheirfirstsocialanddanceofthe seasoninaidoftheChristianBrothers' HighSchool,Highgate.Notwithstandingthefactthattheweather couldnothavebeenworse.theParish Hallpresentedananimatedappearance.Thefloorwascomfortably crowdedforeachdance.Noticed amoitethedancerswereseveralofthe boys'rents,whothoroughlyenjoyed thenightentertainment.Thehall wasdecoratedmainlyintheschool coloursofblueandgold,withmany paperlanterns,sunshadesandfloral decorationsadorningthestage.DuringtheeveningMissesMoyaandSheila O'Hallorandelightedtheiraudience witharenderingoftwovocalduets, "Love'sOwnSweetSong"and"Songis Sweet."MasterHymanNissengave aviolinsolo,forwhichhereceived goodapplause.MissPatMulcahy dancedtheChintreuse,andforanencoretheHighlandFling.Messrs.Ron Flanagan,GerardSlattery,andJim Isaiaweregivenarousingwelcome whentheyappearedwiththeirbanjos andpianoaccordeon.Theyplayed severalpopularsongs,inwhicheveryonejoinedandsangincommunity style.MissNellSheridan'sorchestrasuppliedthedancemusicandMiss Sheridanalsoactedasaccompaniste tothevariousitems.

Thismangavefromhisownbusinessexperienceanexample oftwoveryimportantthings:(1)ofthereadinessofthegeneralityoftheworkerstorespondgenerouslytofairtreatment;(2)of thecrimeofsocialinjusticewhichisrampanthereinAustralia. Thoughhisfirmwassteadilylosingmoney,hedecidedtoacton theprincipleofjusticethat,sincetheworkerscontributetotheprofitsofindustry,theyhavearightinjusticetoaproportionate shareofthoseprofits.Thusheraisedthestandardofwages,so thattheminimumwagepaidinhisfactorywas£6perweek. Withinthreemonths,thefirmhadconvertedlossesintoprofits,and inconsequence,theyhadapersonalinterestinthebusiness. Knowingthattheyweregettingafairdeal,theworkerswerecontented,loyal,andanxioustomakethebusinesspay.Thencertain bigfinancialintereststookahandandforcedhimoutofbusiness. Sincethefirmwasdoingsowell,theyapparentlywantedallthe profitsforthemselves.Acertainbanktookpossessessionandput inareceiver.Hethusshowedfromhisownexperiencesthat financialdictatorshipexercisesastrangle-holdoverindustry.This despoticcontroloppressesnottheemployeealone,butlikewisethe greatmassofharassedemployers.WerecallPopePiusXI's sympatheticunderstandingofthesituation,whoinurgingthelattertobemindfuloftheirresponsibilities,didnotpassoverthe graveinjusticestheythemselvesendure:"Weturninaspecial waytoyou,Christianemployersandindustrialists,whoseproblemisoftensodifficultforthereasonthatyouaresaddledwith theheavyheritageofanunjusteconomicregime,whoseruinous influencehasbeenfeltthroughmanygenerations."Webelieve anationaloffensiveagainstthisdictatorshiptobeanintegralpart ofourpresentwareffort.

Onepracticalstepcouldbetaken,now,whichwouldnotonly increasebutmultiplytheproductionofthiscountryandbring workerandemployertogetherinaninvincibleeffortofachievement. 'Thisisthegivingtoworkmenarealshareintheprofitsofindustry, thefirststeptowardsthatdistributedownershipadvocated throughoutthePapalencyclicals,andreiteratedinthestatements oftheAustralianBishops.YettheunhappyfateoftheSydney businessmanalreadyrelatedshowsonlytooclearlythefutilityof individualeffort,alone,inthefaceoforganisedopposition.Itis acompletevindicationofPiusXI'soutspokencriticism:"Inour daysnotaloneiswealthaccumulatedbutimmensepoweranddespoticeconomicdominationisconcentratedinthehandsofafew, andthosefewarefrequentlynottheowners,butonlythetrustees anddirectorsofinvestedfunds,whoadministerthemattheirgood pleasure."ThelatePopedidnothesitate,either,tonamethe seatofthetrouble:"Thispowerbecomesparticularlyirresistible

