Thisstateofaffairshasbeenbrought aboutprincipallybythegreatnumberofOrthodoxRussianswho,under theleadershipoftheirclergy,areleavingnostoneunturnedtoembroilthe countryinareligousrevolution.ThousandsoftheseRussianrefugeeswhofled thepersecutionoftheBolshevikregimeemigratedtoSlovakia,seeking thereligiousfreedomdeniedthemin theirnativeland.Inreturnforthis freedomofconsciencegrantedthem bytheSlovaks,theyhaveorganised atremendousfightoneverythingCatholic.andhavelightedtheflamesof religiouspersecutionwhichthreaten todisrupttheunityoftheRepublic bybringingcivilwartothisunhappy country.
AMilitantBandofBigots.
Theleaderinthisanti-nationalmovementisaRussianOrthodoxpriest,the ArchimandriteVitalisMaximenko, whothoughanativeoftheUkraine, haslivedinLadimirovaforthepast twoyears.Maximenkohasorganised theRutheniansofSlovakiaintoamilitantreligiousband,whogoaboutthe countrypreachinganarchyandstirring upschismaticsagainstCatholics.No oneknowswhereheobtainsthefunds tofinancethismovement.Heisalways,however,inpossessionofenough moneytocarryonhisnefariouswork.
Recently,Maximenkoorganisedwhat hecallsthe"UkrainianLegion,"the primarypurposeofwhichorganisation istomenaceallwhoshowanyintentionofdesertingtheOrthodoxChurch bythreateningtoburntheirhomesand crops,ortotorturethemphysically. Thesesamerovingbandsofreligious fanaticsinvadethehomesofCatholic farmers,andwillnotleaveuntila moneytaxispaidthem,inthemeantimewantonlydestroyingeverything withinreach.SomiserablehasbecometheconditionoftheCatholicpeasantsofSlovakiathatmanyarecontemplatingleavingthecountryfor good.
ThedisordersinSlovakiahavebecomesocommonandsowidespread
thattheGreekCatholicclergyrecently addressedanopenlettertoboththe GovernorandPrefectofCassovia,denouncingthepropagandacarriedoffby theRussianSchismatic-clergyknown asBatusky"againsttheCatholic Church.Uptodatenoreplyhasbeen receivedtothisprotestand,asaconsequence,thereligiousconditionofSlo. vakiahasgrownworsefromdayto day. TheSlovakscomplain,andjustly, thatthereSchismaticpriests,whohad fledtoSlovakiaforprotectionand werereceivedwithopenarms,have' nowturnedontheirprotectorsand havebegunthesamekindofagitation forwhichtheywereexpelledfromRussia.Thereligiouspropagandaofthe "Batusky"againsttheCatholicChurch, itsclergy,andthePopeisuniversally andbitterlyresentedhere,sincethe SlovakshavealwaysbeenmodelCatholics.
Maximenkocarriesonhisworkwith ahighhanddespitetheeffortsofthe civilauthoritiestocurbhisactivities. CitedtoappearbeforetheDistrict CourtofVysinSvidnik,theArchimandritecamebut,becausehecould notbeheardimmediately,afteropenly insultingthejudge,departedandrefusedtoappearagain. PriestBeatenbyMob.
EasterMondayinthevillageofCarna apainfulsceneoccurredwhenagroup ofSchismaticpriests,accompaniedby theirpartisans,threwtheparishpriest fromacarriage,beathimwithclubs, andattemptedtowrestfromhimthe keysoftheChurch,atthesametime utteringblasphemiesagainstthe ChurchandtheRepublic.
AtVysniaOrlichabandofSchis maticsforciblyenteredaCatholic Church,and,despitethepresenceof sevengendarmes,heapedridiculeupon thworshippersandopenlythreatened deathtoaparishpriest.AtLadimirovaasimilarsceneoccurred,duringwhichtheSchismaticsthrewrotteneggsattheofficiatingpriest. The seempowerless inthepresenceoftheseoutbreaks. TimeandagainSchismaticdisturbecs ofthepeacehavebeenarrestedbut, underonepretextoranother,appear tobeabletodefeattheendsofjustice.
CatholicsStrivetoRemainCalm. ConditionsinSlovakiaarerapidly becomingintolerable.TheCatholic peoplefacethesituationwithcalmness andprudentlyabstainfromwreaking theirvengeanceupontheirpersecutors. If,however,theonslaughtsofthe Schismaticscontinuemuchlonger,no onecananswerforthepublicse,:trity. ItwasforthisreasonthattheCatholicpeoplewerepreparedtoundergo anysacrificestoenabletheirchildrento beeducatedaccordingtotheprinciplesoftheirfaith.Hewasdeeply gratefultotheBrothersfortheirselfdenyinglaboursfortheyouthofthe StateandPerthinparticular.The Collegehasnowcompletedthethirtiethyearofitsexistence,andhe couldsafelysaythatatpresentitis fulfillingineverywaythepurposeof itsfoundation.Hehopedthatthe Collegewouldcontinuetoprosperasit hasdoneduringtheyearpast.

TheplaycentresroundthestoryofSt. Alexius,who,aftermanywanderings, returnsasapilgrimtohisfather's house,and,unrecognisedbyhim,acceptshishospitality,muchtothedisgustofthehousehold.AsEuphe mianus,adistinguishedRomanpatrician,JackMonaghanwasadecided success,especiallyinthescenewhere hehearsthevoiceofsomeonewarninghimnottodrinkofthepoisoned cup.GeraldRuse,asAlexius,was alsoverygood,aswasTomRodriguez asProculus,thesteward.Thelatter's deliverywasveryfine.Theslaveparts weretakenbyDaveCrawcour,George Balding,LaurieSpencer(excellent BertPalandri,andJackPunch.Ger. aldCannonwasGannio,thebeggar, whosesuggestionledBibulustotryto poisonhismaster.Talienonthe wholetheolaywasapronouncedsuccess,andwasampleevidenceofthe skilledteachingofMissAnitaFitzgerald,L.T.C.L.Theconcertconcluded withthechoir'ssingingof"Australia Fair."

DuringtheyearconsiderableextensionsweremadetotheScienceLaboratory.Wehopethattheimproved facilitiesprovidedwillleadtoaconsiderableincreaseinthenumberofthose takingSciencesubjects,especially Chemistry,withoutwhichtheprospectivemedicalstudentisgreatlyhandicappedduringthefirstyearinscience inthePerthUniversity.Aradioreceivingsethasbeenfittedupinconjunctionwiththelaboratory.Thestudents,particularlytheboarders,have enjoyedtheexcellentconcertsbroadcastedfromthecentralstationofWestralianFarmersLtd.Commercial classeswereheldduringtheyear,and studentswereenteredfortheJunior Commercialexamination.
Intherealmsofsportwehavehada verysuccessfulyear.InthePublic SchoolsSwimmingSports,heldin Marchlast,ourteamwasvictorious, mainlythroughtheexcellentperformancesofA.HowsonandT.Cook.At theendofthefirstterm,wehadwon twoofthreecricketmatches,and havesofarbeenfairlysuccessfulin thesecondround.
Itiswithextremesatisfactionthat Ipresenttoyouthereportofthe year'sworkinC.B.C.TheCollegehas nowbeenthirtyyearsinexistence,due ingwhichperiodithasgrownfrom veryhumblebeginningstoitspresent satisfactorypositioninsecondaryeducationinWesternAustralia.Theyear 1924thereforeaddsonemoremilestone tothehistoryoftheCollege-ahistory whichweproudlyclaimtohavebeen closelyassociatedwiththegrowthof theCatholicChurchinWesternAustralia,andPerthinparticular.Fat fromallowingourselvesto.beoutpaced inthisageofeducationalprogress,we havekeptwellabreastwithmodern methodsinallbranchesofsecondary education.