DiamondJubileeinAustralia ofSt.VincentdePaulSociety

ThediamondjubileeofthefoundationinAustraliaofthe SocietyofSt.VincentdePaulfallsonJuly24,andwearereminded intheanniversaryofthisgreatworkofChristiancharitythatis constantlygoingoninourmidst,solittleknownandinsufftiently supportedevenamongthegeneralbodyofCatholics.The36ciety cameintobeing,throughthelawyerOzanam,intheUniversityof Parisduringthelastcentury,whenthebeginningsoftheIndustrial Revolutionweremakingthemselvesevidentinthecreationofa proletariansocietymarkeddownbydegradationandpoverty.It wasanorganisationoflaymenwhichsetouttoanswerthesneers ofthesocialiststhatthegreatcorporalworksofmercyinthe Churchwereofthepast,andthat,inthatday,Shehadnofruitsto showworthyofHimWhohadbeenthefriendofthepoor.The resultwasasocietydedicatedtoeveryformofChristiancharity openedupbythesocialconditionsofthetimes.InitsbriefAustralianhistorytheSocietyhadspreadtoeverydioceseintheCommonwealth,andfaithfullyadherestotheoriginalplanlaiddown byFredericOzanam.Allitsactivitiesarecarriedoutbyworkers whoseservicesarenotonlygivenvoluntarily,butwhoalsomake contributionstoitsfunds.

Thereis,however,asharplineofdemarcationbetweentheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaulandallmerelyhumanitarianorganisations.Itismotivatedbythesupernaturalmotiveofcharityas againstthenaturalonesofpityandkindness.Theverynameof philanthropydeniesitsChristianconnections.Charitycannotbe inspiredmerelybytheloveofmanforhisownsake.Initsfull andcompleteexpressioncharityistheloveofGod,and,secondly, theloveofman,inandforGod.Thereisreallynoreasonfora man'slovinghisneighbourunlessitbethatweareallsonsofa commonFather.Thissupernaturalorientationoftheirworkis everbeforetheBrothersoftheSociety,anditisthisthatgivestheir workpermanenceandincrease,fortheFaithitselfisaboveallareligion,notonlyof"works,"butofdivinemotives.CharityoperatespracticallyintheSocietyinthatitsalms-givingdoesnotmake anyhumandiscriminations."Thetitleofthepoortooupoconsiderationistheirpovertyitself.Wearenottoinquiretowhat partyorsecttheybelong."NeitheraretheBrothersdeterredby thosecalculationsofcleanliness,civility;prospectofpublicrecognitionorofindividualgratitudesuchasoftenhaltthewell-intentionedphilanthropist.LastlytheSocietymaintainsthesecrecy ofitsgoodworksascounselledbytheGospel.Preciselybecause theyasknothingforthemselvesinthewayoftemporalrewardor applause,theBrothersofSt.VincentdePauldeservethewholeheartedsupportoftheCatholiclaityintheirsplendidworkofcharityandmercy.

Undeterredbydifficulties,in1914thefirstyearoftheGreatWar-heset toworkandinaseriesofexpeditions extendingoveraperiodoftwelve years,inwhichhetravelledoversome 20,000milesonfootormule,heamassedacollectionoffaunaandflora,fossils,fish,birdsandreptiles,etc..which haveallbeencarefullystoredandcataloguedinhismuseum.Asitcontains over2,500skinsofbirds,alargevariety ofreptilesandfish,2,000objectsof anthropologicalinterestand6,000varietiesofrockandminerals,thevalue oftheresultsobtainedmaybeestimated.Inoneexpeditionalone-that of1920-acaravanserieofeighty-three camelswasrequiredtotransportfossil remainsweighingthousandsofpounds.

Thequestionoftheantiquityofman andofhisfirstupwardstepsinthe marchofcivilisationhasalwaysexertedafascinationoverthescientific mind.But,whiletheveilofsecrecy hasbeenliftedsomewhatoverthe mysteryofhisfirstapearanceonearth, sothathumansettlementsarenow knowntohavebeeninexistenceinalmostfabulousperiodsofgeological time,anynewlightonthesubject cannotfailtobeofimportance.