Withoutathoroughgroundinginthe principlesandpracticeofourholy faith,educationinaCatholicschoolis ahollowsham.Inthesedaysofirreligionandscepticism,theaverage youngmancannotpossiblyhopetoremaintruetohisfaith'unlesshisearly religioustrainingbethoroughlyefficient.IntheLeavingCertificateclass elementarylessonsaregiveninChii,-tiansocialscience-abranchofreligioustrainingverynecessarytocounteractthefallacioustheoriesofmodern socialism.ThesocietyoftheKnights oftheBlessedSacramenthasheldits usualmonthlymeetings.Lastmonth anumberofboyswereenrolledinthis mostexcellentsocietybyRev.Father Brown,C.SS.R.Theannualretreat ofthreedayswasmostsuccessfully conductedbyRev.FatherGlover, C.SS.R.Theoutstandingeventofthe yearhasbeentheformationofa branchoftheSt.VincentlePaulSocietyintheCollege.HisGracethe Archbishop,theCathedralclergy,and Rev.FatherO'Callaghaninparticular havetakenakeenandpracticalinterestinthenewly-formedbranch.Energeticandcapableofficerswereelected,adseevralsuccessfulmeetingshave beenheld.Wetrust:hatthesociety willgrowinusefulnaesastheyears pass,andthataftersomeyearsthose whohavenewlyjoinedasmembers willbefoundtakinganactivepartin thegovernmentofthewholesocietyin theArchdiocese.
Mr.FrankTroy(MinisterforMines), proposedaheartyvoteofthanksto HisGraceforhispresencetherethat night.TheyallknewhowdeeplyinterestedtheArchbishopwasinthe causeofCatholiceducation,andhow mushthatinterestwascentredinthe successoftheChristianBrothers'Col. lege.Hehadtoapologiseforthe absenceofthePremier(Mr.P.Collier), whowasunabletoleavetheHouse thateveningowingtothedebateon theLoanEstimates.ThePremier haddirectedhimtosaythathewas proudofthesuccessoftheCollege, andlikewiseproudthatoneofhissons hadbeeneducatedthere,andtheother wasstillastudent.Mr.JackO'Dea secondedthevoteofthankstothe Archbishop.AsPresidentoftheOld Boys,hefeltitanhonourtobeinvitedtospeakthatnight.Hethanked BrotherPowerforhisinterestinthe OldBoys'Association.

ThefirstXVIII.,ablycoachedbyMr. J.Leckie,andcaptainedbyW.Brophy,againcamethroughtheseason withoutdeefat.Thesecondteam, thoughhardpressedattimes,alsofinishedchampions. Amostsuccessful triptoNarroginandWaginbrought thefootballseasontoaclose.We aredeeplygratefultothoseladiesand gentlemenwhomadetheboys'stayso enjoyable,particularlyMr.F.Barnett, whoseorganisingworkwassosuccessful. AttheInter-schoolSports,heldin Novemberlast,wewereplacedsecond toHighSchool.RecordswereestablishedbyA.Szczecinskiinthe100and 220yardsunder14,andHaroldLalor equalledtherecordinthe100yards under13. LastSeptemberLauncelotGoody leftforRometobeginhisecclesiastical studiesatthePropagadaCollege.Beforeleavinghewasgivenasendoffby hisfellowstudentsintheUniversity classes.InMarch,FrankO'Connor tookuphisresidenceinSt.Colunrba's College,Springwood,tostudyforthe priesthood.Wewishthemeverysuccessinthepreparationfortheirsacred calling.

TheHibernianSociety AnnualCommunion OnSunday,the14th.inst.,themembersoftheabovesocietymadetheir annualCommunioninabodyatthe CathedraloftheImmaculateConception.Therewasafinegatheringofrepresentativesfrombrancheswithinthe metropolitanarea,notwithstandingthe greatinconveniencethereisofgetting tothecityfromthesuburbsforan earlyMassonSundaymorning.The occasionbeingaspecialone,8o'clock MasswascelebratedbyHisGracethe Archbishop.TheseatingaccommodationoftheCathedralwaswelloccupied, forassociatedwiththemembersof theHibernianSocietyinhonouring ourEucharisticLordwerethemembersoftheYoungLadies'Catholic Club,whowerealsomakingthe annualCommunionenjoinedby theirrules.Itwasaninspiringsight, andonewhichwasedifying,towitness somanyoftheyoungmenandwomen oftheCatholiccommunityapproachingthealtarrailsinobediencetothe rulesgoverningtheirrespectiveCatholicsocieties.Therealobjectand worthofaCatholicsocietyismadeevidentnotfromitssocialandbenevolent side,butfromthespiritualandreligiousatmosphereitcreates.Itisthereforepleafingtonoticethemembersof theHibernianSocietymaintainingthe traditionsof'theirorder,andthatit stillholdsaforwardplaceamongour Catholicorganisations.Itisapity, however,thattheabsenceofseveral oldandfamiliarfacesthisyearwere absentfromtheCommunionbreakfast table.Thereiseverprevalentthe necessityforstrongrepresentationof oldmembersonsuchoccasionstogive encouragementtotheyoungoneswho aretocarryontheworkofthesociety ifprogressistobemadeinitsaffairs. About90memberssatdowntoan excellentbreakfastintheHibernian HallshortlyafterMass.HisGrace, whofavouredthegatheringwithhis presence,receivedawarmwelcomeon hisarrival.Presentalsowerethe VeryRev.FatherHannigan.C.SSR., RectoroftheRedempteristMonastery, andtheRev.P.Lynch,ofMaylands, Rev.J.Lynch,ofLeederville,andRev. Bro.J.Cawley.PastPresident,in amostappropriatespeech,proposed "TheHierarchyandClergy."The toasthadalways,heheld,animportant placeinthetoastlistofaCatholicsociety.andamongstHiherniansinthe OldLandandinAustraliaithadever beenreceivedwiththatgreatregard whichwascharacteristicofpractical Catholicity.Hewasgladtofindthat inthiscountrytherewasshownby Catholicsthatrespectanddevotionto theHierarchyandclergywhichwas theprevailingcustomofthepeopleof IrelandtotheirBishopsandpriests. Hereferredtothegreatworkof'the HierarchyandclergyofIrelandfor FaithandFatherland,andclaimedthat thetraditionsofCatholicIreland hadbeencarriedtothiscountryby thepioneerIrishBishopsandpriests whohaddugfaranddeepthefoundationsofReligionandChristianEducationinthiscountry.Thespiritwhich theygavetotheCatholicChurchin Australiawould,bebelieve,becarried onbytheAustralianpriesthoodofthe future.HeconpratulatedHisGrace onhisdecisiontoerectaCathedral worthyofagreatState,uponv-hathe thoughtwasthemostpicturesquesite inthecity.ThenewCathedralwould
andBreakfast hewasassuredwhencompletedbe aworthymonumenttothezealanddevotionwhichhasbeeninculcatedby theHierarchyandclergyinthehearts ofthepeopleofthiscountry.We havegoodpriests,hecontinued,and weareproudofthem.Inhistribute tothegreatworkoftheBishopsand clergy,heincludedtheSistersandBrothersoftheteachingOrders,whoselaboursforreligionandChristianeducationcouldnotbetoohighlyappreciated.Themostsolidmanifestationof thegoodworkoftheSistersandBrothers,hesaid,inconclusion,wasthe resultsinthevariouscompetitiveexaminations-theyspokeforthemselves theworthofourCatholicschools. HisGrace,inhisreply,thankedBro. Cawleyforhiseloquentremarks.He congratulatedthesocietyonthenumberwhomadetheirCommunionthat morning.Itwasaconsolingsightto himastheirArchbishoptowitnessso manyofthemembersobservingthe ruleofthesocietyandfulfillingtheir