ThegreatheartofAsia,especiallyin thevastregionsaboutMt.Altaiand theGobiDesert,maybesurmisedto holdmanysecretsconcerningman'santiquityandthebeginningofcivilisation,bothonaccountofthefabulous antiquityofChina'scivilisation.which islostinthemistsoftime,andofthe well-establshedfactofthegreat changeswhichhavetakenplaceinthe configurationofland,owingtothe shiftingofrivercoursesandtheencroachmentofsand,localitiesthatonce heldteemingpopulationsinahigh stateofculturehavebeenrendered arid. Aftersometimespentingeological andpaleontologicalwork,thetwoexplorersarrivedataspotnorth-eastto wheretheYellowRivermakesagreat bendabovethedistrictOrdoandsouth ofInnerMongolia,inwhichFather Licenthadthepreviousyearmarked formationswhichheconsideredmight proveinteresting.

Itwashereonthebordersofan ancientlakethattheymadetheirfirst sensationaldiscovery,

Itwasthatofthefirstpaleolithic settlementknowninthispartofAsia: fornothingofsuchancientcivilisationshadbeendiscoveredhitherto northoftheHimalayas.Onehearth alonefurnishedabundanttracesof habitation;over1,000cutstones,buriedundertheloessandmorerecentdeposits,whereman,contemporaneous probablywiththeMousteriansand AurignationsofEurope,hadthrown them.

Therewerebesidesscrapers,refuse engravings,longsword-blades.ham-

mersandanvils,andotherimplements;nothingwasmissingoftherequirementsofthecraftsmanwhohad fixedhisworkshopontheshoresof thisancientlake.Sixotherhabitationsclosebyprovidedfurtherevidenceofthehighestvalue;forthey provedthattheexplorershadnot onlydiscoveredasinglesettlement,but awholecentreofPaleolithiccivilisation.

NeolithicSettlement.

Abundantremainsalsoofcontemporaryfaunainaperfectstateofpreservationaugmentedtheimportanceof thediscovery.FathersLicentand Teilhardexhumedinabundancetheremainsofstags,horses,rhinoceros,cattle,gazelles,chamois,hyenas,andelephants;sometypesofanimalsthat havesincedisapearedfromtheregion; andtheseimportantfindswerefollowedupthefollowingyearbyafurther sensationaldiscoveryineasternMongolia,towhichthetwoFatherswent foranotherexpeditionin1924.

Inthissecondexpeditiontheyfound inthenorthernpartofMongoliaaneolithicsettlementaboutamileinextent thatyieldedresultsofthegreatestimportance.

Forhereinabasinformedbythe windinthesteppeanimmensenumberofstoneimplementswerefound skilfullycut;butwhatwasofparticularvaluewasthefactthatbytheactionofthewindonthesideoftheexcavationsremainsofprehistoricindustrywerefoundin"situ,"enabling theauthenticityandgeologicaldateof fidxisecdo.veriespreviouslymadetobe

Potteryalsowasfoundinabundance.Thegreaternumberofneolithic pieceswereporphyrystonessimplycut orusedashammersorroughlyformed intoscrapers,whichcouldatfirstsight betakenforpaleolithicinstrument,. Butbesidetheserudimentaryimplementswerealsofoundfinelyworked piecesofcrystal,jasperandcalcedony.

Suchareswordscarefullycarved,delicatearrowpointsandlittletriangular bladesthatwereveritablejewels.Two piecesinparticularwereworthyof specialmention.Theywereacouple ofploughsharesaboutafootanda halfinlengthintheformofalaurel leaf,Theirsizeandcurvewiththe tipsmanifestlywornawayleftno doubtoftheusetowhichtheyhad beenput. Theirdiscovery,analogoustosimilar onesmadeinNorthAmerica,tended toestablishtherelationsthatonce existedbetweenthetwocontinents, AsiaandAmerica,

ForhisexplorationoftheYellowand Tientsinrivers,FatherLicentwaselectedafellowoftheGeographicalSociety ofFrancein1925,andreturningto Tientsincontinuedhisgreatworkin hismuseum,whileFatherTeilhardde t'hardinwenttojointheCenozoic LaboratoryinPeipingonitsfoundationin1929.Sincethenhehasbeen connectedwithotherexpeditionsof secularbodies,suchastheRoyChapmanAndrewExpeditionintoMongolia, theChinese-Swedish-AsiaticExpeditionandtheYale-NorthIndiaExpedition.Hislatestexploit,forwhich,as abovenarrated,hehasbeenrecently decorated,afterfourmonthsofresearchworkinCentralBurma,was sponsoredbytheHarvardUniversity.

Inithewassuccessfulinfindingthe earliesttracesofhumanlifeintheIrrawadyBasinandtheShanPlateau nearMandelay,theimportanceof whichliesintheevidenceitproduced ofaprimitivecivilisationstrikingly similartothatofJavaandIndia.

Attachmenttotheworldandits vanitiesstilllurkedintheheartof Francis.Thisattachment,without beingcriminal,wasaperiltotheeternalfutureofhissoulandanobstacle tothedesignsofGod,Thesebonds mustbebroken,andGodwillnotcease tostrikeblowafterblowuntilthey areallsevered.

ThelongcaptivityatPerugia,while enlighteningthemindofourholy youth,lefthimmostofhisillusions. EternalAdieu?

TherewasonlyonelinkmoreattachingFrancistotheworld;butthislink wasnotyetbroken.Thevanitiesof theage,thosethousandtriflesthat havesuchcharmsforyouth,spokebetimestohisimagination,prickedhim bytherobeoftheflesh,andwhisperedsoftlyinhisear,astheydidtoSt. Augustineontheeveofhisconversion, "Artthougoingtobidusaneternal adieu?Howthen!Henceforthwe willnolongerkeeptheecompany!"

fulbonds,andhisheartwasdivided. Nevertheless,eversincethewalkwe havespokenof,hedrewclosereither totheHeartofGodorthemiseryof thepoor,hiswell-belovedbrethren. FrancisretiredintoagrottonearAssisi,wherehepassedthegreaterpart ofhisdaysalonewithGod,conjuring Himwithtearstopardonhimthemisspentyearsofhisthoughtlessyouth,andtohenceforthdirecthisstepsin thenarrowpathsofperfection.Let usleavetheSeraphicDoctortotell howHeavenrewardedsuchprayers. TheMostRev.MartinGillet,MasterGeneraloftheDominicans,hasissued alettertotheSuperiorsandmembers oftheOrder,informingthemthatthe GeneralElectionChapterwhichwas tohavemetattheRomanAngelicum inSeptemberhasbeenpostponeduntil theEastervacationin1942.Thewar wouldpreventtheattendanceofcertainmembersoftheChapter.The ConstitutionoftheOrderallowsfora sixmonths'postponementand,if necessary,authorisationforafurther delaywillbeobtainedfromtheHoly See. Thelettercontainsinterestinginformationontheworkandpresentstatus oftheOrderanditsmembers.More thanhalfoftheProvincesareinwar areasandmorethan1,000Dominicans aremobilised.DuringtheSpanish civilwar150Dominicanswerekilled, includingtheformerMaster-General, FatherParedes.Sofarasisknown, twelveDominicanshavebeenkilled and700takenprisonersinthepresent war.InPoland,severalconventswere destroyed,butconventlifehasbeen resumedintheinvadedProvinces.

Thisdisclosureismadebyaspecial correspondentoftheNCWCNewsService,whosemessagehascomefrom Geneva.Fearsareexpressed,the correspondentsays,thathomesforthe agedwillnextbeinvaded.

ThisrevelationgivespointtoarecentdecisionbytheCongregationof theHolyOfficewhichwasgivenprominenceinbroadcastsbyVaticanRadio. TheCongregationsolemnlydecided thatitisnotlawfultokillthosewho, havingcommittednocrimedeserving ofdeathbecomeaburdenuponthe community.TheHolyFatherauthorisedthisdecisiontobepublished.

StrasbourgCathedralhasbeentaken overbytheNazisasanationalmonument, Thecruelexterminationofinsane peopleinGermanygoesonunabated. Itisreliablyestimatedthatnofewer than100,000personshasbeenkilled bytheNazissofar,theexcusegiven being'thattheyare"aburdenon thecommunity!"

IntheWurttembergtownofGrafeneckthefirstexperimentwasmade inshacksspeciallybuiltforthepurpose.