religiousduty.TheHibernianSocietywas sation,anexcellentCatholicorganiandhewaswitnessintheCathedralthatmorningofthepracticalCatholicityofthemembersandtheirloy- altytotheChurch.Hewasgladden- edbytheannouncementmadebyMr. Dohenythatthesocietyproposedto establishafreebursaryfortheeducationofaWestAustralianforthe priesthood.TherewasnolackofvocationsamongourAustralianyoung men,andiftheexpenseoftraining themcouldbemet,hewasassured therewouldbenowantofaspirantsto carryontheworkoftheChurch.At presenttheyhavefiveAustraliansat PropagandaandoneatSpringwood, NewSouthWales,andsevenoreight othersintheStatepreparingfortthe priesthood.Therewasnothingthey couldofferhimmoreacceptablethan thebursary.Theywantedmore prieststomeettheurgentneedsof increasedpopulation.Theyhadno idea,norhadhe,ofthevastareaof theArchdioceseuntilhecommenced thehiscanvasstoraisefundsforbuilding newCathedral.Someofthepar- isheswereveryextensive,andthework ofthepriestinchargewasfrequently difficultandarduous.Hewas'sorry tohearthatthesociety attractingtheyoungpeople,andthatit neededmoreactivity.Heregarded theannualCommunionasanexcellent meansofincreasinginterestinthe society,andhewouldbegladtomeet theheadsoftheorderandseewhat couldbedonetogalvaniseitintothat activitywhichtheydesired.(His GracethenlefttoattendtheCatholic Ladies'Club,whowereholdingasimilarfunction.)
VeryRev.FatherHanniganspokein laudatorytermsoftheHibernianSo ciety,withwhichhewasassociated sinceboyhood,hisfatherhavingbeen aPastPresident.Referencehadbeen madetohisAustralianbirth.Whilst hewasjustlyproudofhisnativeland, hewasequallyproudofhisassociationwithIreland.Hehadspent20 yearsinthatcountry,andhesawits wonderfulfaithandsupernaturallife, andheblessedGodforeverymoment hespentthere.Hewasgladtothink thatthesamefaithandloveforreligionwasalsoevidentintheCatholic lifeofAustralia.Itwasafinething toseesomanyoftheoldmemberspre- sent,becausetheywereshowingagoodexampletotheyoungmen.

Fromstarttofinishtherewasnotone dullmoment,theattentionofthe housebeingfullyoccupied.Thehigh standardofefficiencydisplayedinthe singingitems,bothchorusesandsolos, reflectedthegreatestcreditonthe musicaldirector.Thevariousdrill anddancingitemswerealsoofahigh order.Thestagesettings,thefrockingofthechildren,andthelightingeffectsaddedfurthertotheeffectiveness ofthedifferentturns.Anorchestra composedofMissesJ.BarkerandD. WhilsttravellinginVictoriaand SouthAustraliarecently,thewriter hadtheopportunityofhearingdiscussionsofthethenanxiouslyawaitedresultsoftheexaminations,whichhad beenconductedinthevariousschools ofthoseStates.Thesurprising,and, toaHighgateresident,highlygratifyingfeatureofsuchdeliberations,was thefrequencywithwhichthepossibilityofthecontinuanceoftheeducationalprowessoftheHighgateConventinW.A.wascanvassed.
Aprimaryschool,thescholasticsuccessesofwhicharesufficienttoarouse andmaintaintheenthusiasticinterest ofteachersandscholarssituatedthousandsofmilesaway,hasindeedfracturedtheoldideathatallwisemenandwomen-comefromtheEast.
OnThursdaylast,11th.inst.,Iwas privilegedtobepresentattheSacred HeartConvent,Highgate,whilstthe prizeswonduringthepreviousterm werebeingdistributed.Inaddition totheprizeswonasaresultoffriendly andbeneficialrivalrybetweenthe olderscholars,therewasampleevidencethatFatherChristmashadbeen interviewedbysomeoneonbehalfof thepricelesshumanpearlswhoallregardSisterLuciusasmother,andeach littlefaceundoubtedlyproclaimedthe successoftheinterview.Thejoy evidencedbythemirthfulprattle musthavefullycompensatedthegood Nunsforanydifficultytheymayhave experiencedininducingthevenerable chimneydisturbertoprovidesometwo hundredpresentsforthelittlemites.

ThenewBishopofTavium-the nameofhistitularsee-is58yearsof age,havingbeenborninDurhamin 1866.Aftercompletinghisstudies atFribourg,hewasordainedpriestin 1896,andattachedtothedioceseof Salford.Hereheworkedassiduously untiltheoutbreakofthewar.Hewas rectorofseveralparishes,andbuilta church,twoschools,andpresbyteries inthediocese.

DuringthewarhewasChaplainto theForces,andsawserviceinFrance, Belgium,andEgypt,andwasinPalestineafterthewar.
InhiscapacityasArmyChaplainin Palestine,hebecameknowntothe PatriarchofJerusalem,whoquickly recognisedtheexcellentqualitiesof FatherKean.LateronFatherKean returnedtoPalestine,whereHisBeatitudeinvitedhimtobehisSecretary. Earlythisyear,thePatriarchproposed thenameofKatherKeantothePope ashisAuxiliary,andthepetitionwas granted. GovernmentRepresentedatCeremony.
ThePalestinianGovernmentwasrepresentedattheconsecrationbyHis ExcellencySirGilbertClayton,Chief Secretary,ActingHighCommissioner ofPalestine.CaptainCustrepresentedtheGovernorofJerusalem,whowas unabletoattend.
TherewerealsopresentMissClayton, sisterofSirGilbertClayton,theConsulsofItaly,Belgium,Polandand Mexico,andmanyprominentofficials andnotablesofJerusalem.
TheSuperiorsofthereligiousorders assistedinthesanctuary,andthe clergyassistingnumberedover100.

Thirteencenturieslater,hesaid,anotherPope,nowhappilyreigning, wrotetoaPatriarchintheEast,approvingofhisselectionofoneofthe EnglishnationashisAssistantBishop, thusbeautifullyshowingforththecontinuity,theapostolicityandtheinde structibilityoftheCatholicChurch.He concludedintermsofthewarmest praiseofthePatriarch.

OfthegiganticnationalItalianpilgrimagetoLourdes,heldatthebeginningofSeptember,thehospitaltrain returnedonSeptember6. Eachand everyoneofthesickwasexultantand fullofcommotionfortheholyjoysexperiencedduringthisOurLady'spjlgrimage.Manyhavefeltmarkedimprovement,whilstthemedicalbodyof the"UnioneNazionale"reportsthree prodigiouscures.InthesegreatpilgrimagesgreatcrowdsofsufferinghumanityprostratethemselvesatOur Lady'sgrotto,imploringthegraceof goodhealth.Butwhatdoesitmatter ifalldonotobtainamiraculous,physicalcure?Thatwhichcountsisthat inallisoperatedaspiritualmiracleby whichthehumansoulisimmersedinto apurifyingbathfromwhichitemerges restoredandstrengthenedtocontinue thebattleoflife.Hereinpreciselylies thepermanentmiracleofLourdes,a miraclesensiblyfeltandappreciated bythesefourthousandItalianpilgrims. OnthemorningofSeptember19, theCathedralofNapleswaslitterally filledtoovercrowdingwiththousands ofenthusiasticsoulswhoassembledto witnesstheannualrepetitionofthe liquefactionofthebloodoftheSaint. Besidesnumberousbishopsandprelatesmanypatriciansofthearistocracy assistedatthesacredfunction.Among theseprelatesandcanonsaprominent figurewasthatofMonsignorCieplak, thewarriorArchbishopofMoscow. Therecitalofprayersbeganat9a.m., andlastedmorethananhour,whenat twominutespasttenthebloodbegan toliquefy,thewholeoperationtaking, threeminutes.Themiraclewasanflouncedbytheringingofthecathedralbells,bythefiringof12cannons, andbythesirensoftheshipsandof theindustrialestablishments.Todescribethepeople'sjoywouldbeimpossible.Manyfaithfulsoulscried astheyimploredtheSaint'sprotection, tothegreatwonderandstupefaction
